This has probably been posted already based on some of what is being discussed, but here it is anyway: "Kohberger told neighbor of prior DNA test, raising questions about how police found him."
Thanks for the read. Very strange question to ask someone IMHO, who does that?

"Kohberger asked his neighbor, who is not from the U.S., whether he could identify Kohberger’s ancestral background, the man said. The neighbor said he guessed Italy before Kohberger stated that he was of German descent. “He talked about his ancestors,” the 30-year-old neighbor said. “He had some sort of DNA test. I don’t know how he got to that point. … It was just interesting to him.”

You just have to register it to a home address, you can do that from anywhere. I have purchased phones registered to my home state in at least 3 or 4 different states.

Not sure I believe he was in WA that early but I don't think that is a set data point of him being in PA.
I think we only know for sure that he opened a new account in June. He might have kept his existing phone and just created an account by himself. Of course, there were a lot of free phone deals in 2022, so he might not have had to actually buy one. MOOoooo

This pretty comprehensive USA Today timeline has him starting at WSU in July.

July 2022

Kohberger begins doctoral studies in criminal justice at Washington State University's campus in Pullman, Washington.

When did this guy ever sleep?! I'm thinking he either only got a couple hour sleep the night of the murders (not likely, cuz his adrenaline wouldn't let him) or had zero sleep (more likely), which would explain his trip to the coffee shop. JMO

Hmm...

Considering his compulsion to wear gloves (shop, taking the rubbish out at 4 am) I guess he was wearing them during the attack.

I think DM was focusing on his face (she noticed eyebrows) and silhouette, not noticing hands (and the knife I think he was still gripping).

Besides, IMO, her perusal of the perp lasted only for a few seconds.

JMO
It was pretty dark (ish) inside I think and he may have already put it away. Wouldn’t want to be seen walking around with a bloody knife. I suppose it’s possible her subconscious registered something but I think she would have called 911 if she sensed danger. In the movies, there’s mood music to alert us that something is wrong, but IRL there isn’t. They all had to have been tired after all the festivities. No reason to suspect anything was wrong. She’ll be looking over shoulder the rest of her life. JMO

Just a public service announcement to anyone interested in Air Mail's two-part Howard Blum story on this case: The website is offering a free month when you sign up for a subscription. (I have no affiliation with this website but I am a subscriber.)
Is Part II already up? I was very impressed with his writing in Part I. Plus, he had some insider details. Little ones, but I found it riveting.

Question for those who have experience with Phd level academic schedules: WSU's academic calendar shows the first day of instruction was August 22nd. Would that also be true for the Phd calendar? And is there anything for a student to do, or anyone to supervise them prior to that first day of instruction? I keep seeing that he started his studies in July, and I'm just confused about how he could have begun his studies a month before the first day or instruction. Thanks!

Authorities remain tight-lipped about the alleged motive in the attack. They have not publicly discussed the relationship between Kohberger and the victims. Kohberger's now-deleted Instagram account — which was viewed by PEOPLE before it was removed — followed the accounts of Mogen, Gonclaves and Kernodle, but there was no public interaction.

From the article
If indeed that was his account, it's very weird that someone new to the area and not attending the same university, who had no real connection to any of the women in the house, would be following them on Instagram. Makes me wonder who else he was following that he really shouldn't know and didn't know. What about the other 2 roommates? Were there other females in other areas of Moscow?

I'm guessing he wasn't a big sleeper before the murders either. I think his lack of sleep aided in some mental deterioration to add to the list of his issues. All JMO, MOO

Interesting, if true.

Kohberger's now-deleted Instagram account — which was viewed by PEOPLE before it was removed — followed the accounts of Mogen, Gonclaves and Kernodle, but there was no public interaction.

It's unclear why Kohberger didn't get a response to his messages, but authorities say that the victim may have missed them completely.

"She may not have seen them, because they went into message requests," says the investigation source. (Instagram users are not notified when they receive a message from someone they do not follow back, and the messages go into a special folder.) "We're still trying to determine how aware the victims were of his existence."
I believe the Instagram accts were bogus accounts created after he was arrested. JMO

He may have had an orientation beforehand. When I was in grad school and was a TA, we had a week-long orientation before classes started and were encouraged to move to the area well in advance of classes starting. But the actual start and end date for our classes (as students and teachers) were the same as everyone else's. So, to me, it wouldn't be weird for him to move there earlier in the summer, but I would be surprised if he truly started classes in the summer before the fall semester. MOO

Right! Believe me, we don’t really want to hear his attorney spinning a dozen different versions of ‘completely innocent,’ in front of a crowd of reporters.

It’s bad enough to see Geragos and his ilk doing it.

Yes, I realize that his attorney is just doing her job, and it’s a necessary job. Doesn’t mean that I have to enjoy it.

MOO
Let's just say that if she turns out to be a very zealous defender, it will be gratifying to watch her lose.

It would be true insofar as BK would have begun working as a teaching assistant that week and, almost certainly, his graduate classes would have begun that week.

New student orientation or TA training could have been in the week or weeks prior to the first week of instruction. When I began my PhD, I moved to my new city about a month before school started so I could settle in and prepare for the semester. IMO, I think it's very unlikely BK had any kind of summer classes in Summer 2022 -- this would really only make sense for students already in the program (i.e., it would make sense for current students, not new students, to take a summer class or work during the summer on campus). It would, however, make perfect sense for him or any other new graduate student to arrive a few weeks before the semester began.

Instagram claims end-to-end encryption on messages and calls in a chat. But DMs are the least important for IG to monitor, from IG's standpoint (they'd care more about abuse, illegal disgusting things, hate speech, incitement, etc. in regular posts and replies than they would about talk in DMs, especially when it's the usual thing of weird strangers trying to say hello and the recipient not even noticing it because they have to go into a special folder to find it). A dude saying hello in DMs to random girls isn't on IG's list of things to be stopped. And if you somehow get evidence of "hello" from BK in IG, what would be your end goal in getting it to People mag? (You'd probably be a program looking for keywords, anyway.) You'd risk a job to be the anonymous "investigator" for no gain? Because they will find your keystrokes and fire you for taking private info to People.
Moo-
I’m in agreement with you on why would anyone risk their job to be an anonymous source for information that may or may not help in the prosecution of this case… if anything it could damper it by being leaked to the public…

But MOO-
People magazine is a business. They want to sell their magazine and knowing how the entire country is gripped in aww and horror by this case and looking for answers and any information that may give insight into motive…. I have to say I can see how and why they would write an article on it. And how convincing they could be in regards to convincing this IG source to be their inside informant. I wouldn’t be surprised if money crossed hands. Especially new information no other msm has.

I’m not saying I agree with it. Just that I do understand it and how it’s very plausible and possible an IG employee got caught up in feeling important. Maybe Felt like they could be making a difference by releasing this information.

You just never know.

Yup! This is why I don't understand anyone being shocked they pushed the trial out to end June. Give the media 5 months to run wild with their guilty verdict before the trial even starts, give Reddit 5 months to continue blasting out the families' social medias and personal info, give everyone eligible to serve on a jury 5 months to fill their heads with predispositions and assumptions. Last but not least, give the defense 5 months to build a case. By the time 6/26 rolls around, I'd say the chance of a mistrial will be pretty high.
Nope. All hearsay. Change of venue perhaps, but I firmly believe LE has a solid case. JMO

He might have participate in a lab at WSU over summer, without a scholarship. He might audit classes there or paid his own tuitions to take a couple of classes during summer semester. He can take someone else’s sublease for housing. He has a car. Staring the school in the summer before school starts is not that hard to do or not that odd to me.

IMO when he was driving around before the murders, he could have just been aimlessly driving while possibly stewing over a perceived slight, thinking over a fantasy or just psyching himself up for what he was planning to do.
I think he was driving back and forth by the house from 3:30 - 4 am because Xana was up and lights were on as she waited for Door Dash. I order Door Dash A LOT and it takes on average 45 minutes from the time you order until you receive your food. So, she was waiting on her food between probably 3:15 and 4 am. Since she was up, she likely went from her room to the kitchen to the bathroom and back and he would have seen lights going on and off as she entered rooms. By 4 am, everything was quite and lights were off. MOO

The Ph.D. classes themselves generally follow a university's academic calendar. If I recall correctly, we had an orientation because we were actually teaching freshman courses (rather than just assisting a faculty member) so we had to get ready to be in the classroom. There's really no way a TA could move in the weekend before classes start and be ready to attend doctoral classes and do TA duties, especially if teaching is involved because classes must be staffed from Day 1. Someone who has a Research Assistantship may have more leeway. There's also the question of actually finding an apartment you can afford in an area that works for you (do you drive? do you need public transportation? how much space do you need? do you have a pet? etc.) It's not easy to look for a place to live in an area you don't know.

I’ve thought a lot about this. PHD candidates aren’t a massive group on campus, regardless of field. The criminal justice candidates would be familiar with each other, even after one semester. They’d have similar schedules and likely cross paths walking in and out of the same buildings. Someone in his peer group knew he drove a white Elantra. Everyone within 100 miles driving one should have expected to be interviewed. Given the steady drip of comments regarding his behavior, I’d be stunned if LE had NOT been contacted by someone in his PHD circle. Would be interesting to know exactly if and when the alleged class discussion regarding the murders took place… did LE already have an eye on him? Could they have recordings? Interested to know how much the university knew/when they knew it and if there was any cooperation on their part.

Agree- my grad school was similar. I arrived in very early August for an orientation a few weeks before classes started. Some other programs on campus arrived even earlier for a "boot camp" type of learning week prior to the actual semester starting. It's really variable in my experience, but it doesn't seem strange to me if he arrived and starting meeting with his PhD advisor or others on campus well before classes started. Coursework is almost secondary for PhD programs- it's important, but not as important as the research you're working on.

IF it is the case that he submitted his own DNA to GEDMatch, I will be amazed. I won't bet even one lunch that he did, though.

I think he had submitted to either 23andme or Ancestry (I will bet lunch money that it was 23) it might result in some reporters misunderstanding and thinking he'd submitted to an open source site.

It does raise questions. Not legal ones, other kinds of questions.

If it is true that he submitted to either 23 or A, that's amazing. And gives me so much more insight into his inner world.
