Grocery shopping tips during Coronavirus quarantine #3

Not grocery-related, but I am absolutely flabbergasted by reports of crowds at local malls  Very few parking spaces left at two major malls - Twelve Oaks in Novi and Somerset Collection in Troy. Shoppers lined up outside stores waiting to be allowed in. I did the Black Friday thing once many years ago and never did it again. I don't understand why people are bound and determined to shop 'til they drop during this pandemic. Even under the strictest health restrictions (masks and social distancing), there are likely to be people who end up sick with COVID after a Black Friday shopping expedition. SMH

That is shocking! It seems like too many people are living their lives like there is no pandemic--- you can count on some of these people being asymptomatic carriers of the virus----

I should also say that I don't like black friday: never did it. I think family should spend those holidays with family relaxing and enjoying each other instead of eating and running to the mall with a bunch of crazed shoppers. Never made much sense to me before the pandemic, and with a pandemmic, it is nutso to do it. JMO

Here is yesterday's WDIV noon news report that I referenced in my post about Black Friday shopping crowds. When some of these folks end up with COVID, I wonder if they will still think that the trip to the mall was worth it

The article describes this as "toned down"-- when actually it is reckless -some of these people will wonder, gee, how did I get the virus???

plums for that tart..... and more milk....to go with your other milk....time for a pudding.
I posted in the Food and Recipes thread too but then remembered, this is the thread we were discussing plums.

So I popped this Plum Tart in the oven before I went to the Beach today. It is tasty but a bit too sweet for us. I will cut the sugar in the topping to 1/2 cup next time. Someone asked if pears would work. I think they would because they’re the same texture as plums.

To accommodate all our allergies, I used gluten free flour, plant butter and egg replacer. I didn’t have Italian Plums either. The regular plums seemed fine and I used 4-5 of them.

I supported Small Business Day today - bought a cute pair of green and purple crystal post style earrings. Perfect for holiday wear, especially for dressing up for the only person you get the spend it with - dear hubby.

I went to the store today very quickly, and was surprised by the number of people who were not wearing masks. I know well enough by now, that clerks can't control or enforce mask wearing in the store. What is with these people? Do they think rules don't apply to them?!

I didn't notice any shortages of items. I am pretty much going once a month now, maybe twice. Remember when we used to pop into the store, just randomly? Yeah, that doesn't happen any more.

COVID burnout. People are tired of wearing masks. They're tired of being cooped up at home. Millions of people traveled over this Thanksgiving weekend despite CDC warnings; they'll be returning to their homes today, and I suspect we'll see an uptick in COVID cases. Families and friends hosted holiday gatherings that probably exceeded the recommended two households. Shoppers swarmed malls and shopping centers on Black Friday despite warnings to avoid crowds. Christmas and New Year's will likely bring more of the same, and I expect we'll see another virus surge well into 2021. Vaccines on the horizon, but widespread distribution is likely to take several months. In a perfect world, everyone would do the right thing to protect themselves and their fellow citizens, but that horse left the barn years ago.

I realized I needed batteries for all of the outdoor Christmas decorations. I jumped online early this morning, placed an order at Home Depot, they texted me within 15 minutes that my order was ready for pickup. I drove right over, did curbside pick up and was home within 45 minute of placing the order. I might not ever go back into the store again. No crowds, no looking around for what I need. Best trip to Home Depot ever!

looks good... you could probably make it with very little crumb "topping"and it would be less sweet...

I LOVE online shopping. Everyone should be doing it!

Finished all but a little of the Tday food today. Enough turkey left for a sandwich tomorrow.

I need to use all the other fruits & veggies the food pantry provided. Now to dig up an eggplant Parmesan recipe or something. Bake off a spaghetti squash and maybe make mashed potatoes. A nice fruit salad too. Lots of apples, oranges, plums, a pear and a can of peaches in juice. Yum.

We finished most of our Thanksgiving food today too. We had chicken instead of turkey, and there was enough meat left to make chicken salad for tomorrow's lunch.

Fruit salad sounds good!

I had to laugh because the recipe says to “season aggressively”!!! Is that because it’s COVID? Anyway, I need to use up the eggplant and the penne pasta. I just happened to buy a small block of mozzarella when cheese was on sale. Stay tuned.

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Season aggressively with salt. Add the rigatoni and cook 3 minutes less than the package directions. Reserve 1/2 cup pasta water and drain.

I made this after I'd seen Katie Lee make it on The Kitchen earlier in the fall. It was delicious! Katie Lee makes a lot of vegan/vegetarian recipes on the show, and I get a lot of good ideas from her.

It turned out great. I added a small onion and 2 tablespoons of minced garlic. I had it for lunch and dinner.

I picked up some gluten free pasta and dairy free mozzarella. My youngest is going to taste the veggie part and see if she likes it. Then we can bake her a dish of it too. She won't have Parmesan cheese but that's ok.

The Amish / Mennonite market, the post office and Walmart - everyone was wearing masks and distancing as best they could. I was the only one in the post office. The market had just opened so was not very busy at 8:15am. Walmart was pretty deserted too. They were counting the customers as they came in. I did find 2 containers of disinfectant wipes - yay!

Here is the gluten free pasta and dairy free cheese version of the eggplant dish. No Parmesan cheese of course. DF cheese doesn’t melt well. She was excited to have it. She liked the plum tart too.

Picked up my produce this morning. Lots of good stuff. Not sure what my kid will do with those peppers. I will make roasted potatoes with rosemary for sure. I’ve never seen broccoli slaw but a stir fry would probably be good.

Lovely! I enjoy seeing your box each pick up. I have used broccoli slaw just like regular slaw with a dressing of Mayo and seasonings. Look up slaw dressing recipes. I also throw in a can of rinsed and drained black beans for protein.
