Oh so sad, I drive through there going back and forth from Md and VA, carini's has great pizza by the way. RIP emily & yvonne.

BEA press conference - what we learned

Remi Jouty, the BEA’s director, just concluded a press conference with updates on the crash investigation. This is what we learned:

⁍ BEA has successfully extracted recordings from the cockpit, though Jounty would not provide details about what type of audio was on the recordings.

⁍ The audio recording was found around 5pm on Tuesday and sent to the BEA under seal. Jouty said he is “convinced we will have an audio files we can use”.

⁍ Jouty said it could take days to get “usable” information from the audio file.

⁍ The descent lasted about 10 minutes and the plane hit the mountains at high speed. “The descent is very closely to site of impact itself,” Jounty said.

⁍ The bureau is not yet identifying the pilots, as per BEA policy.

We still do not know why the plane crashed.

Toxic Fumes: German Airline Safety Issues Larger than Thought

http://www.spiegel.de/international...t-german-airlines-prompt-action-a-860044.html

Wow. Just got caught up.

Thanks everyone for all the thoughts and posts on this accident. We are just tossing around theories now until more is known but something like this seems a possibility. I appreciate everyones input.

I have a feeling at least 2 or 3 of these relatively recent incidents must be related to same cause. Just hope investigators figure it out for sure.

This is just so sad.. In the last years we've lost so many people to airplane crashes/disappearances. It further sets my mind in stone that I'll never step foot on an airplane again. May those who lost their lives RIP and that their loved ones can have answers and grieve.

The airline held another press conference. Thanks for all your posts and updates.

Update from press conference - plane delayed due to congestion at Barcelona Airport.

Pilot who flew plane the day before said there were no faults with the aircraft.

Lufthansa say plane was in perfect technical state.

Victims are from 18 different countries. The victims families will be taken to crash site and will be helped financially.

Did i understand correctly that "they" (the French or Germans) said that the initial review of the CVR indicates there are voices right up to the moment of collision? I thought that was what I just heard on CNN.

This thing bears an eerie resemblance to the air bus crash back in 1974 outside Paris. That plane suddenly went down right after reaching cruising altitude. It later developed that air pressure issues caused a cargo hold door to blow open resulting in catastrophic structure failure including loss of control. I just recently watched a documentary about this on YouTube. The aircraft industry changed their design specs as a result and this hasn't happened since. I would expect investigators to be looking st something like that. I doubt terrorism- there hadn't been time for anything like that to have developed on that plane.

Did I hear on CNN that there may have been changes in altitude before the crash? Do they know that or was CNN just theorizing again?

On 7 October 2008, an Airbus A330-303 aircraft, registered VH-QPA and operated as Qantas flight 72, departed Singapore on a scheduled passenger transport service to Perth, Western Australia. While the aircraft was in cruise at 37,000 ft, one of the aircraft's three air data inertial reference units (ADIRUs) started outputting intermittent, incorrect values (spikes) on all flight parameters to other aircraft systems. Two minutes later, in response to spikes in angle of attack (AOA) data, the aircraft's flight control primary computers (FCPCs) commanded the aircraft to pitch down. At least 110 of the 303 passengers and nine of the 12 crew members were injured; 12 of the occupants were seriously injured and another 39 received hospital medical treatment.
Although the FCPC algorithm for processing AOA data was generally very effective, it could not manage a scenario where there were multiple spikes in AOA from one ADIRU that were 1.2 seconds apart. The occurrence was the only known example where this design limitation led to a pitch-down command in over 28 million flight hours on A330/A340 aircraft, and the aircraft manufacturer subsequently redesigned the AOA algorithm to prevent the same type of accident from occurring again.

Investigators have retrieved a usable file from the flight recorder.

Airplanes can fly with the landing gear down just fine. Only way a landing gear issues will effect the plane is on take off or landing.
I have just been talking to one of our ex ATC fellows here. A/C can fly with flaps down and gear down, however there is a maximum extension speed they can do this within. Both create drag which can slow an A/C down. Also if you were going over the maximum speed you run the risk of major damage. He also thought that the non communication was very, very odd given the amount of time they had to communicate I believe around 8 minutes.
The loss of the chip I believe with the FDR - will be problematic as they will not be able retrieve the parameters of flight. This same person worked closely with the RAAF. He thought it was unlikely that a fighter jet was deployed. Apparently they have 0010, 0005, 0001 standby deployment times, therefore this fighter jet would have been deployed on a 0001 minute standby time. This would mean he would be seated in the cockpit canopy open, harness unfastened also being refuelled. As soon as the fuel was disconnected he would need to depart immediately and co-ordinates given whilst in flight to make it to the Germanwings A/C which would be almost impossible. However I guess stranger things have happened.

While alarming, the descent was still gradual enough to suggest the plane was under the control of its navigators.

"The descent is compatible with a plane controlled by pilots," Jouty said. "It is also compatible with a plane controlled by automatic pilot."

"At this point, there is no explanation," he added. "One doesn't imagine that the pilot consciously sends his plane into a mountain."

Seems the passengers would not have been alarmed as the plane descended.

The conspiracy nuts are hard at work- not on here yet, but elsewhere. I am reading posts about Putin shooting the plane down to kill the 3 Americans, one of whom was a defense contractor. I think we are going to find this was a design flaw or maybe poor maintenance. The loss of the windshield could have caused a decompression that would have immobilized the pilots.

I have to wonder, if the plane was under pilot control, why didn't they respond to the 'PULL UP" voice alarm that certainly would have sounded several times?

I am way behind in reading this thread, have been traveling. Just got home. Watched latest news. I may feel differently after reading, but for now, I cannot buy this is an accident. And in France adds to it.

I normally don't buy in to conspiracy theories. But this is too much too many.

Off to read !!!

It's a mystery at this time that does not make sense. At this point if someone said a remote could be built to take control it would not surprise me. jmo idk

Just got an alert on my phone. NY Times reporting that one pilot was locked out of the cockpit at moment of collision. Trying to link from my phone.

Sorry, can't find a link as it just showed up as a breaking news alert on my phone. Trying to find the info elsewhere to verify.
