WATCH LIVE: Pregnant Niece Murder Trial — FL v. Johnathan Quiles — Day Five

Johnathan Quiles is accused of killing his pregnant niece, Iyana Sawyer, in north Florida back in 2018. Police believe the high school sophomore was shot, killed, and thrown into a dumpster, however her body had never been found. Investigators believe Quiles murdered Sawyer because she was pregnant with his child. He was arrested for first-degree murder and sexual battery.

We are back in court this morning. Detective Abbott will return to the bench. Jury hasn't been brought out yet. Catch up here:

Updated: September 20, 2023 at 2:47 PM

Abbott is reading more messages. One message says "Just making it so easy for me to leave you alone, good bye Yana". (Yana is a nickname for Sawyer). They are showing a pic of I.S. in Quiles phone with the caption 'the face of a cheater’.

Another message says 'I don't like nobody hurting you but me...I'm sorry I forgot you are carrying our child and are oversensitive....but we have plans’.

Here's what detective Abbott is reading out loud in court. Read the message below.

Another message says "I'm just so in love with you. I'll kill you and cry".

Another message says "you're stuck with me until you die. I love you way to much to let you go.”

Now we are looking at a Google map of where police placed Quiles's location on 12-19-18 around 11:43, he was at a parts place on Duval Place Dr. North of Ace Pick-a-Park. From here to Terry Parker High School, Abbott says it’s about 18min one way. Roundtrip: 35min

The defense is starting cross examination for Detective Abbott.

Abbott tells the defense through his investigation he found Quiles and Sawyer were having a relationship. Within the first 9 days of the investigation he knew from Quiles's brother and the wire.

Abbott says S.S. lied to him, led them on a chase for about 10 days. When she finally told the truth, she says IS told her she was going to her grandmother in GA for 2 weeks then she would tell her mother that Quiles was the father of her child.

Abbott says he believes Sawyer is dead based on Quiles implicating himself twice. Abbott agrees there is no body and no blood because he says Quiles manipulated the scene where we claims he shot her, and that he scooped up the blood on the ground, tampering with the scene.

Defense clarifies with Abbott that it was Quiles wife who said Sawyer took her 'most prized possessions', meaning her Victoria Secret bra's and panties. Then Quiles gave an amount (38 pieces). Defense reminds Abbott both I.S. and S.S. spent a lot of time at Quiles house.

Abbott tells the defense they brought the police K9 to Ace Pick-a-Part on Jan 8th and 10th, 2019. He says the wire came in on the 9th.

Abbott tells defense they found Quiles's DNA in the crotch of Sawyers underware. Abbott says they don't know if it was skin cell or serology because the information from FDLE was inconclusive. He also says he can't be sure how the DNA got there.

Abbott says he can't say definitively if the underware recovered from landfill belonged to Sawyer. He says the same about the book from Terry Parker High, even after calling the school to check.

The state calls Naomi Mobley, Quiles's ex-wife.

Naomi says her nieces I.S. and S.S. would come to her house to help with her 3yr old daughter or spend time with her. She learned she was pregnant in June 2018.

Naomi says she found out about I.S. being pregnant on Dec 3. On a group text with sisters and Quiles, an older sister said 'Jose' was Quiles, and he was I.S. unborn baby's father. Naomi told her sisters they don't have to wait for the baby to be born, and he could be tested now.

Naomi says after her sister alleged Quiles was the father, she told Quiles to stop speaking to her nieces and distance himself from their family. She said he told her he would stop, but later learned he kept talking to them.

after I.S. was reported missing she says Quiles slept like a baby.

Naomi says Quiles was very upset about the fact her family was happy I.S. was having baby. She says his words were 'this is just going to ruin her future'. She said right before I.S. went missing, Quiles was nervous about not being able to hear from his brother…

Naomi tells the court after Quiles was arrested he called her and she asked him to tell her the truth. His response was 'I want to tell you the truth but the people listening will take it the wrong way'. She says from this point she no longer believed him.

Naomi says in 2019 she realized the Google location had been erased all the way up until Dec 20th. This is when she was trying to figure out how I.S. could've got from Terry Parker HS to Ace Pick-a-Part. The defense is starting cross examination.

Naomi says when I.S. was reported missing she was estranged from the family. She says she would get updates from one of her sisters but could not assist in the search. But she says she, Quiles, and their daughter did drive around Arlington looking for I.S.

Naomi says she asked her nieces if anything inappropriate happened between them and Quiles. They told her no. This was early 2018. She also says she never suspected anything was going on.

Judge is talking about options for jurors of either starting closing arguments this week or next week. He wants the information to be fresh in their minds. He also asked if they can stay later today. Judge believes they can get closing arguments by tomorrow afternoon.

State says it’s possible they will rest this afternoon. They plan to play the 2-hour long wire and call a few more witnesses. On break until 1:45.

The state calls Damian Hatch. A Bay County Inmate. He was previously at Duval County Jail where he met Quiles.

and he said she went down and he pulled his gun out and shot her." Hatch says Quiles told him he called his brother right after he did it. He says Quiles also told him he had sex with I.S. sister.

Hatch says Quiles told him he had sex with his niece and became pregnant. Hatch says Quiles wanted her to get rid of baby. "He was like she was going to run away and she call him that morning and he told her were to meet him at. When they met up he started chocking her…

Hatch says about a month later he was moved out of the dorm where Quiles was. He came forward because he said 'I just felt like it was wrong, and it was the right thing to do'. He told the court he was not promised anything in return for his testimony. Cross starting.

The defense is questioning Hatch about the timing of their conversation. Hatch says he's confident the conversation happened after a group bible study in Feb 2022.

Hatch tells the defense he got information about cooperating with the SAO from someone who had cooperated with them before. But Hatch says he never told him if he would get something off of doing it but instead what the other inmate got from it.

State calls JSO detective Robert Buidlik.

Buidlik says there was a decision to introduce a wire into jail before Quiles arrived at jail. He put a wire on Morris McClendon who has since passed away.

The state calls George Jackson. He is cousins with M. McClendon who wore a wire in this case. Jackson did not wear the wire.

On the recording, Jackson says you can hear himself, McClendon, and Quiles. It was a conversation about Quiles's niece.

Jackson says he is seeking assistance with his probation. We are about to hear the wire recording.

I made the mistake of listening to S.S.'s testimony. I want to puke and curl up in a ball and die.
Being raised by a single parent... is hard. A lot of us know this struggle. I was a kid who craved love & attention like many, and my mom nor my dad hardly ever kept an eye on me. I raised myself. I am extremely lucky I didn't end up in some absolutely horrifying situation. my empathy is at a 100/10 for this situation and i feel so disgusted. I feel so so so much sorrow for Iyana & her sister, not to mention this disgusting garbage pile's innocent children as well.

his ex-wife... if looks could kill.

i cant believe this man's brother still talks to him.

also, i wish everyone in court would call "the sex/the intercourse" with either of these poor young girls what it was: RAPE.
this was their uncle they loved, knew, and trusted, the father of their cousins, their auntie's man. predators like this should have an expedited death penalty but a slow & painful death IMO

I’m watching the trial on CourtTV right now. His ex-wife is testifying and doing a fantastic job. I don’t know how she can keep such composure, talking about this horror. She’s painting such clear pictures.
the part that bugged me was that she referred to what he did as "cheating". i hope her anger is about much more than that. i'm sure it is, but we have seen SOs be awful/jealous to victims so i worry. lord have mercy on this family.

We're back in court - the state rested last night after gripping testimony from Quiles brother Joseph. The jury hasn't been brought in yet. The defense will start calling their witnesses shortly.

Defense is moving for acquittal based on the state not being able to prove a crime was committed without the statements from Quiles on the wire and statements from his brother. Attorney Davis says they couldn't prove premeditation of Sawyer and the unborn child until..

they had the confession. They say without Quiles's statements the state can't show a murder occurred, a crime scene at Ace Pick-a-Part, or that he lured Sawyer there to murder her. He says the states case is hinged on the lead detective Abbott saying it went from missing person..

to a homicide case only after hearing the wire and statements from Quiles brother. Abbott admitted there was no blood, no body, no weapon, and no DNA. The state says they proved murder before the confession on the wire through the snapchat messages, evidence shows they met up...

Quiles turned off his Google data, and the state established how she disappeared before they played the wire. The state says all those things show she is dead and never to be seen 4+ years later. The judge denied the defense request for acquittal. Quiles decided not to testify.

The defense calls Carol Clip (?). She says she believes she saw a girl walking down Phillips Highway on Dec 26th 2018. A few days later she saw Sawyer on the news, and strongly believes it was who she saw walking. She called police. The state is cross examining her now.

The state had this witness clairfy the dates and description of the girl she saw. Clip says it was about 5 days later that she called police - same day she saw the picture of Sawyer on the news. The defense is calling their next witness.

study attendee's but the number of his felony convictions. The state is now asking him about if he is able to watch and hear which each person is saying when they leave the bible study.

confessed his crime to someone else who attended the bible study with him back in 2019. Dixion says he kept record of who attended the bible study. During cross examination the state had Dixion talk about his charges and asked him how he could keep record of his bible…

On redirect, Dixion tells the court that Damian Hatch and Quiles were never together at bible study. He says 'they trying to kill this guy and the dude is lying on him', which is why he wanted to testify today.

The defense calls Kamar Humphry. He testifies he was in a sexual relationship with Sawyer. In March 2018 police did a mouth swab on him for a rape kit. He says he only slept with her one time, and after police came to his home he stopped seeing Sawyer.

Humphry says the defense attorney Michel tried to incriminate him and attacked him during their deposition. It caused him to lie about his whereabouts. The state on cross had him verify that he was out of town when Sawyer was reported missing. Defense rests.

We're back. Jury entering courtroom.

State Attorney French quotes Quiles to start closing arguments: "She just went into a bag several bags? No 2, just folded her....Her body went into a dumpster, I’m hoping the holiday and the rain will help at landfill. That houses will be built over her by time anyone realizes..”

State is reviewing the witnesses they've called.

Attorney French talks about Sawyers rape kit from 2018 involved her neighbor, and when the DNA came back, Quiles's DNA was found in her underwear.

State attorney shows photo of Sawyer when she is last seen alive. French says she's on the phone in the picture but the call is not on her records. She says they used a 3rd party app so it wouldn't be tracked. French says this speaks to the planning.

State is recapping the snapchat messages. She says he lied on the wire about having sex with Sawyers sister S.S., because she's still alive. But he admits to having sex with her in the snapchat message.

Appreciate your post @NeverPersonal. I've not watched much of the trial; however, 100% with you on calling it what it is, rape! Rape of innocent victims - who were taken advantage of like every single person under the age of 18, imo.

I am no expert ... though my thoughts are that these monsters prey on children who are not supervised well or are on their own often. Not sure if you're familiar with Sandra Cantu (Tracy, CA) case which happened years ago... a case which has stayed with me - so senseless (they all are). I try to stay away from children cases, but anymore, there needs to be justice, and remaining silent about them, is not the answer. Tired of the sweeping something under the rug - call it what it is. MOO. Speculation.

In closing arguments, prosecutor Cameron French broke down to the jury all the evidence that proves #JohnathanQuiles murdered his pregnant niece #IyanaSawyer. French claimed that Quiles lied about having sex with her sister on the wire because she was still alive. He allegedly admitted to having sex with Sawyer's sister in a Snapchat message.

A defense witness admitted to being in a sexual relationship with accused killer #JohnathanQuiles' pregnant niece #IyanaSawyer, despite denying he slept with her during a deposition. The witness claimed he only slept with her once. "I felt like you were attacking me," the witness said. Quiles is on trial for allegedly murdering his niece and being the possible father of her child

The defense is starting their closing argument with attorney Christine Michel. She tells the jury to question everything.

Defense attorney Michel says there are conflicts left and right and things that don't make sense in what was presented by the state.

Defense says we don't know who wrote the messages on Snapchat. She says some of the messages were about Quiles and not from him, calling it a one sided conversation that could've been about anyone.

Defense attorneys say if you listen closely to the wire, every answer is prompted, is lead, as they are feeding him information and signaling what needs to be said. She says at start of wire there are razors on the floor and it wouldn't take much to threaten someone.

Michel says on the wire Sawyer was said to be put in a bag, but Quiles's brother testified Sawyer was put in a carpet. Michel says the yard was full of people working but somehow no one saw anything.

The defense says the camera's don't prove anything and Quiles had a legit reason to leave work as he was going to buy parts at Fastenall. He wouldn't clock out to buy parts, because he'd still be on the clock.

The defense finished their closing. The state is starting their rebuttal.

Daniel Skinner, prosecutor, says Quiles knows how to delete evidence but made a grave mistake when he ran his mouth and told his brother what he did. Skinner says Quiles confessed three times to killing Sawyer.

Prosecutor says there was no threat on the wire, and they are actually laughing about the situation.

The state finished their rebuttal. The judge is going to charge the jury after a quick break.

The jury is now deliberating.

Prosecutos laid out a timeline for jurors, with the last time Iyana Sawyer was seen and linking her to Johnathan Quiles.

PREGNANT NIECE MURDER TRIAL: PROSECUTION'S CLOSING ARGUMENT
