As an expert was showing bullet holes in Clayton’s ballistic vest, Loyd began crying and said to Clayton's husband, “I told you I didn’t try to kill your wife, bro."

The expert said the evidence on the vest shows the shot to the neck area, which investigators have said was the fatal shot, was in a shoulder strap of the vest. Loyd had claimed he was trying to shoot her in the vest.

Due to his outburst, Loyd was taken from the courtroom for a brief period of time.

5:15 p.m. update
The state calls Dr. Tonia Warner, chief medical officer and vice president of medical services at Meridian Behavioral Healthcare, to the stand.

4:40 p.m. update
The state calls Dr. Michael Maher, physician and psychiatrist, to the stand.

2:35 p.m. update
Dr. Michael Gamache said on the stand that he does not believe Loyd met the criteria for insanity at the time of Clayton’s shooting.

1:50 p.m. update
Court is resuming following a lunch break.
The state calls Dr. Michael Gamache forensic psychologist and forensic neuropsychologist to the stand.

11:10 a.m. update
The defense rests its case. Rebuttal is now underway.

LOYD TRIAL: State objected to having "heat of passion" as a line in jury instructions, but judge said a juror could interpret Loyd's testimony was heat of passion...she is going to look at her notes before ruling on this

LOYD TRIAL: Jury has been excused, but attorneys will be staying in court late to now go over jury instructions. This is also standard to go over language re: "heat of passion, self-defense, insanity" making sure jurors know exactly what they need to deliberate.

Loyd is saying he was beat up by police while he had cuffs on when arrested. This is something Loyd has brought up in numerous hearings leading up to his first murder trial. This was not part of evidence of the trial.

LOYD TRIAL: For context, the guilty verdict for the 2019 Sade Dixon trial took jury 4 and a half hours to return. That was also a death penalty case, took jury about an hour to recommend life instead of death in that case.

LOYD TRIAL: From prosecutors on this case: If a verdict is reached tonight, Penalty Phase starts Friday. If the Jury reaches a verdict tomorrow, the Penalty Phase will start on Saturday. I believe there will be a few days break in between for the jurors

Another request from the jury - they need tape and thumbtacks. Judge says no problem - they can easily accommodate that. Sounds like this jury is planning on visually laying out all the evidence and key points to carefully decide their verdict.

Judge brought the jury in and told them it would be tomorrow morning before the court can read back the testimony they're requesting. She told them to go back and keep deliberating for a while longer, but not too much longer. They've had a long day.
