Cheek swab samples collected from the estranged wife of alleged Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex A. Heuermann match her DNA material found on the remains of some of the homicide victims
[snip]

Her DNA has been confirmed as matching hairs found on the burlap that victims were wrapped in,
a law enforcement source told ABC.
Suspect Rex Heuermann’s estranged wife’s cheek swab matches DNA found on victims: report

Multiple victims placed in that residence, by Rex's wife's DNA with bodies. Rex's hair being found on a body. I think this is good evidence, despite what defense counsel would like us to believe.
It's curious to me how 3 hairs of the wife's were reportedly found on remains while they only found one of RH's. I'd think it would be vice versa. MOO.

The first was a woman who said she and her boyfriend, a New York City police narcotics detective, went to a swingers' club in New York City in the late 1990s — at the time Karen Vergata's body was found — where they would go to switch partners; they found a phone number in the bathroom for a swingers' home in Massapequa Park. She and her boyfriend headed to Long Island but picked up a sex worker in New York, on the way.

That woman, Ray said, had just been released from jail and was hungry and disheveled.

"She came in the car with the two of them," he said."
So I wonder if the bf was James Burke then? Could it be? I believe the commissioner stated they know who it was.

After reading up on some of the available info, I wonder if Rex was a pregnancy fetish guy (aside from the, ya know, killing) and ended the lives of women he might have impregnated.

I actually hate dwelling on this because I'm sure some of the LEOs who deal with Rex are pretty disgusted by him. But, he has rights. They have to watch him, and he gets to gloat.
It is curious that he selected certain people when it's been reported he frequented many, many SWs over the course of his lifespan. Why them? Also wondering if it would have even been possible to know if they had been pregnant from the remains. MOO.

The entire conversation of handwriting began with someone wanting to see an analysis of RH's handwriting!
Forensics of handwriting is an entirely different subject, and does not include the junk science of psychoanalyzing someone via their handwriting.
It wasn't me but I was thinking nobody knows for certain it's his handwriting anyway. Maybe he dictated it to someone else to write. I don't think it's verified evidence of his handwriting imo. Who's to say it even came from RH, especially considering the source.

I would think that Ray/Harrison looked into was Karen Vergata just released from jail when witness and bf picked her up on 2-14-96.
The jail issue, if proved would give credence to swingers claims she was at Rex's house.

Maybe the bf wasn't a NYC narc and just told gf he was while he was Suffolk County connected?
Nothing would be surprising when it comes to Burke & Co.

Long/longer hair gets caught on tape easily.
A vacuum power head's roller is a good example of just how many hairs float around a house.
I've used a razor to cut through the hairs wrapped around the roller.

Quite often I'll find a long/er hair on the scotch tape that I used for wrapping gifts.
I don't remember short hairs.
It's not only their hair they need to worry about when all the forensic results are in.

I agree; Rex wears his hair long enough to be a shedder, too.

I wonder if the scene would have had more hairs from both of them, if there was no effort to avoid leaving it.

I wonder if there is a standard expected number of hairs to shed while moving a body.

MOO

Rex's attorney would jump out to disavow that letter if it were not from Rex, and might even say something shady like "it doesn't even look like his handwriting," if he knew the physical writing was not Rex's IMO.

I personally fall into the handwriting analysis is junk science camp.

Even if I felt it were good science, I already know Rex too well. His searches for crimes on video were too much.

It was that forensic fact that intrigued me today. Maybe the wife had longer hair (and therefore, more inches of it to be deposited - although if the story is accurate, it implies 3 hairs with follicles as opposed to 1 hair broken into pieces.)

I don't know what RH looks like - does he have lots of hair?

Good question - but not that I've ever heard. Time would be one of the main variables. And age of person whose hair is falling out while they're moving the body. Also, did the living person interact with the person who eventually moved their body? For how long?

Thank you for the characterization of RH's hair!

Chris Cuomo with Asa's attorney Bob Macedonio after she appeared at Rex's hearing.

2X Macedonio refers to troubles in the marriage for a long time, troubles he said he won't get into.

Cuomo missed a good opportunity to call Macedonio on why he insists that Asa is attending the trial because all she has is the media's version and wants to hear/see for herself.

Cuomo should have asked Macedonio "did she not read his indictment"?

Short interview.

was this mtdna match or a Nuclear DNAmatch? Mtdna isnt unique, while Nuclear DNA is.
All I know is that it took 4.5 months since she gave the cheek swab for the results to be made public.
Did it take that long or was the release of the info timed for whatever reason?
I would think that on 7-14-23 they went for the fool proof N- DNA

Fortunate you.

The length of the hair doesn't have a relationship with shedding.

I could see long, light-colored hairs being easier to spot than shorter dark hairs.
I think it's reasonable to think the hairs stuck on the burlap were already there when RH took it from his house and/or hair was also in his truck. I don't see him thinking of thorough lint rolling the victims, the burlap, his clothes, the truck etc. to avoid hair transfer.

mtDNA is easier to detect and I personally think that Asa's mtDNA was the first to be identified. She is, after all, from that genetically speaking well sampled island, Iceland, which makes her highly recognizable (geospatial localization by sequence analysis). You can take that sequence and run it against publically (or accessible) databases and get a pretty good idea where the person comes from if - as in this case - the person comes from a country where many people's mtDNA and nuclear DNA have been sequenced. Doubtlessly LE has fancy tools that does this in no time.

Not that I know how many people from Iceland live in the NY area - but I would think that must have helped in the search for a potential suspect (or rather suspect-associated female). But this is just an non-insider's guess, of course.

Anyhow, apparently as techniques have evolved they have also been able to extract nuclear DNA from the hair samples without having access to the roots (where the DNA usually is most prevalent). Which means that they have identified her hairs twice by comparatively disparate methods - a result that is pretty solid I'd say.

So, according to Macedonio -- she has various forms of cancer now. They had already been discussing divorce over the last several years. Even though they discussed divorce for years, she was still sleeping next to him for the past 27 years. She wasn't aware of anything going on in that little home because she was living in a world of her own all these years. If anything had been going on with RH downstairs, she would have known about it. She didn't discuss the case with Rex during her recent visit and Macedonia didn't even ask, frankly. She wasn't in the jurisdiction during the crimes, so therefore, she knows nothing. She only knows what the media has put out there. The only reason John Ray has linked 3 different people to these crimes over the past 12 years is because he has to recoup his costs through identifying someone for a civil case. The media gives Mr Ray way too much attention. And he seems close enough to James Burke to refer to him as Jimmy Burke.
moo.

From the photos of him posted, he seems to have a good head of hair that would fall as much as anyone else's.

Wondering if RH wore a tight fitting hat like a bathing or shower cap when he allegedly committed the crimes, easy to picture him in a costume of some kind, like a wrestler's helmet, preventing hair from falling, speculation.

I still don't understand how a person can be cleared just because they "were out of town at the time of the murders". I know LE has stated she is not a suspect at this time, although how do they determine that she was fully unaware of what was going on? A person can be out of town and still be aware of someone's plan. They could even go out of town so that the plan could be carried out. I'm genuinely curious how LE makes this distinction. MOO.

I was wondering the same thing. If he had his head and body covered.

I have wondered if perhaps RH's strange haircut made wearing a cap or wig easier and protected against hair shedding at a crime scene.
