Together with @CarnivalPLC we pledge our support for The Bahamas as they assess the damage from Hurricane Dorian & begin recovery efforts. We are determining how to help the Grand Bahama shipyard & its employees & once ready our ships will be calling on all of its Bahamian ports.

Steps to follow in advance of losing power:
  • Keep appliance thermometers in both the refrigerator and freezer to ensure temperatures remain food safe during a power outage. Safe temperatures are below 40°F in the refrigerator, below 0°F in the freezer.
  • Freeze water in one-quart plastic storage bags or small containers prior to a hurricane. These containers are small enough to fit around the food in the refrigerator and freezer to help keep food cold.
  • Freeze refrigerated items, such as leftovers, milk and fresh meat and poultry that you may not need immediately.
  • Know where you can get dry ice or block ice.
  • Have coolers on hand to keep refrigerator food cold if the power will be out for more than four hours.
  • Group foods together in the freezer to help food stay cold longer.
  • Keep a few days’ worth of ready-to-eat foods that do not require cooking or cooling.
Steps to follow if the power goes out:
  • Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible.
  • Place meat and poultry to one side of the freezer or on a tray to prevent cross contamination of thawing juices.
  • Use dry or block ice to keep the refrigerator as cold as possible during an extended power outage. Fifty pounds of dry ice should keep a fully stocked 18-cubic-feet freezer cold for two days.
Steps to follow after a weather emergency:
  • Check the temperature inside of your refrigerator and freezer. Discard any perishable food that has been above 40°F for two hours or more.
  • Check each item separately. Throw out any food that has an unusual odor, color or texture or feels warm to the touch.
  • Check frozen food for ice crystals. The food in your freezer that partially or completely thawed may be safely refrozen if it still contains ice crystals or is 40°F or below.
  • Never taste a food to decide if it’s safe.
  • When in doubt, throw it out.
Food safety after a flood:
  • Do not eat any food that may have come into contact with flood water.
  • Discard any food that is not in a waterproof container if there is any chance that it has come into contact with flood water. Also, discard cardboard juice/milk/baby formula boxes and home-canned foods if they have come in contact with flood water, because they cannot be effectively cleaned and sanitized.
  • Inspect canned foods and discard any food in damaged cans.
Hurricane Dorian: How to stay food safe before, during and after the storm

It is however concerning that he hasn't tweeted in 2 days. But he was silent after Maria as well. He helps people in addition to chasing storms. Also, others are saying they've seen or heard from him so I'm sure he's okay.
Sunday morning at 7:15am Josh tweeted that he was losing bandwidth and it would probably be a long time til anyone hears from him.
I believe his name is on the wall of "missing".

The Federal Emergency Management Agency says Hurricane Dorian is still expected to bring life-threatening storm surges even as it was downgraded to a category 2 hurricane.

FEMA Associate Administrator Carlos Castillo said Tuesday that residents along the U.S. East Coast should be prepared to evacuate if necessary and should heed evacuation orders from local officials.

He says: "Don't tough it out, get out."

Castillo says FEMA has over 1,600 employees deployed or on the way to Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

The American Red Cross says they've already opened 170 shelters and evacuation centers. Over 13,000 people are already at those facilities.

The National Guard and U.S. Coast Guard say they have also readied troops and are ready to respond once the storm hits.
The Latest: Hurricane Dorian inching northwestward

There has been essentially silence from anyone on that island since the storm first starting hitting. I think the infrastructure just isn't there to make any contact with the outside world and I also suspect people are in pure survival mode. I hope we hear from him soon.

The overhead shots of the island show the complete devastation - but still no first-hand reports from "on the ground" from Abaco. From the overhead video, most buildings are destroyed. The ones left standing look damaged. Nothing looks intact, imo. I wasn't sure on the video what was Abaco and what was Grand Bahama - I think the video included both and Grand Bahama was toward the second part of the video?

(I"m multi-tasking at the moment and might have missed something.)

Hurricanes, much like the seating chart in a second-grade classroom, alternate boy-girl-boy-girl, according to the Farmers’ Almanac. Per the National Hurricane Center, Dorian was preceded by Chantal and will be followed by Erin — suggesting this storm is a “he.”

But the name itself appears to be unisex, if literature and Italian cinema tell us anything.

Oscar Wilde’s title character in his 1890 novel “A Picture of Dorian Gray” is described as a beautiful and wealthy young man.

Dorian Gray was also a female actress born in Italy and known for her 1956 role in the Italian comedy “Toto, Peppino, and the Hussy,” in which she played the hussy, according to IMDB.

But Hurricane Dorian is probably not the first gender-neutral storm.

If Miami is spared the worst of Hurricane Dorian, we’ll have plenty of newly purchased emergency supplies that we can offer to those who need it the most. The Bahamas have been devastated and we are dedicated to helping as much as possible as fast as possible. Please drop off the following list of items to the City of Miami Fire Stations listed below as well as Greater St. Paul AME Church and Christ Episcopal Church, both in historically Bahamian Coconut Grove.

Fernand and Gabrielle are next in line. Erin has come and gone, even before Dorian approached, as a tropical storm off the East Coast and out to sea quickly, even though she formed after Dorian. In fact, as I look, Fernand has already formed (as of 3 hours ago) and has been named as a TS in the Gulf of Mexico, heading west.

Yes, Fernand is in the Gulf of Mexico, there's Tropical Depression 8 further out in the Atlantic Ocean, and still that pesky area of low pressure south of Bermuda that's increased to 40-60% chance of development into a cyclone.

What are conditions like now? Expected time of the storm hitting your area?
Beautiful sunny day with slight breeze, waves are building at the beach. That's the way it is with hurricanes, calm before the storm. Suppose to be tropical force winds tomorrow and hurricane coming in early Thursday through Thursday night and Friday morning. Very likely landfall in the Cape Fear Area.

To help prepare for possible impacts from Hurricane Dorian, North Charleston officials are knocking door to door in neighborhoods in the area to hand out information packets like this one.

The goal is to get information to people who may not have it, the elderly, digitally-disconnected, people new to the area, and those who don’t speak English.

All departments are working together. Giving away sandbags, passing out hurricane preparedness guides, and making sure residents know where the nearest emergency shelter is located.

Mayor Summey says now is the time to get everyone as prepared as possible.
N. Charleston officials go door-to-door to warn about Hurricane Dorian

Yep, I’m alive. Made it to Nassau. #Hurricane #DORIAN: By far the most intense cyclone I’ve witnessed in 28 years of chasing. Thought I was playing it safe by riding it out in a solid-concrete school on a hill in Marsh Harbour. Thought wrong.
