Medics refusing to leave northern Gaza - reports

There is no way one million people could be safely moved from northern Gaza within 24 hours, says Nebal Farsakh, a spokesperson for the Palestinian Red Crescent in Gaza City.

She told Associated Press: “What will happen to our patients? We have wounded, we have elderly, we have children who are in hospitals.”

She added that many medics were refusing to evacuate hospitals and abandon patients.

She also spoke to the BBC, telling us: "People have no place to go. That's the point. Hearing bombardments all over the area and asking people to evacuate themselves to another area with this great destruction of the infrastructure and roads and these restrictions of movement, is just something unbelievable."

Meanwhile, an Egyptian politician claims the move is an effort by Israel to force Palestinians to move from Gaza to Egypt.

“In this way the Palestinian cause will be completely liquidated,” Mustafa Bakri, an MP, says on X, formerly Twitter. “Egypt will never agree to participate in this plan, and the Palestinians will not leave their land and will remain steadfast, no matter the sacrifices it costs them."

Fears war could begin on new front - as Hezbollah says it's ready to join Hamas

Anna Foster
Reporting from Israel's northern border with Lebanon

As Israel’s northern border remains tense, Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian has visited neighbouring Lebanon and met with the leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah.

He warned that what he called “ongoing war crimes” against Palestinians in Gaza would “undoubtedly trigger a collective response from the resistance axis”.

There are real fears a new front could open up in the war if Hezbollah decides to get involved and attack Israel in support of its Palestinian allies.

And just now, Hezbollah's deputy leader said they were "fully prepared" to join Hamas in the war against Israel - telling a rally in the suburbs of Beirut they will intervene "when the time comes".

Like Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah has been designated a terror organisation by the UK, US and other countries. It’s a powerful player in Lebanon both militarily and politically and is close to Iran.

This was the first thing that came up for me on my FB feed this morning:

The OPP is aware of global online threats of violence regarding the situation in the Middle East. We understand members within our communities are deeply affected and want to assure Ontarians that we continue to focus on public safety.
We have increased patrols in areas of cultural and religious significance and will maintain open lines of communication with community leaders. Acts of hate, violence or threats of violence will not be tolerated.
The OPP and our law enforcement partners are closely monitoring for any situation which could impact public safety in our communities. Any incidents will be investigated and those responsible will be held accountable.
While the OPP respects the right of everyone to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, everyone also has a right to a safe environment. All those involved in a demonstration have a responsibility to ensure the event remains lawful, peaceful and safe.
Report any allegations of hate-motivated incidents and crime to the OPP or your local police. If there is a life-threatening emergency, call 9-1-1 immediately. All other incidents in OPP jurisdiction can be reported by calling the non-emergency number, 1-888-310-1122.

Let’s just hope this is both the beginning and the end, and the worst doesn’t happen with today’s threat.
I hate to say it but I think it's going to get MUCH worse today.

From the same article:

“Civilians of Gaza City, evacuate south for your own safety and the safety of your families and distance yourself from Hamas terrorists who are using you as human shields,” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said.

The United Nations on Thursday said it was informed by their liaison officers in the Israeli military that “the entire population of Gaza north of Wadi Gaza should relocate to southern Gaza within the next 24 hours.”

So which is it? Gaza City is around 600,000 and they weren't told to travel all the way past Wadi per the leaflets dropped but the UN is saying different.

Aid group says Israeli plan to relocate 1.2 million Palestinians is a war crime

Oliver Holmes’s

The Norwegian Refugee Council, which works in Israel and Palestine, has described Israel’s demand that 1.2 million people in Gaza leave their homes as a war crime.

Jan Egeland, Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, released the below statement

“The Israeli military demand that 1.2 million civilians in northern Gaza relocate to its south within 24 hours, absent of any guarantees of safety or return, would amount to the war crime of forcible transfer. It must be reversed.

“The collective punishment of countless civilians, among them children, women, and the elderly, in retaliation for acts of horrible terror undertaken by armed men is illegal under international law.

“My colleagues inside Gaza confirm that there are countless people in the northern parts who have no means to safely relocate under the constant barrage of fire.

“The loss of civilian lives caused by deliberate or indiscriminate use of force is a war crime for which the perpetrators will have to answer. We fear that Israel may claim that Palestinians who could not flee northern Gaza can be erroneously held as directly participating in hostilities, and targeted.

“The United States, the UK, the European Union, and other Western and Arab Nations who have influence over the Israeli political and military leadership must demand that the illegal and impossible order to relocate is immediately rescinded.”

The Israeli military claims the order to Palestinians “is for your own safety”.

Vatican offers to mediate on hostage releases, calls for 'proportionality' in Israeli response

The Vatican has offered to mediate between Israel and Hamas militants for the release of hostages in Gaza and to facilitate peace, and said any Israeli response to the “inhuman” Hamas attack must respect “proportionality”.

Reuters reports in an interview with Vatican media, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s secretary of state, said the Holy See remains firmly convinced that a two-state solution is the only way to guarantee lasting peace in the region.

“The release of Israeli hostages and the protection of innocent lives in Gaza are at the heart of the problem created by Hamas’ attack and the response of the Israeli army,” said Parolin, who is the pope’s top diplomat.

“They are at the centre of all of our concerns: the pope and the entire international community. The Holy See is ready for any necessary mediation, as always,” he said.

Parolin added: “It is necessary to regain a sense of reason, abandon the blind logic of hatred, and reject violence as a solution. It is the right of those who are attacked to defend themselves, but even legitimate defence must respect the parameter of proportionality.”

The Israeli embassy to the Vatican said Parolin paid a visit to the mission on Friday morning to express his “deep sentiments of pain and solidarity” over the attacks.

Russia urges citizens to leave Israel with 12 missing after Hamas attack

While Lloyd Austin and Yoav Gallant are answering questions, there is some news coming in via the RIA agency in Russia, that the Russian embassy in Israel recommends that its citizens leave on scheduled flights.

Reuters reports RIA cited the embassy as saying that 12 Russian citizens were missing in connection with the Israel-Palestinian conflict and that the number of Russians killed as a result of the violence was continuing to grow, without elaborating further.

Fear and suspicion grows in Jerusalem

Tom Bateman
Reporting from Jerusalem

Most residents in Jerusalem are scared to go out - not only due the risk of rocket fire. I’ve seen how easily the streets of this city can be plunged into bloody confrontation and sectarian violence.

Amid growing tension on Tuesday, two young Palestinians were shot dead by Israeli forces in the neighbourhood of Silwan, which borders the Old City and its holy sites; police said they were killed for throwing firecrackers and stones.

Israelis are reeling with shock and anger, appalled at details continuing to come out about the atrocities by Hamas gunmen in southern Israel.

Palestinians are watching the siege on Gaza and the growing number of civilians killed in the Israeli bombardment.

As everyone awaits the next phase of fighting in the south, fear and suspicion is growing in Jerusalem.

Rally supporting Gaza forms in Jordan

Yolande Knell
BBC Middle East correspondent, reporting from Jerusalem

As the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken meets Jordan’s King Abdullah and the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Amman, a large rally in support of people in Gaza has formed after Friday prayers.

Protesters are sharing social media videos of Jordanian soldiers using tear gas to push back their demonstrations close to Jordan’s border with the occupied West Bank.
The Allenby or King Hussein crossing – which is controlled by Israel on the Palestinian side – was shut.

The Jordanian military could not be reached for comment.
Many Jordanians are Palestinian refugees or have Palestinian roots - including Queen Rania.

In a story to her more than 10 million Instagram followers she wrote: "It isn't self-defense if you are an occupying force..." before reposting stories depicting what is happening in Gaza.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has met President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas in Jordan.

Abbas, who is based in the West Bank, is a political rival to Hamas which rules the Gaza Strip.

Blinken is also meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah in Amman after arriving there earlier today. Yesterday he was in Israel for talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyhau - where he was shown graphic photos of dead children killed by Hamas.

Israel's request for people to leave Gaza is impossible

Tom Bateman
BBC Middle East correspondent, Jerusalem

It is impossible for 1.1 million people to leave their homes within 24 hours.
It would involve 40,000 people per hour.

The UN said the order included everyone - all those sheltered in UN facilities including schools and health centres.

That’s why they’ve urged the Israelis to withdraw the announcement, saying that it would lead to calamity.

On the ground convoys of the International Red Cross and United Nations humanitarian agency staff have been spotted travelling south from Gaza City towards the southern part of territory, which may be in preparation for possible evacuation operation.

But it would bring chaos to try to carry out an evacuation order on this scale within 24 hours - with a civilian population in such a densely populated area including children, the elderly, and those in hospitals already packed to capacity with the wounded and those sheltering from Israel’s bombardments.

The European People’s party, Europe’s centre-right political grouping, has issued a statement today underscoring that it stands by Israel and that while it supports continued EU assistance to Palestinians, that must be reviewed.

“We stand by Israel. Our support for Israel will never waiver. It is the sacred responsibility of every state, including Israel, to protect its citizens and defend against terrorism, in line with international law,” it said in the statement.

“We believe that Hamas does not represent or speak for Palestinian people, therefore EU aid must continue. However, it is the responsibility of the EU to carefully review the financial assistance for Palestine and ensure that this funding does not end up in the hands of Hamas or any other terrorist organisation,” it added.

Important message: We call on civilians in Northern Gaza to evacuate the area and head towards the southern area of the Gaza Strip.
Our fight is not with them.
It is with the barbaric Hamas terrorist organization and we are trying to prevent civilian casualties and to keep innocents out of harm’s way .

The Philippines has confirmed the death of a third of its citizens in the conflict between Hamas and Israel.

The victim was a 49-year-old woman from Negros Occidental, who was working as a carer, according to the department of foreign affairs undersecretary Eduardo de Vega. She was killed on Saturday, the first day of the Hamas attack, he said. A further four Filipinos are believed missing.

There are about 30,000 Filipinos living in Israel, mostly working as carers.

Earlier this week, the deputy mayor of Jerusalem, Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, paid tribute to a Filipina nurse called Angelyn, who was caring for her elderly patient, Nira, on the kibbutz Kfar Gaza. Despite having a chance to flee the Hamas attac

Erdoğan calls for humanitarian aid to be allowed into Gaza, Turkey calls Israeli military evacuation order 'unacceptable'

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said Israel needs to allow humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip through Egypt’s Rafah crossing after a first plane carrying Turkish aid arrived in Egypt. Turkey also described the Israeli military order to evacuate the north of the Gaza Strip as“unacceptable”.

Reuters reports that in a speech in Istanbul, Erdoğan said that Turkey will continue sending aid to Gaza in cooperation with Egypt, and that Turkish authorities were continuing contacts to free hostages and find a solution to the crisis.

Turkey’s foreign ministry said that Israel’s call for Gazans to move south in 24 hours ahead of its planned ground offensive was “completely unacceptable”, inhumane and a violation of international law.

“Forcing the 2.5 million people of Gaza – who have been subjected to indiscriminate bombing for days and who have been deprived of electricity, water and food – to migrate in an extremely limited area is a clear violation of international law and has no place in humanity,” Turkey’s foreign ministry said.

“We expect Israel to immediately reverse this grave mistake and urgently halt its merciless … acts against civilians in Gaza,” Reuters reports it said in a statement.

First order of this kind in modern times

Residents of Gaza city begin to evacuate

There has not been, in modern times, an Israeli order of this kind for Gaza that I am aware of. Previous incursions have been for limited areas, with warnings that everyone should move out within a mile or two of where they might come in.

In 2014 we saw people get into cars, or carts, or sometimes even walk, and move down into Gaza City, where UN schools can be used as refuges.

There is massive damage in Gaza, a lack of food, no fuel, the water is cut off and now more than a million people are being told by the Israelis to head south for their own benefit in the next 24 hours.

Imagine trying to do that, in those circumstances, with your family, with everything you need for the next few weeks and, if you have got a car, no fuel.

So I think what the UN says is accurate - this is going to be a very hard, very difficult thing to do.

Dutch leader Mark Rutte said that he spoke with Jordan’s King Abdullah.

“It is of great importance that the innocent residents of Gaza can obtain food, water and medical care,” Rutte said, adding: “Israel has every right to defend itself and take action, with due regard for proportionality and international humanitarian law, to counter the appalling terror inflicted by Hamas.”
