ATLANTA (AP) — Opening statements are expected next week in Atlanta in the trial of rapper YoungThug who’s accused of co-founding a violent criminal street gang and using his music to promote it.

A Fulton County grand jury indicted YoungThug in May 2022, and more charges were added in a subsequent indictment in August of that year. The second indictment accuses YoungThug and 27 other people of conspiring to violate Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, known as RICO. The rapper is also accused of participation in criminal street gang activity, as well as drug and gun charges.

Prosecutors say YoungThug and two other people co-founded a violent criminal street gang in 2012 called Young Slime Life, or YSL, which they say is associated with the national Bloods gang. The indictment says Young “made YSL a well-known name by referring to it in his songs and on social media.”

What is YSL?​

It depends who you ask.

YSL is Young ’s own record label – Young Slime Life. Artists on his record label are considered part of the “Slime Family,” and a compilation album, “Slime Language 2,” rose to number one on the US charts in April 2021.

Its artists include Gunna and Lil Keed, though several contemporary artists, including Future, Lil Uzi Vert, Playboi Carti, Lil Baby, and Travis Scott have also expressed allegiance to YSL without being contractually signed.

However, according to prosecutors, YSL is actually a “criminal street gang”, which started out in the Cleveland Avenue area of Atlanta and claims affiliation to the national Bloods gang.

According to a sprawling 88-page indictment, the members of YSL use “a variety of identifiers including colours, clothing, tattoos, and hand signs” to show their allegiance to the group.

The most predominant colours used by members of YSL are red for Bloods and green for Slime.

Defence attorneys meanwhile insist that YSL is just a music label.

The state said they were going to whittle down the current indictment due to the number of defendants that have taken deals or been severed. We don't know what that looks like yet. They will include some of the defendants, even if they have taken a plea, if it is applicable to charges current defendants are facing.

I believe so and the no show will get charged. Unless there's a really good reason I think the judge is going to come down really hard on the juror. Rightfully so IMO.
 
The state showed a slide that was ruled against last week and it wasn’t shared with the defense as instructed. The defense motioned for a mistrial. The judge denied the motion.

The state messed up big time…..IMO. The judge laid into the state and is not happy about it.
