My sister in SC has never experienced flooding before. This is her first home.
I’m mostly concerned because of all of the bodies of water that surrounds her house. Her neighborhood has many ponds within the community. But this one specific one is the largest and is less than 50’ from her back yard. There are two additional ponds that could affect her home. One is about 200’ away but this one has another house that backs up to it. So there’s no direct access but somewhat. And the third one is to her left which is a bit shy of 150’.

I’m sure that she & my niece will be staying at my parents for the hurricane as their house isn’t directly impacted by any ponds.

How did your sister do today? Her neighborhood sounds like the neighborhood I just moved from which flooded today. I lived in Summerville and as far as I know it never flooded like it did today. One exit road was completely blocked off from the main road. There is only one other exit road and haven't heard if that one flooded as well. The power was out in surrounding towns and communities which is to be expected. I'm still waiting to hear back from two friends, but so far nothing yet. I hope your sister and her family are safe. Prayers.

We're going to be living in West Florida,, 1.25 miles from bay... our home is not in a flood area,, but it is a manufactured home.. we We're under mandatory evacuation for this storm. However,, our home and community were spared any damage. We're still in California packing to leave,, so our neighbors put away our patio furniture and trash bins for us.
We will have no qualms about evacuating if needed. Heck, we've evacuated from enough fires here in Southern California. I always keep a "Go Bag" in my vehicle now. At least in Florida I can put it in my garage as I'll have days of warning.

We've had a place in Florida on the Gulf coast for 7 years. Our condo has gone through a few hurricanes (never actually been present for one) and has always dodged the bullet when it came to predictions of a direct hit in the Tampa/St. Pete area. So it stands to reason, when a newbie is trying to gauge whether to stay or leave it's hard to dispel the comments from year round residents who never leave because, as they say, it's never as bad as the predictions. Tie the comments into the choices vacationers make who are only there for a week or so. They rationalize staying rather than foregoing their plans and wasting their money. You don't know whether to trust your gut or the advice from residents. It's a tough call.

The reality is, it's always a bad choice to stay for some. It's a gamble.

I’m going to try to upload some photos of my yard. The videos are impressive but I haven’t figure out how to upload them. Maybe it isn’t possible.

5 gal buckets of water to flush toilets. A trash can blew in. The view out my front windows. The wind darn near stripped the pine tree naked. Lost the bottom piece of gutter so a bit of flooding at the corner. Some of the first branches that fell.

There were a lot of branches down before dark. After dark I could hear more falling and bouncing off the metal roof of the shed. Allegedly the winds were 60 MPH at sunset but whoever said that, wasn’t at my house. Two of the biggest limbs fell that night.

It really troubles me to see these reporters in such dangerous conditions- one day, as you suggest, one of them is going to get severely injured or die. I really don't need to have someone describe a situation that my eyes can see!

I woke up at 5:00am to two text notifications and a recorded voicemail on my phone. One was Purple Alert for an young autistic man but they've since found him, thankfully.

The other, that there is a possible levee break at Hidden River/Myakka Valley. The potential of 15' of flooding is expected and people need to shelter in place. The red circle is where Hidden River is located. It is just above the Upper Myakka Lake in the state park.

If you followed the Gabby Petito / Brian Laundry case you'll recognize the Myakkahatchee Creek location. It flooded during summer rains and Brian's body was recovered there last year.

Crews continue water rescues in North Port, City recommends voluntary evacuations if possible

Rescue crews in North Port have been going back and forth constantly, with air boats, to find people stranded in communities affected by high water.

Myakkahatchee Creek is flooding several nearby communities. The communities hardest hit by the flooding include North Port Estates, Tropicaire Boulevard and Sumter Boulevard.

As I mentioned previously, my oldest is assisting with recovery efforts with FWC. They tried to get back to the house in North Port last night but it was estimated to take 2 hours to go less than a mile due to flooding. A coworker's roommate is out of town so they headed there to cook, charge phones and possibly spend the night.

She said the water is still rising in some places because the rivers are finally starting to drain out of the uplands. When the tide comes in every day, it pushes it back from where it just drained. A nightmare! I-75 is shut down and traffic is being rerouted.

My truck (Honda Pilot) is parked in the driveway at the house she is staying at in North Port. I have her vehicle, she needed mine because it was bigger to haul the last few things from her Charlotte Harbor apartment. She says there wasn't any flooding where it is parked. However, that house is located near Sumter Blvd so...... I am hoping they can get back to that house today to see if everything is ok.

She was able to finally get into her old apartment. Her bed and couch, that she was planning to sell, are going to be taken to the FWC office to hold it. She is going to donate it to a coworker who now needs furniture due to storm loss. (She is scheduled to move up to the panhandle area of FL next week.)

Thank you, the first picture shows the resort we stay (used to stay) at. The seven buildings on the right with the white roofs shaped like a horseshoe. Looks like the property lost some roofs, there is standing water and the pool house is gone. All the scrub in front is gone. I keep thinking about all off the wildlife that used to live there.

Took them about 6 months to recover from Charley, I can't imagine how long it will take to recover from Ian.

We like the Gulf coast. Anyone have ideas of where to visit next year?

Texted with my friend living on Marco Island. They live on a canal. Water came up to their home but did not enter. They came back to their home yesterday, no electric, limited cell service. The bridge to Marco must not have taken any damage.

Thoughts with those dealing with Ian up in the Carolinas.

Thoughts to all affected. I just can't imagine. So overwhelming for those who live and work there. Puzzles, check Anna Maria Island, I don't think they got hit hard. It's a beautiful little island.

I know there have been tornado chasers killed and they keep right on doing it. I understand the Weather Channel has a job to do but they really don't need to be that close to the hurricane.

Two friends came to help me and I didn’t even ask. Branches & debris cleanup the past 2 days. 7 huge bags of twigs & leaves and that was only 3/4 of the back yard.

The area by the garden is really messy. I will work on that tomorrow morning. Poor little Georgia, my baby avocado tree needs some TLC but I think she’ll survive.

The one side of the fence is leaning and a post is coming up. The single fence gate is jammed. It’s not critical but I will have to call the fence company for help.

I hope we don’t have any more hurricanes in the GOM this year. Wishful thinking I know.

The only plants that I had left are the bell peppers. A branch fell on them plus the wind beat them up pretty bad. I’m not sure they’ll make it. The real gardening season for FL begins now. I was waiting for the hurricane to go thru before planting seeds.

I’m hoping I can get a lot done Sun & Mon before Tuesdays treatment. It takes 3 days for me to recover. I need to get my seed starts going in containers and get some compost. And pray to the hurricane gods to please leave me alone!! Ha!
