I think it looks like he’s turning around as well.

Apparently it would have taken the victim to get from that crosswalk to the place she was found around 10 minutes. The crosswalk photo was at 12:15ish right? So that means she probably got there around 12:25.

The group of young people (two women and a guy) left from the side of the park (Charles Allen and 10th entrance) where she was found around 11:54 ish, so it’s unlikely they saw the actual attack but could have seen the assailant hanging around.

Cane guy was leaving on the other side of the park from where the victim was found around 12:25 so it’s hard to say if he would have seen anything either. He may have seen the person inside the park before the attack. Maybe not.

The guy in the hoodie is also leaving on the other side of the park at 12:43, or about 18 minutes from when KT likely arrived. I’m not sure he could have seen much (other than the killer wandering around but before KT was attacked) because he was still a good ways away from the Charles Allen entrance.

So then we have runner guy at 12:46 ish, or about 20 minutes after KT likely arrived, and by the entrance where she was found. I can’t say for sure, but it’s my hunch that he was turning around (and hence didn’t enter the park) or else he would have maybe saw something warranting calling the police. I think she was likely dead by then because she had probably been there a whole 20 minutes (that is, if she didn’t take any detours on her way from the crosswalk she was last photographed at). 20 minutes just seems like way too long of a time frame for her to have been in the park without being attacked.

I’d also like to mention while the morbid rumors detailing the exact nature of her condition floating around aren’t confirmed, officials have reiterated that this case is pretty “unusual” and nothing like they’ve seen in a while. Words like “mutilated” and “disfigured” have also been used by the press. That leads me to think this wasn’t a stab and run and that it probably took a decent amount of time for the killer to attack both her and the dog in such a gruesome way.

Hence, I doubt the runner happened upon a argument at 12:45 between KT and the killer, said “awkward” and then ran. That would only leave 15 odd minutes before her partner found her for the killer to carry out such a gruesome attack. And again, KT could have been there 20 minutes at that point.

Had he gone in, he also would have stumbled upon the dog only 50 feet in. My unsubstantiated hunch is that the killer was wrapping up around then but had not quite fled from the scene.

Also because it was pretty late, the runner probably was just running on the street and not looking to go through the park (but who knows).
Welcome to Ws Quest701, interesting post, thanks for chiming in!

I am leaning toward a stranger attack. I wonder if this monster concealed a knife, feigned interest in Bowie, asked if he could pet the dog (or didn't ask, just bent down to pet him) and while petting Bowie quickly stabbed him and then moved to attack Katie. Bowie may not have immediately succumbed to his wounds and was able to try and defend Katie. Though, I guess someone she knows could have also committed the crime this way. So, yeah, I guess I'm on the fence about stranger vs someone known to her. JMO.

''I am Katie's mother in Beverly Hills, MI. Even though I am consumed with an indescribable anguish and constant physical pain, I want to thank you and the others who loved and cared for my girl. And to you, Brantly, thank you for your gracious words of remembrance. The abundant outpouring of generosity and kindness and sincere expressions of grief and sorrow mean so much to me not only because of the sheer number of you, but because of the genuine and heartfelt angst and outrage YOU, her friends, her community-the people Katie loved and spent her time with, the people she would have eventually met and become friends with, are reaching out to each other, and in essence touching us, Emma, Katie, her sister and me. Did you know that Katie wasflying into Metro Airport last night to stay with us for a six-day visit? Because of Covid, we haven't been together since Christmas of 2019. This was the first occasion I've been looking forward to in so long. Her sister Ronnie and I have missed her company, and now instead of hugging her hard and laughing at her wit, we are in complete agony. I am so thankful that Katie and I talked frequently andtexted many times during the week, mostly at bedtime. She is my rock, my soul, and I cannot fathom the intensity of her pain or shock in the park late Tuesday night. If I could, I would have taken this horrendous violence on myself without a second's hesitation. Emma called that morning as I was shopping for Sanders chocolate for Katie's pillow (a little joke we share) and for the gift bag I was assembling for Angie, her friend of twenty years up here. She was Katie's escort, picking her up fromthe airport and bringing her home to us. Friday morning we had scheduled a visit to see her dad's favorite uncle, now 95. Katie was excited to see us and to spend time with her friends here. Maybe that is part of what is adding to the tremendous anguish I am suffering. The fact that Katie-a being of incredible radiance, humor and intelligence, along with a committed involvement in the environment, politics and respect for her fellow human and fur-covered neighbors and friends in Atlanta-was struck so violently and cruelly, has incapacitated me to the core. That Katie was strong inside and outand felt in every fiber of her being that she was loved and cherished by Emma, her sister and me, andso many others, and that Bowie was such a courageous knight are the only tiny slivers of light I can take away from this horrific attack on my baby's life. A treasure was stolen and we are grieving together, and I thank YOU, her friends and her community for this effusion of heartfelt solidarity andaffection. Emma and I will need to go down a long road of special counselling to make it back from Hell. We will not move on, but will eventually move forward, holding Katie firmly in our hearts withher love for us demanding we focus on the here and now, not the 28th of Evil. Knowing you all have our backs is everything. THANK YOU ALL-KNOW THAT WE ARE TREMEMDOUSLY GRATEFUL TO EVERY ONE OF YOU WHO IS SPREADING THE GIFT OF COMPASSION AND LIGHT, THE AUTHENTIC ESSENCE of Katherine Linnet Janness-Emma's, Ronnie's and my beloved soul. I will be coming to Atlanta for her memorial in the south (as yet unscheduled); perhaps I can hug some of you then in sorrow and in thanks to you all. Bobbi''

Whether her dog Bowie was friendly or not, I do believe he might have reacted to a menacing person or persons. Dogs are very instinctual. Obviously this was a dangerous person or persons and I wonder if the dog reacted to some cues he picked up. If he growled, he might have been killed for it.

You would think if there was an argument of any sorts that folks over n the apartments across the road would've heard and done something. Though I've watched too many First 48 Atlanta episodes, so not surprised really.

That park looks terrifying during daylight, nevermind at midnight. Though with it being SO open at that area, I can see why others may deem it safe enough.

I reckon Bowie must have been the first to be attacked, maybe bowie felt like the perpetrator was a threat and gave them a warning, in which they retaliated.

So sad isn't it.
I’m curious why you think the park looks terrifying in the daylight. I live by the 12th St entrance and am in the park almost every day. If I worked Katie’s hours and had a dog I’m not sure I would have felt uncomfortable walking in or around the park late at night. Now I would.

Welcome to Ws Shannon0521, thanks, local perspective is always useful here!

Thank you. I hadn't seen the pic of the person in a camo hoodie (or what appears to be) next to a woman's bike with a basket on the front handlebars. The two don't go together.

Also, who wears a hoodie on a July night in Atlanta? That sticks out to me. (On the other hand, his clothes are light in color, so I would think a black hoodie/pants would have been more discreet at hiding blood. Maybe he put clothing on over his "kill suit" when he was done?)

Shouldn't he have left a path of dripping blood showing (at least) the direction he went? I am imagining a madman absolutely covered in blood, a la Dexter. :(

Can you do a search on Strava to locate what runners were in the area at the time?

What exactly necessitates a geofence warrant?

Oh my word, this has actually made me cry. Maybe it’s because I relate to Katie in some ways, but I can totally feel her mom’s heartbreak in every line of this lovely tribute to her daughter. How especially cruel to lose Katie just when her mom was about to be able to hold her in her arms again after this long, sucky, COVID year.

Exactly. I used to live in midtown Atlanta and always felt safe there and especially in the park. Even after I moved (first to an Atlanta suburb, then far north of metro Atlanta) I always felt the park area was a safe area when I'd return for visits.
I had already been avoiding going into Atlanta as much due to the "crime wave" of the past year, but visited the park this summer. Now I'm reluctant to return to even the park area.

Also because it was pretty late, the runner probably was just running on the street and not looking to go through the park (but who knows).

It would help to know the exact time of death, it takes time to kill someone's dog and then stab and disfigure someone.
I'm curious as to why nobody heard or noticed anything, I don't think there would be a lot of people going for a run at midnight, seeing only the 6 possible witnesses rounded up so far. Katherine would've screamed or done something to draw others' attention, the dog would've most probably been barking too unless the killer did something to disable one or both of them.

Disfiguring someone says anger, people do that when they have a deep hatred for someone or something they portray. Your face is personal, it's the one thing unique about you.

I highly doubt ANY of these people are suspects. They might be holding back photos. I could be wrong though. Hm...

Interesting thought, though I highly doubt it. Is stabbing and disfigurement a known form of gang initiation?
I’m new here so I am not sure how to copy links, but if you google “gang initiation stabbing” a lot of cases come up. However I’ve lived in the Atlanta area my entire life and have never heard of a gang related murder this violent and random.

I agree. Also, right after the murder I believe APD or someone close to the case said this isn't something city has seen before so it seems unlikely.

I briefly did when that “marking” report was released by WSBTV but the police said that that story wasn’t credible. I almost wonder if it is in fact credible and the cops simply don’t want to show what they know and debunked it as a rumor?

I just imagine a scenario where the reporter has an inside source and gets leaked info and then in turn, the police, miffed that details of the investigation are leaked, double back and say “that isn’t true!”.

I have this weird feeling that the reporter for the local news station wouldn’t be THAT reckless. Plus it’s not unusual for authorities to intentionally mislead the suspect with conflicting statements to the press with respect to what they know and don’t know. I remember with the Yingying Zhang murder (UIUC), the FBI put up all these missing person billboards after questioning the suspect (who was eventually convicted and is now rotting in jail) so to give him a false sense of relief when in fact they knew it was him and she was dead all along.

I guess we should take what they say at face value though so as to not stoke rumors.

Edit:To clarify, the “marking” story didn’t explicitly link the marking on the victim to anything particular—gang or otherwise. It’s just my speculation that it could have been related to gang activity.

Edit 2: I think it’s far more likely to be a deranged individual acting on his own if I were forced to guess, however.
