Sorry if this was already posted..

Sills says police have examined the backgrounds of family members and everyone who may have had contact with the couple over the last week, even the mailman. The Dermonds had no major health issues, no sign of any mental illness, and had been expected to go to a derby party over the weekend. When they didn't show friends gave it a couple of days and on Tuesday morning at 10 AM they went to the house and discovered Mr. Dermond's body in the garage. He had been moved a few feet and his head had been removed. Shirley Dermond was nowhere to be found.

do any neighbors have security cameras?? and what did they hear? If its night when this occurred, sound travels more at night.

Hot cawfee, Take a look at a satellite map for the address and see how rural and remote the house is. It is lakefront and the lake is very large and interconnected to other waterways. It is a big fishing area and is very common for boats to be on the lake all hours of the day or night.

The area around their house is heavily wooded and even if the neighbors had security cameras, it is unlikely that would capture anything going on at the Dermond's house.

The house is in a guarded community, but there is not actually a gate according to this article: http://www.11alive.com/story/news/local/2014/05/06/putnam-county-possible-abduction/8785443/
Sills described the upscale neighborhood as practically crime free. Although there is a guard house at the main entrance to the community, there is no gate. You can access the property by driving, on foot or by boat. Sheriffs Sills doesn't think it is a random crime but then he's not ruling anything out.

Thanks ClaireNC--- I have alot of questions perking in my brain on the area

Strange, Lake SInclair AND Lake Oconnee is majorly crime free, I never worry aobut my place or about my safety when there. The common death is usually by boat accident

There has been a rise in crime in the Milledgeville lately it seems

Just nothing happens at these lakes, this surely is targeted on the other hand, if it had been a burglary and they targeted because quite elderly, there would have been no decapitation me thinks

and of course, it appears likely this is NOT a burglary which leads me right back around to thinking they were singled out

SO the children and grandchildren have been investigated?????

Just saw this story on CNN and knew to check here as WS'ers would be all over it. Thanks to all for all your post and links.

One thing that is rather unbelievable to me in this day and time is that in an upscale estate like this that neither the Dermond's house or the estate management had security cameras.

I know this is an awful thought but one that has to be explored: how do we know there wasn't some issue and the wife is the one who killed him? In any crime you work from the inside OUT. What was their relationship really like...where are her friends...why the silence in this case? Did they drive do they hv a car, is her car missing? I have so many questions do to the lack of info in this case. Esp as to who saw them last. Was anyone working on their home? Questions like this.

You'd think that at their age, at the end of their years they wouldn't be thinking of murder but yeah people do snap, i"ve heard of cases where the couple had been together for years into their 70's and the husband tried to kill the wife, I'd guess it would have soemthing to do with dementia or alzheimers related in these cases, but I'm not expert JMO

SO on that note, did she possibly have the beginnings of alzheimers? They do get violent

Also, I never would have thought Stephen Mcdaniel could have gotten on over on LG, but.............he did, didnt' look strong enough to me, SO WHO KNOWS! Anythings possible I guess, especially with adrenaline in high gear

IIRC, the "MD" we read about was killed in August 2000.

DID anyone hear they are from NJ, people I work with are talking about that and mob related killing etc, I haven't heard any of that

I agree gf, unless they had them installed. I live in a heavily wooded area, (on top of a mountain). After I had an attempted break in, in December, I had several installed. All my doors and windows are covered with cameras. I wonder why they didn't do this? They were rich. :waitasec:

OK---and questions----first--can dogs scent or track in water and over water????

and second---thinking logically--Shirley was taken by water-its the most accessible--so the boat is (IMO) not flashy, not loud, blends in to what others boaters are using---I'll hazard a guess that the route taken would be North and then boat would be sunken or ditched and then this savage animal will have a car, truck other means of transport at the ready--looks like Rte/IS 20 would be hit first or go thru up to Oconee Nat'l Forest.

Shirley--I am praying for you sweet lady.

as older people they probably did not think of it--too much technology perhaps??? have to remember to set it, the password, etc

"An online record search shows that Mark Dermond was murdered Aug. 30, 2000, in Atlanta in a drug deal gone bad. Troy Major was convicted Nov. 9, 2001, in Mark’s death and sentenced to life imprisonment for malice murder and consecutive terms of 20 years for aggravated assault and five years for possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. His motions for appeal were denied by the state supreme court April 5, 2005, and again July 13, 2006."

WOW, any other druglords in the family, this could be a hit for someone just owing money or having stolen some drug money or not turned it in.

So do I. One being, why didn't they have cameras? I bought the ones that you can watch on your pc. They are affordable.

You know, the only thing that I can thing of, like the Sheriff mentioned that it had been Years since a crime had been committed in this particular area, and maybe people were under the impression that it would continue to be that way, perhaps, and the false security of having a guard perhaps in this community.
A good predictor of the future is past incidents and maybe they just had that sense of security, that things don't happen often??
IMOO.

My first impression on reading over this case is it was "someone sending a message" and this was prior to hearing about the murdered son.

For the record...I feel I am usually wrong.

This is one frightening case.

Absolutely! I use to breed GSD's, and I trained my puppies. I was showing dh one day, how they could smell underwater. He didn't believe me. I took a rock, scratched an X into it, threw it into a rock filled stream, and he brought the correct one back every time! 100% accuracy for mine. All my puppies had this ability. I only tried it with rocks though.

I agree. Plus -- a lot of people just don't want to have to live like that.

True, but better safe than sorry. I love reading your posts TL. You have so much insight. Thank you.:seeya:

I'm with ya, WideOpen. (But, also for the record -- seems I am usually wrong, too.)
