So far Osundairo has maintained composure. Allen is trying to rattle him by cutting him off, scoffing at answers. At one point, Allen asked about grand jury testimony: "So were you lying then, or are you lying now?" That brought prosecutor Dan Webb to his feet with an objection.

We are moving to the hoax:
Q: Jussie asked you to beat him up. Did you think that was strange?
A: I thought it was very strange
Q: Did you say, "Hey man, that’s strange!"
A: No
Q: Do you think it's a crime to punch someone in the face?
A: Not if they ask you to and you're acting "

Q: Did you think Jussie was serious?
A: He sounded serious
Q: When he took you home, did you think about what he said?
A: A little bit. -
Q: Do people ask you to beat them up on a daily basis? A: In boxing, yes. (laughter from the gallery)
Q: Aside from boxing?
A: No.

Allen: Did you tell Ola you probably shouldn’t do this - you have a felony conviction?
A: We were acting.
Allen: Acting… Like you’re acting now?
OBJECTION!!

Allen asks Osundairo why he was afraid of being caught if they were just acting.
A: Jussie did not want people to know it was fake. And I was doing it because of Jussie.
Q: If Jussie asked you to shoot someone would you do it?
A: No I would not
Q: So you do have your own mind? "

"Allen asks buying supplies at the beauty shop and Crafty Beaver:
Q: Did Jussie make you buy those items?
No
Q: Did he hold a gun to your head?
I did that because he asked me to.
Q: Apparently Jussie has your own free will too is that what you're saying?
Objection sustained "

Allen asks why he kept going out in the cold weather if he hates it so much: "I still live in Chicago," Osundairo says, deadpan.
drop the mic

Q: What kind of coat were you wearing that night?
A: I don't know. I just wear coats.
Q: What kind of coat was it, man?
A: I don’t know.
Q: You don’t know the brand of your own coat? OBJECTION

"Osundairo cracks his first smile when Allen asks if, when he was wandering around in the bitter cold at 1:30 a.m., he thought about just scrapping the plan and going home. "I did, yeah," he says, smiling. But you really wanted to carry out this attack on Jussie? "Fake attack."

Osundairo says after the attack, he and his brother flew to Nigeria. While there they Googled to find out if it was on the news. Q: Why did you do that?
A: I was curious.
Q: About what? You were there, right?
A: Media attention. Jussie wanted it. He got what he wanted "

"Allen is questioning Osundairo about the moment they flipped. They'd been arrested at O'Hare and held for 47 hours.
Q: After you told them this was all allegedly Jussie's fault, then they let you go right?
Yes sir.
They let you and your brother go, immediately right Yes sir. "

"Allen hammering Osundairo about whether he was motivated by money. After this happened all of a sudden you got a new trainer right?
No.
You've been shopping around book deals?
No
You said if Jussie gave you and your brother $1 million apiece you would not testify?
No."

"And that was it. Allen is done. Now on break before redirect "

Defense is asking Abel a series of questions to try and establish that Abel only wanted to be friends with Jussie Smollett to further his acting career. Abel says he just wanted to be friends with Jussie

Defense going through texts between Jussie and Abel about drugs. Abel testified that he would buy drugs for Jussie. Defense asking if Abel is a drug dealer.
@cbschicago

Shay Allen: You weren't Jussie's drug dealer, right? Abel: I was not

Defense describes a sexual relationship between Jussie and Abel. Abel Denies it.

Defense: Do you think it’s a crime to punch someone in the face? Abel: "Not if they ask you. Not if you’re acting."

Defense: You follow Jussie on Instagram? Abel: Not right now

Defense asked Osundairo if they attacked Jussie because they wanted to scare him into hiring them to work security for him.
@cbschicago
Defense has rested

It's hilarious! I would have a hard time not laughing out loud in the courtroom. Not a waste of the court's time though. Jussie needs to be held accountable for his actions.
I agree he does need to be held accountable for his actions. A fake hate crime is nothing to laugh about, but I am getting a few laughs about his 'attack'. :p

///BREAKING/// Prosecutors are calling Ola Osundairo to the witness stand in the #JussieSmollett trial

Ola, 30 testifies he graduated from high school at 16, went to college at Truman College and Quincy Univ. and earned his masters degree in finance. He's an aspiring actor. "Honestly, I've always loved cinema and once I started acting I was very good at it."

Ola says he's had some success acting and is still pursuing that dream. He appeared on "Empire" as the body guard for Chris Rock. Also had small roles on Chicago PD, Chicago Med and Chicago Fire.

Jury is shown a photo of Ola shirtless in a prison scene on the "Empire" set. Remarking on Ola's chiseled physique, prosecutor Sam Mendenhall says "I think I need to get to the gym more," as people in the gallery chuckle.

Ola testifies he met Jussie Smolett through his brother in 2018. They "hung out socially" a few times, mostly at clubs but also once at Smollett's apartment. He says they smoked pot in front of him but he doesn't drink or do drugs. "You take your fitness seriously?"
A: I do

Ola now testifying about "Team Abel," their fitness and nutrition planning business. So get ready for a lot of talk about tuna fish. Always right before lunch! "

Defense tried planting the idea that the brothers hated gay people and that was their motive. Special prosecutor ended his redirect by asking Abel about the time he and his brother participated in a gay pride parade float.

Older brother, Ola Osundairo, now on the stand. He is likely to face questions about his text messages that contain what the defense calls homophobic language. Defense trying to show that the brothers did not like gay people and that was the motive for the attack.

‘I am making this statement so everyone else knows. They will not get away with this’: Text from Jussie Smollett a focus trial's second day

As rumors of a hoax were swirling around Jussie Smollett’s claim he was the victim of a hate crime attack in downtown Chicago, the “Empire” actor allegedly sent a text to one of the two acquaintances being questioned by police.

"To this day, has Mr. Smollett ever come clean about this hate crime?” deputy special prosecutor Samuel Mendenhall asked Chicago police Detective Michael Theis.

“Not that I’m aware of,” Theis replied.

The timing of the text was crucial, as it could easily be construed as an attempt by Smollett to get the brothers to keep quiet.

“Brother....I love you,” read Smollett’s text to Abimbola Osundairo on the afternoon of Feb. 14, 2019. “I stand with you. I know 1000% you and your brother did nothing wrong and never would. I am making this statement so everyone else knows. They will not get away with this. Please hit me when they let you go. I am behind you fully.”

The text, which had never before been made public, was shown to jurors Tuesday on the second day of Smollett’s trial.

Testifying as the first witness for prosecutors, Chicago police Detective Michael Theis, one of the lead investigators on the Smollett case, noted the unusual nature of Smollett’s insistence that he was “making a statement” about the brothers’ innocence, which he had never done before publicly, either before or since.

Now on to Jan. 25, 2019. Ola says he was out getting mail when Jussie and his brother pulled up in Jussie's Mercedes. Jussie pulls him aside and asks, "Can I trust you?" Ola says he responded, "Yes, of course you can." And that's when Smollett told him about the fake attack plan "

Ola: Smollett "said he would want us to yell out racial and homophobic slurs at him. He wanted us to say, 'Aren't you that Empire f----t n----r?" and "This is MAGA country."
Q: And what did MAGA country mean?
A: "President Trump's slogan. Make America Great Again."

"Here's an interesting footnote: Ola says he and his brother were going to Nigeria to visit family and audition for a show called "Big Brother Naija" which is the Nigerian version of Big Brother. Turns out he starred in a different reality show: This case "

On the way to the "dry run" on Jan. 27, Ola says Smollett got more specific about their roles: "For me, he wanted me to put the noose around his neck and pour bleach on him, while my brother hit him and put the bruise on his face." Attorney: Lets unpack that right there….

"Ola says Smollett asked his brother to do the hitting because "He didn’t think that I would be able to hold my punches back." Ola also says he was uncomfortable with the original plan to pour gasoline because he "didn't think it was safe," so they switched to bleach. "

"We are on a lunch break, so break out your chicken thighs and tree bark supplements, folks. Back with more from Ola's direct testimony this afternoon. "

Hate Mail?
Sorry to interrupt the trial, but -
".... Smollett told police that he received "hate mail at his place of work" on Jan. 22, a week before the alleged attack took place."*
W a quick search to refresh my memory on this, I did not find much more about it, besides name-calling & slurs. Anything else, like envelope containing "white powder" or something like that?

Anyone have a link handy w more info? TiA

As far as I know, (without a link)..the FBI is currently the agency involved in that part of the investigation. It was mentioned briefly in the beginning of this trial.

I am still suspicious that he sent that letter to himself---but I thought the FBI would have been able to figure it out. He is not a criminal mastermind, as we have seen.

So maybe it was really sent by some nut job?

Jurors once again watching footage of the brothers at the beauty supply, buying materials -- including a red hat that Ola says they picked out because it was similar to a MAGA hat.

Ola testifies that he grabbed some bleach "that was laying around the house" and put it into a hot sauce bottle. They keep bleach around the house to do laundry, he testifies. (the defense has tried to insinuate that it was there because they were processing drugs.)"

"Prosecutor Mendenhall: "What, if anything, did you do with the rope?" Ola: "I pulled one of the strings out (of the packet) and made it look like a noose."

"During the actual encounter, Ola testifies, he wasn't quite able to put the rope around Smollett's neck - only around his face."

"Jurors viewed stills from surveillance video after the attack, which definitely show the rope looped around Smollett's neck. The insinuation here being, obviously, that Smollett pulled the rope around his neck himself after the brothers ran off."

"Ola testifies that neither he nor his brother were wearing white makeup that night. Smollett initially told police an attacker appeared white; one of his attorneys has speculated in the past that maybe the brothers had put on white makeup."

"It was, you might be surprised to learn, very cold that night. "It was very cold … it was super cold that night, I was freezing the whole time we were out there."
