Grand Central Terminal closes because of protest

Grand Central Terminal, the historic train station in Midtown Manhattan, was closed tonight because of "protest activity."

The closure was announced on the social media platform X, by city emergency notification officials at 6:08 p.m. The circa-1913 transportation hub is normally open until 2 a.m. nightly.

The New York Police Department's office of the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information said it was too early for crowd estimates or arrest figures, if there were any.

It wasn't immediately clear what protest prompted the closure. At least one pro-Palestinian rally was scheduled for this afternoon.

Gaza’s largest hospital being bombarded, WHO says

The largest hospital in Gaza, where up to 50,000 people are sheltering, is facing bombardment, the World Health Organization has said, as the US’s top diplomat said “far too many Palestinians have been killed” in the war.

Palestinian officials said Israel launched airstrikes on or near four hospitals and a school on Friday, killing at least 22 people. The bombardment came as the territory’s precarious health system struggled to cope with thousands of people wounded or displaced in Israel’s war against Hamas militants.

Graphic daytime videos posted online appeared to show screaming and bloodied people, including children, in the grounds of al-Shifa hospital in the heart of Gaza City. The Reuters news agency said it had verified the footage and that one person had died. Another video, filmed at night-time, reportedly showed the aftermath of an earlier attack.

The US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, said that he welcomed Israel’s agreed four-hour humanitarian pauses in its Gaza offensive, but that more needed to be done.

“Far too many Palestinians have been killed. Far too many who suffered these past weeks, and we want to do everything possible to prevent harm to them and to maximise the assistance that gets to them,” he said.

Margaret Harris, a WHO spokesperson, said 20 hospitals in Gaza were out of action and that there was “intense violence” at Shifa. “I haven’t got the detail on al-Shifa but we do know they are coming under bombardment,” she said.

Harris said there was also “significant bombardment” on Rantisi hospital, the only hospital providing paediatric services in north Gaza. She said children had been receiving care such as dialysis and life support – “things that you cannot possibly evacuate them safely with”. The hospital was surrounded by Israeli armoured vehicles on Friday, according to the Agence France-Presse news agency.

At the same briefing, the UN humanitarian office spokesperson Jens Laerke said: “If there is hell on earth today, its name is northern Gaza. It is a life of fear by day and darkness at night and what do you tell your children in such a situation, it’s almost unimaginable – that the fire they see in the sky is out to kill them?”

The Palestinian Red Cross said Israeli snipers shot at al-Quds hospital, to the south of Gaza City, and that there were violent clashes, with one person killed and 28 wounded, most of them children.

“Israel is now launching a war on Gaza City hospitals,” said Mohammad Abu Selmeyah, the director of Shifa.

The Red Cross said medical facilities and workers in Gaza needed to be protected, warning the health system in the territory had “reached a point of no return”.

“The destruction affecting hospitals in Gaza is becoming unbearable and needs to stop,” William Schomburg, head of the ICRC sub-delegation in Gaza, added on Friday.

Meet the Christian Cowboys defending Israel's heartland

These boys are the real deal.

Fifteen American Christian cowboys with their wide-brimmed hats, denim shirts, tight Wrangler jeans, leather belts with large buckles, and well-worn boots have come to Israel to protect the Jewish residents of the biblical heartland – Judea and Samaria.

"We want to live for Israel; that is our goal," said 24-year-old Yosef Strain from Montanna, his voice carrying a subtle twang.

Saudi Arabia will host a Joint Arab Islamic Extraordinary Summit on Saturday in response to the "unprecedented circumstances in Gaza," according to a statement released by the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs early Saturday local time.

Saudi Arabia was initially going to host Arab and Islamic Summits separately on Saturday but has decided to combine the two after consultations with the League of Arab States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

"A retail chain failure.

'Merry Christmas with Ham-mas'

View attachment 459722

Kmart Australia, a chain of department stores owned by Wesfarmers from Melbourne, suffered a setback in connection with its Christmas promotional campaign.

A ham bag with a very unfortunate inscription became the subject of a scandal on social media.

Jewish organizations in Australia reacted.

The packaging for a Christmas food product raised eyebrows.
The bag decorated with Christmas tree motifs has a large inscription

'Merry HAM-MAS'

on one side and instructions on how to keep the ham fresh for longer on the other.

After a complaint from the Australian Jewish Association to the management of the Kmart retail chain, the packaging was immediately withdrawn.

The owner officially apologized, but the bad taste remained.

Failure of an Australian retail chain

The organization described its observations related to this PR failure on social media, on the X platform.
The post included a photo of the controversial project.

It was politely suggested

'to correct the error and refrain from advertising this project on the Internet due to the unintentional similarity to Hamas, which is a banned terrorist group in Australia and several other countries',

wrote the Jews of the Australian association.

'Although this is potentially funny, it really doesn't look good.
We suspect that some product manager may have embarrassed the company'.

'We made a mistake and we sincerely apologize.
We clearly did not consider all the consequences when designing this product',
Kmart wrote on its website."

From my country's MSM

More here:

To be fair, the design was, likely, conceptualized, rendered and ordered way before October 7. And before October 7, most of us would barely give a thought to any alliteration between Christmas and Ham-mas. Also, Australian humor is pretty unique. There is a lot of real anti-semitism in the world, but I would not put AU K-mart promotional campaign into that category. Just bad timing for them..

Estimated 30,000 people fled northern Gaza Friday as situation worsens, UN group says

An estimated 30,000 people fled the areas north of Wadi Gaza — a waterway bisecting the center of the strip — to head southward on Friday, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has said early Saturday.

The displaced population fled on foot or used donkey carts when the evacuation corridor the Israeli military had announced along Salah Ad Deen Road opened until 4 p.m. local time Friday, the UN body said in a statement.

U.S. trying to help get fuel to Gaza hospitals, top diplomat tells U.N.

A top U.S. official at the United Nations told the U.N. Security Council today that the U.S. has been working to help get fuel to hospitals in Gaza.

“We know that hospitals are in desperate need of fuel. The United States has been working tirelessly to put in place mechanisms to enable the fuel to reach hospitals and to meet other urgent needs in the south,” said Robert Wood, a U.S. representative in the United Nations. “But I also want to make clear that we share Israel’s concerns about Hamas’ hoarding and siphoning of fuel in northern Gaza. This is unacceptable, and we must all call it out.”

Heavy security in Kosovo ahead of Israel soccer game

As Israel’s footballers prepare to play Kosovo in a Euro 2024 qualifier tomorrow — their first international fixture since the war broke out in the country in October — Pristina police are on alert after a series of social media posts calling for the game to be canceled.

Although a vast majority of Kosovo citizens are Muslim, it considers itself the most pro-US state in the world and firmly adheres to its most important ally’s foreign policy.

However, after dozens of messages criticizing Israel’s military campaign in Gaza began to circle social media under the hashtag #BabyKillersAreNotWelcomedHere, Kosovo police tell local media that they have been “increasing security measures” so that the game “goes as smoothly as other sport events.”

West Bank Palestinians face increasing restrictions and settler violence as Gaza war escalates

From CNN's Ivana Kottasová and Adi Koplewitz

[…]

After Hamas launched its terror attack on Israel on October 7, killing more than 1,400 people and kidnapping some 240 others, Israel stepped up its security measures and began severely restricting the freedom of movement of Palestinian residents of the West Bank.

CNN has asked Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) for comment on the increased restrictions, but has not received a response.

Israel controls all entry and exit points to the West Bank through roadblocks and checkpoints which are staffed by soldiers and armed police. The security forces have always had the ability to close these checkpoints without warning but, since October 7, the closures have been more frequent and have lasted longer, residents and human rights watchdogs say.

[…]

As part of the Oslo Accords, Israel agreed to gradually transfer control over the West Bank to the Palestinian Authority, but that has not happened. Instead, dozens of Israeli settlements have been built in the West Bank, encroaching into land that Palestinians, along with the international community, view as territory for a future Palestinian state.

Approximately 500,000 Israeli Jewish settlers now live in the West Bank, according to Peace Now, an Israeli group that advocates for peace and monitors settlements. Many of these settlements are heavily guarded, fenced-off areas that are completely off limits to Palestinians.

Most of the world considers these settlements illegal under international law and Israel has been criticized for allowing their expansion – and, in some cases, supporting them with tax breaks and state-funded security. Israel views the West Bank as “disputed territory,” and contends its settlement policy is legal.

[…]

The areas around these settlements have always been prone to violence, but the situation has worsened in recent months.

More than 170 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since October 7, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah. That’s more than were killed across the whole of 2022 by Israeli forces, according to UN figures.

[…]

The spiralling violence has prompted international outcry, including from Volker Turk, the UN high commissioner for human rights.

“I appeal as a matter of urgency for Israeli authorities to take immediate measures to take steps to ensure the protection of Palestinians in the West Bank who are being on a daily basis subjected to violence from Israeli forces and settlers, ill treatment, arrests, evictions, intimidation and humiliation,” Turk said.

According to the UN, since October 7, nearly 1,000 Palestinians from at least 15 herding communities have been forced from their homes by settlers.

“In the context of the coercive environment they live in, the displacement of these communities may amount to the forcible transfer of the population, which is a grave breach of the Fourth Geneva Convention,” Turk said, adding: “Continued, widespread impunity for such violations is unacceptable, dangerous and it is in clear violation of Israel’s obligation under international human rights law.”

IDF responds to CNN questions regarding tanks surrounding hospitals in the Gaza Strip

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has responded to CNN questions regarding tanks surrounding the Al Nasr and Al Rantisi Pediatric Hospitals, saying that it is currently “engaged in intense battle against Hamas" and is "unable to address" the queries.
The director of the two hospitals in northern Gaza, Mustafa al-Kahlout, told CNN on Friday that the health facilities had been surrounded by tanks, leaving staff members no way to leave.
Responding to CNN's enquiries, the IDF said: “Given that your question relates to specific military activity currently underway, we are unable to address or confirm specific queries."
On Friday, al-Kahlout asked for the Red Cross to assist with an evacuation.
“We are completely surrounded, there are tanks outside the hospital, and we cannot leave,” he said.
