Markel murder trial day 6: Retired, undercover FBI agent takes stand

Oct 04, 2019

"Day 6 Wrap

An under cover FBI agent took the stand Friday afternoon in the trial of two people accused of murdering an FSU law professor.
The agent was used to create concern among conspirators.

In an effort to find a smoking gun in this case and undercover FBI agent approached Donna Adelson...."

Markel murder trial day 6: Retired, undercover FBI agent takes stand

During this trial, I just have to keep in mind that the prosecution has learned what does and does not work, and what the jury is thinking and is acceptable throughout this trial.

It is a trial run for the next set of defendants to ensure the next prosecutions ends in convictions?

That neighbor should be given a medal! And he even knew it was a Prius and recognized such. That was so key! SLAM

I hope the jury didn't miss that connection of the reference to the TV twice. Once with Wendy, and once when the undercover agent prompted them to talk about it.

The only time I have seen such hatred and the vitriol towards a spouse publically shouting to the world was when someone had an affair. But he did not as far as We Know. Moo.

Travis wasn't a saint ( Jodi Arias case), Shannan Watts had quirks that some did not like ( Christopher Watts case)... but none justify murder! Many folks go through the same things that they did oh, and it just takes the wrong person to be in the mix. Moo

Yes, for her to publish that book publicly for all of her family and friends and his family and friends to see, that was control for sure. He had to keep his mouth shut or else he would get entangled into what buttons she was pushing in my opinion. So therefore, he said that he had not read the book. But I'm sure he knew what was in it.

Oh my gosh, if we were on another website we could go on and on about this! But I will just move on.

I did not follow much of this afternoon, so thanks for noting this.

This is such a complex case again with all the times and dates and cell towers and financial information to try to put together. I would think it's going to take the jury a long time but you never know.

So so sad. I hope his friends are following this case and they are like Jeff, they are discussing what they are seeing as the truth. It took some of their friends to realize this sooner, but I would expect that this trial is very eye-opening too many of them.

No words..agree

I have listened to that podcast, and other items that she posted, in the last week. Just to reinforce what her level of underlying passive aggressive and murderous intent was. M o o.

She oozes it out of her pores.

I don't mean this to be a religious comment, but I hope she, and others responsible are shunned.

Moo
This has been a somewhat complex case as we at WS tend to read everything, and read it again. I'm stepping out on a limb here but I'm thinking this murder and why it happened will be crystal clear to the jury. And when WA is arrested and put on trial, she, her bro, mommy, and maybe even Daddy will be toast. Burnt toast.

I think you're right. One of the witnesses kinda proved that not everyone is so in tune with the details, or even the case as we are. June, CA's ex-girlfriend, testified she had never even heard of the case until detectives showed up to ask her questions, and I think that was in 2016, 2 years after the murder. She obviously isn't someone who keeps up with current events.....not everyone is, including some members of the jury I would imagine.

I'm still really mad about Decoste (defense attorney) insisting the undercover FBI agent go along with his "planting something and making it grow" scenario so that he could give a PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION OF HIM to anyone listening, using his "long beard" as an excuse to give that description. (Towards the end of this video) This is absolutely despicable and I think it was a threat.
Wow. I just watched that after your comment. That is awful!

This case is complicated, but I’m hoping it’s crystal clear to the jurors what has happened here. It’s crystal clear to me and I admit I am A.D.D. at times and not that detail oriented. There are just too many things that aren’t coincidences and so much evidence that links everyone involved including the Adelson family. I think the State is doing a fine job. While at times Cappleman can sound monotone, but in no way is it annoying - nor does she put me off like the male defense attorneys. I do like Kawass, but she doesn’t have much to work with. I like that Cappleman is calm, cool and collected and that nothing ruffles her feathers in the courtroom. She comes off confident and sure, and I don’t feel that she comes off as trying to trick the witnesses or the jury. I think SG and KM’s goose is cooked.

I sure am praying so. They are clearly guilty as sin.

ETA seeing now this is a re post, sorry.
Wondering what KM and SG are each thinking, is SG glaring at her in the photo?
Strangely their clothing choice is almost suggestive of a " jail bars'' tie and a "cage" blouse on KM.jmo, speculation.

LIVE BLOG: Witness testimony resumes on Day 6 of Dan Markel murder trial

"Mary Hull is the state's financial crime analyst. On Friday she broke down Katherine Magbanua, Sigfredo Garcia, Luis Rivera, and the Adelson family's financial records.

Hull showed records of both Garcia and Rivera buying cars and motorcycles right after Markel's murder. Records also showed that despite being out for breast implants, Magbanua's paychecks from the Adelson's never changed."

"We also learned that for about 12 hours during the time of Markel's murder, both Garcia and Rivera had their cell phones turned off.

Records show that an hour after the murder, Garcia turned his phone back on and called Katherine Magbanua."

To me it looks like SG is smirking.

One thing that makes the case complex is that the alleged middleman -- KM -- had romantic relationships with both the alleged hiring party and the alleged killer. So there would be calls, texts and possibly luxury gifts being exchanged even if there was no (alleged) murder conspiracy. So the prosecution has to deal with that and explain the timeline of breakups and money. But at its core it's a straight forward case. I have faith in this jury. JMO.

I’m not so sure Dan was controlling. Sounds like WA just wanted her way. It has been says that he did boast and promote her book on his blog (even though he didn’t take 2 hours of his time to read it). We only have WA’s side of what went on in that marriage - and we already know that she is less than truthful.

When she wrote about it for her class, she said something to the effect of, "I made the mistake of thinking I could cheat the system, and marry someone for whom I did not have passionate love."

Indeed. And LR seemed mostly credible and I think the jury will mostly believe him.

ETA - Court TV is talking about this case today and even the commentary is positive on LR! For what it’s worth - They “like” him, and believe he is being truthful in his testimony. They didn’t have nice things to say about WA!

She did not come across well. And what was with that ridiculousness that she hasn’t really moved out of Tallahassee permanently? What? There were several off moments obviously but I thought that was a weird thing to say. Edited to add - I just saw other answers she gave commented on but not this one so just mentioning it.

Yes, was just thinking that LR really is key. I thought he might fall apart on cross, but he was a very good witness. I agree that a lot of what he said seemed credible (and was corroborated by records). Also, JL was important. His testimony about WA's statement about CA and a hitman and his overall description of WA was very important for the prosecution I think. JMO.

All of those communications back and forth between CA and WA on the day of the murder don't look great for WA -

Dan Markel trial: Timeline of calls between Adelson family, suspects the day Markel died
The call from WA to DM @ 11:42 am on July 18, 2014. That is the strangest phone call of all of them. Looks like she was checking to see if the deed was truly completed and a drive by shortly thereafter to double check. So she could authorize the cash release. IMO She must have been shocked when she saw the crime scene tape all set up. She knew right then and there the deed was done.

I don't get a hostile vibe between the two defendants in court. If anything I get the vibe he is happy to 'spend time' with her even in this setting.
I still cynically wonder if his glasses are for real. He has very piercing eyes and the glasses downplay that and make him look kind of Clark Kent nerdy. I guess it's common for defendants to try to look nerdy and unthreatening in court though!

The 'cheat the system' comment is pretty eerie to me and shows a certain mindset IMO

And why the heck is a dentist office called an "institute"? So grandiose and misleading!!

So true! I'm a dentist, (not in USA, but read a lot of USA based boards, FB etc), and when I started reading about this case, I remember looking up the Institute's website, and being distinctly underwhelmed. It's a smallish practice, which looked quite shabby on the website photos.

The purported earnings, $3-3.5 million over 3 years for CA reported some pages back are not, I believe, accurate. Either that is the fees charged/collected, (overheads in dental practices usually 70% plus), or there is some other source of income as well as that produced from his dental work. I have been a dentist for a very long time, and have never heard of someone making anything like that. (I think the annual average in USA is around 120-150K) Dentistry is lucrative, but not insanely so. Of course, CA is lucky that his parents probably paid his student fees, (dentists now are graduating with such large student debts that it will probably be impossible for these to be paid by most), and that his parents already owned the Institute.

There was testimony from one of KM's friends that KM meet CA at another dental practice that he visited to do specialist work. (And she worked at at that time) Specialists do indeed do this, but not if they have plenty of work at their own practice. I think this probably indicates that things might have been a bit quiet at the Institute.
