As a meat eater, I don't understand the appeal of eating wild animals either. I ate a fair amount of venison when I was young and I don't remember it tasting partially good. If it is a good meat to eat, then I have to wonder why ranchers aren't raising it, and selling it in supermarkets.

That said I would prefer that all of our food be raised heather, without chemicals.

Mad Cowboy by Howard Lyman is a great book. A cattle rancher that turned vegan. He was sued along with Oprah Winfrey by the Cattleman’s assoc for food disparagement.. There are laws now and people cannot go video the lives of animals in livestock areas.

Membership in Gun Groups Is Spiking After the Florida Shooting

http://time.com/5176471/national-rifle-association-membership-florida-shooting/

“Gun owners themselves weren’t being demonized [after Las Vegas]” Turner explained. “But after the Florida shooting, there was a definite push to demonize honest gun owners and to demonize the NRA. And I think that’s what’s provoked their response.”

Gun rights activists said the membership increase is also fueled by a feeling that public rebukes such as corporations ending partnerships with the NRA are simply publicity stunts. “There is no one. NO ONE. Who joins the NRA for a discount on a rental car,” Cleta Mitchell, an NRA member and former Oklahoma state lawmaker who sat on the NRA’s board from 2002 to 2013, said in an email. She was referring to Hertz ending its discount program for NRA members.

When I was young I was rabidly against hunting, because cruelty and all that. Then I slowly realised (and bluedivergirl higher in the thread exprimed it very well) that animals raised for meat live a life of suffering. Animals hunted for meat have a fulfilling life before being killed. My only concern now is when animals are only wounded and crawl away to die.

Also, as many posters said, it's a source of cheap and healthy proteins for people who could not afford them otherwise.

Then, there is the fact that there is dearth of natural predators for deers and rabbits and the like, at least in Europe.

I suppose that does happen, but I don't see ranch animals living a life of suffering. Especially the cows I see, don't look like they have a care in the world. They just eat and get fat. They seem to have it a lot better then dear, which are getting shot at all the time. The second point is why I'm personally against hunting. I don't think hunting is a humane way of killing an animal.

That’s not how it is for most cattle. Factory farming is basically torture all around. If you are seeing dairy cows they are forced to lactate and their babies are taken away almost immediately. Most of them will die.

If people treated their pets the way farmers treat goats, chickens, pigs, etc., they would be arrested. I don’t understand the difference.

Baby Steps for Gun Reform
If there are any new restrictions on firearms, expect them to be minor.

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2018/03/gun-reform-congress/554603/

If anything moves on the gun front, expect it to be minor. The measure widely seen as having the best chance at passage aims to improve background checks for gun purchases. But to be clear: Congress is not looking to close the so-called gun-show loophole in a move toward universal background checks. (This is a reform that polls indicate the overwhelming majority of Americans support. ) The proposal currently under discussion merely seeks to improve reporting to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. Now, finding a way to keep the NICS database more up to date would be a useful step, but a baby step at best.

The then-16-year-old shot a teacher while being tackled by Columbia High School assistant principal John Sawchuk. There were no fatalities in the incident, and Romano is currently serving a 20-year sentence.

Now 30 and behind bars at Coxsackie Correctional Facility, Romano wrote a letter to local-area paper the Times Union reflecting on the shooting.

South Florida Congresswoman Discusses Gun Safety Reform With Students, Officials & Faith Leaders

http://wlrn.org/post/south-florida-...afety-reform-students-officials-faith-leaders

The attendees expressed frustration at the Florida Senate's rejection of an assault weapons ban on Saturday. Lawmakers instead passed a measure Monday to arm some teachers.

“I should not have to arm my teachers in order to get funding for mental health. That’s blackmail,” said Broward County School Board Member Robin Bartleman.

Mayors from Pembroke Pines, Plantation, Aventura and Dania Beach joined the discussion, as well as faith and community leaders.

[h=3]Senate removes ‘vast majority’ of teachers from plan to arm school personnel[/h]
ALLAHASSEE After a lengthy and emotional debate, the Florida Senate narrowly approved a bill to put millions of dollars of state money into school safety programs in response to the Parkland shooting, attempting to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill while arming school officials with a first-in-the-nation optional program for school districts.

As always it is so watered down that it will accomplish nothing, except waste a lot of money.

Parkland Victims’ Families Push For ‘Layers Of Security’ At Schools

http://miami.cbslocal.com/2018/03/0...s-take-up-gun-control-with-wasserman-schultz/

“We need layers, layers, and layers of security measures in these schools that will make them safer,” said Lori Alhadeff whose 14-year-old daughter, Alyssa, was murdered.

The parents as a group refused to oppose the Florida measure as now written, that would allow school teachers to be trained and carry weapons, and does not ban assault rifles.

“We accept the fact that right now it is the minimally acceptable effort that we can get passed in Florida,” said Gutenberg.

MU poll: Support for tighter gun control laws remain high

http://www.wisn.com/article/mu-poll-shows-trump-approval-rating-holding-steady-in-state/19093504

Milwaukee support for tighter gun control laws remained high after the shooting at Parkland High School in Florida that left 17 dead.

Similar to past polls, 81 percent support background checks on private gun sales, including at gun shows, and 56 percent support a ban on assault-style weapons. (snip)

The poll surveyed 800 registered Milwaukee voters between Feb. 25 and Thursday and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.

The US spends less than one penny on gun violence research for every person shot dead in America — and that's intentional

http://www.businessinsider.com/gun-...nds-on-gun-violence-research-2018-3?r=UK&IR=T

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) used to collect data on gun ownership and use on a state-by-state level.

But the
Dickey Amendment, pushed by the National Rifle Association (NRA) and passed by Congress in 1996, essentially zeroed-out the CDC's gun violence research budget. It also now forbids the CDC from "advocating or promoting gun control."

Since 2003, when the Tiahrt Amendment was passed, the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has also been barred from releasing any gun trace data it collects.

That would be invaluable information for researchers studying how criminals buy their weapons, and how guns travel across state lines. The
NRA claims that Tiahrt protects gun dealers from lawsuits, but mayors and police departments who are trying to crack down on illegal guns want the amendment scrapped.

It's mostly illegal, in the United States anyway, with some exceptions, depending on the state I believe.

I love deer, elk, and antelope meat. My kids prefer it over beef, and so do I. When it's one of my daughter's birthdays or some other special occasion and we ask the kids what they want for dinner, they always say "deer steaks!"

Illinois Gun Show Bans AR-15 And Bump Stock Sales After Protesters Speak Out

The popular sales events are a next-level battleground in the gun fight.

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/illinois-gun-show-bans-ar-15-sales_us_5a9dc7f7e4b089ec353defd1

A monthly Illinois gun show may have become the first in the nation to ban sales of AR-15 rifles following complaints in the wake of the deadly Parkland, Florida, school shooting.

Vendors were told they could not sell the AR-15 or any other assault-style rifles, or the bump stocks that boost the firepower of such weapons, CBS2-TV in Chicago reported. Organizers of the gun show also halted a raffle offering an AR-15 as a prize. (snip)

The decision by the Pioneer Valley Sportsman’s Association was in response to complaints following the Feb. 14 shooting in which a gunman with an AR-15 killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

“We did the ban to try to calm the situation down and show them we are willing to work with” the protesters, Frank Cesare of the sportsman’s group told The Washington Post. He said the ban will remain in effect for the April show, and the organization will decide later on future shows depending on the “mood,” the Post reported.

Bumble Dating App Bans Gun Images After Mass Shootings

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/05/business/bumble-dating-app-gun-images.html

The company joins a long list of businesses that have cut ties with the National Rifle Association or sought to clarify their relationship with the industry since a deadly shooting in Florida last month.

Some 5,000 moderators around the world will scour new and existing profiles and remove gun-related content, said Whitney Wolfe Herd, Bumble’s founder and chief executive.

Bumble will not censor images that appear in users’ Instagram feeds, which can be integrated into Bumble profiles.

Where I live in FL, turkey vultures usually take care of the roadkill.

Nothing like seeing a group of turkey vultures dining on a roadkill feral adult hog. Once saw that by River Rd in Venice. But there are feral hogs in that area, right by Jelks Preserve. During our first visit to that preserve I saw a feral hog tusk laying on the ground and thought, 'What on earth?!...' It's a very pretty area, right on the Myakka River.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=40&v=oaa3f4gfs3o

That is a beautiful area.I love eating at Sharky's on the pier! I've been to the Myakka park. I've been visiting Fla since I was a child. I'm a bit concerned about the Boas. My favorite areas are on the gulf side, from Siesta Key, down to Naples (another beautiful pier) . We were in Corskrew one year, and something big and tannish, lept out of the growth, about 30' from the walkway, and grabbed a large bird from its perch. There were feathers flying, a couple of squawks, and then all we heard was bones cracking, a couple snarling noises, and then other sounds of feasting. It was so fast that we didn't see it clearly. We were a bit stunned at first, to see that, and figured while it was busy, we should mosey on down the walkway. We were told by one of the park folks that it was probably a Florida Panther.

From your link

"Support staff who provide some instructional work" sounds like the paraprofessional aides?

Teacher's aides?!

Subs? ... Coaches?! Assistant coaches?

My imagination is spinning just thinking about my HS driver’s ed teacher aka assistant tennis coach aka Coach Feet-Desk with a firearm. If it’s concealed, he’ll have to wear something other than those maroon and white nylon track shorts.

Hmm. I understand the habit... I maybe have paused while handwriting something, waiting for the red squiggly line to tell me I'd misspelled a word.

Your mouse hand had some muscle memory going on, but many video games use controllers that don't look like the thing it's representing. Some do, which is how I just KNOW if given the chance I'd totally ROCK "Helter Skelter" on a real guitar, because I'm really good at it on "Rock Band Beatles." But, alas, the controller is only shaped like a guitar, and is not actually using the same muscles and fine motor skills as a guitar, so it's not generalizable like that.

I'm of the belief that media of any kind (books, movies, music, TV, video games) can't cause a person to do something they wouldn't otherwise do. Media likely contributes to other aspects of life and a person, like a predisposition or a mental illness.

In short, I can see media being a factor, but not an outright cause, for violent behavior.

I've mentioned it before, but has anyone here read the book, "The Neon Bible," which was published posthumously? It's not about a school shooting, but violence by youths. It's a quick read and it was written in the fifties, but offers a surprisingly modern perspective.

Anyway, blah blah blah

BBM

I don't think that those things directly cause someone to do those things.

However, I do think that repeated exposure, day after day, for hours on end, can have an impact, on mood, and desensitization. If a kid is predisposed to be drawn to this type of media, 24/7, then, it seems it would amp up, something already there. Kind of like any other person, like a person drawn to gambling, shouldn't go to a casino. Kids who show certain traits, probably should be geared toward the NFL or NBA video games, or maybe Subnautica (it even has a VR option), maybe steer away from Horrorcore music too. It can't hurt.

10 Most Violent Video Games of 2017 and Age Appropriate Options

The impact of violent media on kids is still being studied -- especially as game violence jumps from the screen to virtual reality. But research shows that heavy exposure to violent media is associated with aggressive behavior, desensitization, and violent thoughts.

Many parents whose kids ask for these games (or set up a line of credit on game sites such as Steam) may know that the games are violent, but not the specific kinds of violence they contain. Here's where you can find out. Below, we've gathered 10 of the most extreme titles to come out this year. A lot of them are well-designed gameplay experiences, but they're definitely not for kids. The thing is, instead of saying no all the time, we think you'll be more successful if you say, "Wait," and offer kids alternatives in the same genre that are a little less violent and more age-appropriate. Note that we offer two alternatives for each game, one for younger players and one for older players.
