Yeah, Mina tweets "we can move forward and never have to hear the name Markeith Loyd again".
Well, that's not true. Markeith Loyd's name will be heard with all of the upcoming legal tangles regarding sentence imposition and death penalty appeals.

ORLANDO, Fla. – A jury on Wednesday recommended the death penalty for Markeith Loyd in the murder of Orlando police Lt. Debra Clayton.
[...]
Although the jury recommended the death penalty, the judge will make the final decision whether to sentence Loyd to death or life in prison.
[...]
“I’m ready to get sentenced today,” Loyd said, waiving his right to a Spencer hearing, the opportunity for a defendant’s lawyers to present additional evidence to a judge before a sentence is entered.

Loyd will be sentenced on Jan. 14 if he waives his Spencer hearing in writing.

Exploring capital punishment in the Sunshine State

When it comes to discussing the death penalty, the conversation is prone to devolving into an emotional argument, yet capital punishment has a history in Florida that can be objectively examined in order to answer questions you may have about it.

Why does a death sentence cost more than life without parole?
At its most basic, the cost of sentencing one to death rather than keeping them in prison for the rest of their lives can be explained by pointing at the courtroom.

According to the Death Penalty Information Center, time is no issue here, rather it’s the high price of long trials and appeals that add up to far beyond what it would cost to pay for a life sentence. With death on the line, trials must be thorough, and because most people who face the punishment aren’t able to afford their own legal team, the state often pays for the cost of both defending and prosecuting these individuals.
[...]

What comes after a jury recommends the death penalty?
An individual who is recommended to face the death penalty by a jury may not be sentenced to it by a judge. After a jury recommends a sentence, it’s up to the judge to deliver a sentence.

Shortly after Loyd was recommended for death by the jury in his second murder trial though, he requested to be sentenced then and there. As we mentioned, Loyd still has plenty of costly hours in court ahead of him before anyone learns his fate.

Costs
Studies consistently find that the death penalty is more expensive than alternative punishments.

Overview
The death penalty is a moral issue for some and a policy issue for others. However, it is also a government program with related costs and possible benefits. Many people assume that the state saves money by employing the death penalty since an executed person no longer requires confinement, health care, and related expenses. But in the modern application of capital punishment, that assumption has been proven wrong.

The death penalty is far more expensive than a system utilizing life-without-parole sentences as an alternative punishment. Some of the reasons for the high cost of the death penalty are the longer trials and appeals required when a person’s life is on the line, the need for more lawyers and experts on both sides of the case, and the relative rarity of executions. Most cases in which the death penalty is sought do not end up with the death penalty being imposed. And once a death sentence is imposed, the most likely outcome of the case is that the conviction or death sentence will be overturned in the courts. Most defendants who are sentenced to death essentially end up spending life in prison, but at a highly inflated cost because the death penalty was involved in the process.

ORLANDO SENTINEL | FEB 07, 2022
Convicted cop-killer Markeith Loyd delivered a profanity-laced tirade at a Monday hearing as he struggled with deputies while trying to remove himself from the courtroom.

Loyd appeared to be frustrated by technology issues during the hearing that delayed a defense expert’s virtual testimony.
[...]
The judge will decide whether to follow the jury’s recommendation or sentence Loyd to life in prison. Marques allowed Loyd’s attorneys to present Amador’s testimony Monday because he was not available for a sentencing hearing last month.

The expert planned to testify about Loyd’s diagnosis of anosognosia, which impairs his ability to recognize his own mental illness, court records show. But at the start of Monday’s hearing, his attorneys told the judge Amador had also found Loyd incompetent.

After Loyd had an outburst and was escorted by deputies into a holding cell, defense attorney Allison Miller asked the judge to waive Loyd’s appearance at the hearing, saying she observed in a recent interaction that he was “full-blown psychotic.”
[...]
The judge said she was going to appoint two more experts to evaluate Loyd for competency. She tentatively scheduled a competency hearing for Feb. 21.

Loyd’s sentencing is set for March 3, but it now hinges on whether Marques will find him competent.
