Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida says the shooter in the attack on a high school in his state wore a gas mask and had smoke grenades.
The Florida Democrat said in an interview with CNN that he was briefed on the attack by the FBI.
Nelson says the attacker "set off the fire alarm so the kids would come pouring out of the classrooms into the hall. And there the carnage began."
Nelson says he did not know if the gunman had used the smoke grenades but he assumed that's why he had a gas mask on.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School will be closed Thursday, February 15 and Friday, February 16, 2018, (for the rest of this week). All school activities are also cancelled.

Have any of you ever read that book, "The Neon Bible?" Written at age 16 but published posthumously by John Kennedy Toole? Quick read, highly recommend.
(There is also a great album of the same name by Arcade Fire)
The media has covered suicides in the last 40 years. Perhaps not intentionally. But about a couple decades ago they began a policy of zooming out so they wouldn't broadcast anything gruesome.
I am not talking about government censorship. LE should have the name available for any who want it. (Although I think they should refuse to publicize it in announcements).
And I think the media should print everything about the coward, - age, job, history, accounts from people who knew the creep, etc. But just voluntarily veer away from screaming out their names and blasting their faces all over the place. That's what fuels the next psycho.
If we all refuse to name them, change could occur.
and yet no one did anything to prevent this.

The parents, as far as we know *right now*, are victims of this atrocity, too.

The mother of one of the Columbine shooters, Sue Klebold, wrote a book called A Mother's Reckoning about how she's tried to come to terms with the horrendous act of her son. This was just published in the last couple of years and was on the NY Times bestseller list at some point. It's her attempt to understand what went wrong, what she missed, how it all happened.
I've not read it yet, but I just bought a copy of the ebook because your post reminded me that it did sound interesting.
According to ABC news, Nikolas Cruz was adopted, and both adoptive parents are dead (prior to, and not in conjunction with, this tragedy). http://abcnews.go.com/amp/US/florida-school-shooting-suspect/story?id=53092753
"A family member of the suspect told ABC News that Nikolas was adopted by Roger and Lynda Cruz, both of whom are now deceased. His adopted mother died just last year."

Believe it or not, but mass school shootings really aren’t on the rise. (they are however more deadly) They are just a disgusting part of american culture, and its been that way since the country was founded. SNIP.
