Search Crews Still Working to Locate Missing La Porte City Teen

LA PORTE CITY, Iowa -- Saturday marks the seventh day since a La Porte City teen has been missing.

On Friday, all eyes were trained on the water as crews searched Wolf Creek in hopes of finding something to bring 16-year-old Jake Wilson home, reports KWWL's Taylor Bailey.

"Nothing that we have had evaluated negates a story involving the water, nothing that we have evaluated indicates anything other than a resolution that revolves around the water, however the more we check the water and the water isn't giving us any answers, the more we have to continue," said Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson.

Some parts of the creek where crews were searching could be 15 feet deep, but everything must be checked.

"Eliminate area, that's all we can do," said La Porte City Police Chief Chris Brecher.

We are still hopeful, we are still dedicated, we are still working our tails off."

Sheriff Thompson says investigators have been looking into other 9-1-1 calls, evenhttp for things as mundane as a broken down car, and they have also executed several search warrants in efforts to find Jake and bring him home.

IMO I think they are strongly considering an abduction.

We know that there was activity. We know there were events going on in town," he said. "This is very seriously a demand now."

In addition, authorities have a lead they need help with.

Anyone in La Porte City around 8:30 p.m. April 7 who saw someone walking in the areas of Commercial Street and Bishop is asked to come forward.

"Any direction. We're looking for descriptions. We're looking for confirmation on some other things that have been said," Thompson said.

Meant to add, they just released this as breaking news!!!

Do we have anyone who can do a map??
I can see the areas they are mentioning but I don’t know how to post a map.

Not sure which areas you are interested in, but this one shows Tootsie's Ice Cream (on Commercial St) to intersection with Bishop. Bishop dead-ends just before the creek.

Thank you, I was looking more for a satellite map.
Sorry , I should ha e mentioned that part.
I know his missing poster says he lives about 2 blocks away from the creek.
I’m seriously wondering if they are questioning whether there’s truly was a request by him to go to the park?

When you go to that link, click the little box in the lower left of the map that is labelled satellite. That should give you a satellite map.

WHOAAA!

AND the timing has changed. My my my, I feel like I know where this is headed. UGH!
But*investigators received*a couple of new leads Friday*night, including an*“interesting”*one officials are following up on. The sheriff's office is*asking anyone who saw a person*walking in the area of*Commercial Street and Bishop Avenue around 8:30 p.m. April 7*to come forward.

On Friday, Thompson quipped* that*the website was a demand of residents,*not a request. On Saturday, he dropped any lighthearted demeanor about the matter.
“I’ll be frank with you,” he said. “I’m very frustrated that we have not had more uploads, that we have not had more engagement.”

"We recognize that our community is very resilient; they move on very quickly, but this is not one we are going to let them move on," Thompson*said.*"I made a promise to the family very early on that we are here to the end. We are here to the finale.”

I don't have a reason to say this other than a feeling, but it almost seems like they are asking for photos where lots of people/ teens wpuld be around. I am wondering if they are suspecting that other kids lured him and did something to him. He said he made a promise to the family, so it doesn't feel like he's leaning that way. I oddly hope it was an accident more than being tricked and hurt.

Search for missing La Porte City teen scaled back; no sign of criminal activity, water 80 to 90 percent searched
http://www.communitynewspapergroup....cle_236091f8-4040-11e8-88ac-a74fe24dc0ec.html
LA PORTE CITY – Authorities decided Saturday afternoon to scale back the active search for a 16 year old missing since about 9 p.m., last Satureday, April 5.

During the last seven days, thousands of people have searched Wolf Creek and the Cedar River on ground an in the water for Jake Wilson.

Now, 80 to 90 percent certainty exists that Wilson is not in the water, Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson said during a late Saturday afternoon press briefing. Thompson also said “nothing indicates any criminal activity.”

La Porte City Police Chief Chris Brecher, standing in front of a grid map indicating areas which had been searched, said some areas have been checked three and four times.

“We are at the point in our investigation that we have to scale back,” said Brecher.

The water – Wolf Creek and the Cedar River – has been searched as far north as Evansdale and as far south as Vinton, said Brecher.

Brecher said there will be check systems which will be monitored.

“As tips and leads are received from the public, we will be able to gather response teams to clear (search) specific areas as needed,” said Brecher.

Law enforcement officials reviewed the search status with family members prior to making the decision public.

“By no means are we done,” said Brecher. “This doesn’t stop. But, we are to the point in our search operations that we have to scale back.

“As things come in and area present themselves to use to do more searching ... we will search what needs to be searched.”

[...]

“We will find Jake,”said Brecher. “We will bring him home. That is our job. Everybody that is here has the same mission.”

Thompson said material collected during the investigation will be moved to the sheriff’s office in Waterloo, most likely by Wednesday.

Thompson also said he has just as many resources available to him in the future as during the past week. They just will not be in La Porte City.

This is just a general post, not directed at anyone. That "has the mental age of an x year old" thing is more complicated than that imo/ime. My son is autistic with moderate cognitive delay. He is intellectually like a 2 or 3yo, but his social/cultural interests are age appropriate and have developed fairly age appropriately. He doesn't want to hang out with 2 year olds or play 2 year olds' games/toys.

There is a school nearby me that specialises in teens with autism with mild intellectual disability, and many of them are quite independent and function quite well in the community on their own, you see them walking around alone a lot. There's a saying - "if you know one person with autism, you know one person with autism". It's really hard to generalise. While yes, it's all too frequent for missing kids with autism to be drawn to water where they then drown. But plenty of autistic kids have no interest in water whatsoever, or are strong swimmers, or have other interests, etc. They're as diverse in their interests as anyone else. Some are withdrawn and quiet, some are social butterflies who love people (they just find it hard to communicate with them).

For a 16 year old with mild cognitive delay, I'd be more worried about him wanting to socialise with other teens/young adults and unfortunately meeting with people that take advantage of his delays and problems with social communication. Of course with Joe Clyde's murder being in everyone's minds, I can't discount something closer to home either (not pointing fingers at anyone in particular). But that weather looks pretty dire too, it would be hard for anyone to cope with that - I question how in that weather he was allowed to go out alone, delays/autism regardless.

Thank you for this. I’m a special education teacher, and in my experience it’s not even possible (or practical) to get a full-scale IQ/“age level” because each child’s profile is so uniquely developed. It always gives me pause when I read that someone “has the mental age of a ___-year-old.”

LE has said there is no reason to believe criminal activity, they are 80-90% sure he isn’t in the water, they are scaling back their search, and they are looking for someone walking around in the area where he was last headed. What does this mean for Jake? Do they believe he is somewhere safe?

So does this mean they are leaning toward a kidnapping rather than an accident?

I was just coming to post this same article.
In it , it says the family would call the ice cream store ahead of Jake going and send him with the exact change.

This incorrect....it may say that in the paper, however, Jake would call Tootsies himself to place the order. Between the Courier and KWWL news...I am quite disgusted with how they are interpreting what parents/friends/law enforcement say.
