'Lt. Clayton's handcuffs are on the suspect:' Radio transmissions detail Loyd's arrest
Law enforcement officers waited and strategized as they surrounded the Carver Shores home where double murder suspect Markeith Loyd was hiding before he was arrested there on Jan. 17, bringing a nine-day manhunt to an end.

Radio transmissions among officers on the scene were released Wednesday by State Attorney Brad King's office, along with dozens of other pieces of evidence collected in the case.

"He came out the carport door and shut it, he's definitely inside," an officer said. About 45 seconds later, an officer asked anyone near the command post to bring Clayton's handcuffs to the scene "ASAP." As they started preparing to make an arrest, an officer asked if anyone had confirmed that the man in the home was in fact Loyd.

Hi everyone, hope you are all doing well. I am not "new" to Websleuths, been around since the Danielle van Dam case in 2002 (wow, 15 years ago). I don't post often, am more of a "sit back and read" kind of gal. Anyway, there is some good info. in the doc dump released a few weeks ago. The one that is titled "Memorandum of Law Regarding Admission of Williams Rule Inextricably intertwined Evidence" is 21 pages long and the first 5 pages give some good detail in the case. I didn't know if I could post a pdf. file so I'll leave a link to it and tell you how to log in to read it. Go to myeclerk.myorangeclerk.com/ and under "Court Records Search" click on "Criminal Case Records", it will bring you to a new screen and type in the first name "Markeith" and the last name "Loyd". Check that you are not a robot and then "Search". It will bring up all of his cases (and there's a lot). The one that contains the "Memorandum of Law ...." is under case number 2017-CF-000826-A-O. Once you click on that case the document should be there. The first 5 pages of the document contain the most information, the remaining pages are "arguments/prior cases" that support the "Admission of Williams Rule Inextricably intertwined Evidence". Happy Friday!

That should say I found Websleuths in 2000 when I was looking for more info. on the JonBenet Ramsey case. I also spent some time here reading about the Danielle van Dam case. I officially joined in 2004.

Markeith Loyd's trial date for Sade Dixon case set for September 2018

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/breaking-news/os-markeith-loyd-june-12-hearing-20170609-story.html

Accused killer Markeith Loyd could face a jury to decide his guilt in the death of his pregnant ex-girlfriend on Sept. 10, 2018, Chief Judge Frederick Lauten decided Monday in Loyd’s first court hearing since April.

Loyd is accused of murder in the killings of 24-year-old Sade Dixon and Orlando Police Lt. Debra Clayton, who was shot while trying to arrest him.

A trial date for the charges he faces in Clayton’s killing has not been set.

Jameis Slaughter, an ex-girlfirend of accused cop killer Markeith Loyd, was ruled incompetent to stand trial Wednesday afternoon.

Slaughter, arrested as law enforcement officers swept the region for Loyd after Orlando police Lt. Debora Clayton was fatally shot, faces a misdemeanor charge of giving a false name to police. She was not in court Wednesday.

Loyd is accused of killing Clayton and his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon. He is awaiting trial and faces the death penalty.

Markeith Loyd absent as trial dates set in killings of pregnant ex-girlfriend, police lieutenant - December 6th

Loyd’s lawyer, Roger Weeden, opted to proceed without his client since they were discussing administrative issues. He told the judge Loyd communicates with him during jail visits.

Loyd is slated to stand trial for Dixon’s death in September 2018. On Tuesday, the judge scheduled the trial in Clayton’s killing for Jan. 14, 2019. Loyd faces the death penalty.

Accused two-time killer fighting to hire expert witnesses without public's knowledge - January 31st

Defense attorneys representing accused killer Markeith Loyd secured at least a partial victory Wednesday in a hearing on their motion to hire expert witnesses in secret and pay them undisclosed sums of tax dollars.

Lauten’s ruling allowed for the defense to file requests for hiring witnesses under seal and have them ruled on privately. But Lauten refused to appoint a second judge, thereby keeping his own control over the process.

Orlando police delayed Markeith Loyd getting medical attention

The judge in the Markeith Loyd cases ordered attorneys Tuesday to set aside time to talk to the 194 witnesses in both killings he is charged with.

Loyd was not in court Tuesday. He faces the death penalty in the killings of Sade Dixon, his pregnant ex-girlfriend, and Orlando Police Lt. Debra Clayton, who tried to arrest him. He will have two separate trials — the Dixon case scheduled to begin Sept. 11, and the trial for Clayton’s killing set for Jan. 14, 2019.

Markeith Loyd interrogation recording may lead to more legal battles, experts say

"ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. - An interrogation recording of a man accused of killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend and an Orlando police lieutenant may lead to a legal battle of its own, according to legal experts.

WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said the recording could also affect the jury in Markeith Loyd’s two death-penalty trials.

Sheaffer said Loyd's lawyer will try to make sure a jury never hears the recording.

There have been dozens of court hearings about Loyd’s first trial since he was captured in January 2017, but the recording has yet to be mentioned.

The recording is of two detectives interviewing Loyd following a nine-day manhunt after Lt. Debra Clayton was gunned down in a Walmart parking lot. Clayton recognized Loyd as being sought in the shooting death of Sade Dixon and her unborn child.

In the 43-minute video, Loyd said thinks that a jury could interpret it as an admission of guilt, Sheaffer said.

But the stakes are high with two trials approaching....

Loyd's hearing is next week, but if he's going to challenge the admissibility of that tape, it will likely happen closer to the trial in September."

Prosecutor can stay on Markeith Loyd case, but lead defense attorney is dismissed
Markeith Loyd’s lead defense attorney withdrew from the case Friday, saying he was not qualified to be the lead attorney in a death penalty case when he was appointed.

Procedural rules require lead counsel to have tried at least two death penalty cases as co-counsel from start to finish.

This will likely delay Loyd’s trial dates. The trial for the killing of Sade Dixon, Loyd’s ex-girlfriend who was pregnant with his child, is set for September. Another trial, for the killing of Orlando Police Lt. Debra Clayton, is scheduled for January.

“The trial in September is not likely to happen,” Lauten said, suggesting moving the Dixon case to January and setting the Clayton case for a later date.

Judge for Markeith Loyd trial says he will likely push start date back

The judge presiding over the homicide trials of Markeith Loyd said he would likely be setting new, later trial deadlines that will give Loyd's defense more time.

No other major action was taken during a hearing on Thursday. Judge Frederick J. Lauten said he would likely not give the defense much more time than what is already scheduled, after calling the defense's argument for extension "weak."

“I’m thinking the January to April timeframe to try this case," Lauten said. "Maybe January is a little too soon, but I’d like to try it in the first quarter of next year.”

Statements reveal officers' mindset as they closed in on Markeith Loyd

Oct 8, 2018

"ORLANDO, Fla. - Four officers who witnessed Markeith Loyd's arrest told very similar stories about his final moments of freedom and about their mindset as they approached his hideout.

Each of them mentioned briefings about the murders of Loyd's pregnant ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon, and Orlando police Lt. Debra Clayton, both of whom he is accused of killing....

Last week, Loyd's lawyers demanded all evidence that Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents have in hopes they can prove Loyd wanted to surrender."

"ORLANDO, Fla. - Markeith Loyd's lawyers are trying to pull Orlando's police chief into the accused cop-killer's murder cases.

Body camera video was released last week from the night Loyd was captured and arrested.

Loyd’s lawyers said Chief John Mina should have gotten Loyd medical attention sooner instead of making public statements about the case....."

Markeith Loyd's lawyers have new questions about the night of his arrest (with clip)

Nov 1, 2018

"ORLANDO, Fla. - The lawyer for a man accused of killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend and an Orlando police lieutenant wants to know if law enforcement is covering up something from the night of his capture.

Investigators arrested Markeith Loyd outside an Orlando home after a nine-day manhunt. He is accused of fatally shooting Sade Dixon and Orlando police Lt. Debra Clayton.

Despite the serious crimes of which Loyd is accused, his lawyers said they want answers about injuries he suffered the night of his arrest.

Video recorded that night shows Loyd crawling out of the home in which he was hiding toward officers, as ordered.
The camera focuses in for about five seconds as officers apprehend him. There appear to be several kicks before the camera pans away, putting the rest of the incident out of clear view.

Loyd's attorney said he filed a motion in his client's murder case, not to defend the charges, but to get more information about how Loyd lost the use of one of his eyes....

The fact-finding mission appears to be unrelated to the charges Loyd faces, but WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said it is connected.

"When your client is facing the death penalty, you leave no stone unturned," he said. "You don't know what might affect a juror, not just in the criminal phase, but the sentencing phase."..."
