A post-mortem examination of a primary school teacher in Ireland has revealed she was strangled to death.

Ashling Murphy, 23, was killed on Wednesday afternoon along the banks of the Grand Cana in Tullamore, County Offaly.

Officers believe she put up a brave fight, but added that Ashling may have been stalked prior to her death.

''Rallies and vigils will be staged across Ireland and the UK over the weekend, including in Dublin, Limerick, Belfast, Derry and London, with thousands expected to attend. Senior politicians expressed their alarm and solidarity.

In London, a vigil will be held at the London Irish Centre in Camden Town on Saturday at 4pm.

“My thoughts tonight are with the family of the young woman killed in a truly shocking crime, with her friends and with her community,” Helen McEntee, Ireland’s minister for justice, tweeted. “The gardaí will investigate this awful crime and ensure justice is done.”

“The whole country is shocked and devastated at the horrific murder of … Ashling Murphy while going for a run. Her family, friends, colleagues and the children she taught are in our thoughts this morning,” Michelle O’Neill, Stormont’s deputy first minister, said on Twitter. “Violence against women and girls must be stopped.”

Murphy’s mother, Kathleen, told the Mirror: “The last thing she’d say in the morning going out was ‘Mam, I love you’.”

Looking through the media today it appears that they have a guy with the bike on CCTV in town centre. He then turns up in a Dublin hospital with unexplained injuries.

Two properties connected with this person have been searched. In South Dublin and outside Tullamore. Also a woman has come forward who was approached and followed by a man on the same stretch of pathway. This was 2 hours before the cowardly attack on brave Ashling.

It appears that Ashling was brave and put up a fight against this sub human coward.

The footage of the unidentified male — taken in Tullamore on the day Ashling was viciously killed — is currently being examined by the investigation team.

It was passed to gardai by a member of the public.

Although cops appealed for information on the bike’s owner on Wednesday night, no one has come forward to say it belongs to them.

They received the image after the popular primary school teacher was killed in a random attack as she went for a jog along a canal in Tullamore, Co Offaly, at around 4pm on Wednesday.

Despite putting up a brave fight, talented trad musician Ashling, 23, lost her fight for life due to the barbaric assault she suffered.

The distinctive bike was recovered close to the canal bank at Cappincur, in Tullamore, on Wednesday night and is still being examined by gardai for DNA and fingerprints.

New suspect in Ashling Murphy murder inquiry presented to hospital with injuries (irishtimes.com)
''A new suspect identified by gardaí investigating the murder of Ashling Murphy in Co Offaly is due to be interviewed by detectives when he is deemed well enough by the medical staff who were treating him for a number of injuries on Friday night.

The man went to a Dublin hospital for treatment late on Thursday. When gardaí learned of his presence there, as well as the nature of his injuries and the fact they were unexplained, they carried out checks into his background. He was being monitored by gardaí on Friday night.

It was not not clear when he would be physically and mentally assessed for interview but gardaí were hopeful that would happen imminently.

The Irish Times understands the new suspect has lived in south Dublin and in the midlands, where he has family members.''

''Garda sources said the quality of the forensic evidence, including DNA, gathered during the first 24-48 hours of the investigation represented a significant “breakthrough” in the case.''

From the article posted by Dotta above:

“…a new suspect in the murder case is said to have turned up at a hospital with facial wounds which staff believe were 'inflicted by someone defending themselves'.

“Staff at the unnamed hospital in Dublin told police the man arrived at the casualty department on Thursday night with severe facial injuries, the Times reported.

“He is alleged to have travelled there from Tullamore. Officers remain at the hospital.”

IF this suspect turns out to be the right man, AND his wounds were inflicted by AM, then it sounds as though she put up one hell of a fight, bless her.

Regardless, such a sad incident. RIP.

Why would he go to hospital and expose himself is beyond me!
He might be someone with mental problems.

Anyone including women and children can absolutely tear lips, nostrils, eyelids, ears etc if they can get their hands onto an attacker's face. I bet that, while actually having been strangled, she was initially reported as having been beaten to death because her head and face were covered by this guy's blood. Good for her. It may not have saved her life but it will get her justice.

And also suggests there'd be good forensic evidence that could be used to secure a conviction.

Quite possibly, though they’re also described as “severe” and the suspect remains in hospital 2 nights later (rather than discharged and moved into custody for questioning, say) which might suggest the injuries simply may not have healed without medical attention.

Well, he simply served himself on a plate to Police.
Not that I'm complaining!

Maybe an eye injury?
It is very probable.
A person fighting for her/his life can get extraordinarily strong and cause serious damage to the attacker.

The perp seemed "desperate" to find a victim - psychosis?

It was reported that he tried to attack another woman 2 hours earlier (in one the links above).
