Opening statements start now in the death penalty trial of Johnathan Quiles. His niece, 16y/o Iyana Sawyer, disappeared in 2018. Prosecutors say he killed her because she was pregnant with his child. He pleaded not guilty. Jurors answered the death penalty question btwn 3 & 7.

A new 2023 ruling now allows a death sentence with only an 8 to 4 vote by the jury instead of the 12 to 0 previously needed.

General managers of junkyard, landfill testify in Jacksonville death penalty trial

Crime Prosecutors say Johnathan Quiles murdered his pregnant teenage niece, Iyana Sawyer, at his job at a Jacksonville junkyard then got rid of her body at a landfill. Author: Renata Di Gregorio, First Coast News (On Your Side) Published: 1:51 PM EDT September 18, 2023 Updated: 1:51 PM EDT September 18, 2023 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The scene was set for a jury Monday of where a Jacksonville man is accused of murdering his niece and disposing of her body.

Watched a bit of the Law&Crime live feed a few minutes ago and the victim's sister "SS" testified. It was heartbreaking. She said she had kept her promise to her sister about sexual abuse until she realized that her sister wasn't going to come home. :(

I adore this Judge. But why is he so worried with the scheduling? I haven’t heard it so much as I have in this case.
Jmo. I haven’t watched every minute. Anyone have insight to why?
Eta just heard him say he has other trials.
I got it. Lol.

It sounds like this guy was abusing every young girl in his family. They seemed to each think they were the only one.

When the "unties" (we say that here in VA too) were circling the wagons about how he was a predator, did anyone think to call authorities? I did not get to listen closely, but I have not heard that mentioned.
