The Argument in the Lobby

They argued about the bill at 3:27 AM. Schaefer was probably checking-in and he needed to produce Sheila's credit card for his room. Sheila knew by then that she paid $12,000 for Schaefer's business class plane ticket, so she told Mack and Schaefer to pay for the hotel.

Mack and Schaefer texted about the murder. Around 8 AM Mack was waiting for Sheila to fall asleep. They had a code, something like "saying hi" to mean they were murdering Sheila no matter what. At 10:30 AM, Mack answered a wake up call and declined coffee.

Has the autopsy report been released? Toxicology for pain killer overdose? Did she try and fail, or did she lie to Schaefer?

So they tried to get their passports, left out the back door and went to the airport. They were found in a hotel 6 miles away. Sounds like they had a good plan to fly out of Bali to Italy or France after leaving the suitcase in the taxi. Sheila kept them in the country.

"Wealthy socialite Sheila von Weise Mack had a blazing row with her daughter and the teenager's boyfriend over a hotel bill hours before her body was found crammed into a blood-stained suitcase on the holiday island of Bali.
...

Witnesses have told police that Mrs Mack, her 19-year-old daughter Heather and boyfriend Tommy Schaefer, 21, had a row at the reception desk of the luxury St Regis Hotel on Wednesday morning before her body was shuffled from the hotel in a silver suitcase.

Staff have told police that the three argued about who should pay the bill when they were due to check out on Thursday.
...

Witnesses reported that she and her mother were seen arguing on a number of occasions at the hotel, causing some staff to be concerned that the couple might even come to blows.

'The mother had all the appearances of one of our upmarket guests,' said a staff member, 'but the behaviour she and her daughter showed did not belong in our hotel.

Staff at the $650 St Regis hotel told of the strange behaviour of Miss Mack, who would instantly change from being friendly with them to storming around the opulent lobby and the pool area in an aggressive manner and glaring angrily at those who approached her.

According to a staff reconstruction of the argument, Mrs Mack, from Chicago, was seen pointing at Mr Schaefer, who had checked in after the couple earlier in the week, and telling her daughter:'I’ve paid for his flight here, so the two of you should pay for the hotel.'

The three of them left the lobby area after the row but a few hours later, at 11.26am, Ms Mack and Mr Schaefer arrived in the reception area with a large suitcase wrapped in a bed sheet, refusing to allow a porter to take it out to a waiting taxi."
...

After carrying the suitcase containing Mrs Mack’s body out to the taxi, Ms Mack and Mr Schaefer returned to the reception desk and said they would not be paying the bill - it would be taken care of by Mrs Mack when she checked out later.

But it is claimed they did ask for a safety deposit box, believed to contain Mrs Mack’s jewellery and their passports, to be opened and its contents given to them. The staff refused because they said Mrs Mack had left instructions that only she should be allowed to open it.

Ms Mack and Mr Schaefer said they had more bags to collect - but instead they went out through the back entrance and later ordered another taxi to take them to the airport.

This is new information to me. Glad that Sheila was able to keep them in the country. Did I read in one of these recent threads that Heather was adopted?

I’m not sure if Sheila’s siblings want to raise Stella. Think about it…the way they feel about HM and the short sentence she got for her mother’s murder, the constant manipulation HM has done, and all the battles and hearings about the trust. No matter if HM was to be sentenced here for life, she will always try to control this child with all the head games.

I still feel Stella deserves a life apart from everyone involved in this nightmare (agree with you @otto in your post above). She is 6 years old, first grade…before you know it, she will be a lot older and even more memories to have to be worked out with the help of the right therapist.

Sadly, I am afraid there will be many more hearings and fights about who will gain custody of this child.

This seems like the only option when strictly and exclusively considering the best interests of the child.

I wonder whether the foster mother, Mack and the lawyer are drawing up documents to transfer long term guardianship to the foster mother - also applying for the child to be re-admitted to Bali.

I read somewhere that Sheila's siblings have said they are unable to take her. They must be Sheila's age - understandable that they don't want to disrupt the next 20 years with a problem.

Perhaps Schaefer's mother should take the same position - that the child should be placed in a typical family with other young children. That's the best therapy for a homeless child.

I posted a link and quote upthread about information that was circulated in Chicago and Bali that she was an adopted child. I'm not sure that I believe it, as I thought that Heather Mack looked a lot like her mother. Sheila would have been in her 40s when Mack was born.

Trying to piece together the timeline, but it sounds like Schaefer arrived and checked-in shortly after midnight. For more than an hour, he tried contacting Mack. Around 1:45 AM she answered. She went to the 6th floor, where Schaefer had a room. They walked around for a while.

Sheila went to the lobby shortly after 3 AM. Perhaps she was worried because Mack was missing for a couple of hours. She must have learned from staff that her daughter was seen with Schaeffer. Sheila then specified that she alone could access all three passports.

Around 3:30 AM, Mack and Schaefer met Sheila at reception, where Sheila told them that because she paid the airfare, they would pay for Schaefer's room.

Mack and Schaefer had already decided to murder Sheila. Between 4 AM and 8AM, they discussed a failed attempt to sedate/ overdose Sheila. Schaefer involved his Chicago cousin in planning the murder. Between 8:50 AM and 11:30 AM they committed murder and cleaned up.

They took the suitcase to a taxi, then went to reception to request passports and state that Sheila would pay all costs. They were denied their passports.

Without their passports, thanks to Sheila, they were hooped. They still went to the airport, claimed their passports were stolen, and were referred to the Embassy to replace passports ... then they went to the seedy motel 6 miles away, where they were arrested.

Come to think of it, returning the child to her foster family will mostly negate any need for the years of therapy that Schaefer's mother has planned. The child will view Chicago as a weird mom vacation, then back to normal.

I think the foster family option should include adoption with full termination of contact between both parents and the child + foster parents. No updates, phone calls, photos, nothing.

I believe Osha is loyal the HM and as long as she has the money, HM will have access to her daughter one way or another.

That's a problem. If the foster mother cannot terminate all contact with Mack, Schaefer and their extended family, she is not the right candidate. Furthermore, we know that she cannot afford to raise the child. She's been accessing the trust for years.

That was definitely an assumption made by the reporter probably based on skin tone. HM looks just like her dad IMO, just a lighter skinned female version (google James L Mack)

Even though Stella has been living with Oshar, she has had consistent contact with HM... I'm sure the "not seeing her in 20 months" thing was just in person. If KW got Zoom time with her, I'm sure Heather did too. Before covid they had regular visits and plenty of excursions to the mall, the park, the beach etc.. so Stella knows who she is unfortunately. I really wish she would have been adopted out from the beginning.. But I would hate to see her go into foster care at this point, especially after being displaced from the only country she knows, and after being lied to about going on vacation. I don't see Oshar getting custody either since she's not a US citizen... but I could be wrong. I don't think Sheila's family wants to take her in either. I could imagine that would be hard.. at the very least considering how much she looks like HM.

I hate HM so much for all of this.

I agree that relationships between children and extended family are very important. However, I would like to know why the grandmother's son is currently suffering malnutrition in his Bali prison. He must rely on friends and family for support while in prison. Has she visited her son at any time other than when the child was born?

The situation in the men’s section of Kerobokan is VERY different than the women’s section. It appears that TS has opted not to live in the foreigner section of the prison. This may have saved him from scuffling with tough foreign prisoners in favor of mingling with the gentler Indonesian prisoners. As such, he seems to have found some kind of inner peace through religion but he is also subject to the problems faced by the people in the general population, illness and malnutrition from lack of food supplied by the prison. Not sure if he can receive funds from outside the country, how would he collect them? He obviously has no one in the country who have latched onto him as OS did with HM so how would funds and supplies get to him? KW is not wealthy by any means and can’t afford to go to Bali, she relied on a campaign launched by her friends to go when she did, but I’m sure she could afford to send some money each month to help him out if there was any guarantee he’d get it. He has had cell phones and may have one now but those would be easy for someone outside the country to pay for. TS was not living with KW when all this happened and they may not have been seeing eye to eye on things but he’s still her son and she doesn’t want him to suffer or die even though she also believes that he needs to do his time for what he did.

Sadly, I believe she just is after that trust fund.

That’s certainly possible. I would hope anyone whom Stella is placed with is fully vetted by CPS. I wish there was a stipulation that the trust would be completely off limits until Stella is 30. It would be interesting to see if she’d still be interested in becoming her guardian.

MOO

Sorry @otto I thought you were saying Stella might not remember the crazy lady who claimed to be her mom and took her to the States that one time LOL

I am. If someone does right by Stella today, Chicago could be nothing more than a weird early childhood memory. However, Stella belongs in the same country as her violent parents. She was born in prison to parents who are automatically deported to country of origin upon release. Mack and Schaefer are charged with conspiracy to commit international murder in the USA. They were not charged with this offence in Bali. I'm thinking that neither will ever be released from prison.

Therefore, a permanent solution for the prison-born homeless trust-fund child needs to be found. Sheila's siblings should have a say since it is their sister's inheritance legacy. Sheila's close friends can probably speak on her behalf. What would Sheila want for her granddaughter?

Could judge order Heather Mack released? Experts say odds are slim

The burden will be on Mack’s lawyers to convince the judge that arrangements can be made to protect the community from Mack and ensure her appearance at court hearings.

Former federal prosecutors who spoke to the Chicago Sun-Times said the chances of her release are slim.

That’s because the charges against Mack appear to carry a presumption of detention. Her lawyers would have to overcome that, arguing that arrangements can be made to protect the community from her and to ensure her appearance at future court hearings.

“She’s the model of instability right now,” said Megan Church, a former federal prosecutor now with MoloLamken LLP.

[...]

During Mack’s arraignment last week, lawyers discussed her detention hearing with Norgle, and a prosecutor referenced the many visits made by Oak Park police to the Mack home before von Wiese-Mack’s murder.

Von Wiese-Mack told police that Mack bit her repeatedly and punched her in her already broken ankle during an argument over household chores, the Sun-Times previously reported. In all, Oak Park police said in 2014 they were called 86 times in 10 years to the Mack home.

Steven Block, a former federal prosecutor now with Thompson Hine, said judges have “pretty wide discretion” when it comes to interpreting the law and evidence during a detention hearing like Mack’s. Still, he added, “this case is going to have some significant hurdles to overcome to convince a judge she should be released.”

Murder should be no-bail, and she's a substantial flight risk.

Mack is due back in court next Wednesday, 11/10/21 for a detention hearing. An initial hearing to discuss Kia Walker’s emergency request for visitation rights for Stella is scheduled to take place early next week.

Heather Mack waives detention hearing, will be held without bond on federal conspiracy charges stemming from mother’s Bali slaying

Lawyers for Heather Mack waived her right to a detention hearing Wednesday on federal murder conspiracy charges stemming from the 2014 slaying of her mother at a Bali vacation resort.

The decision means Mack, who was arrested by the FBI last week after being deported from Indonesia, will be held in custody while the charges are pending, though her lawyers could renew a request for bond at any point.

Agree. Unless there is something very bad discovered about the foster parents, sending the child back to the family and culture in which she has been raised seems the kindest and best solution. IMO.
