'US does not want to see fire fights at hospitals' - national security adviser

An update now on the US reaction to the fighting reported around Al-Shifa hospital, the largest in Gaza.

Israel has been accused of attacking the facility, something it denies. Humanitarian organisations describe a dire situation for patients and staff - including two premature babies reportedly dying.

Speaking to CBS, the BBC's US partner, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan noted Israeli concerns that Hamas was using hospitals and other civilian infrastructure "for command and control, for weapons storage, [and] to house its fighters". Hamas denies this.

"That being said... the United States does not want to see fire fights in hospitals, where innocent people, patients receiving medical care, are caught in the crossfire," he said.

Mr Sullivan went on to talk about the role of the US in negotiating the release of hostages captured by Hamas, some of whom are US citizens.

He said negotiations were "under way between Israel and Qatar, who is communicating with Hamas" and that the US is "very much involved in those discussions".

The hospital needs to start publicly 'outing' Hamas and demand that they return what they stole from the UNWRA and have stolen since then.
Why does Israel have to keep supplying them when they (UN, UNWRA, hospital employees, Palestinian Red Crescent, etc.) know who has the supplies ?
Confront Hamas. Demand the return of the supplies they've hoarded.
Shout it in the streets if they have to.
This is not Israel's fault.

Eta : After seeing evidence that there is electricity, the claims made by this Dr. Saada are dubious at best.
Omo.
I'm thankful there is some doctor care still available and I have no way of knowing that they are privy to what Hamas is up to. Blessing to these doctors that put their life on the line to help others.

WHO says situation 'dire and perilous' after re-establishing contact with Al-Shifa

As we’ve been reporting throughout the day, international organisations have been struggling to make contact with staff at the Al-Shifa hospital, where there is now thought to be a near-complete loss of power.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said earlier today that it had lost communication with contacts at the site, and this evening Doctors Without Borders said it had been unable to contact its own staff there since last night (see our last post).

However, WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has now said the body has been able to re-establish contact.

“@WHO has managed to get in touch with health professionals at the Al-Shifa hospital in #Gaza,” he said in a post on social media.

But he added that "constant gunfire and bombings in the area have exacerbated the already critical circumstances" and that the "number of patient fatalities has increased significantly"."Regrettably, the hospital is not functioning as a hospital anymore," he said.

He said the situation was "dire and perilous".

“The world cannot stand silent while hospitals, which should be safe havens, are transformed into scenes of death, devastation, and despair."

Summary

It is 1am in Gaza and Tel Aviv. Here is where the day stands:

  • In an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria on Sunday, UN secretary general Antonio Guterres said that Israel cannot use Hamas’s October 7 attacks as “reason for collective punishment of the Palestinian people.” “You need to be able to distinguish Hamas from the Palestinian people. And so you cannot use the horrific things that Hamas did as a reason for collective punishment of the Palestinian people,” Guterres said.
  • The World Health Organization has managed to get in touch with healthcare workers at Gaza’s al Shifa hospital where thousands of Palestinians, including critically injured ones, are sheltering as the Israeli military encircles the hospital. In a statement on Sunday, WHO chief Tedros Ghebreyesus called the situation “dire and perilous.”
  • US secretary of state Antony Blinken has spoken with the Qatari prime minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani on efforts to expand humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza. They also spoke of ensuring the safe passage of foreign nationals and the critically wounded out of the war-torn strip, Blinken said in a tweet on Sunday.
  • German chancellor Olaf Scholz said Sunday he opposed an “immediate” ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, as calls multiply globally to halt the conflict. “I don’t think the calls for an immediate ceasefire or long pause – which would amount to the same thing – are right,” Scholz said in a debate organised by the German regional daily Heilbronner Stimme, Agence France-Presse reports.
  • Medecins Sans Frontieres said on Sunday that it has not been able to contact its staff in Gaza’s Al Shifa hospital since last night. “Other MSF colleagues living in Gaza city reported that the hostilities around Al-Shifa have not stopped. We are worried for their lives,” the humanitarian organization said.
  • Regional directors of Unicef, UN Population Fund and the World Health Organization are calling for “immediate action to halt attacks on healthcare in Gaza.” “Attacks on medical facilities and civilians are unacceptable and are a violation of international humanitarian and human rights law and conventions… The right to seek medical assistance, especially in times of crisis, should never be denied,” they said.
  • US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said the US does not believe Israel intends to re-occupy Gaza after its ongoing war with Hamas. “This is not our understanding of the Israel government’s position,” said Sullivan, his words in apparent contrast to Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu who told separately CNN, “The first thing we … will do … [is] destroy Hamas. The second thing we have to understand is that there has to be an overriding and overreaching Israeli military envelope.”
  • State-run Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has signed a $1.2bn deal to supply air defense systems to Israel’s military, the company said on Sunday, citing the country’s war with Hamas in Gaza, Reuters reports. “IAI finds itself in an accelerated mode to supply systems and solutions for Israel’s defense establishment, for all theaters of operation, whether sea, ground, air or space,” IAI said, noting the deal was with the defense ministry.

In a webinar call with the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund on Sunday, British-Palestinian plastic surgeon

49m ago

In a webinar call with the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund on Sunday, British-Palestinian plastic surgeon Ghassan Abu Sittah delivered a harrowing testimony from Gaza on the rapidly deteriorating healthcare system in the strip.

In an emotional call, Abu Sittah said:

He added:

Wonder if he also mentioned there is no signs of HAMAS giving up any time soon so that this hospital and others can get the much needed supplies brought in safely? Did he also say if only HAMAs would give up the hostages it has taken so that Israel would stop? Why is it only mentioned that Israel is doing this.. HAMAS is doing plenty as well and even shooting and harming their own people. Many of those patients he's seeing, aren't even being injured by Israel's bombs. Why is it up to Israel to do something or not do something? Why isn't anyone in any of these hospitals asking for HAMAS to give up the hostages, for them to surrender so this will stop? No, just blaming Israel and making all these claims of what Israel has done when they do not know what is a result of Israel and what is a result of HAMAS.

Nobody wants babies to die. I wish the world would be as concerned about the 240+ hostages that HAMAS took. What is happening to them? We have no idea because HAMAS isn't saying and there is no access to them. So Israel just should stop to protect those in this hospital, but not worry about the 240 innocent civilian hostages that were taken on Oct 7th.

The deaths of babies, children both Israeli and Palestinian are DISGRACE

Shame!!!

My Opinion :(
It is an absolute disgrace which is why so many countries are wanting a war crime investigation to include Israel. This could also change the U.S. and UK positions about the International Criminal Court jurisdiction.

JMO

“Israel has clear obligations in relation to its war with Hamas: not just moral obligations, but legal obligations that it has to comply with the laws of armed conflict. These laws are clearly outlined in the Rome statute and the Geneva conventions.”

Lammy said in a statement on Sunday night that “all parties must uphold international law”.

“Allegations of breaches of international humanitarian law should always be treated with utmost seriousness,” he said. “Assessing specific allegations is the proper task of lawyers and competent international courts. Labour supports the independence of the international criminal court and recognises its jurisdiction to address the conduct of all parties in Gaza.”

Fuel offered by Israel would last half an hour, says Al-Shifa doctor

The 300 litres of fuel offered by Israel to Al-Shifa would provide power for just half an hour, a doctor at the hospital has told the BBC.

The lack of fuel has led to a near-complete electricity outage at the hospital in recent days.

The hospital's head of surgery, Dr Marwan Abu Saada, says Al-Shifa typically uses 24,000 litres of fuel a day to run its generators.

Even with only one generator running, the hospital still requires 9,000 to 10,000 litres, he says.

Dr Abu Saada says the hospital's intensive care unit and surgical theatre are now running entirely on solar energy

The lack of power means the hospital has been unable to provide renal dialysis to its 45 patients requiring kidney treatment for two days because of a lack of power.

Over the last 30 days, Al-Shifa workers have had to dig four mass graves for unknown patients, while another 100 dead bodies are currently lying in the open outside its emergency department.

“This is a source of outbreak and infection," he says. "This is a disaster."

He can always walk out the door and surrender the hospital to IDF. IDF will save the patients.

What a total disregard for life to not transport the NICU babies. He's risking everyone's life for his five minutes of fame.
Oh he's definitely Hamas.

Third baby dies at Al-Shifa hospital, says doctor

Tom Bateman
Reporting from Jerusalem

A doctor at Al-Shifa hospital says a third newborn baby has died in their makeshift neonatal care unit.

We reported last night how medics said two babies had already died and a further 37 were at serious risk, after the neonatal intensive care unit stopped working due to power failures.

The infants were transferred to a cardiac surgery room. The BBC was sent pictures of at least 20 babies wrapped in blankets in rows on adult beds.

“I’m afraid we are going to lose the lives of all [the] babies,” says head of surgery Dr Marwan Abu Saada in a voice note sent to us earlier.

He says the third infant died from enteritis - an inflammation of the gut to which premature babies are particularly susceptible.

<modsnip - namecalling> The children's cancer hospital evacuated 80 patients, just days ago.

The Associated Press has this update on al-Shifa hospital, where the last generator ran out of fuel Saturday, leading to the deaths of three premature babies and four other patients, according to the Health Ministry.

It said another 36 babies are at risk of dying.

Israel’s military asserted it placed 300 liters (79 gallons) of fuel near Shifa overnight for an emergency generator powering incubators for premature babies and coordinated the delivery with hospital officials. “Sadly, they haven’t taken the fuel yet,” spokesperson Lt. Col. Richard Hecht said. He said if this fuel doesn’t work, they will seek “other solutions for the babies.”

A Health Ministry spokesperson, Ashraf al-Qidra, told Al Jazeera the fuel would not be enough to operate the generator an hour. “This is a mockery towards the patients and children,” Al-Qidra said.

Seems like things are starting to get real.....Israel and Hamas need to stop the madness before it spreads.
Maybe IDF needs to hurry up and take the Hamas Central Command, under the hospital.

Israel will not stop till the hostages are released. They have the backing and the support of the US.

Hamas must be stopped. Gazans deserve to live in peace and harmony and a safe environment.

Do you think many hostages will survive the Israeli strikes?

Then I guess it will really be on!!

Israel cut power to Gaza when the war started. The hospital electricity would be from a generator, and they have said they are very low on fuel.

JMO

There is plenty of fuel available to the hospital. Hamas just isn't sharing. In fact Hamas stole the fuel that Israel gave to the hospital. The Palestinians will never have a better life or peace until Hamas is gone.
