Monday, April 3rd:
*Initial Hearing (@ 9:45am CT) – IN - *Charles Ray Hanish (49) (March 17, 2019 found in his home, Reynolds) - *Garrett Kenneth Kirts (21 @ time of crime/25) indicted & charged (2/28/23) with murder, auto theft (theft of entire automobile) & theft. Serving a 55 year sentence in New County for Bowen murder.
White County prosecutor Bob Guy confirmed that he’s waiting for Kirts’ trial to wrap up in Newton County before filing any charges connected to Hanish’s death in Reynolds. He declined to give many details, other than to say witnesses tied to the Newton County death of Nicole Bowen have cooperated in the White County investigation also. Hanish was originally thought to have died of natural cause. Investigators say his body had been there for few days before its discovery. According to Hanish’s death certificate, release by the White County coroner, his manner of death is now listed as homicide”, & the cause of death is listed as ‘asphyxia due to ligature strangulation’.
2/24/23 Update: Kirts, who is serving a 55-year sentence for the strangulation of Nicole Bowen in Newton County will be formally charged with Hanish’s murder next week White County prosecutor Mark Delgado said. On Thursday, a grand jury met in the White County courthouse to hear evidence in the 2019 murder of Hanish, whose body was found in his apartment in March of 2019 & whose death was ruled a homicide due to strangulation. Hanish was an RN & was working in a nursing home at the time of his death.
2/28/23 Update: Charging information filed & charged with murder, auto theft (of entire auto) & theft. Appearance filed. Indictment filed. Probable cause found: Order issued. Clerk issued summons for defendant via regular mail. Judicial officer Jason A. Thompson. 3/13/23: Summons for defendant returned via 1st class mail for "refused". Initial hearing scheduled on 4/3/23 @ 9:45am.
