A 76-year-old Minnesota man has been arrested in the stabbing death of a 15-year-old suburban Chicago girl nearly half a century ago, authorities said Friday.

The Naperville Police Department arrested Barry Lee Whelpley of Mounds View, Minnesota, on Wednesday for the 1972 slaying of Julie Ann Hanson. The retired welder, who was 27 at the time of the killing, has been charged with murder and was taken into custody in Minnesota, where he is awaiting extradition to Illinois. It wasn't clear whether he has an attorney.

Hurray for DNA and genetic genealogy analysis

The breakthrough in the case came through technological advancements in DNA and genetic genealogy analysis, police said.

"This horrific crime has haunted this family, this community and this department for 49 years," Naperville Police Chief Robert Marshall said. "The investigation and resulting charges were truly a team effort that spanned decades, and I could not be more proud of the determination and resourcefulness of our investigators, both past and present, who never gave up on Julie."

Wow! It may be late but I'm glad he's been identified and will be held accountable for her murder.

Yes! The main reason why I belong to Websleuths and am interested in True Crime is because I need to see wrongs righted. I need to see justice! And to see answers for the poor families that are left wondering for so many years. I hope this brings some peace to her family.

I always wonder if they really only did this once, since he seemingly got away with it. Was he really able to control his impulses after “succeeding” once? The same impulses that drove him to do it in the first place went away? Maybe he’ll talk and a few more will be solved.
All IMOO.

Charges filed, man arrested in Illinois girl's 1972 murder

.Police said DNA was the key to identifying Whelpley as a suspect. As a 27-year-old he lived about a mile from Hanson. One of his relatives apparently used a commercial DNA service to explore family history, which helped Dr. Colleen Fitzpatrick link him to a small sample of DNA from the crime scene. Naperville police took it from there.

I looked into Barry Whepley's background and his parents obituaries showed that the family were members of the Naperville Country Club and his father was on the board of directors at the club. Also his parents lived even closer to to Julie Hanson at 1108 Sweetbay Court (source DuPage County). Barry has a younger sister born the same year as Julie although she attended a private school and Julie was at Central High School. They possibly could have been friends from the neighborhood? Barry's younger brother was a doctor in Texas and is deceased.

Also his parents moved to Gun Barrel City, TX and had a home on Cedar Creek Lake from 1985 until recently (his mother passed in Jan 2021 and according to her obituary the family spent a lot of time there). Cold cases definitely during this time period need to be looked into it.

Okay - don't know if this is a typo for his next hearing, but if we have to wait 3 years until he comes to court - yikes!!

Commenting here to see if anyone has had any luck finding what year Whelpley moved to MN? This is important for a few cold cases I have been following in my city and subsequently where Whelpley was arrested. While a few of these cold cases are actively awaiting genetic geneology testing I have a few pieces of information that could potentially tie him to these cases or dismiss him. I don't put it out of the realm of possibility that he could be a multiple offender...
