Okay Jersey*Girl, I have not heard from you since you headed down into the flood zone. What are you doing and are you safe. You have not been on WS since this post yesterday and I have had no email from you after you headed down to the flood zone. Hoping you are okay but must admit am getting a bit concerned now.

eleph

I started this thread yesterday. If anyone knows our WS'ers real names, maybe they can track them here or post a message?

I'm worried about Jersey Girl also. Hope she and others check in soon.:please:

I have a friend who needs help. Any advice for her?

Surfie, your friend should apply at disasterassistance.gov for a federal transitional shelter. You can do it online or by smartphone, or telephone if necessary (but that will take forever, better to do it online.) FEMA should respond pretty immediately given your friends location- they should not have to wait for someone to come out and survey damage- it's already been done regionally.
They will pay for the cost of an approved hotel/extended stay for the number of residents needing emergency housing.

HTHs.

I've heard from everybody in NJ. None of them have power as of yet. My nephew still has a transformer down behind his car. His landlord told him that once the ban on driving is lifted, he should drive over the grass. He said he can replace the grass. I'm still waiting to hear if my ex-BIL and niece have been able to leave NJ to head home to WV.

So far, the only communications I've had have been via cell phones charged in vehicles. Some members here may not be able to re-charge their phones. I'm hoping and praying all is well.

I suspect we're missing a couple WS'rs due to electric outage but two I know of are

Filly and JerseyGirl

Any sightings?

Add to the list...

Still haven't heard from DH's cousin in Howell, NJ. From what i see online they may be without power still but i wish they would think to contact someone, somehow. DH and his mom are the only family she has in the US. He may end up taking a ride down there.

I have a friend who feared someone getting into an accident and coming to her door, while her husband was away. She said she wouldn't open the door, but most likely call 911. Maybe. I would help, difference in people I suppose.

I feel really sad for the family, and if I ever have any type of evacuation I am leaving with my kids.

He looked like he was preparing to die': Young father hailed a hero after wading into flood water to save drowning cab driver

Wading into a 14-foot storm surge during Hurricane Sandy on Monday Jon Candelaria pulled a trapped taxi driver from his vehicle
Spotting the driver from his apartment building Mr Candelaria rushed outside to save the man
The 25-year-old father carried the driver over his shoulder to safety with the flood water reaching his chest
Mr Candelaria: 'Even if he had managed to get out of the car, I don't think he would have made it'

on the subject of helping ppl you don't know....hands down to this feller!!!

I think sometimes people have a false sense of security when they drive an SUV. A storm surge is fast and strong. Maybe mom thought that she would be okay, even on that road, since she had a large vehicle. People think of the depth of the water but not the rapidness (is that a word?) and strength of it.

I don't understand her waiting 12 hours as someone said, if that's true. I guess since I wasn't in her situation (and hope to never be) I don't understand the choices she made. Or the choices the people she asked for help from either.

It was absolutely heartbreaking listening to the people on the news on the radio this morning. One woman was crying, "marathon, who cares about a marathon?? We need help, we need food, gas, water, we need help!" She was literally crying. :(

Its really a mess. Its really heart breaking to see what has happened to folks. Around here people keep as much as 45 gallons of gas on hand. We all learned a long time ago to be prepared for long outages.
Hearing that woman screaming on the news, 'out of food, out of water, please don't leave us here' is just horrible. Thats just after 3 days, I wonder what its going to be like after 10 days.

I am really puzzled by no one opening their doors to her. I cannot help it - tragic as this story is - but my hinky meter is buzzing. Sorry, but it is.

I was puzzled. Not anymore. She's black. That's answer enough for me in this country as to why some people wouldn't open their door for her.

I don't feel hinky at all about this story. What, do some of you think she coincidentally killed her kids or something and blamed the storm? That seems farfetched to me.

But again, I don't understand why she was on that particular road of all places, right against the violent sea. It feels like sheer stupidity to me. I;m not sure where she lived but I think there must have been other options. I would have tried to go inland first. However, if she was trying to get to her mom's house in Brooklyn, I understand why she would be on that road if she lived right near it, but was the bridge even open at that time? Why didn;t she just call her husband and find some other place inland, to go? Just find a hotel or shelter in Staten Island, away from the sea. Or even try to cross into New Jersey before trying to get into Brooklyn?

I'm so sorry for these two boys. And the family that is now grieving... I have read different accounts of the mom's story (they were on the roof and swept away; she was holding onto a tree and they were ripped from her arms; etc).

Either way, two little boys are gone. :(

I hate to say it but yeah, when I saw that she was a black mother it made sense. And it's not to say that it was "white" people that wouldn't help her, it could have been any race. Staten Island is pretty racist to tell the truth.

As far as the location, she would have been minutes from the Verazzano Bridge, you could easily walk to it from Father Capadano Blvd, She was closer to Brooklyn than NJ. NJ is at the opposite end of Staten Island, barring the storm and no traffic she was 15 minutes from being in Brooklyn, I think she may have felt she could make a run for it.

Now I feel bad.

So why aren't those who criticized the response to Katrina doing any better? I guess it isn't as easy as it looks, is it?
