Person of Interest in Somer Thompson Case
Person of Interest Jarred Harrell, 24, Arrested on 29 Child *advertiser censored* Charges, Lived Near Thompson

<snipped>
Police have arrested a former neighbor of Somer Thompson, the 7-year old girl whose body was found in landfill last fall, and named him a person of interest in the girl's disappearance and murder, investigators said today.

Diena Thompson's Advice for Parents
It is a struggle to balance that anger with a mother's need to stay strong for her remaining children. Thompson said the ordeal has been especially hard on Somer's twin, Samuel. They used to play in the pool together and race each other to see who could stay underwater the longest.

"We used to nickname her 'Grace' because she couldn't really walk and chew bubblegum at the same time," Thompson said of Somer. She loved to dance, but she had no rhythm, Thompson said.

"She was just so wonderful. And you take it for granted. You never think you're gonna be sitting here," Thompson said. "And you have a lot of regret because you may have been too busy. And you weren't really busy. You were just too busy in your head. And I'll have to live with that, and that's hard."

She said she would tell other parents to be sure and tell their children they love them every day. "It don't take but a couple seconds. And when you think you're too busy, really think about what you're saying you're too busy for. Because you don't want to live with this. That's what I regret. It's hard to live with regret and guilt," she said.

Diena understands acutely that the world's attention will move on. The flowers in her home are beginning to fade. The vigils that used to occur nightly have grown more infrequent.

But she is determined to continue the fight for justice. "I know I'm not gonna let this monster win. I will be victorious in the end, and he will pay," she said. "We're gonna get him, and he will pay. And I hope he's scared."

Sheriff names child *advertiser censored* suspect a person of interest in Somer Thompson slaying
Family friends of the former Clay man said they are sickened by the news.
Story updated at 1:58 AM on Friday, Feb. 12, 2010
<snipped>
A Middleburg woman whose daughter was a one-time roommate of Harrell and who said she has known him and his family for years described him as a recluse who enjoyed playing computer games.

Lisa Buchanan said Harrell spent at least some time alone in his mother’s home at 1152 Gano Ave. at the time of Somer’s disappearance.

She said her daughter then found child *advertiser censored*, with girls as young as 6, on a computer and computer discs Harrell left behind. Harrell’s arrest docket provides graphic details of those images and movies. Buchanan and her 46-year-old husband, Rod, said they went with their daughter to turn over the materials to police in August. Those materials were in turn given to the state attorney general’s Cyber Crimes Unit. Processing was not finished until after Somer’s death, authorities said.

The Buchanans said they spotted Harrell’s vehicle outside his mother’s home a few days after Somer’s body was found and alerted police to their concerns about him. The couple said Harrell’s mother and stepfather moved out of the home about two weeks before Somer’s disappearance.

The couple also said police became extremely interested after learning Harrell had been spending time at his parents’ otherwise vacant home. After learning of Harrell’s arrest and possible link in Somer’s case, the Buchanans said they were stunned.

It’s unclear when Harrell became a person of interest in Somer’s slaying. Police have said they recently have been receiving a steady stream of laboratory tests of DNA and other evidence collected from where her body was found in a Folkston landfill. Beseler declined to comment Thursday on what links investigators may have between Harrell and Somer.

Records obtained by The Times-Union show the listed property owner, General L. Dailey — Harrell’s stepfather — moved out of the home late last year. Dailey, 66, owned the single-story brick house since 1996, according to Clay County property appraiser records. Neighbors said they knew little about those who lived in the home.

Somer Thompson: Person of interest arrested
Last Update: 2/11 11:54 pm

Clay County Sheriff's Office Statement
I have a short announcement to make and afterwards I will not be taking any questions:

Members of the media have been inquiring about police activity on Gano Ave. today involving a search of a residence there. Additionally, other residences in Callahan, FL and Lauderdale County, Mississippi and a vehicle were searched in connection with this investigation.

Earlier today a search warrant was executed at a residence at 1152 Gano Ave. Investigators from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI and FDLE conducted a search for evidence in which a suspect has been arrested for 29 counts of possession of child *advertiser censored* that occurred in Clay County recently. The suspect is identified as Jarred Harrell, 24 years of age, who formerly resided at the residence on Gano Ave.

We are also naming Harrell as a person of interest in connection with the abduction and murder of Somer Thompson. Harrell was arrested today on child *advertiser censored* charges by federal agents in Meridian, Mississippi without incident and is being held on a 1 million dollar bond on those charges.

I cannot comment further about how Harrell may be connected to the Thompson case as that would require I comment on evidence in an ongoing investigation. Throughout this entire investigation we have been very careful to protect the integrity of our investigation by not releasing details that could be detrimental to the successful outcome or prosecution of the person responsible for this crime.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Sheriff still not connecting arrest to Somer Thompson Case
Last Update: 2/11 11:56 pm

Somer Thompson's family is still waiting for justice. Now for the first time in months, the Sheriff is talking about a possible person of interest in the case. "A suspect has been arrested, and charged with 29 counts of child *advertiser censored*," said Sheriff Rick Beasler.

But the sheriff is still very tight-lipped on how harrell is connected Somer's murder. "That would require I discuss evidence in an ongoing investigation," said the Sheriff.

Sheriff Beasler says he won't do that. "We have been careful to protect the integrity of the investigation by not releasing details that could be detrimental to the successful outcome of the investigation or prosecution of the person responsible for this crime."

Harrell's family friends suspect him in Somer's murder

Rod and Lisa Buchanan are family friends with Jarred Harrell. Their Daughter and her fiance lived with Harrell in the Summer of 2009 in an apartment off the 2000 block of Wells. Rd in Orange Park.

When the roommates suspected Harrell had child *advertiser censored* on his computer, they took a closer look at the computer. "She called me at work crying and was sick to her stomach," said Lisa Buchanan about the day in August when her daughter called and told her about what she found on the computer. Buchanan says her daughter and her fiance turned the computer over to police.

Police say Harrell's computer contained pictures and videos of child *advertiser censored*. Some of the pictures, according to police, were on a CD labeled "Don't lose music."

In October, when 7-year-old Somer Thompson disappeared and was found dead, the Buchanans suspected Harrell right away. "You just get that sick instinct in your gut," said Lisa Buchanan.

The Middleburg couple has little doubt that Harrell is Somer's killer. "My gut instinct is yes," said Lisa Buchanan

According to arresting documents, a cluster of child *advertiser censored* images and video was found on several CDs and a computer Harrell used when he lived with roommates at a home in Orange Park, Fla, in August. The computer, which had a filed called "Toddler Insertion," held "a large amount of child erotica and also child *advertiser censored*," documents said.

The roommates, who discovered the files, turned the computer over to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office on Aug. 10, two months before Thompson disappeared.

FBI agents spent hours Thursday, emptying out the home on Gano Avenue where police say Jarred Harrell used to live.

Agents spent hours collecting and cataloging anything that could be considered evidence.

The search of the home on Gano Avenue wrapped up around 11pm Thursday. No word on exactly they found.

GMA~Exclusive: Diena Thompson, Mother of Murdered Somer Thompson: 'I Want [Killer] to Die'
Mother's Heartbreaking Call for Answers Came Days Before Person of Interest Named in Child's Murder
Feb. 12, 2010
<snipped>
"Why? Give me your best excuse, your best reason as to why you had to do this," Thompson told ABC News in an exclusive interview that aired today on "Good Morning America." "I want them to die. I want them to get the death penalty. I have to be the voice for Somer."

The emotional interview took place just days before police named a former neighbor of the Thompson's a person of interest in the girl's death on Thursday. Jarred Harrell, 24, was arrested on 29 unrelated charges of possession of child *advertiser censored*.

Thompson, however, is determined to find her daughter's killer and said she can't wait to meet him or her face to face. "I feel like it'll give me some more closure because I still blame myself, you know? What if I did this?" she said. "And instead of looking in the mirror and blaming myself, I'm going to have a picture of someone else to blame. I want to see this person's face. I can't wait to meet him face to face."

Thompson said she wants to know everything about how her daughter died. "I was there when she was born and I should know, how she left," she said. "Because I've built up so many scenarios in my head, that I honestly don't feel like anything they could tell me could be any worse than what I've already made up in my head."

Man Arrested in Somer Thompson Case
7-Year-Old Florida Girl's Body Found in Landfill; Jarred Mitchell Harrell Called Person of Interest
ORANGE PARK, Fla., Feb. 12, 2010
<snipped>
Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said Jarred Mitchell Harrell, 24, who had lived in the girl's neighborhood was arrested in Mississippi Thursday on 29 charges of possession of child *advertiser censored*. Harrell has not been charged in the death of 7-year-old Somer Thompson. The arrest warrant said he was being held on $1 million bond. Officials at the Lauderdale County Detention Facility in Mississippi said they didn't know if he has a lawyer.

Harrell, who was arrested in Meridian, Miss., had lived until recently in a home near Somer Thompson's. Authorities searched that house Thursday. Deputies and an FBI forensics team were seen searching its front yard with rakes and shovels. The sheriff's office restricted access to at least a block around the home, which is in a neighborhood filled with tidy, ranch-style houses.

Dawn Nuss, 39, whose 8-year-old daughter Christina used to walk home with Somer, said her daughter told her that Somer used to stop at the house and pet a white dog. No one would ever come out of the house. Sometimes Somer would run ahead of the children walking home and hide in a ditch.

After the news conference, Thompson's attorney, Michael R. Freed, released a statement that said Thompson and her family are "monitoring the latest developments in the investigation." The statement said that she was not prepared to speak publicly about the case Thursday.

Search For Somer's Killer Leads To Mississippi
Person Of Interest Arrested; Vacant Orange Park Home Searched

POSTED: Friday, February 12, 2010
UPDATED: 9:57 am EST February 12, 2010
<snipped>
Beseler said Jarred Harrell has been charged with 29 counts of possession of child *advertiser censored* that occurred in Clay County, and he was arrested Thursday by federal agents in Meridian, Miss., and is being held on $1 million bond. On Thursday afternoon, a search warrant was issued on a vacant house in the 1100 block of Gano Avenue near where Somer was last seen before she disappeared and was found killed in October. The 7-year-old's body was discovered three days later at a Georgia landfill. Beseler said Harrell previously lived at the home.

Beseler said other residences in Callahan and Lauderdale County, Miss., and a vehicle have also been searched in connection with the case.

According to documents released by the Clay County Sheriff's Office, Harrell possessed child *advertiser censored* on his computer at a Wells Road apartment complex. Harrell was asked to move out of his residence in August after his roommates found out that he stole from them, according to an arrest warrant. He left the residence, leaving his computer and a box of CDs behind, according to the warrant. Authorities said Harrell moved into the home on Gano Avenue between that time and December, when neighbors said he moved out. According to the arrest warrant, the computer was processed by the attorney general's office, and that's when five movies and 24 child pornographic images were found showing children as old as 10 and 13 years old.

Snow hampering Harrell's first appearance
Last Update: 10:28 am
<snipped>
Its snowing hard here in Meridian, Mississippi. That snow is preventing Jarred Harrell from making his first appearance at the Lauderdale County Courthouse. Most employees can't get to work.

That means Jarred Harrell may not appear before a judge until Tuesday. Monday is Presidents Day. I spoke with Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie and he tells me Harrell could sign paperwork to be extradited back to Clay County without appearing before a judge.

Last night, photojournalist Jamey Cicalese and I drove nine hours from Jacksonville to learn more about Harrell. We've been in Meridian and for a few hours now. The snow keeps falling steadily.

We'll keep you posted on what we learn in Meridian.

Harrell aunt calls him "sweet dough boy"

My photojournalist and I just left the house Harrell was staying at in Meridian. He was staying with his Aunt, Kriss Mizelle. Mizelle's house was searched by the FBI Thursday afternoon and the computers were taken.

Mizelle tells me Harrell was visiting her last week. She said he enjoyed Meridian and started looking for a job.

She says Harrell was just a "big dough boy" and a good guy. She doesn't believe he had child *advertiser censored* or has anything to do with Somer Thompson's death. "He wasn't hiding. He wasn't acting strange," Mizelle told me.

Mizelle is upset because she says people are jumping to conclusions about her nephew. "He's not a freak," she told me.

Neighbor describes Harrell's FBI arrest
Feb 12 - 11:02 am
Right now I'm at Alma Bonner's house in Meridian. She lives across the street from where Jarred Harrell lived.

The 73-year-old baby sat her great grandchildren at her house this week and was shocked to learn Harrell is a person of interest in Somer Thompson's murder. Bonner says around 3:00 Thursday she saw about 20 law enforcement cars and dozens of people at the house.

Bonner told us she didn't know Harrell. She says she only saw his car at the house a few days.

Neighbors: 'He Only Came Out When the Kids Came Out of School'

Directly across the street from the home FBI agents searched Thursday, a "for sale" sign points to frustration. "I moved out of here because of this," says neighbor Sandra Russell. Russell and her sister Connie Torres are moving out because they say Jarred Harrell freaked them out. "I knew he had a few loose screws that needed tightening up," Russell told First Coast News' Erich Spivey. "I watched that house constantly because something just told me there's something not right with it," Torres said.

The sisters started moving out weeks ago, and were greeted Friday with the stunning news. "I was devastated. I freaked out. All my friends started calling me. This is your neighbor.

He would sit outside about the time the kids would come home and he would wash his car," Russell said.
Added Torres: "He only came out when the kids came out of school."

Blog: On The Trail Of Jarred Harrell
Channel 4 Reporter Jennifer Bauer's Blog From Mississippi

POSTED: Friday, February 12, 2010
UPDATED: 11:14 am EST February 12, 2010

Channel 4 reporter Jennifer Bauer and photojournalist Matt James traveled to Lauderdale County, Miss., where the man named a person of interest in the abduction and killing of Somer Thompson is in jail on child *advertiser censored* charges.

She is sending periodic updates from the place where Jarred Harrell moved sometime after leaving the home on Gano Avenue in Orange Park that the FBI and other authorities searched for evidence Thursday afternoon and evening. Bauer is sending blog posts throughout the day on what she has learned about Harrell's life there and if and when he will appear in court on the charges. Her most recent posts will be first.

Full report on the local station at 5 & 6 pm

Friday, 10:15 a.m.:
Went to the house where Harrell lived in Meridian and talked with a woman who identified herself as his aunt. She said, "I don't believe a thing that they are saying about him. He is not a monster." Watch my interview with her on the news at noon.
Friday, 8:44 a.m.:
I just had a cup of coffee with the sheriff (yes, this town is as small as you'd imagine). He says Harrell is in his jail, but like we've been reporting all day, the courts are closed down. If he goes before a judge, the sheriff is going to call me so we can get the perp walk.

Sheriff tells me it won't exactly be a "first appearance" but more of a hearing to see what's going to happen to him. He'll likely be taken to Orange Park and may make is official "first appearance" there since it's their warrant. Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler will have those answers.

In the meantime, we're going to drive around town and find where this guy lived, worked etc....

Friday, 7:32 a.m.:
Snow!!! The town is shut down. According to the radio reports they're expecting 5-7 inches.

Diena Thompson has been waiting for closure since daughter Somer vanished in October. Her body was found two days later in a Georgia landfill. He has not been charged in Somer's death, and Diena Thompson's attorney, Michael Freed, said his client is trying not to get her hopes up about the latest development.

"This has been an emotional roller coaster for her," Freed said. "We want to make sure the ride comes to an end before she reacts."

Beseler released a statement that provided few details about the case and did not indicate what evidence makes Harrell a person of interest. "You just get this feeling that he's a very strange guy. He was not playing with a full deck. He's about four cans short of a six-pack," a neighbor said.

Jarred Harrell will have to spend a long weekend in jail.

"I'm very upset that bad people are in a good town," said Lauderdale County (Miss.) Sheriff Billy Sollie. Sollie added that the sheriff's department wasn't heavily involved in the case; they got a call from the FBI to arrest Harrell, and they did so.

Harrell's first appearance was scheduled for this morning, but severe winter weather in central Mississippi forced a delay. Also, Monday is a federal holiday (President's Day), so court is not in session again until Tuesday.

"We took it to JSO thinking that that's where we needed to take it. And once we handed it over to JSO, they handed it over to Clay County," Buchanan said.

JSO released a statement Friday regarding the computer that was turned in on Aug. 10, saying: "The witness claimed it contained pornographic materials involving children. A sex crimes detective interviewed the witness. The detective determined that the residence where the computer was located is outside of JSO’s jurisdiction. The witness was advised of this, and the detective notified the appropriate law enforcement agencies, Orange Park Police and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. The computer was placed into evidence at JSO, and retrieved by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, August 13, 2009."

Buchanan said he was shocked to learn that Harrell's parents had moved out two weeks before Somer Thompson was reported missing, but Harrell still lived at the home.

Buchanan and his wife decided to go by that house. "And when we drove by, his vehicle was in the driveway, and it was right across the street from the athletic field, right where she (Somer) had to walk every day," Buchanan said.

After that, Buchanan said he went to a Clay County detective and let him know that Harrell was living in that house on Gano. Buchanan said he also told the detective about the *advertiser censored* that they had found a few months earlier and turned in to police.

CCSO Releases Statement about Efforts to Solve Somer's Case

<snipped>
With questions still looming about Jarred Harrell's involvement in Somer Thompson's death, the Clay County Sheriff's Office has released a statement about its efforts to solve this case. Several questions have been asked about the timing of Harrell's arrest on child *advertiser censored* charges and could he have been arrested before Somer's murder.

From Beseler's response:

Some disturbing commentary has been brought to our attention regarding the timing of the arrest of Jarred Harrell on child *advertiser censored* charges, namely, the inference that the Clay County Sheriff's Office could have somehow arrested this *advertiser censored* suspect (Harrell) before the tragic death of Somer Thompson. As we have said all along, we must protect the integrity of our investigation..so not every detail is releasable and not every question can be answered at this time...

An investigation into any allegation of child *advertiser censored* possession involves far more than simply establishing that a computer contains the illegal photos or movies...To infer that the Harrell child *advertiser censored* investigation somehow languished is unfair and inaccurate.

Former FBI Agent looks inside Somer investigation
Last Update: 4:48 pm
<snipped>
As an FBI agent Dale Carson spent his career tracking criminals. Now as an attorney he works the criminal law system.

And he admits he was surprised how long it took investigators to arrest Jarred Harrell, even though his former roommates had turned over his computer, that allegedly had child *advertiser censored* on it, back in August. "In this case I think they would've gone out of their way to locate him."

But Carson says to make an arrest and get a warrant to search Harrell's Gano home they needed to build a case against him. And prove the computer belonged to him. "If you step back as an investigator and intellectually look at this and do it the right way you're more subject to win a case when it does come to trial. And you're likely to identify who is actually involved."

And he says Thursday's search and arrest may have been the result of a lot of behind the scenes work. "They could have been surveilling him for a period of time. We just don't know that yet."

The father of a murdered 7-year-old responded to news that authorities arrested a person of interest in her death Thursday.

Sam Thompson spoke to FOX8 Friday, a day after authorities in Mississippi arrested a man they are calling a person of interest in the kidnapping and killing of 7-year-old Somer Thompson. Sam Thompson, who lives in Graham, talked about how difficult it would be to face the man authorities are calling a person of interest.

Clay sheriff defends lengthy procedure to arrest child-*advertiser censored* suspect
Story updated at 6:53 PM on Friday, Feb. 12, 2010
<snipped>
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was given a computer loaded with child *advertiser censored* and a suspect in August, nearly two months before getting a warrant for a full forensic analysis from state experts. By the time results were back, Orange Park first-grader Somer Thompson went missing and was then found dead in a Georgia landfill. That computer belonged to Jarred Mitchell Harrell.

Beseler told The Times-Union his detective was working on the Harrell case “almost every day” but said he could not get into specific details. “The perception that this case was just put off is inaccurate and incorrect,” Beseler said. Beseler said his deputies have to verify possession of the pornographic material by analyzing download times and bank transactions to determine who the videos and pictures belong to.

Clay deputies received Harrell’s computer Aug. 13 after former roommates found child *advertiser censored* on the hard drive and several discs Harrell left behind after being kicked out that month.

Eleven days after they got the computer, Clay deputies had Harrell pulled over for not wearing a seat belt. “There’s no way we could have arrested him based on what we had,” Beseler said.

It would be another month — Sept. 25 — before the computer would be given to the state attorney general’s Child Predator CyberCrime Unit. “It sounds like a long time for it to be turned over to the state,” said Jeffrey Ian Ross, a criminologist at the University of Baltimore who has been studying law-enforcement practices for more than two decades. Nothing was done with the computer for two more weeks while the state waited on a warrant, Attorney General’s Office spokeswoman Sandi Copes said.

The state started a forensic search of the computer Oct. 9. “At that point, this was a routine case,” Beseler said. Ten days later, Somer disappeared. “At no time was this request prioritized by Clay County, nor did we have any indication that computer was connected to the Somer Thompson case,” Copes said. The results of the computer search came back Nov. 12. It generally takes between 30 and 45 days to get the results, Copes said, but if a city or county says they are urgent, they can be turned around in a week.

In fact, five days after Somer disappeared, Clay authorities sent a computer to the state CyberCrime unit and asked for results to be rushed, Copes said. The results were back within a week, she said. Copes said she could neither confirm nor deny if the second computer was sent because of a connection to Somer’s death, and Beseler said he did not know what case it was for.

Neighbors Making Noise

Neighbors can't believe the man police are calling a "person of interest" in the Somer Thompson murder investigation lived right next door.

"I used to see Somer come across the street here, and she and her family would wave at me and say hello. And it just freaked me out when all this happened. And then y'all put the guy on tv! It blew my mind!" said neighbor Sandra Russell.

Police say Jarred Harrell lived in a house on Gano Avenue. They say he was busted for having sexually explicit photos of young girls on his computer.

Neighbor Connie Torres said, "I noticed he would only come out and smoke cigarettes when the kids were out of school. He'd stay in the whole day. He wouldn't come out."

The house is only about a quarter mile from Grove Park Elementary School. Dozens of children walk past there every day. Back in October, Somer was one of them.

Jarred Harrell's Aunt: Officials are Questioning the Wrong Man
Created: 2/12/2010 6:50:22 PM
Updated: 2/12/2010 11:40:38 PM
<snipped>
In an interview at her Meridian home, Kriss Mizelle, Jarred Harrell's aunt, told First Coast News Harrell is a gentle young man who "couldn't hurt a flea." However, locals in the small town are talking about two things: the arrest of Jarred Harrell and the snowfall.

Mizelle said the family has been inundated with questions. "It looked like a bee's nest around here. It was the very furthest thing from my mind that my nephew was in any kind of trouble," said Mizelle.

She said she understands the fear in Jacksonville and the need for answers in the tragic disappearance and murder of Somer Thompson. But Mizelle said officials are questioning the wrong man. "Anybody can take a mug shot and sling it up on a television set. This man was arrested for this, this man is suspected of this, this man was living here. Well, so were countless other people."

Mizelle said the reason for Harrell's arrest is shocking, but said others had access to her nephew's computer. Regardless, she said he is no killer. "I do not believe with all of my heart. I do not believe it was my nephew. At all, I just do not."

Mizelle said she is speaking out because Harrell's immediate family is shell shocked by all the media attention. She said they are afraid whatever they say will be twisted.

Harrell is originally from Lucedale, Miss. but lived in Meridian. He was homeschooled before moving to Florida. Police say he lived in a home on Gano Ave., which was just one block west from where Somer Thompson disappeared. His family said Harrell just moved back to Mississippi a few weeks ago.

Jarred Harrell's Computer Processing Timeline

<snipped>
Roommates turned over Jarred Harrell's computer to police more than two months before Somer Thompson's murder.

So why did it take so long to arrest him? The answer is simple, proving it was his computer and he knew what was on the computer takes a long time.

Harrell's roommates say they found child *advertiser censored* on his computer, in their Wells Road apartment, in August 2009. The roommates then gave the computer to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office on Aug. 10.

JSO determined the case was out of their jurisdiction, so the computer was turned over to the Clay County Sheriff's Office on Aug. 13. According to the State Attorney General's office, Harrell's computer arrived at their cyber crime unit on Sept. 25, 2009.

The unit wasn't able to start taking the computer apart to do forensic testing until Oct. 9, when an official search warrant was received.

The testing was completed on Nov. 10, nearly a month after Somer was killed. The official report, deeming that what was found on Harrell's computer was child *advertiser censored*, was sent to the Clay County Sheriff's Office two days later, Nov. 12.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office said the detective assigned to the child *advertiser censored* case worked on the case every single day before the computer was sent to the AG's office. The AG's office said forensic cases normally taken three to six months to handle. Harrell's was done in one month's time.

Somer disappeared on her walk home from Grove Park Elementary Oct. 19.

Neighbors Say Callahan Home Searched in Connection to Jarred Harrell

A home in Callahan was searched in connection with the Somer Thompson case. It's unclear who lives in the home, but First Coast News has learned it's one of Jarred Harrell's relatives, though police have not confirmed that.

Police were at the home for hours on Thursday, according to neighbors. Neighbors said the home was searched by the FBI and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in connection to the Somer Thompson case, and newly-named person of interest Harrell. Neighbor David Current said he saw police cars and an FDLE crime lab truck, but had no idea what was going on.

Current said the home in a rental and the family living there just moved in a couple of months ago. "These are new neighbors renting from a woman. I haven't spoken with them," said Current.

Today, there was no sign left behind that police were even there. Neighbors said they don't recall seing Harrell hanging around.

Mom Called for Answers Days Before Person of Interest Named in Child's Murder

The emotional interview took place just days before police named a former neighbor of the Thompsons as a person of interest in the girl's death on Thursday. Jarred Harrell, 24, was arrested on 29 unrelated charges of possession of child *advertiser censored*.

"We are also naming Harrell a person of interest in connection with the abduction and murder of Somer Thompson," Florida's Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said Thursday.

Harrell lived on the street near where Somer was last seen Oct. 19, 2009. He was under surveillance for some time, police said. Neighbors described Harrell as antisocial and withdrawn, and said they saw Somer occasionally stop to pet a little white dog near his former home.

After his arrest Thursday, authorities searched the new home of Harrell's family, particularly a shed.

The term "person of interest" has no legal ramifications and police have not named Harrell as a suspect. The $1 million bond set for Harrell likely was because of the number of counts filed. Despite a statewide search, Diena Thompson knew that day that she would never see her daughter again. "I can't explain it, but I just knew that she was gone," she said.

Ex-stepfather says Harrell possessed child *advertiser censored* as teen
Former Orange Park resident linked to Somer Thompson’s slaying.

Story updated at 2:03 AM on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010
<snipped>
Jarred Harrell’s lust for child *advertiser censored* began as a teenager in Mississippi, said a stepfather who did nothing after finding a disc of graphic material Harrell locked in a tackle box. After being told Friday of Harrell’s arrest on child *advertiser censored* charges and being linked to Somer Thompson’s slaying, Richard Wharton said he felt ashamed he didn’t act on his find eight years earlier. “I’m not proud of what I did,” said Wharton, 65, who was married to Harrell’s mother for 15 years before divorcing in 2005.

Wharton said he married Harrell’s mother, Annis, when Harrell was 5 years old and the two were living in Lucedale, a small town in southeastern Mississippi. Harrell struggled with the pressures of grade school and had to be home-schooled for several years, Wharton said in a telephone interview from his home in Alabaster, Ala.

Harrell got caught stealing when he was 13, but was otherwise a quiet, church-going teen who enjoyed being with friends, Wharton said.

Three years later, Wharton learned his 16-year-old stepson had another interest.

Wharton said he was curious about what Harrell kept in a locked tackle box in his bedroom closet, so one day he took off the hinges and pulled out one of several discs. He loaded the disc onto a computer and found pornographic images of young girls, some no older than 5 or 6. They were the same ages of some of the girls found on the Clay County discs, the arrest warrant said.

Wharton said he asked Harrell’s mother whether she thought the teen had a problem with *advertiser censored* and she said no. Wharton said he didn’t tell her about his find and put the discs back in the box, assuming it was a passing phase. “I thought it was an age thing,” Wharton said.

Wharton said he never found his stepson with pornographic material again. He said Harrell got into more minor trouble by shoplifting in his late teens, but otherwise stayed out of trouble. “He’s never been a violent kid,” Wharton said.

Wharton, who last spoke to Harrell just after divorcing his mother in 2005, said he was disturbed by the new child *advertiser censored* charges because of his stepson’s past. But he said he doesn’t believe Harrell had anything to do with Somer’s death. “I have a hard time with the murder thing,” Wharton said.

Messages left by the Times-Union with Harrell’s mother on her cell phone and Facebook page and his current stepfather’s cell phone were not returned. Sheriff Billy Sollie, who supervises the Meridian jail where Harrell is being held, declined a request by the Times-Union to interview Harrell.

Harrell’s aunt, Kriss Mizelle, told the Meridian (Miss.) Star Friday that Harrell had been living with her for about 2 1/2 weeks before his arrest. Mizelle said he was looking for work and not trying to hide from police. Authorities seized Harrell’s computer and his aunt’s computer during the arrest in the town of about 40,000 people in eastern Mississippi. She described him as a “normal, lazy guy” incapable of what he’s charged with or linked to. “This just blows my mind,” said Mizelle.

Harrell, who studied computers while attending a Mississippi junior college, was turned down for an information technology job by Jacksonville City Hall in 2006 after someone more qualified was hired, city spokeswoman Misty Skipper said.

Harrell’s resume submitted to the city lists jobs as a salesman, pizza delivery man and cashier in Mississippi from 2001 to 2005. As for his criminal background, Florida records show one arrest in 2007 for possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana in Jacksonville. He has no arrests in Mississippi.

Major arrest in Meridian
Man may be connected to Florida murder
February 12, 2010
<snipped>
Jarred Mitchell Harrell, 24, was taken into custody by FBI agents Thursday afternoon in Meridian and charged with 29 counts of possession of child *advertiser censored*. According to the affidavit for his arrest from the Clay County Sheriff's Office, multiple items of child *advertiser censored* — including graphic photos and videos of children between the ages of 6-13 — were discovered on his computer after a search of his former home in Orange Park, Fla., in August of 2009.

Harrell had lived until recently in a home near Somer Thompson's. Authorities searched that house Thursday in Florida. Deputies and an FBI forensics team were seen searching its front yard with rakes and shovels. The sheriff's office restricted access to at least a block around the home, which is in a neighborhood filled with tidy, ranch-style houses.

Beseler, who announced the arrest during an evening news conference, said a vehicle had also been searched.

In Meridian Thursday, FBI agents swarmed the large country tin-roof home, moving on and off of the spacious covered front porch. The agents didn't appear to take anything from the home but did spend more than an hour searching. The home is located on the north end of 22nd Avenue Heights, which winds around and up the hill in the south part of Meridian's city limits behind the Cefco gas station.

Some neighbors, who refused to give their names, said they'd seen Harrell in recent days, but they believed in lived in one of the small rental cottages that are located behind the large home.

Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department officials said they had little to do with Thursday's arrest, other than transport Harrell from the federal building to the Lauderdale County Detention Facility.

Aunt says Harrell ‘isn't a monster’

Kriss Mizelle said she's been experiencing anxiety attacks since she came home Thursday to the big white house she shares with her friend Larenda Mingledorff and found federal agents inside.

Those agents said her nephew, Jarred Mitchell Harrell, had been arrested on 29 counts of possession of child *advertiser censored*. Mizelle only found out later that her 24-year-old nephew was being held in connection with the kidnapping and death of 7-year-old Somer Thompson of Orange Park, Fla., in October of last year. Harrell had been living with her for the past two weeks.

To Mizelle, Harrell was just a normal, lazy young man. "He isn't the monster they say he is," said Mizelle, sitting on a sofa in the living room Friday as rare Mississippi snow fell outside. "He came here to visit, maybe find a job. He liked it here and in no way did he act or say anything that would make me think he'd done anything wrong — especially child *advertiser censored* or murder."

Federal agents arrested Harrell in Meridian at about 2 p.m. Thursday. Deputies with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department escorted Harrell from the federal building to the Lauderdale County Detention Facility where he is now fighting extradition back to Florida. Sollie said officials there will have submit documents for a governor's warrant in order to bring Harrell back to Florida.

For the two women though, this experience has left them shell shocked. "We didn't have a clue about this," said Mingledorff. "We are still in a daze both about the feds being here and why."

Clay sheriff defends lengthy procedure to arrest child-*advertiser censored* suspect

Beseler vigorously defended his officers and the investigation Friday, saying that questions about whether Harrell should have been off the street before Somer’s death were “irresponsible.”

Diena Thompson, Somer’s mother, declined comment Friday afternoon through her attorney, Michael Freed. “She doesn’t want to react to anything until she knows all of the details,” Freed said.

Rod Buchanan, whose daughter is one of Harrell’s former roommates, said authorities said Harrell would not to consent to a search of his computer. Beseler would not discuss whether Harrell gave consent.

Buchanan complimented the work of Clay detectives and said they were concerned about having a solid case and doing everything by the book. “If they would have acted sooner, the guy probably would have walked away or gotten a slap on the wrist,” Buchanan said.

If that is true and he had to get out of the house, such a removal would fit the Last Seen horoscope for Somer. The Moon ruled his past household, Cancer on H. 12 of his past, and was afflicted. The Moon was 5° from his H. 4 cusp, which would have been physically taking his belongings out of the dwelling perforce.[/quote]

*advertiser censored* suspect's link to Somer case uncertain
Clay investigators, girl's family remain tight-lipped in case.

In the days after a 7-year-old vanished on her way home from school, authorities launched a massive manhunt, interviewing all the registered sex offenders in a 5-mile radius. This week, nearly four months after she died, Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler announced a person of interest in the case, an unemployed 24-year-old restaurant worker who lived on and off in Somer's neighborhood. Friends and authorities say he kept files of child *advertiser censored* on his computer. Somer's mother, Diena Thompson, was trying not to get her hopes up, her attorney said Friday.

Harrell's aunt said she does not believe he is capable of violence. "They tried to make it sound like he's some monster, but he's not," said Kriss Mizelle, who let Harrell stay with her in Meridian. "I could say all these good things about him, but nobody wants to hear that. They think you're delusional and don't know about his secret life, but he's a good kid."

Family friend Rod Buchanan says Harrell lived on and off with his parents at a brick ranch home not far from Somer's. Buchanan said his own stepson was playing on Harrell's computer last year and found some pornographic pictures. He told the adults in the family, but it was "kinda brushed under the rug," and no one reported it, Buchanan said. Later that year, Harrell moved in with Buchanan's stepdaughter and her fiance at an apartment a few miles away.

According to both Buchanan and a report from the Clay County Sheriff's Office, they discovered in August that Harrell was stealing from them and asked him to leave. He left his computer behind, so they turned it on, curious. "Our kids saw stuff that nobody should ever have to see," said Buchanan, adding that his stepdaughter now wants to talk with a therapist to deal with the trauma of the images of child *advertiser censored*. Buchanan said it was clear what the files were when they turned on the computer. Buchanan's wife, a nurse in a neighboring county, asked a deputy what her daughter should do, and they decided she should bring the computer to authorities there. The computer was turned over to Clay County authorities, but the case was still under investigation when Somer disappeared Oct. 19. That week, Buchanan and his wife passed Harrell's parents' house, noting how close it was to Somer's. "I got goosebumps," Buchanan said. The Buchanans went straight to Clay deputies and told them about Harrell.

Freed, Diena Thompson's attorney, said neither she nor her daughter knew Harrell.

Mizelle, Harrell's aunt, said he moved about three weeks ago from Florida to Meridian because he had visited and liked the area. It wasn't clear where he had been before then. "They made it seem like he ran here to hide, but he was putting in job applications and using his Social Security number," she said. Harrell was originally from Lucedale, Miss., and was home-schooled before moving to Florida. He worked various jobs, from cooking to retail, Mizelle said. She said authorities also took a computer from her home Thursday.

The house had two snow-covered white hearses in the yard, and Mizelle said they were used for haunted house displays during Halloween. Some neighbors were jumpy Friday, and 59-year-old Mardi Hemphill carried a pistol in the pocket of her gray sweat shirt. She said Harrell seemed like a nice guy and that Mizelle and her partner, Larenda Mingledorff, are nice people and respected in the community. "They wouldn't turn anyone away," she said, adding they had no idea what Harrell had been accused of.

Somer Thompson's Father Reacts To 'Person Of Interest' Arrest

"It's like reliving it all over again. We've waited so long to find out who this man was and to finally see his face on TV was a feeling of I'm not ready for this yet," said her father Sam Thompson, who lives in Alamance County. He spoke with reporters at Ye Old Country Kitchen in Snow Camp Friday. The owner of the restaurant allowed journalists to gather there to talk with Thompson.

Sam Thompson said he is ready for answers and closure about how his daughter Somer died. "It's been painful. There's a process of healing, which is tremendous, but without knowing who did it or how she was taken, these are all thoughts in your mind once you let your mind start to wander, you always see the worst," he said.

Thompson said he's not convinced yet that authorities have his daughter's killer. "If they have this person and they connect his name along with Somer, there's definitely something there. But I find out as you find out. They still have to be careful. They don't want this person to get away on a loophole," he said.

So what does he want to happen to whoever did take Somer? "I think he should be put away in a solitary confinement cell with no sunlight for the rest of his life. He should have to suffer something. Just being executed, that's the easy way out," he said.

One of the hardest things for Thompson might still be to come. "As a father to have his daughter taken and to have to look this man in his eyes one day. That's something that I really have to pray hard about that I'll be able to look this man in the face and forgive him for what he's done," he said.

Thompson's immediate focus is on remembering his daughter. "We miss her so much," he said crying. "Now all I have are memories."

Thompson is becoming an advocate for child safety. He points to jessicaslawnownc.org for examples on how serious the threats are. He said a "Somer's Law" is in the works to prevent children from walking home alone. "How many more laws are we going to have to name after our dead children before we wake up and do something about it and stop this from happening," Thompson said.

Mississippi sheriff says man of interest in Somer Thompson slaying fighting extraditionJarred Harrell is charged in a Clay County warrant with child pornograpy; scheduled to be in court tomorrow

Sheriff Billy Sollie told The Merdian (Ms.) Star newspaper that Jarred Harrell, who is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow morning, plans to force police to prove who he is and that he is the man wanted on the child *advertiser censored* warrant. Federal marshals arrested Harrell in Meridian, in east-central Mississippi, Thursday without incident.

If Harrell follows through with his intent to fight extradition, Florida investigators will have to submit documents to the Mississippi governor so that he can issue a governor’s warrant allowing Harrell to be brought to Clay County. The procedure, routine whenever someone fights extradition, can take a few weeks.

National case lands in Meridian
2/14/10
<snipped>
Sitting on either ends of a dark brown, leather sofa Larenda Mingledorff and Kriss Mizelle shared bewildered looks late Friday afternoon while outside a silent snow fell.
On Thursday the two friends who share a house at 1520 22nd Avenue Heights in Meridian were thrust into a very serious, but surreal situation, when federal agents from the FBI and US Marshals Office abruptly showed up on the spacious porch of their large country style home. "No they were inside the house!" said Mingledorff. "I got a call that said there were cops in and around the house. I was shocked!" The shock hasn't worn off. "I just refuse to believe he would do something like this," said Mizelle as she looked at Mingledorff. "There was nothing to indicate he had anything to do with what they said. I still have anxiety attacks just thinking about it."

Mizelle said she'd been trying to help her nephew since he showed up at her home in Meridian. "He didn't have a job so I took him to the employment office to sign up," said Mizelle. "He took his resume to various businesses to apply for jobs. His name and other identification was plastered everywhere."

Mingledorff said contrary to rumors, Harrell didn't work for Queen City Recycling in Meridian of which she is the manager. He ran errands for her and did yard work to earn a few dollars to go out to eat and the mall, of which he did regularly. But he was not an employee of the business, she said. Again Mizelle came to Harrell's defense saying he didn't act strange or try to hide anything while staying with her. "I sat at his computer with him while he built a Web site for me," Mizelle said. "There was nothing I could see on it that would indicate anything sinister or illegal. He didn't seem nervous while I was there. It just doesn't add up to me."

During the raid Thursday, agents confiscated Harrell's computer and the one belonging to Mingledorff. Anything that could connect to the Internet was taken away.

Mizelle described Harrell as an ordinary boy. He had girlfriends, according to her. She declined to call him a man because she saw in him a very boyish kind of behavior despite his age. She said he was just lazy and easy going like most guys in their early 20s. And Mizelle was quick to defend her entire family, not just Harrell. "We are not trash!" she said emphatically. "I'm proud of my family and I hate that his name and face is all over the news and that my sister and her family has to put up with this stigma now."

Mizelle, still sitting on the sofa, said this latest ordeal may be over for her but she said her sister and family will have to endure weeks, maybe months more of scrutiny. "It just infuriates me this is happening," Mizelle said..

The man named last week as a person of interest in the abduction and slaying of 7-year-old Somer Thompson is fighting extradition from Mississippi.
The sheriff of Lauderdale County, Miss., told Channel 4 that Harrell declined to sign a waiver that would allow him to be turned over to Clay County authorities. Harrell will remain in the Lauderdale County Jail until Florida Gov. Charlie Crist signs an order of extradition.

Are Children In NE Florida Safe?
Recent Killings Of Somer Thompson, Makia Coney Raise Questions

POSTED: Monday, February 15, 2010

Missing children cases have been a heightened priority around northeast Florida recently, especially in the case of 7-year-old Somer Thompson in October and 17-year-old Makia Coney just last week. Both girls disappeared, only to be found soon after, killed.

Satsuma girl Haleigh Cummings also went missing more than a year ago, and she still hasn't been found. And weeks ago, a Westside teen was attacked and sexually assaulted on her way to school.

Channel 4's Jennifer Bauer spoke with Jay Howell, who helped found the Center for Missing and Exploited Children, about keeping children safe. "It's frightening for even the professionals who work on cases of crimes against children," Howell said.

Howell, who lives in Jacksonville, said what's happening to children in the community is scary. "This is very disturbing and it's something that needs a community response, and it needs the parents to sit down and openly, but calmly talk to children about safety precautions," Howell said.

Howell said children are easy targets because they're trusting, and teens never think anything bad's going to happen to them. "Kids live in a cocoon of safety," Howell said. "They have an innocence, a trusting, and they're a difficult population for us to convince that there is danger out there, they need to be careful."

Harrell will no longer have an extradition hearing in Mississippi. Sheriff Billy Sollie says only paperwork needs to be completed for the extradition to happen, and Harrell's next hearing will likely be back in Florida if he is forced to return.

Harrell is currently being held on a $1 million bond in the Lauderdale County Detention Center in Meridian.

If Harrell follows through with his intent to fight extradition, Florida investigators will have to submit documents to Gov. Charlie Crist, said Jacksonville Defense Attorney David Robbins. Crist would then ask Mississippi's governor to extradite to Harrell to Florida.

The process is expected to take a couple of weeks. Sheriff Sollie says in his nearly 25 years with law enforcement, he's never seen a governor's extradition request denied.

Somer's Father Talks About Man's Arrest

Sam Thompson wears a purple ribbon every day in honor of his daughter Somer Thompson, who was killed in October. The ribbon is Somer's favorite color, and Thompson said it makes him feel good to have it close to his heart. "It's just a small memento," Thompson said. "Reminds me of my daughter. I miss her so much."

On the day police arrested Harrell, even before the news broke, Thompson said he couldn't stop thinking about Somer. He wonders now if it was a sign that things are starting to move forward in his daughter's case.

"As a father to have his daughter taken and to have to look this man in the eye, that's something I have to pray hard about that I'll be able to look this man in the face for what he's done," Thompson said.

Man of interest in Somer Thompson slaying had bizarre upbringing
Jarred Harrell and an older sister bounced between mother and father

Story updated at 5:50 AM on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010
<snipped>
Loretta Harrell answered a knock at her ranch-style home in the deep Mississippi woods six weeks ago to find two strangers standing outside. The men told Harrell they were FBI agents and asked to speak to her husband about his son, Jarred. Startled, Jarred’s stepmother shut and locked the door and called for her husband, a local prison guard. It had been six years since Howard Harrell had seen Jarred at the end of a bitter, bizarre custody battle that found the two hugging on the steps of the Lauderdale County courthouse. They crossed paths twice more, but never spoke, Howard Harrell told the Times-Union Tuesday.

The FBI agents told Harrell that Jarred wasn’t cooperating with a criminal investigation in Florida, where he’d spent time with his birth mother and her newest husband. They said Jarred fit a profile, but didn’t say of what, and asked his father for a DNA sample.

Harrell let one of the men swab the inside of his cheeks and watched them walk out a short time later. They left behind plenty of questions.

Harrell got some answers last week in a frantic phone call from his daughter in Jacksonville. Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler had just announced that Jarred, 24, was arrested in Meridian, Miss., on child-*advertiser censored* charges. Beseler also identified the unemployed laborer as a man of interest in the Oct. 19 disappearance and slaying of 7-year-old Somer Thompson. Harrell and his wife said they remain stunned by the news, which they’ve seen repeated on local TV. “I sure don’t see him doing none of that,” said Harrell, 51. “I’m really still standing with my mouth open,” said his wife, 52.

Jarred remains this morning in an isolation cell in a Meridian jail while fighting extradition back to Florida. Authorities said they expect him to be returned as early as next week. Meanwhile, 125 miles to the south in the two-stoplight town of Lucedale, a family torn apart years earlier in a bitter dispute wonders what’s next.

The past
Mississippi court records describe a bizarre series of events that found Jarred and his sister bounced between their mother and Harrell for parts of their young lives. Howard and Annis Harrell were married in Lucedale in October 1979. Their daughter was born seven months later, while Jarred was born in July 1985, the records show. The couple divorced a year later and Annis got custody of the children. Harrell got them back three years later following the events outlined in a judge’s 1990 order in the case.

Shortly before the Harrells separated, she was working as a secretary for Joe Newman, a married, eccentric local inventor. The two became lovers with the knowledge of Newman’s wife, while Annis still had custody of the children, the judge’s order states.

In February 1989, Newman publicized what the order states is a 17-page “news release” in which he announced he was married not only to his wife, but to Annis Harrell and her 8-year-old daughter. The order does not indicate why the release was issued or how, but the order says Newman described himself as a prophet of God and that his wife believed him, among other things. Alerted to the public statements, state child welfare officials sought to take the children from their mother, who officially married Newman in September 1989. During a court hearing in the custody matter, Newman said his marriage to the daughter was spiritual, not sexual, and that he would debate with God whether to consummate the marriage, the order states.

The judge said he didn’t doubt the depth of the convictions of either Newman or Annis, but he ordered the children removed from their home. The girl went immediately with her father. Jarred, then 3, stayed with Annis’ mother until also moving in with Harrell. Annis divorced Newman and tried to get her children back, though a judge called her attempts manipulative and refused. But in 1993 about five years after Harrell got the children, he gave them back. “You know how kids are; they want to be with their momma,” Harrell said.

Annis did not respond to several interview attempts by the Times-Union. Harrell said he almost immediately lost touch with the children. He said he didn’t see them for eight years until their mother was summoned to court in Lucedale in 2003 as he sought to stop paying child support. Annis had earlier remarried and left town before returning some time later. Jarred was now 18, his sister 23.

After the hearing, which resulted in the end of the payments, Harrell embraced the children on the courthouse steps before they parted. While he stayed in touch with his daughter, Harrell said he only saw Jarred two other times before his mug shot appeared last week on their local news. On both occasions, at a local Walmart and at the birth of his niece, Harrell said Jarred inexplicably turned away from him without speaking.

The future
Howard Harrell said he has no plans to reach out to Jarred as he sits in jail. He said he wonders, however, whether Jarred is being railroaded by authorities eager to solve Somer Thompson’s slaying.

Beseler has refused to say what evidence exists that might link Harrell to Somer, who used to walk home from school passed a home where Jarred was known to stay. The home, now unoccupied, is owned by a man now married to Jarred’s mother. “They’re just tying to find somebody to put it on,” Howard Harrell said.

He said there’s one more thing he can’t get off his mind: He’s not really certain if Jarred is even his son. Harrell said Jarred’s mother always insisted he is the father and court documents link them as father and son. But Harrell’s current wife said the two men look nothing alike. And Harrell, still distrusting of Jarred’s mother, said he has his doubts. Not that he’s ready to disown Jarred yet. “I don’t have no other choice,” Harrell said. “I raised him for five years.”

Harrell said if anything comes from the ongoing criminal investigation, it may be his chance to get an answer. Along with the DNA sample he gave to the FBI, Harrell said he has been told his son changed his mind and gave his own sample some time later. Harrell said he hopes another stranger or two will come knocking on his door again and let him know.

No extradition date set yet for Harrell
February 17, 2010
<snipped>
No date has been set for the extradition of Jarred Mitchell Harrell to Clay County from a Meridian, Miss., jail, leaving the future of the person of interest in the Somer Thompson child murder case in limbo – at least for the time being.

Clay county Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Mary Justino said on Tuesday, Feb. 16, that no one knows when extradition proceedings will begin for the 24-year-old man, who faces 29 counts of possession of child *advertiser censored* and has been named by Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler as a person of interest in the October abduction and subsequent murder of 7-year-old Somer Thompson of Orange Park. "We simply don’t know yet," Justino said. "No date has been set; but it’s going to take a special governor’s warrant."

Police believe Harrell spent at least some time living with his mother at 1152 Gano Ave., which is near a vacant house at 1080 Gano that federal and state investigators scoured for forensic evidence shortly after Somer’s disappearance. The second house also has been examined for evidence. Both dwellings are along the route Somer used to walk home from Grove Park Elementary School.

If Harrell continues to fight extradition, Florida investigators will have to submit documents of probable cause to Gov. Charlie Crist. The Florida governor then will need to send a warrant to Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, requesting that Harrell be brought back to Clay County. The process could take days or weeks.

"After working closely with the Office of State Attorney Angela Corey in the 4th Circuit, today I requested that Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour grant the extradition of fugitive Jarred Mitchell Harrell to Florida, where he faces 29 counts of possession of child *advertiser censored*," Crist said in a statement.

"I am grateful for the Mississippi law enforcement officers who apprehended this dangerous suspect. It is crucial to remain vigilant in prosecuting crimes against our children. Those who perpetrate horrendous offenses against Florida's most vulnerable citizens must be brought to justice."

Crist requests Mississippi governor extradite Harrell in child *advertiser censored* case
Person of interest in the Somer Thompson slaying, Harrell is fighting to stay put

Gov. Charlie Crist requested on Thursday that Mississippi extradite Jarred Harrell to Florida to face charges of child *advertiser censored* in Clay County, where he also has been named a person of interest in the Somer Thompson slaying. Harrell, 24, could be extradited as early as next week, Mississippi authorities told the Times-Union this week.

Crist's office today faxed the extradition request to Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, said Sterling Ivey, a spokesman for Crist. Ivey said the request was also being mailed overnight. With the Florida request in hand, Barbour can sign a governor's warrant ordering Harrell returned to Florida. Barbour's press secretary, Dan Turner, told the Times-Union he's not sure who received the request and he would likely know more Friday.

Haleigh's, Somer's Families Get Support
Justice Coalition Gathers Local Families Of Victims Of Crime

POSTED: Thursday, February 18, 2010
UPDATED: 7:14 pm EST February 18, 2010
<snipped>
With a picture of her granddaughter sitting on a table, Marie Griffis wore her pain on her face. Her granddaughter, 6-year-old Satsuma girl Haleigh Cummings, has been missing for more than a year, and she still hasn't gotten the answer to this question: "She really was missing. All I could think was, 'Why? Why her?'" Griffis said.

The Justice Coalition gathered local families of victims of crime Thursday to offer their support. The families have similar stories and have at times been desperate for help. Phillip Bowling, the grandfather of 7-year-old Somer Thompson, an Orange Park girl who went missing in October and was found dead in a landfill days later, spoke about his family's lowest moment: when he got the call his granddaughter was missing.

He and his wife, Debbie Bowling, talked to Channel 4 after Thursday's event, explaining the road hasn't gotten any easier since it was announced last week that a person of interest had been arrested in Somer's murder case. In fact, the Bowlings said when the news broke that 24-year-old Jarred Harrell was in custody, things got harder for their daughter and Somer's mom, Diena Thompson. "She is not doing well," Debbie Bowling said. "The news was bittersweet. It's been very hard for her especially." "I don't need the incidental news," Phillip Bowling said. "I don't need to know what's going on to get that to happen. I just need to know that it has happened."

The Bowlings want an arrest in their granddaughter's case, and they want to know what happened Somer. "Everything. We want to know everything. So many questions," Debbie Bowling said.

The Bowlings said they find strength in each other, and they stay close as they wait. And at this point, they said there's no judgment.

"(Diena) doesn't want to point fingers at anybody because fingers have been pointed to us, and she doesn't want to do that to somebody who's already done it to us," Debbie Bowling said. Phillip Bowling said the Justice Coalition will continue to be a source of support for the family because they're still a long way from any real closure.

Somer Thompson's grandparents talk about her murder

"We are hanging on by a thread, I think," said Somer's grandfather. Loving embraces from family and friends are what keeps Debbie and Philip Bowling going. "We have to stay together. We have to support each other. Even though there have been so much support from everybody else," he said.

Since Somer's disappearance, that family has grown to include the Justice Coalition. They were one of the first groups to reach out to them. They told them what to expect as police continue their search for Somer's killer. "It's really an invaluable source when you don't know what will happen." And who could know what to expect. So they are standing by as police finish their investigation. "In this situation, I have to let police fix this problem for me," said her grandmother.

Now the Bowlings are reaching to the Justice Coalition again after investigators named Jarred Harrell a person of interest. "Finding out who this possible suspect is has been bitter sweet. It doesn't bring any joy to us. The real joy will come when they tell us who killed Somer," said Debbie Bowling. The Justice Coalition relies on donations to help families like Somer Thompson's get through these difficult times. You can go to www.justicecoalition.org to found out how you can help.

Harrell grew up in polygamist home
Last Update: 2/16 5:08 pm
<snipped>
My investigation into Jarred Harrell took me two hours and 15 minutes away from Meridian, Mississippi, where he's locked up in jail to Lucedale, Mississippi- Harrell's hometown. There, I found Harrell Rd., which property records show Harrell's dad lives off of. I called his parent's house. The woman who answered the phone said "no comment." So, next I headed to the George County courthouse, where a search of Harrell's parent's divorce documents revealed a lot about Harrell's childhood.

Documents show Harrell's mom spiritually married a polygamist who was legally married to another woman. The custody papers show Harrell's step dad called himself "a messenger of God." On page two he said he was "the one prophesied centuries ago by the seven major religions of the world to appear near the year 2,000 for the purpose of teaching the world the path to peace."

Documents also show Harrell's step-dad later spiritually married a third wife: Jarred's 8-year-old sister.

Papers show the step dad announced his marriage to the eight year old in a news release- and both kids were removed from the home. Other court papers show they were in state custody for about a year. In 1990, Jarred's dad got custody of him and his sister. Years later, they were given back to their mom.

We also visited the George County Sheriff's Department to see if Harrell has a criminal record in his hometown. He does not.

I'm learning Jarred Harrell is keeping to himself in the Lauderdale County Detention Center.

Photojournalist Russ Pyne and I chatted with Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie this morning. Sheriff Sollie told me Harrell hasn't had any visitors. He says Harrell was offered a phone call during the snow storm here on Friday, but didn't make one. The Sheriff also told me Harrell hasn't been appointed a lawyer in Lauderdale County and no other attorneys representing Harrell have contacted him.

Last night there were snow flurries here in Meridian, but they didn't stick. This time the snow didn't prevent Harrell from appearing in court (a snow storm did last Friday)- he did. Harrell still refuses to sign a waiver to be extradited back to Clay County. This means Governor Charlie Christ must get special permission from Mississippi's governor. I talked with Mary Justino from the Clay County Sheriff's Department this morning on the phone. She tells me she's not sure how long that special permission will take. It can take several weeks, but Sheriff Sollie felt like it would be go quickly than usual since this is a high profile case.

Clay authorities to keep travel plans for Jarred Harrell secret

Citing security concerns, the Clay County Sheriff's Office will not release details about its return of Jarred Mitchell Harrell to Clay from Mississippi to face child-*advertiser censored* charges.

The Times-Union reported Friday that Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour issued a governor's warrant calling for Harrell to be returned to Florida, agreeing to Florida Gov. Charlie Crist's request for extradition. The Clay Sheriff's Office released a copy of the governor's warrant in a noon release about noon today. The release said officials will e-mail local media when Harrell is secured in the Clay County jail, but not beforehand.

"Because the safety of all law enforcement officers involved and the successful extradition of this individual are of upmost importance, our agency will not reveal the exact date and time of the planned extradition," the release said. Officials in Meridian told the Times-Union they expect Harrell to be returned this week.

Harrell once lived in his mother's Gano Avenue home along the same route Somer took when she disappeared while walking home from school. Harrell's father, Howard Harrell, told the Times-Union FBI agents visited his Mississippi home about seven weeks ago to collect DNA evidence in connection with their investigation of Harrell.

Howard Harrell said the agents told him his son wasn't cooperating with their request for his DNA. After the agents visit, Jarred Harrell gave them a DNA sample, Howard Harrell said. One of the many pieces of evidence police said they've been hoping would identify Somer's killer is DNA samples taken from where she was found in a Folkston landfill two days after she disappeared.

The sheriff in Mississippi told Channel 4 that will happen sometime this week. He said the exchange will only take about 30 minutes. He said Harrell will be checked out of the jail and turned over to Clay County deputies cuffed and shackled. The sheriff said Harrell will be put into the car and driven back to Orange Park.

For security reasons, there will likely be multiple cars and many officers making the 10-hour trip.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office said it will not reveal the exact time and location of when and where Harrell's extradition will take place. Investigators said Harrell spent some time in Orange Park and lived in a house on Gano Avenue, the street where Somer was last seen alive in October.

Investigators said more charges could come against Harrell in addition to the child *advertiser censored* charges he's facing.

A warrant signed by the Mississippi governor over the weekend gives permission to Clay County deputies to go get Harrell and take him back to Florida. Channel 4's Jennifer Bauer and Matt James followed the three-vehicle caravan carrying Harrel until she was blocked by Lauderdale County deputies. For security reasons, multiple cars and many officers are expected to make the nine-hour trip to Green Cove Springs, Fla.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office said Monday it would not reveal the exact time and location of when and where Harrell's extradition will take place, but given that he left Meridian mid-morning Tuesday,it is expected he will make a first appearance on the child *advertiser censored* charges at the Clay County Courthouse Wednesday morning.

While Harrell faces no charges in connection with Somer Thompson's death, investigators said he lived for a time in a house on Gano Avenue, a few doors down from where Somer was last seen alive in October.

As Tuba previously pointed out, the Last Seen MARS 01 Leo is partile conjunct Jarred Harrell's natal SUN and the Last Seen MIDHEAVEN 20 Scorpio is tightly conjunct JH's natal SATURN 21 Scorpio Rx.

It gets worse. The Solar Eclipse in effect at Last Seen (29 Cancer) is partile conjunct JH's natal MARS and the Lunar Eclipse (13 Aquarius) is partile conjunct JH's natal JUPITER.

I find this significant because SUN-MARS are conjunct (albeit out-of-sign) in JH's chart, with both widely opposed JUPITER, which expands everything it touches. Harrell's SUN-MARS also squares natal PLUTO, giving the sense, in light of the transiting eclipses, of violent & self-serving tendencies (SUN-MARS sq. PLUTO) gone wild (JUPITER).

At the time of the Last Seen, JH's MARS by Secondary Progression at 15 Leo, was partile trine Somer Thompson's natal SUN 15 Aries, and his Secondary Progressed SUN at 24 Leo was both partile square Somer's natal MARS 24 Taurus and partile inconjunct her natal (sunrise) MOON 24 Capricorn. Assuming he was the perp, it would have been easy (trine) to attack (MARS) her, and any efforts she made to fight him off (her MARS square his SP SUN) would have been for naught.

On 10/19/2009, Somer Thompson's Solar Arc MOON at 02 Aquarius (based on sunrise natal position) close opposed Event MARS 01 Leo (exact same degree as Jarred Harrell's natal SUN). S.A. MOON also formed a tight square with JH's natal PLUTO (01 Scorpio) since he has the SUN-MARS square PLUTO configuration natally. I might also point out that Jarred Harrell's natal MARS/PLUTO midpoint = 15 Virgo, partile inconjuncts Somer Thompson's natal SUN 15 Aries.

As many of you know, the MARS/PLUTO midpoint is strongly associated with violence, rage, rape & murder. There are other connections in these charts that draw me to a similar conclusion. In fact, there are too many connections amongst these charts for me to think them coincidental.

I expect that soon enough, we will hear LE announce that Jarred Harrell is under arrest for the rape and murder of Somer Thompson.

Thanks,
Soulscape

SS,
Thanks for the post. I've had a gut feeling since his arrest & learning his background, that this was Somer's the evil monster! :furious:

Did anyone catch that 7-weeks ago LE came for his DNA....they've had him as a POI for a long time now!

Way before his arrest for the *advertiser censored*.......they wanted JH's DNA!!!!
LE I bet will have a DNA match that was taken from Somer's body when JH's comes back!

A three-vehicle caravan of Clay County investigators and federal authorities left Mississippi this morning with Jarred Harrell, who's being returned to Clay to face child *advertiser censored* charges and questions in the Somer Thompson slaying. "He is gone," a relieved Lauderdale County (Miss.) Sheriff Billy Sollie told the Times-Union this morning.

The group sped off from the Lauderdale County Detention Facility about 9:15 central time for what is about a 9 hour trip. It's unclear when they are expected to arrive at the Clay County jail. Clay authorities, citing safety concerns, said they will not publicly discuss the travel plans until Harrell is booked into the local jail.

If the caravan gets in before midnight, Harrell is likely to make his first court appearance in the morning. That is likely to be done by video from the jail, court officials said.

Harrell's father, Howard Harrell, told the Times-Union FBI agents visited his Mississippi home about seven weeks ago to collect DNA evidence in connection with their investigation of Harrell. No Rush On Harrell *advertiser censored* Charges, Says Expert
February 23, 2010 7:04 PM

So how will the case against against Jarred Harrell play out?

WOKV Legal Analyst Mark Rubin says it's still too early to say how Harrell's arrest on 29 counts of child *advertiser censored* possession will affect the Somer Thompson murder case. And Rubin says Harrell's lawyer will likely try to shield his client. "I would assume that this individual is represented by counsel, and if the attorney is doing a good job, then he's not going to let the state interrogate him (Harrell) now that it's known that he's a person of interest in the Somer Thompson case," said Rubin.

Rubin thinks the child *advertiser censored* case probably won't go to trial for a year or so, especially if there is believed to be some connection to the murder, as investigators will look to use that time to get some leverage in the case.

Action News Exclusive: Phone calls Jarred Harrell made while in jail
Last Update: 2/23 11:46 pm
<snipped>
Action News has exclusive phone conversations between Jarred Harrell and his mother, while Harrell was in jail in Mississippi. They're the first words we've heard from Jarred Harrell. There are two phone calls. In the first one, Harrell's mother says, "Hey Honey. How are you doing?" Harrell responds, "Holding in there I guess."

The conversation sounds like it happened just after he was arrested in Mississippi. Harrell was charged with having child *advertiser censored* in Clay County and now he's a person of interest in the murder of Somer Thompson. His mother asks him whether he's been in front of a judge, or even talked to an attorney. Harrell says no and his mother gives him some advice. "Keep your chin up, keep your mouth shut, and get an attorney."

He says he's trying too, but adds, "Just don't believe anything they say." Harrell's mom says "Honey, I don't believe anything. Trust me. The thing is that I'm your alibi. So I have to be real careful what I say to anybody. We're making no comments to the news. The little girl's mother's making no comments. So they're trying to pull from everything else they can and it's making them look like idiots. So the longer you're there, trust me, the better it is. It's tough I know but just hang in there ok and trust me we've got a whole group of people here doing everything they can on that end and that's pretty far reaching so you've just go trust me."

The second call ends with Harrell's mother promising to get to Mississippi to help him through this. She says she is headed that way. Harrell says, "Alright, well I don't know what to do. I'll just wait." His mom says, "No, that's all you can do baby. You're just going to have to sit there let it play out and just let me take care of it." His mother tells Harrell she loves him.

Harrell is in the Clay County jail. No word yet, on when he'll be arraigned on the child *advertiser censored* charges.

What does "Person of Interest" mean?
Last Update: 2/23 11:43 pm
<snipped>
That tells Florida Coastal School of Law Professor BJ Priester the case isn't so open shut. "If they don't think they have the evidence yet. If they don't have enough to go to a judge and ask for an arrest warrant, then maybe they call it a person of interest." said Priester. "Sometimes it is just a euphemism for calling somebody a suspect." said Priester.

Priester says giving somebody the "Person of Interest" title may allow people to come forward with information and strengthen a case. The Professor says getting a murder confession from Harrell may be very challenging because of the child *advertiser censored* possession charges he already faces. "The problem is they don't have a lot to offer because he's already looking at a long time in jail." He does not have any incentive to confess, if he in fact did it," said Priester.

"It has been so long, I'm sure [investigators] have done their research and now that they are letting us know what's going on, I'm sure there's some substance to it so it makes you feel good that something is moving forward," said Bronson.

Tuesday in separate statements both of Somer's parents conveyed they are looking forward to an arrest in the case and have the up most confidence in the sheriff's office; a sheriff's office that is facing a lot of pressure to find Somer's killer and help give parents like Jamie Rathje some comfort.

"Yes, it's great to know we might have the guy that [killed Somer] but just walking by [where he lived] and remembering and knowing what happened to that little girl, it's almost too hard to bear," said Rathje.

Jarred Harrell now in Clay jail; court appearance pending
Harrell returned from Mississippi to face child *advertiser censored* charges, questioning in Somer Thompson case.

Story updated at 2:26 AM on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010
<snipped>
Jarred Harrell has been booked into the Clay County jail on child *advertiser censored* charges and may make his first appearance before a local judge as early as 7:45 a.m., the Clay County Sheriff's Office said this morning.

A press release issued by the Sheriff's Office at 1:46 a.m. said:
"The extradition of Jarred Harrell to Clay County is now complete and Harrell has arrived safely at the Clay County jail, where the booking process is underway. There is still a chance that Jarred Harrell may make his first appearance later this morning."

That court appearance, when an arraignment date will be set, would be done beginning about 7:45 a.m. by closed circuit TV before Judge Richard Townsend. If the booking process is not completed in time, Harrell will appear before the judge Thursday, the Sheriff's Office said. Booking paperwork and Harrell's jail mugshot are expected to be released shortly, the release said.

Citing safety concerns, Clay authorities did not publicly discuss Harrell's travel until he was booked into the local jail. Several local television reporters waited anxiously with live broadcasts for the caravan's arrival last night, noting roads around the jail were blocked off by deputies. But the caravan did not arrive until after the late news ended, leaving reporters puzzled at why it hadn't arrived earlier. No explanation was given by the Sheriff's Office.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that Jarred Mitchell Harrell has been booked into jail and might appear in court Wednesday. Harrell was arrested Feb. 11 in Meridian, Miss., and faces 29 counts of possession of child *advertiser censored*. Last week, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist asked Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour to extradite Harrell. Authorities say Harrell is wanted for questioning in the death of Somer Thompson, whose body was found in a south Georgia landfill two days after she disappeared while walking home from school.

In this undated photo provided by the Clay County Sheriff Office, Jarred Harrell is shown. Authorities have arrested Harrell, whom they are calling a person of interest in the kidnapping and killing of a northeast Florida girl whose body was found in a landfill after she vanished on her way home from school.

Somer Thompson murder investigation: person of interest Harrell extradition update
February 24, 6:18 AM
<snipped>
Maintaining tight security and virtually non-existent media access, on Feb. 23, police transported Jarred Harrell from a Meridian, Mississippi detention center, returning the 24 year-old fugitive to Clay County's Green Cove Springs jail, according to a police announcement.

In a briefing received by True Crime Examiner on Feb. 24, police spokesperson, Mary Justino advised that "the extradition of Jarred Harrell to Clay County, Florida is now complete and Harrell has arrived safely at the Clay County Jail where the booking process is underway." "There is still a chance that Jarred Harrell may make his first appearance in county court later this morning in Green Cove Springs," Justino says. "If so," the Clay County Sheriff's Office public information officer advises, "it will be in Judge Richard Townsend's courtroom 4 beginning at 7:45 a.m." [Feb. 24].

Justino advises that "The Clay County Courthouse opens to the public (and media) at 7 a.m.," and that "if the booking process is not completed in time, a first appearance for Harrell would be scheduled for the following morning."

Harrell's travel info "considered tactical"
In her latest briefing, the CCSO spokesperson adds, "Information regarding today's extradition procedure, route and timing of travel is considered tactical and will not be released at this time." According to Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour's Rendition Warrant, "it appears that said fugitive [Harrell] has fled from justice ... where he has taken refuge." Governor Barbour signed the document on Feb.18, which allowed Harrell's extradition to proceed a week after his Feb.11 arrest by federal agents. Initially, the suspect refused to be returned to Florida, although an aunt with whom Harrell had been staying for several weeks in Meridian maintained he had not been fleeing from the law, reports say.

Harrell was living on same street where Somer vanished
Harrell's 29 child *advertiser censored* possession charges occurred after his two Orange Park former roommates told police they discovered child *advertiser censored* material on his computer and computer disks in August, then turned them over to police. The computer was not examined until after 7-year-old Somer's death; subsequently, Clay County investigators learned that after being asked to move out of his Wells Road apartment, Harrell inhabited a house on Gano Avenue, around the time Somer Thompson vanished from the same Orange Park street Oct.19, 2009.

Updates To Follow
Harrell's Clay County booking photo and paperwork will be released to the media later on Feb. 24, and will be posted here, along with updates concerning Harrell's court appearance

Investigators say until recently, Harrell lived in a home near Somer Thompson's in Orange Park, FL. Authorities were searching that house earlier this month.

Harrell was held at a jail in Mississippi until he was extradited in a police caravan to the Clay County Jail early Wednesday. The extradition process for the man considered a person of interest in the case has been ongoing since last week. He was in jail on $1 million bail. Harrell said last week that he wanted to fight extradition and would not sign an extradition waiver.

Somer's father, Sam, lives in Graham, NC. He spoke with WFMY News 2's Meghan Packer on the phone after Harrell was announced as a person of interest in the case. Thompson said the news of Harrell's arrest brings up new feelings of fear and anxiety. He said he hopes Harrell is the person responsible for his daughter's death, so there can be an end to the waiting and uncertainty he and everyone else involved in the case has been feeling.

Clay judge orders Jarred Harrell held in child-*advertiser censored* case
Harrell extradited from Mississippi jail; faces Somer Thompson questions

Story updated at 9:25 AM on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010
<snipped>
Jarred Mitchell Harrell appeared briefly this morning before a Clay County judge via closed-circuit television and was ordered held on $1 million bail on 29 counts of child *advertiser censored* pending his arraignment. Harrell, 24, was appointed a public defender and returned to the Clay County jail. His arraignment date was set for March 10.

Fourteen other jail inmates appeared before County Judge Richard Townsend before Harrell. The jail room emptied of the others, Harrell walked in at 8:05 a.m. dressed in a gray-and-white-striped uniform and stood in handcuffs before a lectern as public defender Kate Bedell stood at his side. Townsend said he found there was probable cause to hold Harrell on the child-*advertiser censored* warrant issued Feb. 11. Harrell said nothing other than "Yes, sir," at one point during the hearing, which lasted about a minute.

The only spectator inside the courtroom was Ann Dugger, executive director of The Justice Coalition, a local victims advocate organization. Dugger said she appeared on behalf of Somer's mother, Diena Thompson. "My prayer is that if Jarred Harrell is responsible for this crime [Somer's slaying], may he get the punishment to the fullest extent of the law," Dugger said.

About a dozen motorcycle riders parked their bikes across from the courthouse, hung signs called for "Justice for Somer" and waved to motorists as they passed by honking. A member of the group said they are friends of Somer's mother and showed up to support her. "We want to make sure everybody hasn't forgotten," said Vince Webster, 49, of Green Cove Springs. "We've been supporting Diena and her family since day one and that's what it's all about here this morning. We want justice."

Beseler hadn't discussed evidence in that case, but a Times-Union interview with Harrell's father indicates investigators are relying in part on DNA.

Somer 'person of interest' back in Clay
February 24, 2010
<snipped>
Jarred Harrell is now in the custody of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. The man who has been identified as a person of interest in the abduction and murder of 7-year-old Somer Thompson arrived at the county jail early Wednesday, Feb. 24, and made an initial appearance in court to face child *advertiser censored* charges, the Sheriff’s Office said.

He will formally arraigned on the charges at 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, before Judge John Skinner. Harrell has not be charged in connection with the Somer Thompson case. Clay County authorities picked up Harrell, 24, Tuesday afternoon at the Lauderdale County, Miss., jail. Harrell, 24, faces 29 counts of possession of child *advertiser censored*, the Sheriff’s Office said.

She was last seen near the vacant house after running ahead of her two siblings as they walked home from school on Monday, Oct. 19. The first-grader’s body was found at a South Georgia landfill two days later, ending a massive search that drew national attention.

Harrell told her on the calls that he never signed anything when he was booked, saying the officials in the jail forgot.

"Unfreakingbelievable," his mother replied.

From Jail, Harrell Tells Mom 'I'm Sorry'
Clay County Man Faces Child *advertiser censored* Charges, Person Of Interest In Girl's Slaying

POSTED: Wednesday, February 24, 2010
UPDATED: 1:32 pm EST February 24, 2010
<snipped>
After Jarred Harrell's arrested in Meridian, Miss., on child *advertiser censored* charges out of Clay County, he was held for nearly two weeks in solitary confinement before being extradited to Florida. During that time, he talked with his mother, Annis Dailey, by phone about the charges against him, as well as the fact that he was being called a person of interest in the abduction and killing of 7-year-old Somer Thompson last October.

In the first of two calls released by the Lauderdale County, Miss., Sheriff's Office, Harrell apologized for the situation he's in and talked about his despair.

Harrell: "I literally think the stress is killing me."
Mother: "Trust me. You would not believe everything here. We're right there with you."
Harrell: "I know, I'm sorry."
Mother: "No, no, no, it's not all you. Trust me. It's gonna get a lot uglier for them before it's over with. Trust me."

It's not clear who Dailey was referring to in that statement.

In another part of the conversation, Dailey talked about being her son's alibi.

Mother: "Keep your chin up, keep your mouth shut and get an attorney."
Harrell: "I'm trying. Just don't believe anything."
Mother: :Honey, I don't believe anything. Trust me. The thing is I'm your alibi. So I have to be careful what I say... We're not making any comments to the news, the little girl's mother is not making any comments, so they're trying to pull from everything else they can, so it's making them look like idiots. The longer you're there trust me, the better it is. It's tough I know, but just hang in there."

Representatives of Florida Department of Children and Families visited Dailey's Callahan home on Wednesday morning. They refused to tell Channel 4's Jim Piggott why they were there or even identify what state agency they were with. A DCF spokesman confirmed that their employees visited the home.

While it appeared someone was home, no one answered the door either for the DCF workers or Piggott.

Jarred Harrell appeared before a Clay County FL judge on child *advertiser censored* charges via closed-circuit television this morning at 8:00 am. After a brief hearing his bond was set for $1 Million and his arraignment set for March 10th.

The Appearance Chart is straightforward.

JarredHarrellAppearance.gif

Pisces, the sign of imprisonment, misfortune, fantasy, film, photography, moving pictures rises, with both co-rulers JUPITER & NEPTUNE posited within the 12th House of Imprisonment.

With Aquarius on House 12, modern ruler URANUS symbolizing Harrell within shows confinement/ incarceration. Traditional ruler SATURN is intercepted & retrograde in Libra in the 7th, opposing the ASCENDANT, further suggesting Harrell is caught up in/ restricted by/ interfered with by the long arms of the Law.

SUN 05 Pisces posited within the 12th House describes an incarceration/imprisonment based on a disservice to society (Leo on House 6).

The testimony (House 3) is critical --- Lord 3 MERCURY in critical degree, 21 Fixed, conjunct NEPTUNE of film/fantasy/photographs, semisquare PLUTO of *advertiser censored*. MERCURY the testimony/recordings also sesquisquares the MOON, natural significator of children and here, Lord 5 Children, so we know we are dealing with child *advertiser censored*, particularly as MOON in this Chart is Out of Bounds and opposite PLUTO of *advertiser censored*, as well as parallel MARS, also Out of Bounds, suggesting sex/ sexual urges/ sexual actions out of control.

In this Chart, MOON has last passed over URANUS (Harrell) and will next reach MARS (Lord 8 crime, *advertiser censored*, out-of-control sexuality (because MARS is OOB), linking the accused and the crime together.

=========================

The Chart just discussed describes an Event: the court appearance which took place this morning, wherein Jarred Harrell was charged with 29 counts of child *advertiser censored*. As of that time, Harrell had not been charged with any wrongdoing in relation to the kidnapping, rape and murder of Somer Thompson.

However, when I compared today's Appearance Chart with the Somer Thompson Last Seen Chart, I noticed some troubling connections, not the least of which was that Appearance MARS (01 Leo Rx) had retrograded back to the exact same degree it held in the 10/19/2009 Somer Thompson Last Seen Chart.

You may recall that 01 Leo is the exact degree of Jarred Harrell's natal SUN...

Friends of Somer's family unite outside courthouse
Last Update: 3:11 pm

They gathered as the man police are calling a person of interest in the case made his first appearance in front of a judge. Jarred Harrell, 24, appeared in court emotionless as he learned he would remain there with a $1 million-dollar bond. Friends of Somer's family stood outside the courthouse and told Action News there are full of emotion and sadness. "It's close to my heart. It's all about the heart," said Dee McCollum, biker and family supporter.

Dozens of motorcycle riders stood across the street from the courthouse, waving at cars passing by and holding "Justice for Somer" signs. Some of the riders know Somer's family. Some say they don't know them at all. But all of them knew exactly why they came out today. "We want to see justice served for Somer. It's all about her and the family," said family friend Vince Webster. "We've been supporting Diena and the family since day one and we just want to let everybody know, we haven't forgot. We're still here," he said.

Justice Coalition Executive Director Ann Dugger was in the courtroom as Judge Richard Townsend read Harrell his charges.
She said she showed up because it was too difficult for the family to be there. "I'm here for, not only a mother that needs answers, but a family that needs answers," Dugger said. "They're waiting on answers for a baby that was not only brutally murdered but also thrown in a dumpster like she was a piece of trash." Dugger and the motorcycle riders who gathered outside the courthouse vow to be at as many court appearances as they can.

New "more serious" charges for Jarred Harrell
Last Update: 4:53 pm

Jarred Harrell, the man police say is a person of interest in the murder of 7 year-old Somer Thompson is now facing new "more serious" charges than the charges he already faces. Harrell now faces 12 counts of production of child *advertiser censored* and molestation of that child who is under 12 years old. Police say the new charges do not involve Somer Thompson.

According to the Clay County Sheriff's Office, the new charges are a result of an ongoing criminal investigation into Harrell and his suspected illegal activities.

Because of the added charges, Harrell is now being held in the Clay County jail with no bond. Wednesday morning, Harrell was officially charged on 29 counts of possession of child *advertiser censored*. He was given a $1 million dollar bond.

Harrell accused of molesting child in new charges filed today
Clay judge orders Harrell held on $1 million bail in previous child-*advertiser censored* case; faces Somer Thompson questions

Story updated at 5:44 PM on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010
<snipped>
Clay investigators today charged Jarred Mitchell Harrell with molesting a young child and 12 related child *advertiser censored* counts hours after Harrell was ordered held on $1 million bail in a separate child-*advertiser censored* case, the Sheriff's Office said. The new charges against Harrell, 24, involve the production of 12 images of child *advertiser censored* and the molestation of that child, who is younger than 12 years old, an arrest report said. The charges are one count of lewd and lascivious molestation of a child younger than 12 and 12 counts of producing/promoting a sexual performance by a child.

Much of the arrest warrant served on Harrell today in the new case has been redacted and no details were available about the allegations, including the sex and age of the child. Harrell was served the warrant while in jail in the previous child-*advertiser censored* case. "These charges are the result of the ongoing investigation into Jarred Harrell and his suspected illegal activities," the Sheriff's Office said in a news release. "These new charges are even more serious than the possession of child *advertiser censored* charges he already faces."

Harrell's first court appearance on the new charges is set for Thursday before a judge via closed-circuit TV from the jail, where he's been held since today after being extradited from Meridian, Miss. Harrell appeared briefly this morning before County Judge Richard Townsend on 29 counts of child *advertiser censored* filed Feb. 11 and was ordered held on $1 million bail pending a March 10 arraignment. Harrell was appointed a public defender.

The Times-Union has obtained phone calls between Harrell and his mother Annis Daley from the Lauderdale County (Miss.) Jail made while Harrell was being held prior to his extradition. The calls include statements by Harrell's mother that she can serve as his alibi in the police investigation and she urges him only talk with her or an attorney.

Though Dailey never identified herself in the call, Lauderdale County Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun said he was told she received the call a few days after Harrell’s arrest. At one point in a five minutephone call, Harrell pleads with his mother not to believe any allegations against him. “Honey, I don’t believe anything, trust me. And the thing is, is that I’m your alibi, so I have to be real careful, you know, what I say to anybody,” Dailey said in the call, which was released by the Lauderdale County (Miss.) Sheriff’s Office. She tells Harrell to “just hang in there.”

“We’re making no comments to any of the news. The little girl’s mother [Diena Thompson] is making no comments. And so they’re trying to pull from everything else that they can. And it’s making them look like idiots,” Dailey said. :furious:

Beseler hadn't discussed evidence in that case, but a Times-Union interview with Harrell's father indicates investigators are relying in part on DNA.

UPDATED: Harrell Back In Court, Held Without Bond
Person Of Interest In Somer Thompson Killing Sees Judge 2nd Day

POSTED: Tuesday, February 23, 2010

Jarred Harrell, the man named as a person of interest in the death of 7-year-old Orange Park girl Somer Thompson, saw a Clay County judge for the second day in a row and was ordered held without bond. Harrell, who was extradited from Mississippi on Tuesday to face charges of 29 counts of possessing child *advertiser censored*, is now charged with 12 counts of producing and promoting the sexual performance of a child under 12 and one count of lewd and lascivious molestation of a child under 12.

County Judge Richard Townsend read the new charges to him Thursday morning just after 8 a.m. The Clay County Sheriff's Office said the new charges result from 12 separate charges images of a child and "are even more serious than the possession of child *advertiser censored* charges he already faces."

After appearing Wednesday morning on the child *advertiser censored* charges, a judge set Harrell's bond at $1 million, but he was ordered held without bond on the new charges. Harrell is scheduled to be arraigned on March 10.

Clay County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Mary Justino said Harrell was being kept in solitary confinement, but will be allowed to receive visitors. During his court appearance via closed-circuit television Thursday morning, he was wearing a suicide prevention vest.

Molestation Charges Added On Harrell
Person Of Interest In Somer Thompson Killing Held In Clay County Jail
UPDATED: 6:48 am EST February 25, 2010
<snipped>
The Clay County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday afternoon Harrell is accused of 12 counts that represent 12 separate images of a child. The sheriff's office said these new charges "are even more serious than the possession of child *advertiser censored* charges he already faces" and "do not involve Somer Thompson."

During the brief hearing Wednesday morning, Ann Dugger of the Justice Coalition texted updates to Somer's mother, Diena Thompson, then was to visit the family home to provide details and offer comfort for the new pain each development in the case sparks. "They're waiting on answers for a baby that was not only just brutally murdered, but also thrown in the trash," Dugger told Channel 4's Melanie Lawson.

Rod Buchanan, whose daughter and her fiancé lived with Harrell when he said they discovered child *advertiser censored* on Harrell's computer, said he's relieved Harrell is coming back to Clay County. "It's a relief to see him get back here for the child *advertiser censored* charges," Buchanan said. "We want to see justice served. We don't know that that man's done anything else other than that."

New Charges Filed in Clay Against Person of Interest in Somer Case

More charges have been added against the person of interest in the Somer Thompson case. Today, the Clay County Sheriff's Office added two more charges against Jarred Harrell: 12 counts of production of child *advertiser censored* and molestation of the child involved. Harrell was arrested in Mississippi initially on 29 counts of child *advertiser censored* from Clay County. He was extradited to Clay County and arrived this morning.

Mary Justino with the Clay County Sheriff's Office said these charges are "even more serious than the possession of child *advertiser censored* charges he already faces." The new charges are in no way related to Somer Thompson. Harrell will be back in court tomorrow for a first appearance on these new charges. He is now being held with no bond.

Greg DiFranza, Former Officer, Talks about the Interrogation Process
Created: 2/24/2010 5:51:59 PM
Updated: 2/24/2010 6:29:43 PM
<snipped>
There are still so many unanswered questions surrounding the Somer Thompson case and whether there is a connection to Jarred Harrell. And it will be up to authorities to get those answers. That takes extensive hours of intense police work, though much of that work often pays off in the interrogation room with a person of interest or suspect.

Harrell, the only person of interest in the Somer Thompson murder case, made an early morning appearance in court which was likely followed by a sitdown with Clay County investigators. Greg DiFranza has extensive experience with interrogations. "We're trying to find the truth," said DiFranza regarding the interrogation process.

DiFranza spent 20 years with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. These days, the former officer teaches interrogation skills to law enforcement from all over the country at the University of North Florida's Institute of Police Technology Management. "There's a whole series of things that occur," said DiFranza. DiFranza said going into an interrogation, investigators usually have all the evidence and facts stacked up against a suspect or person of interest. "The questions are designed hopefully based upon the information that you have, not only the information you have on the crime scene or the crime itself, but also this particular individual."

In essence, the interrogation is simply a conversation with a purpose. "What we do in law enforcement is we do that with a much more serious purpose to try to create this case that is based on facts and connect it with this particular individual," said DiFranza. The main technique DiFranza teaches is building a connection with a person of interest like Harrell to keep the conversation and information flowing. "Anybody who's listened to anybody talk before, you know when someone is trying to be deceptive with you or lie to you, and the same is reversed when you're interviewing someone."

The ultimate purpose? Getting an admission or confession, or even determining the person being interrogated was not involved in the crime after all. "Somebody who has absolutely no remorse or no emotion associated with what they did is not going to confess. It's simply not going to happen," said DiFranza.

Hidden world of child *advertiser censored*
2/25/10 Last Update: 3:28 am
<snipped>
Child *advertiser censored* is an act that happens in private, in dark rooms, online. And even after years in law, and in law enforcement, Dale Carson says it's the hardest crime to talk about. "It really is probably one of the most underestimated crime and the worst crime there possibly ever could be," says the former FBI agent. Action News asked him what kind of person looks at sexually explicit images of children. Carson says you wouldn't be able to spot them in a crowd.

According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, offenders are almost always white, single men. They come in all ages, all levels of education, and all levels of income. But Carson says they usually have one thing in common, "We find the offenders typically were all abused." Carson says it's part of the vicious cycle of child abuse. They fixate on children, the thought consumes them. He says it's usually just a matter of time before they go from looking at kiddie *advertiser censored*, to making that fantasy become a reality. [/I]"The crime of child *advertiser censored* and child molestation are inextricably connected."[/I]

He says the crime of child *advertiser censored* is hard to prosecute. In the case of Jarred Harrell, the person of interest in the Somer Thompson murder, it took three months to arrest Harrell after his computer was confiscated.

"The number of submissions for these kind of offenses is so massive that one agency simply can't manage it all," says Carson. If there's no reason to red flag it, he says the case usually has to go to Tallahassee. "Well, I can tell you that Tallahassee's backlog, my understanding is, over a year." Carson says the key to preventing child abuse, of any kind, is education and awareness. The answer lies with you, because he says people who prey on children can't be helped or healed. "You can't fix them. The only thing to do is isolate them from what I'll call proper society."

Jarred Harrell to face new charges
2/24/10 Last Update: 12:19 am
<snipped>
The man being called a person of interest in Somer Thompson's murder is headed to court again Thursday morning. This time for more serious charges. Jarred Harrell is facing 12 counts of producing child *advertiser censored* and molesting that child. He's already being held for 29 counts of possessing child *advertiser censored*. The sheriff's office says these new charges do not involve Somer Thompson.

According to the original arrest warrant obtained by Action News the detective states that Harrell's roommates originally looked into his computer. They said they were quote, "looking for images that Jarred had taken of Jarred's..." and then a black line. The line is blacked out to protect the victim's identity.

The roommates believed that Jarred took pictures of a child. The affidavit goes on to say the roommates found pictures of a nude white female child between the ages of six to eight years old sitting on the floor with her legs spread

Harrell faces molestation, child *advertiser censored* charges
February 25, 2010 - 12:10am
<snipped>
Details such as the sex and age of the child and the time frame were not available in the redacted arrest warrant, which was served on Harrell in jail Wednesday. "These charges are the result of the ongoing investigation into Jarred Harrell and his suspected illegal activities," Justino wrote in an e-mail. "These new charges are even more serious than the possession of child-*advertiser censored* charges he already faces."

Harrell will appear in court on the new charges this morning. The appearance is expected to be the same as Wednesday's, in which Harrell walked handcuffed in front of a closed-circuit TV in the jail after being extradited from his Feb. 11 arrest in Mississippi.

Public Defender Matt Shirk said his office's representation has nothing to do with Somer's case and he would not comment on the initial child-*advertiser censored* charges. "We need to not play the case out in the media," Shirk said. State Attorney Angela Corey could not be reached to comment.

Jarred Harrell appears in Clay court on new child molestation, *advertiser censored* charges
Warrant served on Clay man after he faced a judge in a separate child *advertiser censored* case

Story updated at 8:38 AM on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010
<snipped>
Jarred Harrell appeared before a Clay County judge this morning for the second time in two days, this time on charges of molesting a young child and 12 counts of child *advertiser censored*. County Judge Richard Townsend returned Harrell to the Clay County jail without bail on the charges, lewd and lascivious conduct on a chuld under 12 and producing child *advertiser censored* - which were in an arrest warrant served on Harrell Wednesday a few hours after he faced Townsend on 29 counts of child *advertiser censored*.

One thing that appeared different about Harrell today is that he was wearing a thick smock-like body cover designed to prevent inmates from ripping any clothing they are wearing to commit suicide. Harrell is being held in isolation in the jail. Townsend scheduled arraignments for Harrell on March 10 both cases for next month.

Instead of the traditional stripped jumpsuit most inmates wear, Harrell had on a green protective suit. When questioned by reporters, a sheriff's deputy in court said it is commonly worn by inmates to protect themselves. A representative from the state attorney's office says he has seen the outfit used most often for inmates who are suicidal, although no one would say if this is the case with Harrell.

Harrell only said four words. When Judge Richard Townsend asked Harrell if he had any questions, Harrell replied "No sir." When asked if he understood his rights, Harrell said "Yes sir."

Harrell's arrainment on all charges remains March 10 at 9 a.m.

SoulScape,

If I'm understanding your chart from this am.......The chart showed the added two more charges against JH of 12 counts of production of child *advertiser censored* and molestation of the child involved of under the age of 12....am I correct?????? TIA

:furious: :cry: I have a sick feeling that LE has video of JH molesting a child. :shakehead: Is this seen as possiblity in the chart?

ETA: Reading the doc & it does say....Charges: PRODUCING/PROMOTING A Sexual performance by a minor (under 12) 12COUNTS!!!!! :furious: :shakehead: :( :furious:

He is due back in court 2/25/10 @ 7:45am for the additional charges involving the production of child *advertiser censored* and molestation of a child!!

PDF: Added for reference for my post

My heart goes out to all the victims of molestation! :prayer:

*From your post:
Pisces, the sign of imprisonment, misfortune, fantasy, film, photography, moving pictures rises, with both co-rulers JUPITER & NEPTUNE posited within the 12th House of Imprisonment.

:angel:

Yes, Angel, the chart from yesterday's appearance clearly mirrored the additional charges of Lewd & Lavicious and Produce/Promote heard this morning.

To quote myself:

The bi-wheel shown in my post above once again convincingly links Harrell to the Last Seen, as did chart comparisons (not posted) of Somer's natal and Solar Arc charts against Harrel's natal and Secondary Progressed charts, in light of the Last Seen.

When all lines up in such fashion, and over multiple charts, you might say you have (astrologically) pinned the tail on the donkey.........

Thanks,
Soulscape
