That poor couple. This isn't the first time people have been killed over craigslist ads.
When meeting someone you don't know, it's a good idea to only meet in a public place. And don't let them into your car.

Sheriff Steverson speaks:

Murder with Malice x2 and Armed Robbery x2
Did I hear that last part correct " Gunshot wounds to the head"
I imagine then more than 1x per victim??

Very interesting.

Steverson said although Towns had never been arrested previously for a crime in Telfair County, he had been questioned on several occasions during investigations into other theft-related crimes.

“In the past, in the course of previous investigations, his name came up,” Steverson said. “(Investigators) stopped to question him. But obviously, he doesn’t have any arrest in his record” before this week.

Towns’ family reacted with shock and anger at Tuesday’s developments. Family members were upset that they found out about Towns’ hearing just a few minutes before it happened. They arrived near the conclusion as Selph was ending the hearing.

For now, Steverson said, investigators aren’t looking at charging anyone else.

Several of Towns’ family said they believe he isn’t guilty of the charges.

“This is a bunch of crap,” said Towns’ father, also named Ronnie. “There is something else going on. ... I don’t know if he did it or not. I think someone else is involved. He’s a good kid.”

The elder Towns extended his condolences to the Runion family.

Gwen Towns, the mother of the accused, said, “My son did not do this” as she left the courtroom. Later, while members of the family were talking to Steverson outside his office, she added that “evidence could have been planted” in her son’s trailer.

The family asked Steverson if they could see the evidence, but he told them the case was now with the district attorney’s office.

///

“Although we’re rural and we don’t have the resources that big city police departments do, when we see violent crimes, we pull out all the stops,” he said. “We’ve made progress in this investigation from the beginning.”

Later in the day, Steverson said investigators and prosecutors have a “mountain of evidence” to go through in the case.

It seems the rural "good kid" has a past, but nothing that suggests violence.

Denial is natural. No parent wants to see their son or daughter involved in a crime.

As for "something else is going on" ...perhaps the father should ask that question of his son, not LE?

As for "evidence could have been planted" ...motive? An attempt to punish the individual whom they could never charge with previous crime(s)? Unlikely.

Finally, "mountain of evidence"...it seems a straighforward case, then. LE has him dead-to-rights?

Bluster or fact?

What else is new? If I had a penny every time relatives claim that the suspect was a "good kid..."

Already we know they obviously found something at his trailer per his mom GT.

Just sad to know that one of them had to watch the other be shot. I can't even imagine the terror in those last moments. Makes my heart just ache.
I don't even want to think about it but can't help it. How in the world would that have happened? He had to restrain one of them I'm sure. Just thinking if were my husband and I. Both of us would have gotten out at the same time. Both would have gone bat ***** crazy if the other was hurt.
If he came prepared with something to restrain one of them, that just shows more premeditation to me.

All that was said they were shot with a small caliber Gun. Did not say what type .The only way they could say what type would be if they had it in evidence . Which I don't think they do . IMHO

they have the bodies and the autopsy, would the bullet wounds not indicate what type to some degree?

I think Jay is into drugs, if you're asking me. Sad, sad path. Very destructive. Obviously.

It did a small caliber gun. You can't tell if it was a pistol or rifle just a small caliber .m

RT and family members appeared to feel out of place in the courtroom ... perhaps verifies they are a 'good' family?

I might no longer suspect drugs were involved, not sure yet but the double-murder aspect is difficult to justify for someone simply out to acquire quick cash to support a family. During the 1920s' perhaps, but not in the 21st century.

RT's father and other family appeared to be in deep shock.

Before entering the court, RT claimed, "I didn't do it."

Just as I suspected. I didn't think he was squeaky clean. I just thought he hadn't been caught or he had he wiggled out of it by no hard evidence on him or by way of a decent attorney paid for by his family.

About him saying he didn't do it. I sincerely hope that he is honest with himself if he did commit this crime, that he owns it and is honest with his family.
The Runion family deserve the truth and so do the Towns family.
The truth, no matter how bad it is, is always easier to handle for me than a lie ever will be.

He may have thought he'd gotten away with it in the past and could again.

My heartfelt prayers & condolences to the Runion family. I am glad they did not reduce his bond & kept him in there. Hoping for the maximum penalty the law will allow!

:tyou::tyou:

Good job fellow WSers! Thanks for all the links and good posts! I'm still very sad about this ending. We will learn more information as the days go by, but I feel there will still be unanswered questions. I fear that Jay may claim he did this in self defense, because there is no other plausible explanation.

I heard (listened twice), "Gunshot wounds to the heads." Could have possibly been their instead of the with his twang, but both of those words were plural. Since both words were plural, I interpret it as one each rather than multiple each. And I'm not sure why I think that, other than I think he would have added the word multiple.

Eyes look glazed over. kinda 1/2smirking & 1/2 zombie like.

I was going to say I thought he just looked blank and zombie-like in the little bit of the hearing that I saw, but that is a definite smirk in the photos next to the police vehicle that they showed while the sherriff was talking.

I haven't commented about this case yet, but I want to also extend my sympathies to the family and friends on both sides. What a horrible, horrible shame. I don't think he acted alone, just my gut feeling. I thought it was a good sign that he'd turned himself in, but now with the charges I just don't know. Glad he did, though, so that the family can have justice and closure.

Rest peacefully, Runions. ♥
