So the application for asylum by I.Todashev was bogus?

So the application for asylum by I.Todashev was bogus?

Not sure about that but on the police report from the parking lot rage he claimed to be a United States citizen. :shakehead:

So his father said at one point Ibrahim was an exchange student in the US(2008?). True "exchange students" usually have host families that they live with. I know it was a few years ago, but I am wondering if we have heard from Todashev's host family? (Or possibly the father was using the term incorrectly) Certainly, after living with him for a school year (the usual) they would know something of his character.

One more question for those of you who have been watching the details from the beginning. Is the father a government official? If so, how could Todashev claim asylum in the US?

ETA: If this is a rehash of an already answered question, feel free to tell me. There are enough of those already on this thread :)

Exactly !!! How did he get a green card? How did Musa Khadjimuradov ,a known Chechen rebel get exile? How come we were warned about TT by both Russia and Saudi yet it seemed to be mostly ignored?

Study exchange programs at college level are with other colleges/universities in another country. Amanda Knox was an exchange student in Italy.

The US government has granted asylum to Chechens who fought in two civil wars that began when Russian forces entered Chechnya, a semiautonomous region in southern Russia, in 1994 to put down a rebellion by Islamic separatists. One former Chechen rebel living in New Hampshire who knew Tsarnaev was questioned by the FBI in the Marathon bombing investigation.

The current Moscow-backed leadership of Chechnya has been ruthless in prosecuting suspected separatists. But Abdulbaki Todashev, who is a department head in the mayor’s office in Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, said his son had no reason to fear repression or persecution in Chechnya.

“He was too young to fight in the war, and he has nothing to fear here now,” Abdulbaki Todashev said. “He would have faced no oppression here.”

Not sure about that but on the police report from the parking lot rage he claimed to be a United States citizen. :shakehead:

He is legally a permanent resident, not a citizen.

There are some who are claiming he committed Visa fraud. It goes something like this. He came into the country on a J-1 visa exchange program - evidently a J-1 Visa means you have no intention of giving up citizenship in your own country. However, he applied for asylum and you must do that within a year of entering the US so the claim is that he had that intention when coming here. IDK
Todashev came to America from Russia several years ago to study under a J-1 visa, which is designed to promote cultural exchange by granting foreigners temporary permission to study or work in the United States, according to several law enforcement officials with knowledge of his background.

...However, in 2008, the US government granted Todashev asylum, a protection granted to foreigners with a credible fear for their safety in their homelands because of religious, political, or other forms of persecution.
Todashev obtained a green card in February, making him a legal permanent resident and clearing the way for him to apply for US citizenship in a few years if he remained in good standing, according to the officials.

In March, Todashev was issued a Florida driver’s license.
I don't know about the timeline...

2007? - came to several years ago on a J-1 non-immigrant visa to study
2008 - he applied for and was granted asylum, his father Abdulbaki (or Abdul-Baki) Todashev became a high-ranking pro-Moscow official in the city administration in 2008 (wiki)
2010 - violent road rage
2010/11 - gets married
2011 - (September 11) Waltham murders
2012 - (August) mixed martial arts license with the Florida State Boxing Commision (November) gets separated from wife
2013 - (March) knee surgery, obtained a green card/became a permanent resident/FL DL (May 4) parking space fight aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, a second-degree felony (May 16) girlfriend Tatiana Gruzdeva arrested for immigration violation

...but his dad keeps claiming stuff and it looks he didn't need asylum. I guess we are all trying to figure out what he claimed to get it and if those claims were bogus.

According to the Center for Immigration Studies, Todashev was granted asylum for no valid reason as he was in no danger of repression or ethnic or religious persecution in Chechnya and might have "lied throughout his entire interaction with State Department and Homeland Security authorities;"[4] his own father said his son had no reason to fear "oppression" back home as "he was too young to fight in the war, and he has nothing to fear here now" from the authorities.[5] He said: "Out of fear of the lawlessness in Chechnya, I sent him to the U.S., because it seemed like the safest country at the time."[6] The father said that after abandoning the MMA career due to injury, his son has held various jobs in Boston area before moving to Florida.[6] However, Ibragim Todashev's death certficate lists his occupation as "never worked".[7] In the United States, Todashev married an Armenian American Reni Manukyan, who said she met her late husband in 2010 through a mutual friend in Boston and then converted to Islam; Manukyan said she separated from Todashev in November 2012 (wiki)

One article said that the estranged wife converted to Islam prior to their marriage and that they knew each other about two months before wedding.

Aren't asylum applicants thoroughly checked and interviewed to make sure the threat is real?

Assumng he had a previous driver's license, was it issued in MA? Car was registered in GA, where estranged wife lived.

Interesting on MMA:

While pro MMA matches are regulated, amateur competition often goes on with little oversight, according to Gregory Sirb, executive director of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission and former president of the Association of Boxing Commissions. Amateur mixed martial arts competitions are banned in West Virginia, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Colorado, and North Dakota, according to the ABC. Bouts at the amateur level go on completely unregulated in 11 states, the organization says.

“It’s horrible,” Sirb said. “For a sport that’s so violent – this sport screams for oversight.”

While amateur match-ups may not be heavily regulated by the states, experienced fighters tend to have their own code of conduct, Tullius said, an ethic Todashev violated in at least two incidents when he appears to have used his fighting abilities well outside the ring.

"Some places will say if you get into a fight you're not training here," Tullius said. "And a professional would not want to do that."

sort of OT and probably the most prejudicial thing I ever said but for some reason I doubt this girl would be with a guy that lives off his ex wife's allowance.IMO he was getting income from somewhere......

Yeah, something doesn't seem right about it, huh. Russian agent or escort? Maybe, but sincere girlfriend? IDK... my impressions could be wrong. She was in another state before coming to Florida... seems she traveled around a lot in Russia also. 19 years old, where does the money come from?

DOJ: We will decide if probe is needed in FBI shooting case
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news...hev-doj-civil-rights-20130609,0,6770665.story

A DOJ spokesperson said the civil-rights division is "monitoring the FBI Inspection Division's inquiry into this matter while it progresses, coordinating with the FBI and reviewing evidence as it is obtained."

If an additional "investigation is warranted, the Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida will direct that investigation and make an independent decision," the DOJ spokesperson said.

College/university he attended must have been in MA. Is there proof he had a J-1 visa or was that a story he told his dad? Also father didn't think IT met TT until 2011 when the two were training at the same gym. Seems like they would have met much sooner. IT had a Watertown address at one time.

So the application for asylum by I.Todashev was bogus?

Why go the asylum route if he was a foreign student? Plus, I remember reading that he gained permanent residence. Does anyone remember when that was granted?

Exactly !!! How did he get a green card? How did Musa Khadjimuradov ,a known Chechen rebel get exile? How come we were warned about TT by both Russia and Saudi yet it seemed to be mostly ignored?

Maybe they or their older family members were used as double agents?

The media has reported that IT was being followed since just after the bombings and the triple murders didn't come up until the day of the shooting. There was no one there to represent Waltham police so did the FBI take over that case? It was reported that the MA troopers were there for inqueries related to the bombings.

triple murders didn't come up until the day of the shooting. That is my sense too. The exwife stated as such before they killed him.

As posted earlier they had been following them around for weeks. They were talking to his friends etc. According to the friend, video last page, they never asked anything about triple the entire time. This is congruent with the friend and the ex wife.

Obviously if we are into our 8th hour , after weeks , we must be having a hard time coming up with anything arrestable.

He was cooperative. Now that all the outside folks ACLU etc are asking for indep reviews and the high profile nature of how it was all confused (still is ) odds are IMO, one agency ought to be able to look into this.

But by then it (cept for ANderson !) it will go away and we will know nothing...
