Carli's family didn't initially know something had happened to her until Spanevelo sent a text to her father explaining that she had asked him to drop her off in the middle of nowhere in Florida to see a friend named Stacey. The problem? Her dad knew Stacey no longer lived in the state.

Her father replied, "Stacey moved to Alabama a while ago. Cassie would never have you drop her off anywhere. Is her car at your house?"
Carli's family reported her as missing on March 28, 2022.

The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences informed the Carli family the autopsy is expected to be completed in another 30 to 60 days, which means Florida investigators should have the results between late September and the end of October.

Florida investigators say they are awaiting the autopsy results and clarity on Carli’s cause of death before proceeding with additional charges.

Wow. That’s unbelievable.

The man suspected in the disappearance and death of Navarre woman Cassie Carli is set for trial the second week of October.

Marcus Spanevelo's defense attorney announced they are ready for trial in the Panama City man's evidence tampering case, with a judge setting jury selection for Oct. 10.

Carli was reported missing after she failed to return from a March 27 custody exchange with Spanevelo, an ex-boyfriend with whom she shared a 4-year-old daughter. Carli's vehicle was found abandoned at the meeting point with her purse still inside.

After a nearly week-long search effort spanning multiple states and involving numerous agencies, Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson announced April 3 that Carli's body had been discovered buried in a barn in Alabama.

Locally, Spanevelo is charged with tampering with evidence and providing false information to law enforcement after he allegedly disposed of Carli's cellphone and misled investigators about where he was and what he did on the night of Carli's disappearance.

Why in the world are they not waiting for the autopsy results, unless they just got them???

I’m not sure I completely understand this move either.
This article explains it better.

A warrant affidavit reveals why investigators say Navarre woman Cassie Carli's ex-boyfriend, Marcus Spanevelo, lied to them and tampered with Carli's phone.
The affidavit claims Spanevelo threw Carli's phone out the window of his truck when driving on March 28 -- the day after she disappeared.

The documents say when detectives asked him why he did that, Spanevelo told them he had to get rid of it.

Texts messages Channel 3 obtained claimed Spanevelo told Carli's family she wanted to be dropped off in the "middle of nowhere in Destin." Prosecutors say his information about her being dropped off was not corroborated.

Could it have anything to do with the tampering with evidence charge being filed in Florida and autopsy was done in Alabama? I’m not sure.

ETA - I can’t help but think that his defense attorney is hoping he will be acquitted of these local charges in FL thus influencing the filing of murder charges in AL. JMO

Fingers crossed that Alabama authorities have been working hard on charges relating to Carli's murder. Particularly since FL is in such a rush to get him tried on the lesser charges of evidence tampering. Alabama has been notably quiet.

The case has been continued until next week, with jury selection beginning on Monday and the trial beginning on Tuesday. WKRG News 5 is currently waiting on more details from the Santa Rosa County Clerk of Court. We will update this story when more information is available.

Medical examiners in Alabama have completed the autopsy of Cassie Carli, however rather than provide answers, the final autopsy report leads to even bigger questions as to how the Florida mother died.

The final autopsy report lists both Carli’s cause of death and manner of death as “undetermined,” the St. Clair County Coroner’s Office told WFLA.com on Monday.

The cause of death was believed to be the only obstacle preventing Santa Rosa prosecutors in Florida from charging Marcus Spanevelo, Carli’s ex-boyfriend and father to their young daughter, with murder. Between the coroner and the ADFS laboratory work conducted over a six-month period in Huntsville, forensic teams in Alabama could not determine how Carli died.

However, the surprising ruling on Carli’s manner of death as “undetermined” rather than definitively establishing it as a homicide now yields massive questions on the case and whether investigators can prove Spanevelo is connected to Carli’s death.
