I usually stick to the missing and unidentified, but since I live in the area, have a permit to carry and work with all guys that carry, this is a common sense issue. If you are carrying a weapon for defense purposes, im not sure why you are looking to instigate situations that aren't endangering you or anyone else. If the shooter wrote down the license plate, took a picture, and sent it to the police.. what would of happened? I think that is the missing element of this situation. alternatives to confrontation. Obviously we all thought, because we know guys (and gals) of all races that is "looking for confrontation guy".

This guy was looking to start a confrontation and his history of doing such doesn't surprise me. Should the victim have assaulted him, no.. should he have lost his life?, no.. avoidable conflict brought on by instigation makes this even more tragic. I suppose if this logic holds up, anytime someone assaults you you can kill them and that, thank God is not how the law is written. If the guy pushed and he reported him, fine the victim is in the wrong.. if you think this guy is going to kill you in broad daylight over a parking spot and talking crap to his wife.. I doubt that highly..

On a more controversial note, its like domestic violence in an aspect, one party might provoke someone into an altercation (which is wrong) and if physical violence occurs, does that give someone license to kill the person they might have goaded into a violent situation? You have to argue both sides of a coin to see the truth sometimes..

Glad I won't be on this jury. I can see both sides. IIRC, he didn't pull the gun until he'd been "pushed" to the ground?

If he'd just displayed the gun and let the man run away we wouldn't be here...moo.
Great point... if he pulled the gun an said back the F up, and he then advanced... different story..

MarziPanda wrote:"Even if you suspect someone might be illegally parking in a disabled spot, that might not really be the case. Some disabilities are invisible, and sometimes one's disabled badge might be out of sight. Mcglockton shouldn't have been parked there, but surely the shooter had no way of knowing that for sure prior to confrontation? Regardless of Mcglockton's parking actions, the shooter should not have taken the actions he did."

Truer words haven't been spoken.. my best friend in New York has a wife that has a heart condition, has a handicap sticker, and still gets vocal abuse when parking in spots when shopping. I constantly remind my hockey player friend to laugh it off because when people think their moral compass is justified and start acting a fool, they have no leg to stand on legally.

That's the point. Neither of us know. We can not possibly know. To say otherwise is ridiculous.

To insinuate it would have happened even if she hadn’t of parked there, IMO, is just as ridiculous.

Detective Fired After DUI Arrest Connected to Michael Drejka Case
Pinellas County January 4, 2019 @9:47 PM
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A Pinellas County Sheriff's Detective has been arrested and charged with DUI.
According to authorities, George D. Moffett Jr., 48, was arrested Thursday at 10:30 p.m. after showing up to a homicide scene drunk.
[...]
Moffett was arrested and charged with one count of DUI. He was transported to the Pinellas County Jail without incident.

Consistent with sheriff's office policy regarding members arrested for DUI, Moffett's employment was immediately terminated following his arrest, officials said.
[...]
It was Moffett who responded to the controversial shooting last year which resulted in the death of Markeis McGlockton and was initially dealt with as a "stand-your-ground" case.

Drejka's attorney, John Trevena, says he's counting Moffett's arrest as a win for his client's defense and a blow to prosecutors.

"It’s a huge boost for us. We couldn’t possibly ask for a better New Year’s gift for the Drejkas than that," Trevena explained. "That the lead detective gets arrested, and in kind of a heinous fashion, showing up at a crime scene drunk. Was he drunk when he went to the Drejka crime scene? I mean, come on!"

Trevena insists the state has no case, and that a jury cannot believe Moffett when he says this is not a "stand-your-ground" shooting.

"I’d just deposed him last month and I recall him vividly," he said. "What really stuck out in my mind is that he was very adamant in the deposition that he thought Mr. Drejka should’ve been arrested immediately. He was pushing hard for that, but the sheriff and chain of command said 'no.'"

Clearwater parking lot shooter may skip stand-your-ground hearing, argue self-defense before jury
January 11, 2019
LARGO — Defense lawyers for Clearwater parking lot shooter Michael Drejka said Friday they were leaning against using a stand-your-ground defense for their client, the strongest indication so far of their legal strategy ahead of a trial set to begin in August.

John Trevena, a lawyer for Drejka, said he and co-counsel Bryant Camareno are more likely to argue self-defense in front of a jury — the same route George Zimmerman's attorneys took when they won him acquittal in the 2012 shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

"We’re leaning toward letting a jury make the call," Trevena said.

The comments came after a hearing to clarify where Drejka can go while he is free on $100,000 bail and wearing a court-ordered electronic tracking device. Trevena said in court that his client ran into issues shopping at a CVS and voting because of what he called overreach by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, the agency responsible for enforcing the device.

Anchor Reginald Roundtree, at Channel 10 news more than 20 years, fired after internal review

ST. PETERSBURG — News anchor Reginald Roundtree of WTSP Ch. 10 was fired Friday, the station’s parent company said.
[...]
Roundtree, 60, had worked for CBS-affiliate WTSP more than 20 years, according to his online biography, most recently as the night news anchor. He previously worked as a Miami police officer and got his first TV job at WPEC Ch. 12 in West Palm Beach.
[...]
The termination follows a bizarre legal dispute involving prominent Pinellas defense attorney John Trevena. Trevena wrote in court documents that Roundtree, whom he called his “former best friend,” introduced him to a woman who stole money, jewelry and a car from Trevena and his wife. The woman, Deena Covell, is the sister of Roundtree's wife Tree.

The revelations raised questions about Roundtree's journalistic ethics.

Trevena is representing Michael Drejka, the man who shot and killed an unarmed Markeis McGlockton after McGlockton pushed Drejka down in a dispute over a convenience store parking space.

The shooting touched off a national debate about self defense and Roundtree enjoyed exclusive access to Drejka, including the opportunity to interview him while he was in custody at the Pinellas County jail. Trevena and Roundtree said their friendship was the reason for the interview, but Trevena on Friday defended his decision to bring in Roundtree, saying “he’s always been balanced in his reporting. The reason I chose him is not only because he was friend, but because he’s a good reporter.”

New attorney joins Clearwater parking lot shooter’s beleaguered defense team
St. Petersburg lawyer William Flores, who was admitted to the Florida Bar in 2014, has joined veteran defense attorneys John Trevena and Bryant Camareno on the case.

2.14.2019

"A new lawyer has joined Clearwater parking lot shooter Michael Drejka’s defense team as the cast of attorneys in the manslaughter case continue to shift in what has become its own sideshow outside the courtroom....

Prosecutors charged Drejka with manslaughter three weeks after he shot and killed 28-year-old Markeis McGlockton during a July 19 argument over a parking space. McGlockton had shoved Drejka to the ground in the moments before the shooting. The case ignited a debate over self-defense as Pinellas Sheriff Bob Gualtieri announced that he couldn't arrest Drejka because of Florida's stand your ground law....

Trevena and Camareno said Wednesday they both look forward to Flores helping them prepare for the upcoming trial, set to start Aug. 19.

“This is a serious homicide case,” Camareno said. “We need all the help we can get.”"

Wil Flores said he is now one of the three attorneys representing Drejka.
[...]
Flores said he may have only been practicing law for five years, but he’s eager to learn and brings a lot to the case.
[...]
Flores said he has to get caught up on everything in this case. But like most people, he heard about the shooting in the media and watched that surveillance video that captured it.

“Viewing this in the lens of a criminal defense attorney and a Stetson criminal defense attorney, I know that the court of public opinion doesn’t apply to the burden of proof that a court does, and that everyone would be looking at this through the lens of the camera that’s about 20 feet away and maybe 10 feet in the air,” Flores said. “When what really matters is how this case and horrible situation is viewed from the eyes of Mr. Drejka from the ground looking up.”
[...]
Flores admits he’s not perfect. He had a DUI arrest of his own from last year, but he said it has nothing to do with this case. He said his client, just like every client, deserves a proper defense.

Flores said he’s also representing Michael Drejka in an eviction case.

Girlfriend of Man Killed in Clearwater Shooting a Mother Again
PUBLISHED 4:44 PM EST Feb. 18, 2019
CLEARWATER, Fla. — The girlfriend of Markeis McGlockton, Britany Jacobs, is speaking out for the first time since she gave birth to their son one month ago.

Jacobs said she had no idea she was pregnant when McGlockton was shot and killed by Michael Drejka on July 19, 2018.

She said McGlockton was there for the births of their three other children — Markeis, Jr., 5, Marley 3, Marshawn, 11 months and Martavious, 1 month — so it was tough giving birth to their new baby on her own.

Drejka's lawyers may try to use McGlockton's drug use as part of their defense (with clip)
Michael Drejka's defense team has already deposed experts about some of the effects ecstasy can have on a person‘s behavior.

February 22, 2019

"CLEARWATER, Fla. — On Friday, defense attorneys offered what might be a glimpse at part of the defense strategy for parking lot shooter Michael Drejka....

Lab results show McGlockton had the drug ecstasy in his bloodstream when he was shot and killed by Drejka July 19.

Now, lawyers for Drejka appear ready to make that part of the 48-year old's defense.

“Well, it’s definitely going to play a role in the case,” said Drejka defense attorney John Trevena. “We believe a toxicology expert will testify that his use of illegal drugs, particularly surrounding the time of this incident, could very well have contributed to his aggressive behavior....

At Friday’s pre-trial hearing, his lawyers told the court it was impossible for Drejka and his wife to find housing in Pinellas County given his notoriety.

They asked for permission look for a place in Pasco County as well with the same conditions and same ankle monitoring.

The court granted the request with no objection from prosecutors....

Drejka's next pre-trial hearing has been set for April 26. His defense lawyers plan to ask the court not to allow testimony about any previous run-ins or bad behavior Drejka allegedly showed with other people before the day he shot McGlockton...."

Clearwater parking lot shooting to kick off 'Finding Justice' BET series produced by 'The Rock'
The first episode of the docu-series features the shooting of Markeis McGlockton by Michael Drejka and makes the case to repeal Florida’s stand your ground law.

3/9/2019

"CLEARWATER — The story of Markeis McGlockton, the Clearwater man killed last year in a parking lot shooting that touched off a debate about self-defense, is kicking off a docu-series about injustices facing black communities in America.

The premiere of the six-episode Black Entertainment Television series “Finding Justice” makes the case to repeal Florida’s stand your ground law and others across the country like it. It zeroes in on the shooting of McGlockton, an unarmed black man, by Michael Drejka, a white man, to make the argument that the laws disproportionately hurt black people and embolden white vigilantes to kill.

The episode, set to air at 8 p.m. Sunday, includes interviews with McGlockton’s family, state Sen. Darryl Rouson and Clearwater civil rights attorney Michele Rayner, as well as the rapper T.I. and comedian Rell Battle...."
