Picked up my produce this morning. Lots of good stuff. Not sure what my kid will do with those peppers. I will make roasted potatoes with rosemary for sure. I’ve never seen broccoli slaw but a stir fry would probably be good.

have broccoli slaw a lot- use it soon because all the "cuts" make it more perishable. you can make any cole-slaw type recipe, throw it in soup, or if you are tired of how crunchy it is, microwave it and have it with butter, or soy sauce or balsamic vinaigrette.

That is shocking! It seems like too many people are living their lives like there is no pandemic--- you can count on some of these people being asymptomatic carriers of the virus----

news report here of a large restaurant with a large outdoor patio that was chock full of non-masked patrons on the two evenings before Thanksgiving. There are published pictures and most of the people seem to be male and college aged. It was shut down and fined severely and cannot be open after 4pm for 30 days. the restaurant stated that even though they had hired security, they were just "swamped" with "kids returning home" who wanted to meet up with their friends. we have had a mask mandate since forever and restrictive indoor and outdoor dining limits and a 10pm bar curfew since they were allowed to open, and I never see people in stores or other crowded places without masks, so.... pretty egregious.

Mr. Laughing really likes the broccoli slaw, we have even used it in fish tacos.

I wanna know who was standing in the broccoli processing factory, looked at the stem parts left over from preparing the fancy broccoli, and said "HEY let's run those stems through the shredder and bag it! What do we call it so it sells???"

Person is a genius. Sort of like the person who suggested stacking the toilet paper on against the back wall of Wal-Mart so every shopper tromps the entire length of the store.

Possibly evil genius, the second person. JMHO

In a heartbeat, I would be making broccoli soup out of it as I always add in the stems cut up! Yuuummmmmy~

Those yellow peppers are chiles güeros, blonde chiles. Usually not hot, and so good stuffed in some many recipe.

Of them is stuffed with whatever you like: cheese, or shrimp, or fish.
just do a cut along the chile. take out and throw away the seed;
roast the chiles on a pan or, the preferred method, directly over the fire on a gas stove flame.
Once it’s skin is lightly blackened, put them in a plastic bag to “swat”. It will loosen the skin and will be easy too peel it off.
When it’s clean, you can stuff it with whatever thing you fancy, and serve with a salsa and a side of rice.

Thanks! I thought they were those banana peppers you see on sandwiches and nachos. I don’t care for peppers at all. I am ok with the flavor of some if it is diced super fine and disguised in a dish. Even then I usually pick them out. I think I’m going to dice them and freeze them. That way someone will use them in something.

I put that bag in the freezer because we weren’t going to be able to use it right away. It was already a week past the sell date but still looked fine. My daughter can’t have dairy so actually making a slaw is not an option. We could do a stir fry or soup tho. I have never used shredded broccoli so it will be interesting.

I use vegan Mayo for our slaw! There are a few brands. Veganese is one. No dairy or egg and very yummy.

DH and I made our weekly trip to Nino's yesterday. Store seemed unusually busy for a Friday afternoon. I was wearing sweats and my fleecy Red Wings jacket and felt like I was going to pass out. We got everything on my list and shouldn't need staples for a couple of weeks. I got chicken livers and cream cheese and will make pate today. DH said that he will probably go swimming again so he's not here while I'm cooking the stinky chicken livers :D

DH is officially retiring next Thursday after 42 years in steel sales. There won't be a retirement party at the office, and I won't be able to host one, either. We'd like to have a celebratory dinner, but our Governor is probably going to extend the 3-week "pause", so it's doubtful that we will be able to go to our favorite restaurant. We got a 4# Bell & Evans chicken that I will roast a la Ina Garten with rosemary roasted Yukon golds, and a green veggie that DH will pick up next week when he gets a nice bottle of bubbly. After our nice meal on Thursday, DH will start the prep for his colonoscopy on December 14. He has a list of foods to eliminate in the days prior to the procedure.

Happy retirement to your hubby!!

Congratulations to your and husband on his upcoming retirement. He will enjoy a delicious "last meal" and then, ugh, colonoscopy prep! I really hate that. I hope he gets a good result from the exam.

I love Ina Garten's perfect roast chicken recipe--that's what I made on Thanksgiving.

This is DH's "routine" colonoscopy after 10 years. He's not having any issues, so procedure should go smoothly. We are both amazed at how the preparation for a colonoscopy has changed over the years since we had our first ones at age 50.

My December Food Network Magazine arrived last week. I've resisted the temptation to read it because I'll need something to keep me occupied while I'm waiting for DH at the outpatient facility.

Produce pick ups this week were interesting.

Tuesday I went to the church but unfortunately most of the items were unusable. I was able to salvage some tomatoes, 2 cucumbers, 4 eggplants, 2 apples, some onions, gallon of milk and a little bottle of drinkable yogurt - mango flavored. (I’m allergic to mangoes.) I had to toss out a pack of chicken hotdogs and a chicken pot pie filling mix that were both weeks out of date. If they were frozen, I think they would have been ok to use. But they were completely thawed. There were 4-5 cucumbers, some peppers and a few tomatoes that were too far gone.

I try not to go but once a week but I couldn’t keep us fed on what was salvageable. So I went to the community center pick up this morning. What a difference! I only had to toss a broken egg and a couple beat up tomatoes. Everything else will get eaten. They gave me 4 chicken leg quarters, another gallon of milk and more drinkable yogurts. I’m texting friends now to share all this milk & yogurt.

I need to text my cousin who grows garlic and get some tips!

When I was a stay at home mom in the 90s I had a subscription to Cooking Light magazine. My friends each had a subscription to a different cooking magazine. We each would copy from our magazines the recipes we liked. 10 cents a page at the library. Then we would pass the magazines around and do the same thing the next month. I have so many good recipes from over the years.

https://nypost.com/2020/12/10/bride-to-be-dies-from-covid-19-days-after-she-was-set-to-wed/

29 year old bride-to-be dies from Covid days after she was set to wed:
A bride to be in Texas died from the virus. Stephanie Lynn Smith, age 29 had been looking forward to marrying her fiance on November 13- Before the wedding she felt
sick with what she believed was shingles, which she had come down with on an earlier occasion. She was stressing about the wedding said her mother- she actually went to a
physician who gave her medication for Shingles. However, her condition got worse
and her fiance brought her to the hospital where she was diagnosed with Covid 19 and pnemonia and SENT HOME

NOW HERE IS WHERE HER CARE DIVERTS FROM GIULIANI AND OTHER "CELEBRITIES"

SHE WAS SENT HOME ONLY TO RETURN THE NEXT DAY AS HER OXYGEN LEVELS PLUMMETED. She spent her wedding day in the hospital and she passed away on November 18.

So regular people get sent home- favored people get preferred treatment -- perhaps
had she been admitted and treated with Regeneron she may well have survived. Perhaps there are other treatments that could have been utilized, if not
Regeneron. Instead they sent this young woman home with a diagnosis of Covid.
I have no doubt this scenario is repeated all over the country every single day and it is
disgusting. You can see why some ethicists are having a problem with some people getting favored treatment and others are shown the door. By the way, I understand why the president would get the best treatment on the planet: after that, i have no idea why Christie, Guiliani or Ben Carson would get favored treatment: it isn't fair.

Soup’s on! Took whatever veggies I had on hand, chopped them up, poured them into 2 cartons of veggie broth. Then when the veggies were about soft, I added 1 cup of rice. Let it cook until the rice is soft.
