Ex-wife testifies during penalty phase

This afternoon, Susan Zoline testified as an expert in psychology ethics about what she thought UI counselors could've done. She said "optimal care was not provided" (1

Said she would've considered his case "serious" after his initial visit, but not an imminent threat and wouldn't have hospitalized him involuntarily (2/

But she said they could've asked if they could talk with his psychiatrist who was prescribing him medications he was abusing. (3

And she said they could've asked him for consent to notify the campus threat response team, though prosecutors said that could backfire. She said it could depend how it was presented to him. (4/11)

And she said they should have said, "here's your recommended treatment" instead of asking what treatment he prefers (5/11

And she said she would've reviewed the intern's assessment very closely bc the intern would be operating under her license. The counselors seemed unaware this morning of some of the more alarming parts of his interview with the intern. (6/11)

And she said their communications about follow up care should've mentioned his homicidal and suicidal thoughts, instead of just his alcohol and substance abuse. (7/11)

He did talk with someone nine days after first visit about his homicidal thoughts, but she said his subsequent missed meeting should've then been even more alarming. (8

She couldn't say the crime could've been prevented if he had better care, but said there's "a possibility that that could have been helpful and may have prevented the tragedy that occurred." (9/11

"I don't believe he received the help that he deserved and should've received," she concluded. (10/1

On cross, prosecution noted that she's being paid $250/hr to testify for the defense, trying to claim bias. In response, the defense noted $250/hr is low for an expert witness (11/11

Mental Health Counselors Testify About Treatment For Brendt Christensen
Judge Jim Shadid has said the sentencing phase could go to the jury next week. But first, defense attorneys plan to have Christensen’s mother and sister testify. The defendant’s father, Mike Christensen, gave emotional testimony earlier this week.

wow, they are bringing his mum in to testify. I wonder whether this was the plan all along?

Christensen first visited the counseling center in March 2017. In his initial assessment, the intern noted he had suicidal and homicidal thoughts—including issues with substance abuse. He told her his wife was asking for a divorce and she was his only support.

After the first session, the intern reached out to another counselor for help saying Christensen mentioned he was suicidal. A crisis manager also got involved from the counseling center.

ne UI counselor focused on Christensen’s alcohol abuse. They met to discuss his issues and then referred them to Rosecrance, but according to his lawyers he never went.

Another UI Counselor focused on Christensen’s homicidal thoughts. He told them it was only fantasies and returned the items he bought. In the counselor’s opinion, he believed Christensen was doing better. They then set another meeting for April, which never happened.

The defense then called a clinical psychology expert who said in her opinion there should’ve been more “intensive care” done by the UI Counseling Center because Christensen showed what she thought was a “significant risk” to himself and others.

  1. The government did note she is being paid for her testimony.

Ahhh. The infamous 20/20 hindsight " expert ". Perhaps she could elucidate us on what we coulda-shoulda done about Hitler.

I’m not going to lie I did t follow this case closely. Did he out right name and threaten YingYing or just vaguely stated homicidal ideations?

her testimony was based on the counseling centre's records acc to BZ...
They did not submit all their records and rightly so... Patient confidentiality is sacrosanct..
They did answer what they were asked, however. See court listener for details..

It's hard to know how today went down with jurors. Impossible, in fact.
I dont believe this mornings' witnesses brought anything good for BC, including Michelle's testimony..
Zoline was one of their jewels.
Next they have BC's sister and his mother to testify. Not today though...

I may well be blinkered but I'm not seeing any mitigating factors worthy of consideration by a juror or the entire jury.
It's possible a few more hyper tearful family testimonies will help his case but Zoline is reading weak.. to me.
What do others see?

You wanna head down old Johnson Ross bldg again Trunk, we'll do it in the ethers, dead of night.. @altojack @Niner @anybody else who wants to come along

No. he did not name anybody in his therapy sessions, just vaguely alluded to a type. By 'type' he meant small, easily managed. He was a big guy.
He admitted killing YY in the tape recording of the Vigil march to his then girlfriend who testified. He has been convicted of murder. This is just the penalty phase where his defense are attempting to prove that mitigating factors should save his life.
I'm not sure how successful they are because the court is closed and no electronic devices are permitted indoors.
There are very few journalists reporting and that's done in bouts in between sessions.

It is rather interesting how BC's visit to the counseling center (1 single visit I believe) not only didn't help him (to be expected from a single visit) but his behavior really ramped up a couple of weeks after his second visit. It's like he went on a free fall right after his visit. April 2017 seems to have been a turning point for BC:

1) Bullis met Christensen through an online dating website in April 2017
2) On April 11, he creates a Fet Life account.
3) On April 16, he googles "serial killer list America" and visited the Wikipedia page on the list of serial killers ranked by the number of victims.
4) On April 16, 2017 (Same day), he also downloads four images of bound and gagged women and placed them in a hidden directory on his computer.
5) On April 17, he googles "flogging."
6) On April 18, he visits Fet Life pages on perfection abduction fantasies and abduction 101, and googles abduction play
7) On April 22, 2017, Christensen exchanged messages with another user on about planning a sexual encounter that involved him abducting her from her home. Christensen, who was responding to a post, told the other user he would break into her house and be waiting for her, and then would jump her when she least expected it, binding her, gagging her and then putting her in a duffel bag and into his car.
8) On April 23, he looks up knife sharpening on YouTube and Google. (Although MZ testified she asked him to sharpen the knives in the house)
9) On April 24, he texts his girflriend that he wants company and asks her to describe what she thinks the most horrific act is. She said she finds torture and gang rape unpleasant
10) On April 25, he texts his girlfriend that he’s drinking and driving past a cop, but that the cop won’t do anything. "I would never do anything so dumb I go to jail, though that would be very interesting."
11) On April 28, 2017, Christensen texted his girlfriend that he bought a bed restraint, a blindfold and a gag and told her, "You'll be the first to actually use these."

Day 4: FBI probing suspect’s claim that U of I Chinese scholar was 1 of 13 victims
Accused U. of I. killer Brendt Christensen’s online life detailed in court: ‘I don’t care how I am remembered, just that I am’

I mean, he had just been to the counseling center in March 30 allegedly to save his marriage. I don't get it. Not even one more visit? One more?

Vague intentions. He did not know Yingying. She was a random target of opportunity. He saw her chasing after a bus while driving by, came back to the area and found her waiting at another bus stop.
