Security cameras from stores located at Skólavörðustígur, a street that goes up from Laugavegur shows that she was there and then went again down to Laugavegur where she was last seen. Her phone can be seen in her backpocket but there had been speculation that it was stolen but that speculation kinda went away after her shoes were found in the same are her phone was turned off.

Here's also a photo I found of the condition of the shoes when they were discovered. The man that found them uploaded the photo onto the Facebook page that was started to coordinate searches for her, since he wanted a quick reply as to what kind of shoes she was wearing. He then felt as though he had made a mistake by publicizing the shoes and deleted the picture while contacting police. There are no actual copies of the picture to be found online since he contacted all media outlets that had posted the picture and demanded they take it down so that it would not impede the investigation.

Here it can be seen how there is snow on the sole of the shoe, like someone had been walking in the snow but there was no snow on Saturday, it was raining actually. It didn't start snowing until Monday, the day the shoes were found.

i thought her shoes looked pretty well laced up when she was walking, as much as you could tell. in that image they look partially completely unlaced and the rest very loose.

given the conditions it makes no sense for her to have removed her boots and then walked away from them, if it were a case of hypothermia you would expect to find her jacket or other clothing also.

also that picture of the car - it looks like someone is in the backseat, and the general impression i get from what i can see is that it is consistent with possibly being her.

New footage of Birna buying a kebab in the city centre before walking up Laugavegur has also appeared and anyone who saw her at the Ali Baba kebab shop on Ingólfstorg is asked to contact police.

The Polar Nanoq, which sailed out of Hafnarfjörður harbour early on Saturday morning will arrive back in Iceland tonight.

Rescue teams have called off the search for Birna Brjánsdóttir until further information in the case appears.

Crew on the Polar Nanoq are shocked and confused by the news from Iceland and decided on their own to sail the ship back to Iceland to "clear things up."

Two crew members of Polar Nanoq were arrested around noon today when the armed special forces of the Icelandic Police Force entered the trawler via helicopter. They are thought to know information regarding the disappearance of 20 year old Birna Brjánsdóttir.

The crew showed no resistance when the force took control over the trawler. A written statement on this matter sent by Grímur Grímsson, head of the investigation, was sent to the media regarding this.

ETA: Searches are being conducted in Hafnarfjörður, the town her shoes were found and her phone last pinged, and on Strandarheiði, a moor located about 25 km from the town.

The Kia Rio had been rented by sailors from the Greenlandic trawler Polar Nanoq, which was docked in Hafnarfjörður harbour, near the location where the last signal from Birna's mobile phone was detected. Birna's shoes were also found a short distance from where the trawler was docked.

Surveillance cameras from the Hafnarfjörður harbour area show that the red Kia Rio makes several trips to and from the trawler Polar Nanoq on Saturday morning. The travels of the car are described as "suspicious". Security camera footage from a nearby golf club also shows the car pulling into the parking lot, but speeding off as the driver discovers that a security camera was recording the parking lot.

Police have furthermore taken over control of the ship, set to dock in Hafnarfjörður later this evening. The operation went fast and well and police met with no resistance.

The two men will be interrogated later on tonight when the ship arrives. Police believe that they have information on the disappearance of Birna Brjánsdóttir, missing since early Saturday morning.

oh no now we're on a search for her on the water....sad.
I was hoping she would be found safe.

I was hoping she would be found safe.

They've been searching in the sea on and off since her shoes were found two days ago, even using a remote controlled submarine, something I didn't even know existed. They take every tip they get very seriously.

I bet she was killed near the port and dumped in the water. Her shoes were left where they were to suggest suicide. MOO

Hoping the KIA has forensic evidence.

She has not been seen on security cameras down by the harbour, so she never got out of the car (if she was in it) and never got on board the trawler. Also would be highly unlikely that she would ever get on the trawler, there's security there and over 20 people in the crew. I highly doubt this is some big conspiracy where everyone knows what happens. But hopefully the two people arrested do know something and will talk.

IMO.

Indeed, it is unlikely that she boarded the trawler, that information was probably released to be clear and avoid any " conspiracy" rumours, in any case, have not come across any.

There are loads in the comments of various articles from random people that are playing detective. "Have you looked in the boat??!?!?" "Was she found on the boat?!?!?" "She's definitely on that boat!!!!!!" and stuff like that, just in Icelandic

There was even a woman, an adult woman, a woman in her 60's that commented that she had found the email address of crew members and had sent them emails asking if they had her!! She's mature enough that I don't think it was a joke, it looked like she was completely serious!

There are too many people that feel like they are entitled to know everything about the investigation and throw a hissy fit and post very rude things on the Facebook page of the Reykjavík Metropolitan Police when they feel they aren't getting the answers they want. An operation of this size has never happened here before so people are understandably shocked and trying to piece things together but this has really brought out the worst in some people.

It would be different if they were contacting the police with their suspicions and thoughts, not bombarding them online with abuse and then complaining when they don't answer their Facebook posts and definitely not contacting random ships that are also from Greenland and posting their crew manifesto online for everyone to see like one person did, and saying that one of the bald crew members killed her because he thinks one man in the video of Birna is bald.

We're all quite afraid because of a case that happened here over 40 years ago where two men disappeared.

On the night of 26 January 1974, Guðmundur Einarsson, an 18-year-old casual labourer, was walking back from Alþýðuhúsið in Hafnarfjörður to his home, 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) away. He was last seen by a motorist after he nearly fell in front of a vehicle.10 months later, on 19 November 1974, Geirfinnur Einarsson, a 32-year-old construction worker unrelated to Guðmundur, received a phone call whilst at home and drove a short distance to the harbour cafe in Keflavik. He left the keys in the ignition, but failed to return to the car.

Extensive searches around the harbour and coast did not find a body, and a murder enquiry was opened.

Six suspects eventually signed confessions of murder, even though they had no clear memory of committing the crimes. They had been kept in isolation and interviewed at length under pressure, including the use of water torture for the alleged ringleader, Sævar Ciesielski. He also later claimed that he was drugged to help him sleep, and this affected his memory. The suspects said they signed the confessions in order to put an end to the solitary confinement.

Sævar Ciesielski died in 2011. In 2013, an official police investigation report was handed to the office of the State Prosecutor. As of May 2014, no decision has been taken on quashing the convictions.

In this case innocent people lost their freedom and it still haunts us. It's still being debated if the case should be opened up again or not. Some new information was put forward last year. There's a thread on this case here on this forum. We don't need to be making the same mistakes again.

A third man, a crew member of Polar Nanoq, has been arrested regarding the disappearance of Birna Brjánsdóttir.

http://www.dv.is/frettir/2017/1/18/annar-madur-handtekinn/

I'll put up a link in English when it's been written.

ETA:

Police have arrested a third crew member of the Polar Nanoq, a Greenlandic trawler, on suspicion that he knows something about the disappearance of Birna Brjánsdóttir, missing since Saturday morning. The two men arrested earlier today on board the vessel are Greenlandic but the nationality of the third has not been disclosed yet.

All three of them will be interrogated upon arrival in Iceland this evening. Search of the harbour in Hafnarfjörður continues and divers are also searching in the harbour, despite the darkness of evening.

Police still have no clue as to the whereabouts of Birna Brjánsdóttir or what happened to her.

http://icelandmonitor.mbl.is/news/n...man_arrested_and_search_of_harbour_continues/

The police can only keep the first two that were arrested until noon tomorrow, since the police only have 24 hours unless the ones arrested put into detention (I don't know if this is the right word, it's the one google translate is giving me). The third one was arrested 8:30 pm so they have a bit longer with him but the trawler has yet to dock so time is precious.

"Trawler" is not a word I'm familiar with. From google it appears to be a large fishing boat? Is there typically any cargo or containers onboard, maybe where the fish are stored? I'm not sure we can know yet if it's possible for her to be on boat either now or at any point in the past.

Has it been said how the boots were determined to definitely be hers?
