How and where did McD get that master key?

Building owner says only he, the other co-owner and the property manager have master keys. There have been two property managers in three years. Was McD friendly with one of those property managers? Maybe have access to their key ring at one time or another?

The kicker is that in one of those news stories I read, it said the apartments he took the condoms from were unlocked? Is that just what McD said? Where did the reporter get that info I wonder?

ETA; The apartments also have security alarms. If he was entering apartments, how would he know if the alarms were set?
I don't know if this has been answered, Knoxy (hehe I like the y on your hat) =) When I lived in a townhouse that was part of a "complex", there was your alarm code and then a "master" code for maintenance, etc. I tracked down my manual for the unit I had online and learned how to change that!!! Perhaps that's what happened here.

Or it could be this..I lived in an apartment complex once that was equipped with alarm systems, but it was up to the renter to contact the alarm company and activate the alarm (and pay the extra fee).

Yep, that's what I did, but the master code was preset from the time of initial installation (or at least when I moved there - and lived there for 6 years. My other neighbors accidentally set theirs off (unmonitored) and sadly, I was able to give them a code to turn it off!!! Scary for them =( I have no idea now. Wondering if McD got nailed on burglary charges because the units usually record a disarm/re-arm, which code was used (even on old systems) of the alarms if they were activated or not. If they wern't, they could still be used with a siren/beeps without alerting a company but can still seem "monitored", but guessing McD would know if they were or not, since the complex was so small.

ETA: The last person to do my activation scared the be-jesus out of me...that was why I got my hands on a manual to change the master code again!!! Creeped me out badly he'd just keep showing up asking to "hang out" and he had programmed my alarm!!! Yikes!!!

I guess, in my head, I just cannot imagine admitting to something insanely embarrassing like that really easily especially if the police didn't know about it and it was irrelevant and happened years ago.

I have to believe some of his bizarre mannerisms and the initial evidence has made them focus on him. If he is innocent then I hope the focus hasn't narrowed so much that the real killer is escaping undetected.
Neither can I, Darcyline. Without knowing the details of the conversation, I can only surmise that he was either caught with indisputable evidence that he stole the condoms, for instance, if they were labelled in some manner, which would be really bizarre; or, the stakes were extremely high, and he was forced to admit to the burglary (and theft of condoms) to refute the allegations of murder. If I picture myself being interrogated by police under suspicion of murder, I'd dig real deep to find anything that would convince them I was innocent, and embarassment would be the least of my concerns.

Yet, how would stealing condoms make him a less likely suspect in LG's murder? I came up with one off-the-cuff scenario the other night. Admittedly, it's lacking and doesn't quite connect all of the dots. The problem is that we don't have even one statement to guide us toward understanding the context in which the admission was made. So, I can't explain why McD would make that exact admission, but I am fairly confident that it came about as a means to deflect the interrogator's focus.

It took quite awhile to find this link in my bookmarks, Darcyline, but I wanted to share it with you and anyone else who is stumped on this issue. I think it will shed some light on the situation. After you read it, and I hope you will, consider the way McD droned on and on for the reporter convincing us how shocked and saddened he is, and how he would've done anything to help LG. Then watch Chief Burns's expression when asked if the POI is cooperating. (I'll look for the link)

The suspect’s goals are to conceal as much information as possible and defend his or her
character. The defensive role assigned to suspects in this setting does not preclude their attempting to move toward
achieving their goals and they may do this in at least three ways...

Third, and of interest to the present study, is to use conversational strategies that deflect attention from their actions
and whereabouts, or deflect attention from their negative characteristics to manage others’ perceptions of them.
The types of deflections noted in my corpus are the following: Topic Changes—the suspect responds to the
investigator’s prompt by offering irrelevant information; Concessions—the suspect concedes that he or she has
committed some violation or other action likely to bring about consequence, but not the violation or action alleged
by the investigator...

The questions about McD start at 10:25.

Here are my remaining questions about this case:

(As everyone else is asking) What does the evidence answer?

Is there significant evidence in any of the apartments that would indicate a crime scene?

Are McD's fingerprints anywhere they shouldn't be (this should be a quick match, not a "wait and see" for forensics).

My fear is that the lack of response from LE is because of a lack of answers. Surely, if McD was the culprit, there would be some evidence tying him by now. There is so much unanswered here that people are just grasping.

Maybe LE got fingerprints back quickly, which led him to admit being in her apartment? They would not have to wait for that info long. But would need more to tie him to anything else, JMO.

Bessie, thank you, I never noticed that about Burns' face. I also want to point out when the reporters ask how well Giddings and McD were acquainted. Burns says well they were neighbors..,very matter of factly.

I also want to ask are there any lawyers on here who could answer this question, is it customary to hold someone for now going on three weeks in jail for a misdemeanor or minor burglary charges? Or does this mean the LE truly have a case against McD and they are just building, building building so there is not another Anthony case? I would think IMO if I ever were arrested for stealing condoms that I would be out of jail in less than a week. I just don't get it, and I do not think the MPD would be being negligent in this arrest as they know McD is a law student and would surely be able to take care of MPD in court if there is wrongdoing on their part.

Just wondering what similarities could possibly be drawn between Lauren's case and this latest "body found in truck of car" and yes that s the headline "truck of car".. Obviously meaning trunk but Good Lord do news sites not have editors or standards anymore??

From anything I can find there is no correlation between the two from different type, sex, and race of victim, crime scene appears to be the car of which the body was in the trunk of, and a full intact body with no parts missing, concealed, or hidden.. I can't find anything remotely similar(course that doesn't mean there is nothing I just have yet to see it)..

IMO just seems like a totally different crime all together in every aspect.. In the comments I know it was remarked about inmates taking over, or committing crimes throughout the area, something along these lines.. Haven't a clue if that's indicative of anything involved in this case but just something I read from a local..

Would be interested to hear whoever it was that stated these cases were similar what exactly they were speaking of that was similar? Currcat, have u heard anything more from the person who mentioned these similarities??

No Smooth - nothing new or "verifiable". She did however confirm that the link I posted was in fact NOT the case she was speaking of...but a "female found about the same time LG was initially reported missing" She reported to me that she had seen it mentioned briefly on WMGT 41, but I have not been able to confirm any of this at all.

My personal opinion is that people are grasping --- but again, I will contiue to find out what I can.

I think that the link I saw (not sure if it's the one you're referring to?) was about a body found in the trunk of a car. Does WMGT 41 have a website? I was wondering if maybe there was a contact person who might keep track of things that were "mentioned briefly" even if the story doesn't make it onto the site. But I would think that it would have been big news?

I have seen that information, but it is a blog, not a news source. Unfortunately, as captivating as it may be, it isn't based on the reported facts. I keep hoping some facts will come in connecting anyone to this case. So far, I haven't seen the dots, just the possible maybe could be's. It worries me, not just because SM may be innocent while being crucified in public, but because my own daughter was living in a house next door to this crime in June of this year, and remains living within a few blocks of this crime. I want the REAL perp caught, not the convenient suspect. My heart breaks for LG's family, and I worry about my child (selfish as it may be), her friends, and all the other Mercer students and Macon residents.
Thanks Psycho Mom I believe I stand corrected. In initial report Macon Telegraph said body was found outside her apartment, this does not preclude it being in a garbage can, and they were probably trying to be sensitive. And it does make a difference, just leaving the body there infers taunting police, making a statement etc. while putting it in garbage on trash day (I don't think it could have been there many hours prior to discovery) infers someone trying to dispose of in convenient manner hoping never to get caught .

Yes PlainJane - the site addy is: http://www.41nbc.com/

I have searched the site since being given the additional information and can find nothing that I think my friend could be referring to. As stated earlier, I think many people are grasping at straws to find some answer to this horrible crime.

chief burns was crime lab director for mpd, and graduated from the fbi command college, I would say he is more than qualified to handle this type of investigation.

<modsnip>

WITH SO MANY RUMORS FLYING AROUND I DO NOT WANT TO ADD TO THEM, JUST WANT TO SEE WHO EVER DID THIS BE CHARGED AND SOON.
I too wonder where the torso was found, in the trash can or next to the tree on the ground?

The following points seem critical to me, for Lauren's case:

1. The reasons for searching SM's apartment again. LE recovered both the bags of "soft" evidence, and the Master Key, during this 2nd search, correct? Well, these items are likely what they went there to search for, and, because of 2 separate and distinct reasons. That is important, I think. Of course, I do wonder if the FBI sent LE a better indication of what to look for, regarding the material that LG's remains were found in, thus the 2nd search.

MACON POLICE CHIEF MIKE BURNS TODAY SAID CORRESPONDENCE WITH THE F-B-I AND OTHER CLUES LED THEM BACK LAST NIGHT TO THE APARTMENT OF GIDDINGS' NEIGHBOR... STEPHEN MCDANIEL.
http://www.13wmaz.com/news/story.aspx?storyid=135549
2. While LE has obviously been searching several locations inside the apartment complex, this link specifically indicates complex possible crime scenes, leading me to think that there is definitely evidence at those locations to go on record as stating such.

THEY CONSIDER SEVERAL LOCATIONS INSIDE GIDDINGS' GEORGIA AVENUE APARTMENT COMPLEX POSSIBLE CRIME SCENES.

http://www.13wmaz.com/news/story.aspx?storyid=135549
“As of now, we are not looking at any other (crime) scene,” Burns said, referring to the apartment complex.
3. If LG was dismembered in her apartment complex, it is likely that there will be forensic evidence in the plumbing. Zahra Baker's case has shown that information to be vital, and while her home had it's own septic system, which LE dug up, I do not know what the procedure would be in Lauren's case, since it is an apartment?

Among the areas checked were apartment plumbing, but Burns wouldn’t elaborate. ETA the link for the plumbing drain traps. Wondering if LE took the plumbing drain trap from the vacant apartment downstairs, also?
Some of the items sent for testing include plumbing drain traps from Giddings’ apartment and the apartment next door to hers where 25-year-old Stephen McDaniel, a fellow May law school graduate, lived.
4. With respect to LE asking if McDaniel had another vehicle. Routine question? Is there video showing him in another vehicle? If he broke into apartments, could he have "borrowed" a vehicle to go somewhere? Was Lauren seen on video in another vehicle? Why was LE asking about another vehicle? I think it's possible that there is a vehicle involved that LE knows about, and they are trying to determine that.

Police have questioned McDaniel for about 20 hours, his mother said.

She said she got a phone call from a police detective about 1 a.m. July 1 -- while police were questioning McDaniel -- and the detective asked whether her son had “a mental problem,” if he was on medication or if he had another vehicle.

Wow, cool. He seems like such a good guy, too (just based on the videos and quotes).

I am pretty sure that the torso was found in a trash bin. I hope that I am not one of the sources of misinformation on this topic, because originally I did think that it was found on the ground. However, since then there have been a number of posts that proved me wrong. Let me know if you want me to link them...they are upthread.

The master key was found on June 30 which was the first search:

Evelyn Spencer, who lives in the apartment beneath McDaniel’s, said that on the evening of June 30, several hours after dismembered remains of Lauren Giddings’ body were found near their streetside apartment building on Georgia Avenue, a Macon police detective came to her door.

Spencer said he informed her that investigators had found a passkey in McDaniel’s apartment.

However, I do not think that the key being found on the first search makes any difference to your other thought provoking points. I completely agree with you that information collected from the first search was shared from the FBI to MPD which gave clues as to what specific things to collect (soft items) on the second search which was conducted on Tuesday, July 12. And the frig was removed from the downstairs apt the following morning, Wed. July 13. So I would say that MPD had a lot of guidance from the FBI as to what to take in this second search.

Regarding your point:

We can conclude that those areas are the three apartments:
Lauren's,
McD's
and the downstairs vacant apt where the frig was removed.

Thank-you, for the correction, Sandstorm, my apologies for the mix-up. I do try to get the facts straight when posting, and this is a good example of why WS requires links for all facts stated as such.

While I completely understand as well as very much sympathize with those concerned(to say the very least)in the community, ESPECIALLY A PARENT OF A DAUGHTER THAT IS LIVING IN THIS EXACT VICINITY.. I can only imagine the waiting but more importantly the just not knowing.. Not knowing if indeed the true perpetrator, attacker, and heinous murderer of Lauren is safely and securely locked away from the community.. Unable to do any further harm to any other innocent citizens.. Or if infact that person is not the heinous murderer but rather only a man charged with two felony burglary charges.. Thus leaving the real perp, heinous murderer free within the community.. Nothing keeping him from harming another innocent citizen just as Lauren was this time 1 month ago..

Truly a paralyzing fear within one's own safe haven of their community and even worse to be in fear for your own flesh and blood child whom you are not able to even protect that is living in this community with this evil still nameless, and faceless thus left to freely roam unassumingly under the guise of just another innocent citizen.. That I fully admit is a bone chilling terror that is very much a reality to some member's here posting on this board.. For you and for your daughter I keep in my prayers just as I do for the Giddings family and the community in and around Macon during this nightmare..

I, too without a single doubt would be in very desperate and dire straits to have answers.. Real answers backed up with stone cold facts and for me as well theories, possibilities, or innuendos offered up wouldn't come close to being good enough.. Sufficient enough for you to rest your head on and feel even one ounce more at ease over.. It isn't good enough when speaking in those terms and I completely agree and would feel no differently if I were in your shoes..

Unfortunately I fear that most likely we will not be given thru statements, links, other much otherwise anything more than basically what we presently have.. We all know the obvious reasons why that is the way in which things usually unfold throughout an investigation and that the top reason is the integrity of the case and ensuring that the criminal not be able to escape prosecution instead procuring a successful conviction on what would be a capital murder charge in this case.. And while we as citizens of this nation rationally and fully understand and support this procedure.. However when personal threat to ourselves or our loved one's is on the line.. Well.. Things just aren't so rational and cut and dry..

As I said my continued prayers for all of Macon and it's surrounding communities, and especially the Giddings family for the duration of this unfolding nightmare..

Psychomom, I whole heartedly understand where you are coming from and can only speculate that I would be feeling much of the same.. While we here at websleuths cannot offer much more than our continued prayers I do hope that In some way you feel comforted(for lack of a better word at this moment)and know that we are all here to help in any way that we can(tho I realize very limited).. We will see this thru and until then continue digging and posting any news whatsoever that may shed light and bring closure to this nightmare..

((((((((HUGS)))))))))

Me too, Knox. I can't imagine a loss such as this. I hope that the coming weeks bring them answers so that they are one day able to receive closure, and peace.
