Thanks to Angel, for all of the hard, laborious work you do in getting the vast amount of information from all of these cases to us! Thanks Soulscape for the charts and clarification.

I feel so sick at what this person has done and potentially did to little Summer. I am so tired and sick of it all. I was molested as a young (and I mean YOUNG) child and I am so deeply afraid that we are not doing what is necessary to stop these people. I sign petitions, I speak openly about my trauma, I read here and care so much for all of the innocent children, families and adult victims and it just feels so overwhelmingly like nothing is going to change.

Do we march on Washington? I was never a proponent of the death penalty but I am now. These people are beyond help, honestly... what is the recidivism rate 98% or near that? The average pedophile has an average of 100 victims before ever getting caught, and that is the statistic for the ones who are caught- what about the ones, such as family members that will never come before a judge or become part of a statistic? What can we do to ensure that these people are taken off the street, for good, never to harm a child again? I never thought that I would say this but do they deserve a second chance?

Thanks for being such a wonderful group of people and for giving us all a voice... I want a different world to raise my little ones in... all of our little ones!

Jarred Harrell appeared again in court Thursday morning, but wore a different outfit than the one he had on Wednesday. Instead of the traditional striped jumpsuit most inmates wear, Harrell had on a green protective suit. When questioned by reporters, a sheriff's deputy it is commonly worn by inmates to protect themselves. A representative from the state attorney's office said he has seen the outfit used most often for inmates who are suicidal, although no one would say if this is the case with Harrell.

Rod Buchanan's stepdaughter once lived with Harrell at an Orange Park apartment. He told First Coast News today that his family is "shocked" over the new charges.

Harrell is facing 12 counts of producing child *advertiser censored* and one count of child molestation. That's in addition to the 29 counts of possessing child *advertiser censored* he's already charged with. Harrell only said four words. When Judge Richard Townsend asked Harrell if he had any questions, Harrell replied "No, sir." When asked if he understood his rights, Harrell said "Yes, sir."

Harrell's arraignment on all charges is 9 a.m. March 10.

LAW & DISORDER: Harrell's counts add up with molestation, child *advertiser censored* charges
He remains a person of interest in the slaying, disappearance of Somer.

Story updated at 1:14 AM on Friday, Feb. 26, 2010
<snipped>
Jarred Mitchell Harrell appeared before a Clay County judge Thursday morning for the second time in two days, this time on charges of molesting a young child and 12 counts of child *advertiser censored*.

County Judge Richard Townsend returned Harrell to the county jail without bail on the charges - lewd and lascivious conduct on a child younger than 12 and producing child *advertiser censored*. Authorities served the new arrest warrant on Harrell on Wednesday, a few hours after he faced Townsend on 29 counts of child *advertiser censored*. Harrell was returned to the Clay jail on $1 million bail in the first case. One thing different Thursday was that Harrell was wearing a thick, smock-like body cover designed to prevent inmates from ripping any clothing they are wearing to commit suicide. Harrell is being held in isolation in the jail.

Townsend scheduled arraignments for Harrell on March 10. Harrell, 24, has also been named a person of interest in the Oct. 19 disappearance and slaying of Somer Thompson, 7, but he has not been charged in that case.

Jarred Harrel, the Only Person of Interest in the Somer Thompson Murder Case, Wears a Green "Suicide Blanket" to Court Thursday
Created: 2/26/2010 3:57:27 PM
Updated: 2/26/2010 4:36:07 PM
<snipped>
When Jarred Harrell appeared in court Thursday wearing protective gear, it raised questions about why and what the gear might be protecting him from. Police have called what Harrell was wearing a suicide blanket. But officials in Clay County, where Harrell is being help, are not commenting on the gear, or whether or not he's on suicide watch. All agencies use gear similar to the blanket when there's a concern with an inmate. Typically, inmates are stripped of their clothes and bedding.

The version the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office uses looks a little different but has the same purpose. "It's sturdy material, probably five to seven pounds (and) keeps them warm. (It's) triple stitched; that is to prevent them from tearing off strips so they can't potentially hang themselves or harm themselves, said JSO Chief Tara Wildes today.

Clay County's policy is to screen all inmates for suicidal concerns when they are first incarcerated. If an inmate is on a suicide watch, their cells are stripped and the inmate is monitored every 15 minutes.

Court records, obtained by First Coast News, show Clay County detectives believe Jarred Harrell took pictures of a little girl in the bedroom of his Gano Avenue home. According to Harrell's arrest warrant involving the molestation and production of child *advertiser censored* charges, detectives seized a digital camera belonging to the 24-year-old at his home in Callahan, Fla. The camera was found while police were serving a search warrant at the Nassau County house two weeks ago.

The arrest warrant states detectives found, on the camera's storage data card, a video and 11 still images. Police described the pictures as that of "a partially nude, white female child between the ages of 3- to 5-years old."

According to the warrant, the little girl was asked to "...place herself in different positions during recording." :cry: It states Harrell "...was also seen on the recording taking his hand and spreading" the little girl's body parts in order to expose her genitals. :cry:

The warrant said the child's mom identified the girl as her daughter. Police said the pictures were taken between August and November 2008, when the child was 3. :cry:

The mother also told police the video of her daughter was taken in Harrell's bedroom, in his Orange Park home, at 1152 Gano Ave. The girl's mother was able to identify the room by looking at other pictures on Harrell's camera, which were taken at the same time as the video, police said.]

Exclusive: New, bizarre details in Jarred Harrell's childhood
Last Update: 4:50 pm
<snipped>
Action News uncovered new details about the man who raised Jarred Harrell for several of his formative childhood years. The details are about Harrell's step father who "married" Harrell's 8-year-old sister and claims to be a "messenger of God", according to court documents.

A search of several regional newspapers and You Tube.com shows Harrell's step father, Joseph Newman, was a guest on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Newman was an inventor and one of his inventions brought him national attention. He was also on CNN and written about in Time magazine.

Action News' Kristen Cosby traveled to Harrell's hometown of Lucedale, Mississippi a few weeks ago. That is also where Harrell was raised by Newman in the late 1980's. Cosby uncovered Harrell's parents divorce documents in Lucedale. Those documents showed Harrell and his sister were put in the custody of child welfare after Newman "married" Harrell's sister. The documents show Newman "spiritually married" Harrell's mom after legally marrying his first wife, Ellen. Later, Harrell's mom legally married Newman. Before that, court papers show Newman announced to the world he "married" Harrel's eight-year-old sister.

Regional Newspaper articles uncovered by Cosby give more details about Newman's "marriage" to the child. One article from the "Mobile Press Register" quotes Newman talking about when he will consummate the marriage with the girl. He says it is "her business, my business and God's business." The Clarion Ledger out of Jackson, Mississippi talked with Harrel's mom back in 1989. It said: "Asked if she would mind having her daughter's children fathered by newman, {She} said. 'I wouldn't think it's something I've thought about, but its nothing I have a problem with.'"

Based on Internet searches, Newman still claims to be a messenger of God. He is now preaching the world will end in 2012.

Attorney General answers tough questions about Harrell's arrest
Last Update: 6:30 pm
<snipped>
Attorney General Bill McCollum wasn't in Jacksonville to discuss the arrest of Jarred Harrell but since he's the chief law officer for the state, we asked him questions about the investigation into Harrell.

When we asked why it took so long to investigate Harrell and issue an arrest warrant, he said "it was not the first priority of the Clay County Sheriff's Office." There were several other child *advertiser censored* cases underway at the same time. Even though Harrell has been named a person of interest in Somer Thompson's murder, McCollum says the child *advertiser censored* was a separate investigation. "There was no indication it had anything to do with her."

His child predator cybercrimes unit investigates a large volume of child *advertiser censored* cases all the time. Their first priority is going after adults trying to lure children over the internet. His office investigates by going undercover and posing as children online. "Immediately, within five to ten minutes, you'll be solicited for sex, probably multiple times."

McCollum's office played a big part in helping to get Harrell behind bars. He's now facing charges of possession of child *advertiser censored*, producing *advertiser censored* and molesting a child.

UPDATED: Documents Detail Harrell's Stay In Jail
State Attorney Angela Corey Provides Answers In Somer Thompson Case

POSTED: Monday, March 1, 2010
UPDATED: 9:22 pm EST March 1, 2010
<snipped>
The jail documents released Monday give a detailed inmate log that breaks down minute by minute where Harrell went in the jail and what he has done. It also documents when he's been involved in an incident, which is basically any time something happens out of the ordinary with an inmate. In the last six days, according to the records, Harrell has had five incidents. His first one was within hours of his arrival on Wednesday.

The report says corrections officers found 95 purple and gray capsules in Harrell's property. The capsules were identified as over-the-counter stacker pills, or weight-loss medication.

Later that same day, shortly after Harrell made his first appearance in court, he was taken back to his cell, but for an unknown reason transferred to the medical unit. The reason isn't clear because on the medical report, which reads, "Harrell was to be placed on ... " the words that follow are blacked out. The report says all of Harrell's property was confiscated. And when he made another court appearance to his additional charges the next day, he was wearing a special vest that prevents inmates from using their clothing to commit suicide. Harrell's other three incidents appear to be for contraband, according to the documents. The incidents include things like having mustard, salt and pepper packets, candy wrappers and old newspapers.

Harrell's first phone call from jail was made Friday and another call was made Monday morning. He has asked for a public defender, according to the paper work, because he can't afford a private attorney. The only visitor on his list is his mother. But it doesn't appear she's seen Harrell because he's in confinement and is not allowed to have any visitors other than an attorney.

Meanwhile, Corey said the child-molestation and *advertiser censored* charges Harrell faces give investigators time to keep him in jail as they work on the Somer Case. "With Harrell being arrested on these other charges, it gives us the luxury of time to work the physical evidence in the Somer case, and that's what we are doing," Corey said. She said investigators have time on their side and they want to get all the facts and evidence in line. Corey said Harrell is not going anywhere.

Warrant: Harrell 'posed' 3 year-old for *advertiser censored*
3/1/10 Last Update: 6:54 pm
<snipped>
The outside of Jarred Harrell's mother's house is like any other home, but newly released documents from the Clay County Sheriff's Department say what went on behind those doors was criminal.

Action News went to Harrell's mom's house to talk with her, but we were asked to leave. Since then, no trespassing signs were put up.

The warrant released Monday says the home is where investigators found a data card with *advertiser censored* of the 3 year-old on it. According to detectives, the card contained 11 still pictures and one video. The report goes on to say, Harrell is seen in the video posing the child and heard asking her "to place herself in different positions." It says the video was recorded in Harrell's bedroom.

Neighbors told Action News children lived in Harrell's mother's home. The Department of Children and Families could not comment, but said if children were in the home it would investigate. A spokesperson said "rest assured we'd be making sure kids are safe."

Other documents released today detail the 29 pictures of child *advertiser censored* found on Harrell's computer. The descriptions are graphic.

Man Has Bizarre Connection To Harrell
Jarred Harrell Named Person Of Interest In Killing Of Somer Thompson

POSTED: Thursday, March 4, 2010
UPDATED: 5:56 pm EST March 4, 2010
<snipped>
Joseph Newman, who's predicting the possible end of the world in 2012 and has been featured on the Johnny Carson show for inventing a well-publicized energy machine, has a bizarre connection to Jarred Harrell, the man named as a person of interest in the killing of Somer Thompson.

Two newspaper articles that are more than 20 years old detail how Newman married Harrell's mother and his 8-year-old sister. Newman told the newspaper God told him to do it. Harrell's mother told the paper that her daughter loves Newman and is committed to him.

After a custody fight, Harrell and his sister went to live with their biological father.

Harrell's biological father, who spoke to Channel 4 in a phone interview from Mississippi, said he took care of his children for five years to get them away from what was going on. He said after that, when their mom left Newman, she got her children back.

Child protection begins with recognizing the lures
Somer Thompson case prompts seminar on predators' tricks.

Story updated at 9:40 AM on Sunday, Mar. 7, 2010
<snipped>
In the same church where 7-year-old Somer Thompson was memorialized after her October abduction and murder, about 300 parents came together Saturday night to learn how to protect their children.

Child protection expert Ken Wooden didn't disappoint, providing parents with a list of the most common lures that predators use to attract and seduce their victims.

"If predators are using lures, shouldn't we be teaching our kids the lures?" Wooden asked. "You can lure anybody if they don't know the lure."

Pastor David Tarkington of First Baptist Church of Orange Park said the two-hour seminar was prompted by Somer's murder, just a few blocks away. He said a member of his church, Kim Hurse, led a grassroots effort to bring Wooden to Clay County.

Hurse said she was pleased that representatives of state and local government, the School Board, law enforcement and the justice system showed up. The event was simulcast by First Coast News.

That's the goal of Children's Safe Passage, a volunteer organization founded by Atlantic Beach businessman Mike Williams after Somer's slaying. He and his colleagues attended the seminar and are hoping for a similar grassroots groundswell to convince school officials in Northeast Florida.

"It's all about prevention," Williams said. "We just have to sleep easy at night knowing that we're doing everything we can to prevent another Somer Thompson tragedy."

Members of Somer's family also attended. "It was very compelling," said her grandmother, Debbie Bowling. "It's too late for us, but hopefully it will help other families."

Most common lures
*Affection: Preys on child's need for attention and affection. Identified by inappropriate behaviors.

*Assistance: Appeals to helpful nature of children. May also offer assistance and insist on providing it.

*Lost pet: Enlisting child to help find lost pet.

*Authority: Posing as authority figure, using fake badges. Wooden advised to teach children to ask to see a marked police vehicle.

*Bribery: Offering something for nothing, rewards for keeping abuse secret.

*Ego/fame: Appeals to ego using modeling school, talent search.

*Emergency: Telling child there's an emergency, offering or asking for assistance.

*Fun and games: Hiding prizes, tying or locking up, undressing give excuse for inappropriate touching.

*Threats and weapons: Verbal threats, seldom use weapon.

**advertiser censored*: Exploits child's curiosity about sex and desensitizes them to sexual behavior.

*Drugs: Incapacitates young children, used to bribe older kids.

*Online/electronic threats: Predators, peers, self-exploitation in form of sexting.

First Coast linked to growth in child *advertiser censored*
Authorities fear easy access to the material is leading to an increasingly large audience.

Story updated at 3:19 PM on Sunday, Mar. 7, 2010
<snipped>
More children are in danger than ever before. And more people interested in child *advertiser censored* are being caught than anyone ever knew existed.

If it seems like reports of child *advertiser censored* are growing, it's because they are. In Florida, a federal task force dedicated to rooting out child exploitation from Jacksonville to Orlando brought more cases last year than any other district in the country. And the only person linked to the slaying of 7-year-old Somer Thompson is in jail on unrelated charges of possessing child *advertiser censored*, producing it himself and abusing a young girl.

The Internet and cheap technology have made creating and sharing the illegal images easier than ever, fostering what authorities fear is a growing audience.

Research has consistently shown a strong connection between viewing child *advertiser censored* and sexually abusing children. But in the so-far unsolved case of Somer, who went missing on the Orange Park street where the person of interest was living, experts caution against drawing too many conclusions about what having child *advertiser censored* means a person is capable of.

So far, the Clay County Sheriff's Office has kept quiet about what evidence might link Jarred Harrell, 24, to the girl who was killed in October. Her cause of death has not been made public, and Harrell has not been charged in her death.

"One thing we never knew in the early days is how many pedophiles were out there," said Howell, a founder 25 years ago of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. "With the Internet, we learned there are a whole lot more out there than any of us imagined."

Though generally linking the viewing of the illicit images to child homicide is decidedly a stretch, research is consistent that the compulsion to watch is strongly linked to the compulsion to act out. "All the experts and professionals in the area have concluded this is not just 'someone looking at pictures,' " Howell said.

Nationally, the federal government prosecuted about 100 cases per year nationwide in the early 1990s. Investigations have ramped up steadily since, and more than 2,200 suspects were taken to federal court in 2008, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

There were 86 cases of child exploitation- and *advertiser censored*-related charges prosecuted in the Middle District of Florida last year, up from 50 cases five years before. Although some cases - including Harrell's - are tried by the state attorney, a recent change in federal law allows the U.S. Attorney's Office to go after virtually any child *advertiser censored*-related offense and impose a mandatory minimum sentence of between five and 15 years.

Karen Gable, a federal prosecutor in Orlando, said that doesn't necessarily mean there's more of it happening here; just that the resources dedicated to catching and punishing offenders are vast. But she acknowledges the field has grown substantially since she began prosecuting sex crimes a decade ago.

Gable, regional coordinator for the nationwide movement known as Project Safe Childhood, attributes this in part not only to the ease of using the Internet but the support system it provides to people who used to often think they were alone in their feelings.

"Society has a very strong more against abusing children," Gable said. "But now they can find each other and start validating what they're doing. I think people talking to each other - file-sharing images they no longer even have to buy - has really contributed to the increase."

She says she's seen a mixed bag of offenders, some with criminal records of contact offenses against children and others without. But she stresses that child sexual abuse is the most under-reported crime, and there's no way to know for sure how many child *advertiser censored* consumers are acting on their urges. Even if they never do, the damage has been done, Gable said.

Not only do these offenders view crime scene photos of children being abused, they're creating a demand for more and more abuse to be recorded and put out on the Web forever. "They always fear someone will recognize them," Gable said. "It's a whole other level of victimization."

More than 300 hear child safety expert offer advice on sexual predators
March 8, 2010
<snipped>
Somer Thompson’s grandmother was among 300 people who came to hear child safety expert Ken Wooden give advice on how parents and other adults can teach children how to protect themselves from increasing numbers of sexual predators.

When the two-hour presentation held at First Baptist Church on Saturday, March 6, was over, Debbie Bowling said she can only hope Wooden’s message might someday spare others from living the nightmare she has endured the past four months.

"It’s too late for Somer, but I hope this will help other families," she said, standing near a pew where she and her daughter, Diena Thompson, cried together during an October memorial service for the 7-year-old child who was abducted and murdered on her way home from Grove Park Elementary School. "It was very compelling," Bowling said. "There are evil people living out there."

Wooden, a former journalist, told his audience that the best way to protect children is to teach them the ploys predators use most often. "Pedophiles are organized and they don’t give up," he said to an even mix of men and women, including Clay County School Board members, county commissioners and Sheriff Rick Beseler. "If predators are using lures, shouldn’t we be teaching our kids the lures?"

Based on interviews he has had with convicted child abductors, rapists and murderers about their methods, he presented several examples of those lures, the most common of which is exploiting a child’s "endless need for affection or attention." He said pedophiles engage children in conversation to learn what types of relationships they have with their parents -- and what type of relationship their parents have with each other.

"A predator once said to me, ‘Show me a boy whose dad is psychologically absent and I’ll show you my next victim,’" Wooden told his audience, which included people watching a simulcast on First Coast News.

He said children are just as susceptible to the "assistance" lure, such as being asked to help an adult carry a package to a nearby car; and the "authority" lure, since they feel obligated to obey an adult who appears to be a public official. "Fake badges are popular with serial rapists and other sexual predators," Wooden said.

Wooden told his audience that the number of children who have been abducted, murdered or molested in the U.S. has risen from 41,950 in 1997 to 51,000, and that predators run the socioeconomic gamut – from blue collar workers to corporate CEOs, military members and high-ranking public officials. "The average molester will have 144 victims in his lifetime," Wooden said. "It’s a cancer and it’s growing."

Pam Bertwell, a single mother who lives near the Diena Thompson family, said she was "shocked" by some of what she learned. "But it was practical information for everybody, regardless of your age," she said. "I never thought that I could go to help someone and end up dead.

Sheriff Beseler said he was impressed with Wooden’s preparation but wasn’t really surprised because of his law enforcement experience. "I was sitting here playing back in my mind cases … where these lures were used," he said. "Those lures won’t change in 50 years."

School Superintendent Ben Wortham said he and school board members are "keenly aware" of the public’s heightened awareness of child sexual abuse because of the Thompson case, which drew national attention and united communities throughout Clay County. He said his district has worked with the Sheriff’s Office to make presentations at several schools, and that the district is doing everything it can despite some schools having to cut their "Stranger Danger" child safety programs due to lack of funding. "It’s a terrible excuse, but it always boils down to money," Wortham said.

Tim Hurse, whose wife, Kim, began a grassroots effort to bring Wooden to Orange Park, said he hopes the Child Lures and Teen Lures Prevention program will make its way into the school system "at some level." "I thought it was very, very worthwhile," he said.

Wooden is a member of Team Lures Prevention. More information about the team’s efforts can be found at www.avoidthecon.com, www.childluresprevention.com and www.teenluresprevention.com.

UPDATED: Jarred Harrell, the person of interest in Somer Thompson slaying, faces more child sex charges
Harrell, 24, is set to be arraigned on child *advertiser censored* charges in court Wednesday

Story updated at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, Mar. 9, 2010

An additional charge of child molestation and 12 counts of using a child in a sexual performance were filed today against Jarred Mitchell Harrell, the Clay County man also named as a person of interest in the Somer Thompson slaying, court records show.

The 13 new charges against Harrell, 24, were added to a case in which he was charged two weeks ago with molesting the same unidentified young girl and promoting a sexual performance involving the girl. There are now 26 counts against Harrell in that case, which investigators said did not involve Somer.

The case centers on accusations of molestation and graphic videotaping and photographing of a girl between the ages of 3 and 5 in a home once owned by Harrell's stepfather at 1152 Gano Ave. in Orange Park. The incidents occurred between May and November of 2008, records said. The images were found on a digital camera taken by investigators during a search of the Callahan home of Harrell's mother, records show.

That case was brought on top of 29 counts of child *advertiser censored* filed against Harrell Feb. 11. He was arrested in Meridian, Miss., on a warrant in the 29-count case, which stemmed from graphic images found by Harrell's former Orange Park roommates on his laptop and computer discs last summer.

Harrell is set to be arraigned in Clay County Circuit Court Wednesday. He is being represented by the public defender's office. Harrell has not responded to a Times-Union request for an interview.

Jarred Harrell Facing 13 New Charges
Man Named As Person Of Interest In Girl's Slaying To Be Arraigned Wednesday

Jarred Harrell, the man named as a person of interest in the Somer Thompson murder case, is facing 13 new charges the day before he is set to be arraigned. The state attorney's office said Tuesday the new charges are related to the same child victim, who may be as young as 3 years old, and the images and video that deputies said they found on Harrell's computer last month.

As a result of what else they've seen in those pictures and video, prosecutors said they are filing one new lewd molestation charge against Harrell and 12 new counts of using a child in a sexual performance. Prosecutors said the reason for the new charges is to "maximize the prosecution."

Harrell is accused of child molestation, production and possession of child *advertiser censored*. In total, Harrell is facing 55 charges. He is scheduled to be arraigned in court Wednesday morning, and he's currently being held without bond.

Sheriff Rick Beseler named Harrell a person of interest in the Oct. 19 disappearance and slaying of Somer Thompson, 7, whose death remains unsolved. The announcement came after Harrell's Feb. 11 arrest on the child-*advertiser censored* charges, but the sheriff has not said what evidence investigators have that may link him to the slaying. Somer disappeared while walking home from school on Gano Avenue, having last been seen near the Harrell family home. Investigators have also obtained DNA samples from Harrell and his father as part of the case, his father said. Harrell is being held in the isolation in the Clay County jail without bail.

Jarred Harrell, the man named as a person of interest in the Somer Thompson murder case, has pleaded not guilty to 55 charges involving possession and production of child *advertiser censored* and lewd molestation. Clay County prosecutor Steve Nelson said the new charges are related to the same child victim, a 3-year-old girl who Harrell's accused of molesting, and the child *advertiser censored* images and video that deputies said they found on Harrell's computer last month.

Deputies said the evidence comes from a memory card that was found on Harrell when he was arrested in Mississippi. They said images of the young girl were taken while Harrell was living at his parent's home on Gano Avenue, where Somer Thompson was last seen before she disappeared in October walking home from school.

In total, Harrell is facing 55 charges. He is currently being held without bond.

Harrell Appears In Court On Molestation Charges
Neighbors Of Somer Thompson Watch Case Closely

POSTED: 4:10 pm EST March 10, 2010
UPDATED: 4:53 pm EST March 10, 2010

The court appearance came one month after Jarred Harrell was arrested. Police said he took lewd pictures of a girl younger than 12 years old inside his bedroom. Harrell pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Harrell didn't say anything in court on Wednesday. He's faces 55 charges in connection with the case.

In the latest documents released, they indicate Harrell took pictures of a young girl around the same age as Somer Thompson in a bedroom in the home on Gano Avenue. That's not far from where Somer was last seen in October. In some of the pictures, authorities said Harrell's hands are visible.

Neighbors hope Harrell will soon no longer be person of interest in the slaying of Somer. They want him to become the primary suspect. "Knowing that 55 charges of child molestation and videos and things like that, it turns my stomach because I have young kids," neighbor Doug Cline said.

After Harrell's arraignment, he was returned back to his isolation cell. He remains jailed without bond and is already looking at a life sentence in prison.

A memorial remains near Somer Thompson's home.

The person of interest in the Somer Thompson murder case pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a slew of new charges unrelated to Thompson's death. A Jacksonville television station is reporting that Jarred Harrell is now officially facing 55 charges involving possession and production of child *advertiser censored* and lewd molestation.

Harrell pleads not guilty to child *advertiser censored*, molestation charges
Person of interest in Somer Thompson slaying received jail visit from mother, records show

Story updated at 5:24 PM on Wednesday, Mar. 10, 2010
<snipped>
Jarred Harrell pleaded not guilty Wednesday morning in Clay County court to 55 counts of child *advertiser censored*, including two counts of molesting a young girl. His next court appearance was set for April 8.

This morning's one-minute arraignment involved two separate cases in which Harrell is represented by the public defender's office. Assistant public defender Kate Bedell, who heads the agency's office in Clay County, stood next to Harrell and entered the not guilty pleas before Circuit Judge John Skinner.

Harrell, wearing a grey-and-white jail jumpsuit, shackles and handcuffs with a chain around his waist, said nothing before being returned to his isolation cell in the Clay County jail. He is being held without bail.

Clay County jail records released to The Times-Union today show that Harrell has had two sets of visitors: his public defenders and, last week, his mother, Annis Dailey. Those meetings were not recorded, authorities said. Dailey, in a phone call she had with her son when he was being held in Mississippi, spoke of providing him an alibi if he was ever charged in the Somer Thompson case. Dailey has not returned several Times-Union messages seeking comment.

Ann Dugger, executive director of the Justice Coalition victim's advocates group, appeared in court today on behalf of Somer's mother, Diena Thompson. After the appearance, Dugger called Thompson and softly spoke to her about the proceedings and what to expect next. Across the street, about a dozen motorcyclists and supporters of Somer's mother waved at cars in front of signs demanding "Justice for Somer."

"Do you hear all those horns blowing?" a smiling Dugger said into the phone.

UPDATED: Trash truck backup caused delay in Somer search
Backup of trash trucks, lack of space at a Clay waste station led to authorities’ decision.

Story updated at 7:34 AM on Thursday, Mar. 11, 2010
<snipped>
Somer Thompson’s body may have been found at a Clay County trash site rather than a Georgia landfill if not for a decision to end the local search primarily because of a backup of trash trucks, records and an interview with the county manager show.

An agreement by Alan Altman, Clay’s director of environmental services, and sheriff’s deputies combing the trash site on Oct. 20 ended the search, County Manager Fritz Behring said. That prevented an immediate opportunity to find the truck that picked up Somer’s body, learn the truck’s route and possibly narrow the location where she was killed and dumped.

Investigators later tried to identify the specific trash truck after Somer’s body was found Oct. 21, two days after she disappeared. The Sheriff’s Office said that search, which they called a potential key to helping solve the case, was complicated because the body had been mixed with tons of trash transferred from the Clay site to the Chesser Island Road landfill in Folkston, Ga. A further complication: Behring said there are no known records of which trash trucks were unloaded into which of the tractor-trailers that were hauled to Georgia the next day.

Trash is picked up daily from around the county and taken to the Rosemary Hill Solid Waste Management Facility, also known as a transfer station. The trash is normally dumped in a building, searched briefly for anything that’s not household debris and then loaded into large truck trailers. Those trailers are then hauled to Folkston.

Police have said they know which tractor-trailer drove Somer’s body to Georgia. Authorities have not said whether the smaller trash truck that first picked her up has been found, though investigators sought specific records two weeks ago for one of those trucks.

Somer, 7, disappeared while walking home from school on Oct. 19. Sheriff Rick Beseler credited a detective with coming to him early the next morning and suggesting that Dumpsters and trash trucks be searched for her body and items she was carrying.

Beseler assigned detectives to follow the trucks. The search at Rosemary Hill began about 9 a.m. on Oct. 20. Trash already transferred to Folkston was also searched. Altman met with a deputy assigned to the county’s solid waste division about 3 p.m. “to discuss how we could effectively process the rest of the trucks that were waiting on site to be dumped,” according to a sworn statement taken by the Sheriff’s Office.

Altman estimated it would be another 8 to 10 hours to search the 20 waiting loads and that the transfer building at Rosemary Hill was not big enough to hold them all at once.

The loads were dumped onto the floor of the building, picked up by a front end loader and transferred into nine trailers that were stored overnight at the facility. The trailers were then driven to the Georgia landfill Oct. 21. Somer’s body was found that afternoon.

Behring said Wednesday he believes Altman’s concerns about the backup and need for more space were legitimate. “I think he [Altman] made the best decision given the situation at the time,” Behring said. Altman declined to comment for this story. Beseler also declined to comment, saying he didn’t want to compromise the unsolved case. Diena Thompson, Somer’s mother, also declined to comment.

Johnny Davis, an Orange Park trash truck driver, said Wednesday he was in the long line of trucks waiting to dump at Rosemary Hill Oct. 20. Davis said trucks routinely come and go within minutes after dumping in a transfer building. He was told the backup was caused by authorities searching each load for evidence in Somer’s disappearance.

Davis, 59, said he saw a group of people, including some deputies, leave the building in the afternoon, shed their boots and drive off. Davis said he took that as a sign Somer had been found elsewhere. He said he was puzzled after later learning Somer hadn’t been found at that time.

“If they would have kept on searching they probably would have found her before they found her in Georgia,” Davis said.

Harrell's Ex-Stepdad Talks Somer Case
Joseph Newman Writes Letter To Channel 4 About Former Stepson

POSTED: Thursday, March 11, 2010
UPDATED: 4:00 pm EST March 11, 2010

Joseph Newman, who made headlines more than 20 years ago for marrying Jarred Harrell's mother and for marrying his 8-year-old sister, sent a one-page letter to Channel 4 talking about his former stepson and Somer Thompson.

In the letter Newman sent to Channel 4's Adam Landau in response, he said, "During the short time I was with Jarred, I found a child that was wanting love and guidance. I tried to give that to him." Newman also wrote, "I hope Jarred is not guilty of killing the sweet Somer girl. I personally would not have thought the Jarred I knew capable of doing such. I hope all involved will make absolute proof he is guilty before damning him."

The letter also addresses Harrell's mother's fight for custody. "I was in court in (Harrell's mother) Annis' behalf to keep Jarred's father from getting the children," Newman wrote. "While I was on the stand, God did such an astounding miracle that the judge dismissed the court. The attorney who was representing Jarred's father walked out of the court saying that he no longer represented him."

I saw Mr. Wooten years ago on Oprah, and bought a tape at that time, which I ended up giving to the school.

He has an amazing presentation, and I encourage everyone to get that tape.

I'd love to see a version made in a Sesame Street form, for younger kids.

While in the military, new parents had to attend education classes about their children at certain stages along the way of their development. It would be wonderful to have this system in the civilian world, along with this very important information Mr. Wooten has.

IMO, it's time we stop fearing the monsters that prey on our children...they should fear us.

Great work on behalf of the Clay County Sheriff's office and all involved in bringing Mr. Wooten and his information to the community.

Orange Park Resident Charles Watkins Faces Federal Charges

A man who lives near Somer Thompson's home has been arrested on federal child *advertiser censored* charges.

Charles Watkins, 64, was arraigned in U.S. District Court this morning on two counts of possession of child *advertiser censored*.

Police have said his arrest is in no way related to Somer Thompson's disappearance and murder. After 7-year-old Somer disappeared from the neighborhood near her Orange Park home last October, police searched the area for sex offenders and other related offenses. Watkins was interviewed as part of that search. His home is about a quarter of a mile from Somer's home.

Marcus Barnett, Watkins' attorney, said his client is innocent. He said Watkins was told by police that the abduction might be connected to child *advertiser censored*.

Barnett said Watkins went online to see if he could get more information on the investigation. "He went online and he would look at images."

But when he realized the images were not of Somer, he hit "click delete, click delete," Barnett said.

He was expected to be released on a $20,000 bond this afternoon.

The FBI handled the arrest, said U.S. Attorney's Office spokesman Steve Cole, but he would not comment on Watkins' defense that this was a misunderstanding. "We are simply saying (he was) indicted yesterday, arrested today," said Cole.

FBI arrests Orange Park man accused of having child *advertiser censored* on computer
Investigation began during Somer Thompson case, though no evidence man is connected to her slaying

The case against Charles Marvin Watkins, 64, began as police were investigating the Oct. 19 disappearance and slaying of Somer Thompson, said FBI spokesman Jeff Westcott. But Westcott said Watkins' arrest is not connected to that case.

Westcott said FBI agents were assisted in the arrest by the Clay County Sheriff's Office, the Florida Attorney General's Office and agents from federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

No arrests have been made in the slaying of Somer, 7. Jarred Harrell, named as a person of interest in the case, remains in jail on 55 counts of child molestation and child *advertiser censored* not related to Somer's death.

FBI makes child *advertiser censored* arrest near Somer's home

FBI agents have arrested a 64-year-old man who lives near the Somer Thompson family on child *advertiser censored* charges but say the man is not a suspect in the 7-year-old child’s abduction or murder.

Sixty-four-year-old Charles Watkins of 226 Chestnut Ct. was arrested without incident early Thursday, March 18, at his home, FBI Special Agent Jeff Westcott said. He said Watkins is charged with one count each of receiving and possessing child *advertiser censored*.

The charges are related to computer images, but Westcott declined to give further details.

He said the arrest follows a lengthy, multi-agency investigation that based on tips and other information that surfaced during an investigation into the murder of Somer, who was abducted on her way home from Grove Park Elementary school on Oct. 19. Her body was found two days later at a South Georgia landfill

A 64-year-old man known as "grandpa" in the Orange Park neighborhood where 7-year-old Somer Thompson was abducted and killed last October appeared in federal court Thursday on two counts involving child *advertiser censored*.

Clay County deputies said they came across pornographic images on Charlie Watkins' computer during the door-to-door search for Somer, but he is not facing any charges in connection with the girl's disappearance or slaying.

Although investigators said Watkins regularly invited children into his house to use his computer, there are no allegations of any inappropriate behavior with those children. They said Watkins was cooperative during the investigation and they do not believe he was involved in Somer's death.

Walker is charged with one count of receiving child *advertiser censored* and one count of possession child *advertiser censored* and faces 5 to 20 years in prison if convicted.

After a brief hearing on the *advertiser censored* charges, bond was set at $20,000. The judge stipulated that if released, Watkins have no contact with any children -- including his grandchildren -- and will not be allowed to use a computer.

If child *advertiser censored* is his bag and he was in the habit of inviting children in to use the computer, it was just a matter of time before a crime would occur. This is an important collar. Thank you for this information.

ITA Tuba,
I'm glad they also ordered him to stay away from his grandchildren, nephews, neices, etc as well. I hate to even think what may/might have happened to any of the children that would visit his home. :frown:

Sheriffs oppose budget cuts targeting GBI agents
Sunday, Mar. 21, 2010
<snipped>
When someone is murdered, a child is molested or public money goes missing, Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents are the first ones South Georgia sheriffs and prosecutors call for help.

"Those guys always come running when we need help," said Charlton County Sheriff Dobie Conner, who like other sheriffs in rural counties has limited manpower. "Whatever resources they have that we need, they make available to us. We can't afford to lose them and their support," Conner said.

But lose them they may.

A proposal to cut or eliminate outright the GBI's investigative division surfaced recently in the General Assembly as lawmakers struggle with Georgia's budget deficit. Three of the GBI's regional crime laboratories already are being closed as a cost-cutting measure. Such cuts are "a big mistake," Conner said.

Prosecutors agree. Eliminating the GBI agents "would be devastating to me, my office, my community and my circuit," said District Attorney Rick Currie of the six-county Waycross Judicial Circuit.

Currie also worries he will see an increase in crime as state inmates are released early in response to make room in prisons for more serious offenders. At the same time, the state is closing prisons and probation detention centers.

When 7-year-old Somer Thompson's body was discovered at a Charlton County landfill on Oct. 21, GBI agents helped comb through the garbage in search of evidence.

Agents assigned to the GBI's Douglas office also remain busy. It has nine agents including two supervisors, a crime scene technician and a computer forensic specialist. They cover 11 counties: Appling, Atkinson, Bacon, Berrien, Clinch, Coffee, Cook, Jeff Davis, Lanier, Pierce and Ware, also divided among three judicial circuits.

They have opened 212 cases so far this fiscal year, which is about 77 percent of the 277 cases they opened the previous year, said Russell Mansfield, special agent in charge of the GBI's Douglas region. "It hasn't slowed down any," Mansfield said.

Conner said Charlton County cant afford to replace the GBIs services. "We're a small county, and money is very tight. If we lose the support of these agents, we're going to have to pay for the services ourselves. And, we don't have that kind of money. We need them," Conner said.

My understanding (which may be incorrect) is that there never was a second party to this case, or a woman (Moon) mentioned in the event charts originally, that was involved?

It was simply this 24 year old guy who was arrested for her murder, a pedophile?

Does anyone know where he was born?

I have the following:

Pascagoula Mississippi.....

thanks,

Leomoon

There is a woman, his female relative who silently housed him until the police seized him. She disbelieved he could be responsible for the *advertiser censored* or for anything evil. We don't know much yet about what happened or whether he is Somer's killer but the Moon in Scorpio was in House 9 and he was about to travel, as soon as he could get on the road. This woman obviously gave him safe harbour. The Moon in Scorpio never looked like being a participant, in fact it was said that she was NOT there.

JH was born 7-24-1985, Lucedale, MS (per his aunt).

I assigned a 6:10:54 am (+5:00 CDT) time of birth which puts SUN exactly on the ASCENDANT.

There were several suspicious interconnections amongst his sunrise natal, secondary progressed, Somer's (sunrise) natal and secondary progressed, and the Last Seen.

Thanks,
Soulscape

Both Jarred Harrell & Chas. Watkins were arrested for *advertiser censored* & in Harrell's case, molestation as well. As far as I know neither was arrested for murder. Harrell does connect to the victim Somer and we suspect him. Law enforcement has made clear that her murder was an atrocity and also that they have their eye on a group in seeking the killer. The group could be associates of the family, could be bikers, could be *advertiser censored* pedophiles but some distinct group. More information would be a relief but especially to those living in Orange Park.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement continues to work the Jarred Harrell case.

Dominick Pape with the FDLE says every computer that they believe he's ever used is viewed as possible evidence. "To do a good forensic examination takes a lot of time," said Pape

He's due in court for pre-trial motions next month.

also the florida times union is reporting that Harrell was charged with premeditated murder yesterday!

Jarred Harrell, named a person of interest in the 2009 death of 7-year-old Somer Thompson of Orange Park, has been charged with premeditated murder.

Harrell, 24, already in the Clay County Jail on child *advertiser censored* charges, was arrested anew Thursday. He was also charged with sexual battery on a victim under 12 and lewd and lascivious battery, according to a Sheriff's Office listing released early today of Thursday arrests.

The listing did not say who Harrell was accused of killing, but the Sheriff's Office said in a news release early this morning that it would announce a "major development" at noon about the Somer Thompson case.

Harrell will have his first court appearance on the new charges tomorrow morning.
