This is a good overview of www.tomnod.com.

See link: http://imgur.com/t/tomnod/7SJPV

If someone of authority is able to recommend a new project over a 150 mile diameter circle around the search region I can image several thousand contributors to the effort.

Sounds great like a great idea. Have you tried suggesting directly to the search headquarters? Some info here:

when did the dogs come across the area they will be digging tomm? must have been getting dark since they didn't did today? gosh. as a mother, i think I'd be out there digging. I wouldn't be able to stand it. Praying for her family.

where is the area? is near the convenient store that he was spotted at that is near Gilamon's?

They haven't released info on what area it is. No info on when the dogs indicated a possibility, but I would assume it was today? I can't imagine they would sit on a lead like this for too long.

We dont really know much about it ,other then they got an "indication" from a K-9 and are going to be digging tomorrow.

Yes exactly my feelings Foxfire. Thank you! To me it just makes total sense when you're searching for a needle in a haystack you need all the eyes you can get. And I can understand the feeling in the community of wanting to help all they can. I wish there was something I could do as well. Just drives me crazy.

GeeButtersnaps, there many contributions that concerned citizens/volunteers can make during search efforts, or as members of a SAR. The boots on the ground/ground searchers, K9 handlers, etc., are just a few of the many efforts that go into a successful search.. The searchers have to eat, or may need first aid<nurses/EMTs>, researchers, spread awareness, and many other support services, etc.. Volunteers are needed to support the search in many ways and their never seems to be enough help to go around.. After a person goes missing in a community, depending on the awareness created and community participation. The missing person family of advocates, searchers, sleuthers, mp SAR orgs., etc., grow exponentially after many M/M persons cases are solved.

Example: October 18, 2014
http://www.gwinnettdailypost.com/news/2014/oct/16/ella8217s-run-fundraiser-for-right-to-hike-set/
It has been nearly seven years since Buford resident Meredith Hope Emerson went missing while hiking in Blairsville, Ga. on New Year’s Day 2008. Emerson, an avid outdoors woman, was found murdered several days later, but her memory lives on through the Right to Hike organization founded in her honor.

#This Saturday, the nonprofit organization will host the seventh annual Ella’s Run to raise funds towards its goal of promoting hiking safety. Proceeds from the event will be used to provide emergency phone units on trail systems and in parks to assist those in distress.

This is my first post.

With respect to searching terrain and avoiding contaminating evidence by large crowds.

If someone has influence to suggest the use of satellite imagery and crowd sourcing site tomnod it may be useful to the searchers.

This was done in the case of the missing Malaysia Airline flight this past year. The crowd sourcing site is www.tomnod.com.

See the reference:
http://www.tomnod.com/campaign/mh370_indian_ocean

I would like to see this used as a routine for other extended investigations as a routine.

Welcome and I seem to remember TOMNOD being used to search for a small plane downed here in the states. It is a wonderful resource. Would you happen to know offhand if disturbed earth would be discernable with this technology?

If someone is able to submit this link to a search team leader it may be useful to them.

The search team would need to assign the objects they are interested in detecting as well as coordinate the feedback to tomnod project.

As I review the site, www.tomnod.com, a project request has a criteria that objects need to be "larger than a small group of people". For those not familiar with the tomnod format, the crowd sourced volunteer is asked to tag each object detected with a corresponding icon representation of that object. If a set of tire tracks are observed, then the icon would be a set of tire tracks.

This is a summary of the criteria from the site.

Tomnod's Complimentary SAR Service Statement *

I agree to Tomnod's Complimentary SAR Service Statement

I understand that my SAR application has only been accepted once a contract has been signed and
countersigned

Only those who meet the following criteria will be considered. *

Check the box if your answer is "yes."

Are you directly involved with the Search and Rescue mission?
Can you provide precise coordinates (within 20km) for the search area?
Can you provide ground information (i.e. videos, pictures and/or statements) for our global online
community?
Is the object of interest larger than a small group of people?

See the form for details

I've always wondered about that. :welcome::welcome4::welcome5:

Thanks Emma Rose,

I do not know. The only way to become familiar with the tool is to register and join a search effort to test the magnification range of a sample image. It might be that a higher magnified image can be arranged to allow to detect a small disturbed area of ground or clothing item.

How does this suggestion get into the hands of those directing the search ?

The www.tomnod.com site has several Search And Rescue campaigns that involve mostly craft that would relate directly to the group of people the search is for.

It would depend on the area that is disturbed. Object sizes comparable to a shoe may not be visible however a set of disturbed brush and ground area may be identified as suspicious if it is also correlated with a possible path that was taken to arrive at the spot.

Reflectivity and shadows will vary depending on the time of day the image is taken. The review of the site, in the 2nd reply, indicates the images are updated once a week.

First time poster, been reading forums for awhile. I haven't seen anything on whether LE has searched UVA hospital and/or a work locker belonging to JM.

Has anyone heard whether such a search was conducted? I would think that he would have had a locker at the hospital to keep personal items while working.

Welcome, Noony! I would think they have already searched there, but I really don't know for sure.

RE Tomnod- if I am not mistaken, forgive me I can not recall where, I had read someone had checked with them, and their response were they were not able to be useful in this type of search

Read on the Help Find Hannah Graham facebook page that 200 people signed within 4 hrs.

Thanks for sharing this. How amazing! That's an average of almost one person per minute! So inspiring --people want desperately to help. It's almost as if they rose up in unison and said, "Enough! Hannah-- we will find you!" (And a special thanks to those here who've said they've registered!)

Volunteers needed in search for Hannah Graham
By Catherine Rogers

http://wavy.com/2014/10/18/volunteers-needed-in-search-for-hannah-graham/

RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) — The Virginia Department of Emergency Management is seeking volunteers to help search for Hannah Graham on Sunday.

Organized searches will start at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Walnut Creek Park in Albemarle County and end around 4 p.m. They need about 200 volunteers — if you want to participate, you have to be at least 18-years-old and you need to register online at www.hikeforhannah.brmrg.org.

If you’re selected to help the search, you’ll be hiking off-trail, through dense vegetation and brush. So, you probably want to wear long pants, long sleeves and sturdy shoes. Search volunteers should also bring the following:

Safety vest or blaze orange shirt, jacket or hat to increase visibility (search will be conducted adjacent to areas where hunting may take place)
Small backpack to carry at least 2 quarts of water and food/personal items
Lunch and snacks for the day (food will not be provided)
Bug repellant (ticks are prominent in this area)
Small, personal first aid kit (recommended)
Leather work gloves
Another mass search for Graham was held the weekend of Sept. 20-21. Approximately 1,250 community volunteers covered areas within the city of Charlottesville.

Walnut Creek Park
4250 Walnut Creek Road
North Garden

Not sure it's true, a facebook comment, as of midnight the call was still out according to the article below.

Just clicked the link for registering for this Sunday's search and it says the limit has been met. So sounds like 200 people got right on it! A big "thank you" to all the volunteers, LE and SAR folks who are so generously giving their time and energy. May you be successful in bringing Hannah home!
