I was just reading a story about a couple of teenagers finding a child's skull in a lake in Hollywood, FL.

Hollywood is just down the road from Pompano Beach .. made me think of Deb.

Longshot, I know, but have you heard anything about this skull, SSA?

I guess we wait on age, sex, race determination .. etc.

Four human skulls found in Florida

In two separate incidents over the last several days four human skulls have been found in Florida.

On Saturday January 28th two teenagers found a skull in the lake at Oak Lake Park near North 56th Avenue and Douglas Street in Hollywood, Florida. The two fifteen year olds, NV and MF, wanted to just go swimming in the lake when they tried to pull a shopping cart out of the water. NV said that he found a vase inside the cart and upon dumping it out found the skull. NV also said that judging by the size of the skull he thought it might be that of a child.

They believe the one the teens found belongs to a small child...but as of yet, I can't find anything on the other three, which is odd. The police searched the lake, and found no other bones....

It is terrible that finding related articles to this story is so hard,one would think they'd all pop right up in a search engine, but noooooooo that would make it to easy.........

Could some kind of religious or spiritual ritual be behind the appearance of two skulls unearthed from a sandbar on the edge of an old Winter Garden migrant-worker camp?

That's just one of many scenarios Orange-Osceola Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Jan Garavaglia and forensic anthropologists are entertaining as they piece together the mummified fragments of cranium bone and tissue a plumber found while installing pool piping in a west Orange County subdivision this week.

"We can't rule anything out," said Garavaglia, who is working with UCF forensic-anthropology professor Dr. John Schultz and his graduate students to analyze the remains. "It's going to be slow and tedious."

When I first read about these three skulls, a few days ago, I thought of your sister. But I am certain that I also read that there was a newspaper from 1978 found buried with one of the bodies. So I discounted the connection. I will try and find what I was reading. There is another link here somewhere that I saw.

I initially ruled out Debbie, too, when I read about the 1978 newspaper or magazine clipping. But then I read this in an article yesterday that I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere. I wish we could get clarification on it.

Garavaglia, who is known as Dr. G, said that the skulls are actually not all from the same time period.

A purse found near the skulls contained a part of a newspaper clipping dated from 1978.

The partial skull of a 5- to 7-year-old child was found Saturday near a home at Brook Haven Trailer Park, Opelika, Ala., police said.

When I first read about these three skulls, a few days ago, I thought of your sister. But I am certain that I also read that there was a newspaper from 1978 found buried with one of the bodies. I saw that, I think it is in the link I posted. However, at this point it is hard to say if the articles found belonged to the skulls. They also found....some kind of ticket to an all star game. They are also not sure if the skulls were buried at the same time. Sometimes I think I am horrible, I pray so often for a yes on remains....but after almost 40 years, how do you pray for a no?

Yes that is really about all they are saying right now. I was amazed at how little was actually being said, and I never did find the 4th skull that was ( according to the article I posted a few posts up) found in Florida. Sheesh...it is like skulls being found is not even news there. I would say none of them are her but Schaefer liked to decapitate his victims (or at least some of them) and to the best of my knowledge, they have never found the heads. That even made me ill, the more I learn, the sicker he was. But I still appreciate the heads up....some people think the worst kind of hope is false hope....I disagree....the worst hope is no hope.

Oh if I had the power I would make sure all know her true motives!!! Not a dime from her books go to help the families of the victims...

Another year is slowly approaching us....this time of year is always the hardest. We remember every detail still.....no new leads.....no new details...what empty and hurtful phrases those are. Another year and no changes.....but still we hope.....and still we love and miss her.

Sadly, at the time that Debbie vanished missing children cases were not taken very seriously. While they took a report the day she vanished, they refused to file it or declare her missing for 72 hours. Even then she was not listed as a endangered missing child, she was instead classified as a runaway. To date no evidence has ever been found to support that classification. The police became so tired of my parents coming in and pressing for answers, that at one point they were escorted out of the police station, and threatened with arrest if they returned. My sisters file at the Pompano Beach police department contains 4 pages. One of the detectives who now have her case, apologized to us for how terribly her case had been mishandled. After a few years of research, and a lot of insistence my brother managed to get her case reclassified as endangered missing, he also got her listed on all of the missing child sites he could find, and the police acknowledged that she was a possible victim of John Gerard Schaefer. However, to date, despite our repeated requests and pleading, they still refuse to allow us to see the evidence they found at Schaefers residence. All we have ever been permitted to see are the few black and white photos that have been published. We feel that MAYBE we could identify something of hers.

The families of all of the victims of this animal deserve answers. The families of all of the victims deserve answers.....but as each year goes by.....those answers often slip further and further away. I read things from the families of his victims that happened years before my sister.....and they still have no answers either.....I feel so very sad for them. Hope is what keeps us going.....maybe someday the missing piece that gets the answers for us all will suddenly fall into place.......that is the hope we hang tightly too......
Our thoughts and prayers go with all of you.....daily.....we know your pain is as deep as ours.....and we hope and pray you get the answers you seek also.
Today...we did get a little good news. We have searched and searched for several years for a copy of the last school photo ever taken of Debbie. Today I was contacted by somebody to tell me he has the year book for the 1971-1972 school year.....and her photo is in it......odd that it comes so close to another anniversary.....and it may seem small to some.....but it is something.....and we will take it!!!!!

Not only my family, but the police also knew of him. At the time of his arrest he was a deputy who used his patrol car to help obtain victims. John Gerard Schaefer is one of Florida's most notorious serial killers......and sadly one of the most horrific in his methods......BUT....to give credit where credit is due, Law enforcement has come a long way in how they investigate Missing Children......sadly progress takes time, and often comes at a price way to high.

Bessie Thank You so very much for bring those links so that they could more easily be viewed. The timeline you created is the most accurate I have seen anywhere, and I know it took you awhile last year where you created it.

I have a general question for anybody who may know:
Other than my sister, were any of the suspected Schaefer victims picked up while going to or coming from school? I know some he picked up as dates, others he detained as run away's, and the two youngest victims he abducted from the beach by taking them for ice cream.
Also, other than Deb did any of his abductions record him leaving the persons items at the abduction site? (Debs school books were found in the trash can one block from our home)
I know the circumstances of most of his suspected victims pretty well, but perhaps I missed something somewhere that one of you may have noticed.

McIlwain is now an investigator for the Martin County State Attorney's Office, where he keeps a file on the Schaefer case in a closet. In the file are many of the writings that police seized from Schaefer's mother's Fort Lauderdale home on Southwest 34th Avenue during the 1973 search.

Somehow I either overlooked this, or I did not give it the attention I feel it deserves. We do have a copy of KF by SL, which was purchased used from Amazon to prevent her from profiting.

I wonder if I contacted him if he would provide me a copy of the handwritten stories. While reading his book none of us found any stories we felt pointed to my sisters murder. Now I am wondering which copy we have. It is believed by many, myself included, that each of his stories details the more than savage torture, and murder of each of his victims.
My little sister ( who could be Debs carbon copy, except for the hair) said to me that Deb looks so tired in the photo we recently located. (I agree) Her eyes have a look to them almost as if she knows her future. She said when I think of her tied to a tree somewhere.....naked and cold.....scared and alone....screaming, begging, as she endured his savagery, I know what hate feels like. It is sad when remembering they called him the "Hangman"( because he tired a noose around the girls necks also while he was away) makes us pray they she hung herself before he had a chance to torment her. Isn't that horrible?

Thank you for taking time to search. That particular ring belongs to a girl they found in Davie Florida around 1973. They found her underwater.....can't remember if it was a lake....

We were contacted about her in the early 2000's and my sister and I submitted DNA, she has been ruled out. This was actually one of the DNA sample results that was "lost" after she was ruled out, instead of being entered.

That ring oddly enough was similar enough that it gave me that funny feeling up my spine first time I saw it.......

It amazes me that as distinct as it is, they still have not been able to identify her. The fact that they did contact us out of the blue on this one....tells me that are at least trying to get her home.

I am also going to contact the places you suggested. First off I'd love to see my sisters story told completely.....and honestly.....there is no excuse for how things have been handled.....and honestly it makes me so angry I could punch someone and cuss.....So I appreciate you sending me the suggestions.
