PORT ORANGE -- The family of a Port Orange woman missing since Feb. 2 wants people to remember she is still missing and needs help to find her.

Port Orange resident Laurel Lea Rogers, 29, has been missing since February. For her mother, Lauretta Rogers, the situation is even more difficult now, simply because it's the first Christmas without the young woman.

As for Rogers, her disappearance also is an oddity, Lauretta Rogers said.

"She would never leave without calling or telling me where she was," the frustrated mother said Wednesday. "With it being the holidays, it's just tougher. I pray every day that we'll just get some answers."

Families fear waning attention in search of missing loved ones

Lauretta Rogers remembers seeing the news trucks outside her home after a trip to the Port Orange police station.

She had just reported her daughter Laurel Lea Rogers missing and hopes were high of finding her. The media could only help spread the word, she thought.

The story hit the airwaves. Days, weeks passed and nothing turned up.

Now more than two years later, Lauretta Rogers watches as police continue to scour the Central Florida region and the media is still abuzz about Michelle Parker, an Orlando mother with ties to Daytona Beach who went missing Nov. 17, the same day she appeared on the TV show "People's Court."

Lauretta Rogers can't help but feel pain for the Parker family, though she feels like she has been given the cold shoulder.

"My daughter is missing, too," she said through tears. "What (attention) I do get, I appreciate. We have to keep Laurel's name out there."

I'm fairly unfamiliar with this case, but Laurel is from Port Orange, Fla. And police have cadaver dogs at a home in Port Orange right now. They are searching the back yard of a man who was charged in late 2011 with raping a 9-year-old girl from his neighborhood.

I'm about to get caught up on this case. By the way, an acquaintance works for Port Orange PD, and I freelance for the local paper.

FYI: There are no missing children from within about 30 miles of Port Orange.
