Family members are members here. As far as I can see, Shannon's gm has done nothing wrong. Some of the comments about her have been awful. I cringe when I read them knowing they are being read by family members.
So, IMO everyone here has the right to their opinion,

Class?? wow....this is such a classy case...NOT

I have not even said much about the "amma"...who btw has accused Rusty of abusing Tina...tho Tina never filed a report

Maybe Rusty will read this forum and get his feelings hurt??

I am not one of those who were commenting on the "manicure" etc

if you "support" Tina, fine...post positive things

I heard her chilling 911 call..and read how she acted

it is sad when children are taken by predators...Tina seems to have given her baby away

I guess more will be revealed in the trial

LM, the Grandmother has stated that she called Social Services when Shannon was born. She knew Tina wasn't fit to raise a child on her own. She tried to keep Tina home with her. She knew it, but apparently Tina didn't. Her own Mother knew she wasn't capable, yet the State let it happen?

How could you expect Grandma to fully blame her Daughter when she knew she wasn't capable to begin with?

Maybe your anger would best be directed at Social Services. The people who left this baby solely in her Mother's care.

CarrieBean, you're so right, thats what I've been trying to convey here,Tinas family has been on here several times, even before Shannon was found it was graciously explained to us in detail about Tinas diabilities,so its not like her disabilities were used as leverage after the fact.
Her family was VERY concerned from the start, and I commend Tinas mother for showing her unconditional love but most of all concern for both Shannon and Tina.
Its not a case of Mommy showing up after the fact for publicity, this family has been diligent in trying to get help for Tina in her early years, plus both Tina & baby after Tina had Shannon.
I know from first hand experience that it is almost next to impossible to get people like Tina the help they need, like I mentioned in one of my posts removed I have a grown son similiar in disabilies as Tina and we live it 24/7.
I believe all effort should be placed on
1) make sure Shannon is somewhere safe and loved
2) make sure Susan Baker is NEVER allowed out of prison, because she prays on children and tortures them!
3) get the help Tina needs now that she has needed since years,NOT PRISON, yes I believe Tina is a victim of Susan Baker resulting from lack of help from Social Services.

Too bad they didn't go to Florida and simply have Tina and Rusty arrested when they were in the act of smoking pot around the baby....

I for one would welcome a law that requires parents getting any form of assistance to take manditory random drug tests and remove kids if they fail period
enough is enough

hindsight is great

I hope Tina gets time, I don't care if it is in a mental hospital or a prison...just keep her away from kids, but of course you are welcome to have a different opinion. That is what is great about the USA

As far as "mentally ill" goes...that is far different from being criminally insane

I already posted the stats about mentally ill prisoners...lots of them have mental illness
and frankly there are a lot of people incarcerated who are on the low end of the IQ scale

age 13 mentality is not that low

this was a very lucky thing that Shannon is not dead..and it is NO thanks to Tina

I am sure it is hard to get help for mentally ill family members...however, once they are out of control and commit crimes I think they need to be kept away from society

how could anyone ever trust Tina with a child ?? I would worry about her getting bored or distracted and leaving the baby in a locked car...or failing to watch her and let her wander out into the street or whatever

it would always be a worry IMHO

I heard that 911 call....very scary

One thing we can agree on is how bad social services are..especially in Florida...there is a really chilling article that shows how budget cuts have made it so that only a fraction of the "report" calls that come in to report abuse are even acted on

So true. Thank you for saying this.

The first laws for children were started in the early 1900's by the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or whatever it was called then. Animals had more rights than children and those people were very upset.

It seems like children are the last to be taken care of in the world. It would be nice if children weren't considered to be possessions by the parents and Social Services could actually get in a home and help children. I don't think this is the case right now in the US.

I hope someday that children start having the rights that they should have.

We freak out about puppy mills, but people can have as many children as they want and not take care of them. I know to stop it would be problematic, but why should innocent little babies be born into families that cannot possibly take care of them? Why do the adults have more rights than the infant?

I see little infant eyes looking with their little bright selves, going home to hell from the hospital. They did not ask to be born into that.

Hi Human...

I really agree...

Florida seems to be one of the worst....our DCF track record is horrible and it has been overhauled various times...yet now we have a new report that so many calls to "report" abuse are just shelved and ignored..shocking

Thousands of abuse reports to a DCF hot line go unheeded every month because of a new screening process intended to keep the strained system functioning.

A finding of the joint review: About 46 percent of the cases studied by the two administrators -- BSO's James Walker and DCF's Kimberly Welles -- ultimately were phoned back to the hot line by BSO investigators who concluded the children remained at risk, said Riordan, a DCF spokesman in Broward.

Statewide, Abramowitz said, about 6 percent of prevention referrals are phoned back to the hot line.

the rest of the article is here...
http://www.miamiherald.com/569/story/1356292-p3.html

the "new system" means they just ignore a lot of the calls due to budget cuts

I think these social workers should be accountable too

They should be accountable, but I am sure they are at the bottom of the food chain. The money comes from the govt. and the legislators decide how it will be spent.

Who is the govt? We are the govt. We don't want to pay up front. We would rather spend the money on incarceration, I guess, when these children who are not taken care of end up in prison when they become old enough.

There was a wonderful program on public radio today . It was a principal from Denver, perhaps. I am driving, so in and out of the car. He wanted to join a gang in third grade. He has written a book on what children need to succeed. Too bad I can't remember anything and I told myself I would.

But what he is suggesting takes MONEY. Are we willing to spend it?

Susan Baker is a master manipulator - she even had a presumably normal Tabs defending her right up to the last minute. I for one wouldn't want SB around any of my children/family. JB was still with her even though SB was/is the prime suspect in the disappearance and apparent murder of his own son - that tells me a lot.

While I think that SB is a total monster, I don't think hardly any mothers would simply walk out and give up their baby

Let's get real here

it is NO thanks to Tina that Shannon is alive

she had 5 days to confess...to "save" her baby and she did nothing

I felt pretty sure this was an inside deal from the start...cause they never showed pictures of the "grieving mother" who probably was suspect from the start

the "babysitter" also seemed hincty from the start

in regards to social services...yes I agree the laws need to change...and maybe their focus

Yesterday was suppose to have been a hearing on charges I would think. I cant find anything or anyone that I know here in Chipley that knows anything. Im not sure who to call and ask. No matter who it is, is not going to be very nice to me. Florida has the sunshine law, but Chipley doesnt. lol.

I haven't posted on this thread since the very early in the case, but still follow Baby Shannon.

Anywho...I found some info about yesterday's hearing and thought I would post it here, for you, and others:

Baker, Mercer Plead Not Guilty

<snipped>
Both women accused in the case of once-missing baby Shannon Dedrick pleaded not guilty Monday before a judge sent them back to jail.

Neither Susan Baker nor Crystina Mercer had much else to say at arraignment.
“Are you going to give me bail?” was Baker’s only question for the judge, who restated her $150,000 bond and said, “Right now, that will remain your bond.”

Mercer, 25, the baby’s mother who allegedly agreed to give her up, said even less.
Register set a Jan. 7 pretrial conference for each case.

Some information not included in the article / link above, including videon from: http://www.wjhg.com/news/headlines/79248957.html

<snipped>
The baby’s mother, Crystina Mercer, faces a long list of criminal charges including interference with custody, desertion, false report of a crime to law enforcement, giving false information to law enforcement during investigation and unlawful or misuse of the 9-1-1 system.

Susan Baker, the child's babysitter, appeared via video conference from the Bay County Jail where she pled "not guilty" to charges of aggravated child abuse, interference with custody and giving false information to law enforcement during investigation.

Crystina Mercer is due back in court tomorrow morning in Chipley for her dependency hearing, which is closed to the public.

Good...how funny that Susan wanted her bail lowered...>>NOT

I am glad they are keeping both of them

I can only hope that the courts did the right thing today...I don't think Tina deserves to have that baby back.. she is alive but no thanks to Tina

As far as being "bi=polar"..so what?? lots of people are bi=polar...Patty Duke is..
they take their meds..they may have some problems but MOST of them don't do things to their kids like this

Huge cop out. There is a young mom missing....an RN ..who happens to be bi-polar
Bi polar is a chemical imbalance...if Tina really cared about her child she would have taken her meds

I have zero concern for Tina and her boo hoo problems..>I just hope they can keep her from producing more kids that she can't take care of and might endanger again

Tina had no concern for her own child or she would have admitted her hoax/ruse whatever it was
Tina also had no concern for "our" state...which has other missing kids to look for...Haleigh...Adji, Trenton Duckett and who knows how many more

Will Susan and Tina pay back Florida for this horrible dangerous "hoax"??

Oh..and no one has produced a decent picture of that poor baby...just the one where they propped her up in the messy trailer in a diaper, bare chested and took her picture...just lovely :)

I guess buying another beer or joint was more important

(((((((hugs))))))))) to Tina and her family. I've been praying for all of you and for Shannon.

I really am wondering why you would send (((hugs)) to Tina herself..

on the thread about this poor little guy Marc, whose mom seems to be more worried about her felon lover than her son, people are not sending her (((hugs)))

nor do we send Antoinette Davis, the biomom of Shaynia any hugs...and her mother "graciously" defends her (called her a "good up mother" LOL)

sorry...to me Tina is just another bad mother and criminal and I would rather hug a hedgehog than hug her

and apparently Florida agrees with me..as they charged her with all the various crimes

now...I would really love to see some of the incompetant social workers who allowed this baby to stay in that "home" get fired

LogicalMinds, I am surprised to see someone offering hugs to Tina also. For the sake of Shannon, I hope that she is never allowed custody of that sweet baby again.

"'She had everybody fooled"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

<snip>

CHIPLEY — When sheriff’s deputies found Crystina Mercer sitting on a rock outside her trailer, smoking a cigarette and casually wondering where her baby daughter could be, they wondered if it might be a Halloween prank.

Not quite.

A 911 call, released Tuesday, became the latest piece of the case against Mercer and her step-aunt, Susan Baker, whom investigators said conspired to make 7-month-old Shannon Dedrick disappear
.....

Mercer’s report was strange from the moment deputies arrived, as they said she was calm and smoking outside the dirty, roach-infested trailer while the baby’s father, James “Rusty” Dedrick, was distraught, his face streaked with tears.

He didn’t know of the plan, Sheriff Bobby Haddock said. Meanwhile, Baker kept the baby and denied any involvement.

“She had everybody fooled,” Baker’s niece, Tabatha Phillips, said Tuesday in reaction to the arrests. In previous days, she had defended her.

(mistake there....Baker is not the "step aunt" of Tina, but of Rusty I think ?? )

and let's hear that cool and calm 911 call again....to me Tina sounds like she can speak and get her point across....just oddly calm...very polite

http://www.newsherald.com/video/?videoId=49633790001&lineupId=1171892348&play=now
what was she wearing..."a diaper"...

I still am waiting to see a picture of that poor baby (before she was found) other than the one sitting in a mess in a diaper

LogicalMinds, I am surprised to see someone offering hugs to Tina also. For the sake of Shannon, I hope that she is never allowed custody of that sweet baby again.

Oh I so agree

This was truly a miracle that Shannon was found alive

both Tina and Susan Baker had all that time to "confess" and save Shannon and they didn't do squat

I really am wondering why you would send (((hugs)) to Tina herself..

I can cyber hug anyone I want without your approval or harassment. Thank you.

I couldn't agree more. I have never seen a thread at ws where family members (not to mention ws members) have been repeatedly "spoken to" in such a way.

No one, including Tina's family, has said that she should 'get off' but that she should get help...if that involves time in a medical facility where she is under security, and that is what a judge decides, then that may be what is best for her. Our argument is that she does not deserve to go to prison but to get help....

Can I point out again as well that we dont KNOW that she gave SB the baby, that is SB's claim and Tina denies it. If you are such a Logical Thinker you should be familiar with the constitution and every persons rights including that they are innocent until proven guilty.

The 'angry' look you think you saw in her photos...first of all, wouldn't you be angry if you had just found out that the person you trusted your child with was a convicted child abuser, had 'lost' another child in her care, and had your child in a box under a bed for a good part of the past 4 days?

My point is, to put it bluntly, that you really don't know enough about her that is FACT, and not allegation or rumor, to make any judgements about her at this point. But as usual, I don't expect anything I say to change anyones mind...just trying to remind people that there are 2 sides to every story and you definitely don't see the full story about anything in the news, so drawing dead set conclusions from limited news reports is neither fair nor logical

Thank you for putting this so eloquently. I had to step away from this argument, after realizing it was doing no good to keep repeating what you and Tina's mom and several of us here had said over and over.

I was told here recently I am too soft hearted, as if that is a bad thing; the truth behind that statement is I'm trying to keep an open mind and a few of the others here have their mind closed so tightly that they are not able or willing to see/hear what is being said.

Mental illness is a heart breaking disorder, add to that everything else Tina was going through just by having contact with the bakers. Thank you for being such a loving advocate for Shannon and Tina. Please know that there are more people here who are in Tina's corner than against her.

I apologize for some of the posts you have been subjected to, after we welcomed you here, I am truly embarrassed. Please continue posting up dates on Shannon and Tina as you get them, for the majority of us, as we continue to keep all of your family members in our prayers.

Youre absolutely right, Shannon may be affected for years, BECAUSE OF WHAT SUSAN BAKER DID!! Shannon might be recognized as the "baby in the box" BECAUSE OF WHAT SUSAN BAKER DID!!! The foster mother has to cover Shannons face BECAUSE SUSAN BAKER EITHER KIDNAPPED OR DIDNT BRING SHANNON BACK AND SHANNON WAS HELD BY SUSAN BAKER FOR DAYS AND KEPT UNDER THE BED IN A BOX AND THIS STORY TOUCHED SO MANY PEOPLE THAT NOW SHANNON IS WELL KNOWN TO MANY, ALL OF THIS DOESNT ERASE THE FACT THAT TINA SUFFERS FROM MENTAL ILLNESS AS SHE HAS SINCE SHE WAS A CHILD.

Have you ever been exposed to people with mental illness ? Never mind:banghead:

susan baker is a monster, the fact that her relatives did not warn the younger family members to keep their small children away from her is mind boggling. :tsktsk:

Simlyme thank you and I agree, some people don't want to understand. Just. Never. Mind. :shakehead:

Anyone who knows MI, knows nothing is as it seems from the outside and anyone who hasn't experienced it in their life should consider themselves to be truly blessed. I hope they never do.
