Very interesting.
thanks, Kapua. I remember those questions. With a search today I found that MPD used them to look for Mo after much time had passed. Perhaps the department did not have them in early 2014 --unfortunate. Found a post on FCS page saying that MS&R was training a dog on the mainland and it would take 4 months.I am reasonably certain that MPD did not bring in cadaver dogs. I inquired early on because I thought, given the East Maui terrain, that these specially trained dogs would have been extremely helpful.
Agree with both of you that odor dissipates once the source of the odor is removed.
Last night when looking for latest Maui News without paywall, I found an article I had missed back in Loo's testimony, where he said they searched Steven's living area and were looking specifically for body parts. Also searched his truck. But he gave them the OK, so he must have been confident they would not find what they sought. Also they drove with him out to the famous non-existent breakdown spot, in late Feb. this all happened.
I would want to sell that place too.
He lost it? I missed that information. My exact thought when I first heard the GF had lost the place. Still my thought now.

Thanks for all that!Me, too. I notice that it's been on the market for 5 1/2 months. Nice layout and floor plan in both the main dwelling and 'ohana cottage.
I again did some research on cadaver dogs. Found this, for openers:
https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2015/sep/08/cadaver-dogs-trained-to-smell-death
"Specifically, the dogs are trained to smell decomposition, which means they can locate body parts, tissue, blood and bone. They can also detect residue scents, meaning they can tell if a body has been in a place, even if it’s not there any more."
And this:

It would've been nice to have a K9 assistant, but Life360 was the best search asset in this case. Too bad the police didn't jump on that lead Tuesday the 11th.
I wonder if he used bleach when cleaning his vehicle. I wonder if they checked his shoes. There may have been traces of blood on the soles of his shoes as well.
Yeah, I think you're onto something, Nikki. Now was it 20 yards or 20 feet? I can't access the article any more, and it's not on the app. We can assume I imagine that the jawbone etc.. was found in that grid.Want to sell and have to sell are two very different things.
I wondered if Charli wasn't buried somewhere beyond that 20x20 ft space mentioned by Bonacorsi. It seems that as Pua agrees, once the source is no longer present, the smell wouldn't be detectable by the human nose. If Bonacorsi smelled it a week later, then Charli's remains must be nearby. She also said "rotting" as in present tense. Not to break down every word of her testimony because we all have faux pas but, she didn't say "rotted or rotten", and if taken literally then there must be remains nearby. Otherwise SC retrieved them and dumped them at the drag spot on Monday or Tuesday.
Thanks for all that!
Re the marketing time, that's fairly normal for Hawai'i property if it's not at some great price. It used to take about a year to sell, faster now. This is spec of course, without knowing the property, but some ohana apartments (many) are not legal second units. Several years back, banks stopped lending on properties here with permit issues, meaning it may take an all cash buyer. Of course, the notoriety may be off-putting, not saying it isn't.
I thought that FTL said that Steven had his truck detailed, didn't do it himself. He might have done some preliminary cleaning of course. Good point about the shoes. By the time they really searched, it had been 2-3 weeks.

Thanks! Smart.Yards. I saved the article.
Would seem to indicate his truck did play a part in it or maybe just worried he had transferred something. FTL said he never cleaned anything as a rule.Had a beat up old battery falling out never been washed broken back window truck detailed huh?
From the hashtags, it sounds like she wants to separate herself from things that don't let her steer her own life. Even if her testimony is nothing startling, the island community is small and this will always taint her in some way even with no fault. Plus she is very young and moving is no biggie for a free spirit type.
Her aunt actively contributes Kim's Facebook and Cassie is a friend. She's not going to support Steven. The question is whether she knows anything useful, but one hopes she at least knows of some irregular time frames on his part and perhaps can testify that he was not really all right with the baby. The more evidence that he was not "coming around" to Charli's plan, the better. There's a solid case for that already. The jury needs to be 100% that he did not want the child to be born.
Another working timeline, with questions for you guys:
Sunday night, Feb. 9 -- murder and Nala left in Nahiku
Monday, 2/10 -- Steven works (until 3 PM) and details or has detailed his truck. No police report out. He is free of scrutiny that afternoon/evening.
Did he post online?
Tuesday, 2/11 -- SC woke by police, works, family comes to Mana, goes to search after 3. Approx one hour of light out there in Feb. after hour drive time. SC shows "the spot" to family. As Brooke and Phaedra leave to drive back, they spot SC driving out of Nua'ailua. He says already checked. When was the first time he was seen there?
SC is with Adam, and the call comes about Nala? Adam and Fiona (?) go get Nala? SC says he is tired and goes home?
Wednesday, 2/12 -- Search goes on ... SC gives police interviews in AM in Wailuku. SC does not search with family. 4Runner found near dusk at Peahi. Q: How long has it been there?
Thursday, 2/13 -- Loo called to Kaumahina for found bloody jeans, and to MM 19+ guardrail for drag marks?
SC gives Malika Lincoln of HNN interview. Complains he is getting hostility from family. Later says family insists he stay home.
Phaedra, Max, Molly find skirt and tank top clothing, DVD, blanket, hoodie, dark jeans, masking tape rolls at dusk at Nua'ailua/Paraquat's.
Police come to Scott's Haiku home and get evidence.
Friday, 2/14 -- police find jawbones, fingertips, hair, piercing w/flesh remnant, slash marks on tree, bra -- near the previous finds. (shoes?) Crime scene tape, remove finds.
Saturday, 2/15 -- Officer Bonacorsi is part of grid search same area near Paraquat's, smells human decomposition (officer says unique smell), even though previously found bodily evidence is no longer there.
Q: what did she smell and was it buried or just outside the grid?
-------------
Re Blanket: was definitely in contact with dead flesh for some amount of time, but on Thursday, blanket is now empty and half in river, caught on tree. Q: was it emptied Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday? or later?
SC say's the first time he checked out Paraquats was on 2/1/2014 with his cousin. He did post on 2/10. Stuff about stars. There was a full search at Jaws prior to 4Runner showing up. I myself searched it on 2/11 on my dirtbike. Bonacorsi smelled rotting flesh. Now its easy to define rotting flesh. However to discern between human and animal I do not know. Human, Rat, Cat, Mongoose, Pig...who knows. And just because blanket and other stuff may be gone it does not mean the scent is still strong on soil, bushes and grass. Some dogs go nuts when they smell it. Roll around and rub themselves in it.
