That's right Reb, animal food is crap and is the reason dogs and cats die with things like kindey failure going on

Better doing what PD does and cook it yourself, your animals will live longer and have a better quality of life.
Barley is a good filler to go with the veg and meat

:banghead: :furious:

Well I'm glad I don't give my dogs pigs ears.. I do give them rawhide bones to chomp on though.. I sure hope they don't come up with a recall on those

Our Bichon loves pigs ears, but he doesn't eat them so much as he worries about where to "bury" them. He's so funny. I guess I will take up the ones that he's hidden around the house and throw them out, along with the big full bag of the rest.

but to be fair... anything could happen anytime, even with better quality foods, so i'm knocking on wood here.
still, chances are much higher that these things would happen with crappy cheap dog food.

btw.. for anyone who doesn't know yet what goes into your pet's food.. do some research.. there's lots of info out there now, so it's no secret anymore. there's a reason so many dogs & cats have been dying at age 8 or 10 with all kinds of degenerative diseases and other problems... when technically, they can live a lot longer & healthier life (as long as nothing else happens or they don't get cancer, which can be totally random).. it's the same thing with people.. eat junk food all your life and you're gonna look like hell & start falling apart at age 35.

people say they can't afford to feed their pets better food.. well, you can't afford tons of vet bills as they get older either, right?

Did you check the recall list? Many of the foods are very pricey high quality foods frequently recommended by vets.

I<snip>What the heck are they doing getting wheat gluten from CHINA?? Saving money?? In the long run it certainly didn't save them any money, it will likely ruin them. Why not buy wheat from AMERICAN suppliers and farmers??????? :banghead: :furious:

AMEN!

We are Wheat farmers, and we had one of our cats just recently die from consuming tainted food. My first thought was WHY are you putting Wheat gluten in CAT food when they are carnivores, and why in the H*ll are you buying it from CHINA. Heck, many humans can't tolerate wheat gluten.

Smokey the cat was recently neutered, and during his recovery I bought him some special kitty wal-mart wet pouch food because I felt sorry for him, A trip to the vet is a scarey ordeal for a farm kitty. We fed him away from the other cats so he wouldn't be nudged out. Within a few days he was so weak he couldn't stand up. The Vet said it was kidney failure, and asked if he had got into mouse poison. We don't set out poison, we have cats for the mice as well as kids and dogs, chickens & ducks. This was in Late February before all this came up. My hubby was blaming the Vet, but she has taken care of all our animals and has always been great, I knew it had to be something else. I'm just glad the others where fed their regular diet of dry cat chow.

Please be careful with those rawhide bones. Dogs have been known to gnaw pieces off and choke to death on them. It happened to my little maltese but thankfully I noticed in time and was able to pull it out of her throat. Thank goodness it didn't happen while I was away from home.

I love the new food I'm feeding my pets...no wheat gluten or corn meal :)

We give rawhide to Josie, too. I know it's not the best thing for her, but she loves it. We only give it to her when we're around. She's tried to eat it really fast before and darn near choked on it.

Sorry to hear about your kitty!!

What bothers me is that we are so mislead in the labeling. It says "Made in the USA". So I think I'm buying US products, stuff that is grown here! It's not like we need to improt wheat when we've got folks like you and your hubby who are wheat farmers!! The food isn't even made here! It's made in Canada, with products from China! At least that's what it sounds like to me. I've been known to be wrong before.

Who probably get paid to do so.

The only way you know exactly what your pets are getting is if you make their food yourself.

Ok, now the FDA is saying no rat poison, but the chemical used to make the plastic melamine???? What the %#^&!!!! What's really making me beyond angry is that they are saying that this wheat gluten was shipped to a pet food company that manufactures dry food, but they won't tell us who!!!! Why not?? This is outrageous! We deserve to know who this was shipped to! We deserve to know, we have the right to know what we are feeding are pets and where this wheat gluten was shipped. This is getting out of control!

I was hesitant to give them rawhide because I've heard they can choke as well.. I asked my vet about it and he said that it's ok but to keep an eye on them and to make sure the rawhide doesn't get too small.. I only give them these when I'm in the room with them. Boy, having these two doggies sure cause me worry.. hehe They get into EVERYTHING especially the Shih Tzu.. I'm always taking something out of her mouth.. :banghead: :blowkiss:

Hi KrisNine :blowkiss: I read that today and it makes me mad.. You are so right, we have a right to know what company this stuff was shipped to. I really have been making my dogs home made food.. I have a bag of Dick VanPatten dry food and they seem to be ok with that, though I don't think they actually like it. They love the home made food I've been giving them. Hubby said the other night that the dogs eat better than he does.. hehe... I boiled a whole chicken with carrots and celery and cut up the chicken and put them in freezer bags that way the dogs have food for the week. They like this better than the dry food.. hehe

Sounds like we're twins. We do the same on our farm. Took back our farm ground we rent out and are not plowing up the wheat. Fellow won't pay rent due. We'll let cattle graze until it begins to head.

We also have the chickens and ducks as well as horses and cattle. Outside cats get inexpensive dry food. Never feed wet or moist food, per our vet. Two inside cats get Science Diet dry food. It make a big difference in the litter box. Smaller, firm droppings. Our four dogs get only Science Diet dry food. They work and deserve the best nutrition we can provide.

I certainly hope the problems don't include this high price dry food. So far, all are healthy and happy.

Hi PaperDoll :blowkiss: !

This is so frustrating, huh?? It's making me so angry. I can't believe they are withholding this info from us. It's not fair. It's just not. We should know every manufacturer that has received this wheat gluten. It's only fair.

Josie loves the Dick Van Patten, although it makes her a little more gassy . Just what we needed, a Lab with more gas!!

She loves the homemade food I give her, too. It's chicken thighs, with basmati rice, oatmeal, carrots, peas and a little chicken stock. She just loves it.

The dog that died of mine was eating the wet food.

The OTHER four (now five) dogs all have been eating Old Roy (cheap) dog food from WalMart (same brand as the recalled wet food) this entire time and ALL of them are fine.

So, if you HAVE to feed your dog dog food, at least I know for SURE that WalMart brand Old Roy dog food is safe.

And, Alpo's website says they are not involved in the recall.

Good that your other dogs haven't gotten sick. I think the canned foods in question was "cuts in gravy". This whole thing has probably gotten pet owners to take notice that maybe there is no difference in the "cheap" vs "premium" brand dog foods. They're made at the same place with the same ingredients.

I am thanking God for my stingy-ness. Before all this happened, I was starting to feel guilty for always feeding my cats the cheap stuff and my dogs homemade. I had just about decided to mortgage the house and invest in some Iams or Eukanuba for them. I'm so glad my stingy-ness won out. They are all fine.
The homemade food you make is probably the best food for them!

KrisNine, maybe try putting a little "Beano" on her food, it will make her less gassy. It works for me when I know certain foods gets mine gassy...2 Danes in my bed with the farts ain't a lot of fun!

That's a good idea, thanks SadieMae! She has a stinky butt!
