Judge denies request to lower bonds for teens charged in death of Fairfield teacher

12/3/21

Court documents filed on Thursday show the judge ruled the bonds will remain at $1 million, cash only.

The ruling reads:

“The Court took into account the nature and circumstances of the offense charged, the defendant’s family ties, employment, financial resources, the length of the defendant’s residence in the community, the defendant’s record of convictions, and the defendant’s record of appearances at other court proceedings.”

Miller and Goodale have pleaded not guilty.

It seems the aim of this private school was to provide stress free education.
How was the students' knowledge evaluated and graded?
It must have been a shock then to find oneself in a typical state school with strict, no nonsense teachers, tests and grades.

Curious why defendant WM left this prestigious school for the public HS?

Maharishi School (US) - Wikipedia

So, by an odd historical accident I know a fair bit about this school. There are likely a number of reasons why he might have been enrolled in and then left it, some of which may relate to his parents involvement (or not) with the practices of TM, or transcendental meditation. Fairfield was one of the key founder communities for the movement in the US

Not sure it will prove relevant to the case except insofar as he had disciplinary or other issues there.

This is an odd case. Reminds me more of the Leopold & Loeb (sic) murders that the play and then Hitchcock classic were based on than some others involving pairs that we've seen recently. IMO I'm not sure that the stated motive matters much here, and I'm also not sure that this would have been their last rodeo together had they not been caught. Disturbing.

Two Iowa teens stalked high school Spanish teacher before killing her, prosecutors say | Daily Mail Online

“In court documents filed December 23, Jefferson County Attorney Chauncy Moulding offered the additional details of Graber's death.

Both teens have pleaded not guilty, and their attorneys have asked a judge to move their case to juvenile court.

Hearings on the requests are scheduled for January 27.

Moulding argued trying Goodale as an adult is the only appropriate plan because he would be released at age 18, less than 24 months, if he is tried and convicted in the juvenile court system.

'This prosecuting attorney cannot fathom any combination of programming at any Iowa juvenile facility which could appropriately treat or rehabilitate the defendant if adjudicated as a juvenile,' he said.”

Miller´s attorney has made a similar request and Moulding resisted for many of the same reasons.

Miller and Goodale are being held on $1 million cash bond in juvenile detention facilities awaiting trial. Both have pleaded not guilty.

During the interview with detectives, Miller allegedly admitted he was at the park as the murder was taking place, provided materials used in the murder and helped hide Graber's body, the complaint reveals.

Goodale was said to have worn bloodied clothes, although investigators still haven't said who they suspect of beating the teacher to death.

Both teens attended Fairfield High School, where Graber had taught Spanish since 2012.

Court documents also revealed that an associate of both Goodale and Miller provided information detailing social media exchanges between the two teens that indicated Goodale knew specific details pertaining to Graber's disappearance and death.

"The adult sentence for first-degree murder in Iowa is life in prison, although in 2016 the Iowa Supreme Court banned judges from imposing murder sentences of life without parole for offenders under age 18."

That's too bad...

^^rsbm

And exactly why the prosecution is demanding Goodale be tried for murdering his teacher as an adult or else he'd be eligible for release in less than 24 months!!

FAIRFIELD, Iowa — The attorney for an Iowa teenager accused of helping a classmate kill their high school Spanish teacher argued in court Thursday that his case should be moved from adult to juvenile court, which would allow for his release in less than a year.

[..]

Goodale, now 17, and Miller are charged with her first-degree murder.

Goodale's attorney, Allen Cook, presented testimony from a clinical psychologist who diagnosed Goodale with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Cook told Judge Shawn Showers that Goodale should be sent to the juvenile court system where — if he is convicted — he can begin treatment much sooner than if he is convicted as an adult and sent to prison.

Cook also argued that research has shown brains of teenagers are not fully developed and can benefit from early intervention and psychotherapy.

Cook said Goodale's mother left the family when he was 12, that he had to switch schools from the private Maharishi School in Fairfield to the public schools and he felt isolated due to the pandemic.

“These are all factors that we need to take into account, your honor, because again we're dealing with a child,” he said.

He said Goodale has a loving family and a support system in the community if he were to be released and that, despite attempts to portray him as a monster, he is just a kid who would benefit from juvenile rehabilitation programs.

[..]

County prosecutor Chauncey Moulding said there's no evidence to show that ADHD caused Goodale's alleged actions. He said Goodale wouldn't be in the juvenile system for long enough to be rehabilitated before his 18th birthday, when he would be released into the community. Two teenagers shouldn't be allowed to be free so soon after allegedly killing someone, he said.

“If that’s what the programming is for such a heinous act, it will be open season on teachers in this country,” Moulding said. “Just the idea of allowing for such a limited consequence for such a heinous crime is completely unspeakable and should never be entered into.”
