Markeith Loyd in court

Sept 25, 2019

Accused double murderer Markeith Loyd appears in court

September 25, 2019

"ORLANDO, Fla. - Markeith Loyd, charged with murder in the shooting deaths of his pregnant ex-girlfriend and an Orlando police lieutenant, is in court Wednesday for what could be the last hearing before his first trial....

The defense's first motion sought to eliminate metal detectors for jurors. The defense argued that Loyd would be perceived as "dangerous" if metal detectors were used. Judge Leticia Marques said the public is used to metal detectors and denied the motion.

The second motion dealt with sequestering the jury....

The defense said it's also seeking nine statements made by Orlando police officers about the use of force investigation stemming from when Loyd was captured. The defense said they just found out they do not have the statements....

Jury selection is slated to begin Friday morning as Loyd faces trial in connection with the fatal shooting of his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon.

Loyd will have a second trial next year to face charges related to the shooting death of Orlando police Lt. Debra Clayton..."

Sep 25, 2019

"ORLANDO, Fla. —
Accused murderer Markeith Loyd was in court Wednesday for what may have been his final appearance before he goes to trial....

There are still some things up in the air about what will and will not happen with these two trials, but jury selection is still set to begin Friday.

The biggest gray area left after Wednesday's hearing was whether the judge will consolidate the two trials into one.

A judge denied that motion last month, at the same hearing when Loyd said he didn't want them consolidated.

On Tuesday, Loyd's attorneys said in a filing that he'd changed his mind.

It seems that decision hinges on what evidence from the Clayton case could be allowed in court for the Dixon murder case.

Parts of that could still be addressed at another hearing before witness testimony begins, so the judge did not rule Wednesday.

Also still at issue, the defense wants statements that were made by Orlando police officers involved in the use of force investigation surrounding Loyd's arrest....

The defense on Wednesday kept indicating that they need more time.

Loyd said today his first attorney on the case didn't do enough and despite the work his new attorneys have done, they're not ready yet...."

Jury selection begins in murder trial of Markeith Loyd

Sept 27, 2019

"ORLANDO, Fla. —
Selecting a jury for the first trial of Markeith Loyd could take several weeks.

That was made clear during the first day of the process Friday.

This trial is for the death of Loyd's ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon, and the baby she was carrying at the time of the killing.

Loyd is also accused of killing Orlando Police Lt. Debra Clayton, but will be tried separately for that case....

The jurors were told: if selected, they'll be sequestered...

Lenamon said he may motion for a continuance, since a psychologist determines Loyd's sanity at the time of the killings.

“My client had a continuing belief that the police wanted to kill him,” he said.

Without a formal motion, though, the judge said the trial is moving on.

Jury selection continues Tuesday, since the courthouse is closed Monday. Once a jury is seated, the trial is expected to last at least two weeks or more. Court will be held on Saturdays during the trial."

Knowledge of case, strong opinions of death penalty complicate Markeith Loyd trial jury selection (with clip)

Oct 2, 2019

"ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. - Many of the hundreds of people called in as potential jurors for Markeith Loyd’s first murder trial are being dismissed because they either are familiar with the case or are opposed to the death penalty....

The court is scheduled Friday to bring in an entirely new panel of 500 people to assess for the jury...."

Thanks for all the updates! Had no idea jury selection had started. I see defense tried to delay again. Smh. Glad the judge is pushing through.

Are the metal detectors really necessary? Who’s coming to spring Loyd out of court? Come on! That seems like overkill.

The governor really wants Loyd dead. Not sure it’s worth all the trouble. A capital case is going to make this whole process that much more difficult, drawn out, and costly. I feel like life in prison is good enough for Loyd.

Anyway I’m expecting this trial to be full of twists and turns. I hope the defense is not successful in disallowing cameras inside.

Jury selection continues in Markeith Loyd's first murder trial (with clip)

Oct 4, 2019

"ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -...The judge has gone through nearly 700 potential jurors, but Channel 9 learned about a possible timeline as to when testimony could start.

Most of the day was devoted to the initial screening of new jurors.

Over the past week, the first 500 jurors from last Friday went through several stages of the process.

Yet no one has been selected on the jury that will hear the trial surrounding Dixon's death.

So far, hundreds of people have been dismissed. Many of them know who Markeith Loyd is, know what he’s accused of doing and already believe he is guilty....

Also, there is confusion over how Dixon’s unborn baby fits into the case.

“I was under the impression that the state is only seeking death in count one, the murder of Sade Dixon. So, you’re telling me you’re seeking death in count two, the unborn child,” said Judge Leticia Marques.

The defense argues that prosecutors cannot seek the death penalty for the murder of Dixon’s unborn baby.

The judge said she needs more time to decide about the baby, which will be decided on in the hearing next week.

By the end of Friday, the judge believes she will have done basic screening on enough people to pull the final jury for the case."

MARKEITH LOYD TRIAL: Accused killer calm, collected as knowledge of case plagues jury selection (with clip)

Oct 8, 2019

"...The legal teams are going through the last of 750 potential jurors, trying to make sure their basic opinions and positions don't conflict with Loyd's right to a fair trial.

Tuesday marked the seventh day of jury selection and Loyd appeared cool, calm and collected in a cardigan sweater....

The biggest challenge of this case has been finding people who believe they can sit there during this trial and assume Loyd is innocent, until prosecutors convince them otherwise.

They have to be able to throw out what's now common knowledge about Loyd's other murder case...."

Judge Marques: “What’s your issue with testimony?"

Potential Juror: "I just believe sometimes people can be deceiving when it comes to their testimony.” #WFTV

Judge Marques: “The question is not what you would like to see, but whether or not you can follow the law in Florida and you’ve heard testimony, whether you can convict just on that."

Potential Juror: "I can’t. That would be kind of hard for me.” #WFTV

Markeith Loyd trial: Jury seated for trial of man accused of killing pregnant ex-girlfriend (with clip)

Oct 10, 2019

"ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. - A jury was seated Thursday afternoon for the first murder trial of Markeith Loyd, who is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and an Orlando police lieutenant....

The current trial is only for Dixon’s killing. Opening statements in the trial are scheduled to begin Friday....

Seating a jury in the case was difficult as Thursday marked day nine of jury selection. The biggest challenge was finding people who believe they can sit on a jury and assume Loyd is innocent until proven guilty, because the case is so well-known.

The final jury, and four alternates, is made up of 12 women and four men. After they were sworn in Thursday afternoon, the jury members were taken to a hotel. They will be sequestered through the end of the trial...."
