Hamas spokesman among scores detained in occupied West Bank

“Occupation forces arrested Hamas leader Sheikh Hassan Yousef from his home in Beitunia, as part of a wide-scale arrest campaign in the occupation (sic) West Bank,” the Palestinian Prisoners Club statement reads.

Yousef has been arrested by Israeli forces on several occasions and has spent a total of 24 years in Israeli jails on various charges of incitement, entering Jerusalem without permission and for being a Hamas member.

He has made regular appearances on international media, this week telling Canadian outlet The Globe and Mail he thought Hamas would be prepared to free the estimated 200 hostages it is holding if Israel agrees to a 24-hour ceasefire to allow aid into Gaza.

Israel-Hamas war live: White House walks back Biden’s comment agreeing that Israel should delay Gaza ground assault (theguardian.com)

US secretary of state Antony Blinken has acknowledged the emotional toll that the Israel-Hamas war has taken on US diplomats amid media reports of internal dissent over Washington’s handling of the conflict, Agence France-Presse reports.

Blinken sent a letter to all State Department employees noting the “challenging” circumstances affecting the US diplomatic corps, some of whom feel the “ripples of fear and bigotry” the conflict has generated.

US leaders including President Joe Biden and Blinken have pledged unwavering support for Israel, publicly blessing the country’s reprisals for Hamas’ surprise raid from the Gaza Strip on 7 October.

At least one State Department official has quit over the Biden administration’s approach to the conflict. The official, Josh Paul, said on LinkedIn that he left over “policy disagreement concerning our continued lethal assistance to Israel”.

Blinken’s letter on Thursday night was not a response to the reports of frustrations within the department, a source familiar with the matter said.

In his letter, Blinken described his recent trip to the Middle East, which saw him bounce between Israel and several Arab countries, visiting some several times.

He wrote in the letter, which AFP obtained:

I know that, for many of you, this time has not only been challenging professionally, but personally.

Gaza crossing still closed despite pressure from UN and US leaders

The humanitarian lifeline into Gaza remained closed on Friday despite a personal visit by the UN secretary general, António Guterres, and an agreement to open it brokered by Joe Biden, as Israel continued to pummel the enclave with airstrikes.

The failure to lift the total Israeli blockade further endangered Gaza’s population of 2.3 million people, with the UN forced in many cases to reduce the water ration to one litre a person a day for all uses, compared with the minimum international standard of 15 litres.

Israeli aircraft struck six homes in northern Gaza early on Saturday, killing at least eight Palestinians and injuring 45, Palestinian media reported.

The Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the main Palestinian Christian denomination, said Israeli forces had struck the Church of Saint Porphyrius in Gaza City, where hundreds of Christians and Muslims had sought refuge.

Israel has told all civilians to evacuate the northern half of the Gaza Strip, which includes Gaza City. Many people have yet to leave, saying they fear losing everything and have nowhere safe to go with southern areas also under attack.

Asked if Israel had so far followed the laws of war in its response, US secretary of state Antony Blinken reiterated on Friday that Israel had the right to defend itself and make sure Hamas was not able to launch attacks again.

The UN humanitarian affairs office said more than 140,000 homes – nearly a third of all homes in Gaza – had been damaged, with nearly 13,000 completely destroyed.

Thanks for the link! I agree with his take on the situation.

Israel has been adamant their war is with the regime of the terrorists, Hamas. But Israel's extreme actions toward the innocent civilians in Gaza smacks of being anti-Palestinian. Demanding a hospital evacuate when it knows thousands of civilians are there for safe shelter is crossing the line. An artillery shell collapsing a wall of a Christian church crossed the line, imo.

I'm waiting for clear and confirmed information that Israel actually demanded that a Gaza hospital be evacuated. There's been a lot of misinformation from Hamas and Palestinian sources in this conflict.

Hamas benefits greatly from propaganda to gain support for their "cause" which I call terrorist acts of violence. I sure hope that Hamas is not using that hospital to launch attacks against Israel. JMO.

Israel strikes Hezbollah infrastructure - IDF

The Israeli military says it's attacked "a series of military targets" of the Lebanese Hezbollah group in the last few hours, in response to the "firing of anti-tank missiles and launches into Israeli territory last night".

The targets struck include military compounds and operational infrastructure used by the group, as well as an anti-tank launcher located at the border and aimed at Israel, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says in an update on X, known previously as Twitter.
Hezbollah is Lebanon's most powerful military force and has long-range rockets at its disposal that could strike deep into Israeli territory. It fought a month-long war with Israel in 2006.

Since the Hamas attack on Israel two weeks ago, there has been a steady increase in tensions between the Israeli military and Hezbollah fighters.
The group, like Hamas, is considered a terrorist organisation by the UK, the US and other Western powers.

Biden asked Israel “hard questions” about its strategy this week, senior US official says

The US is allowing Israel to make its own calls on timing and strategy in its war with Hamas, but US President Joe Biden did weigh in on the matter during his visit with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the war cabinet in Tel Aviv earlier this week, according to a senior administration official.

"He asked some hard questions" about what was being planned and what the effects would be, the official told CNN, adding: "We're not directing the Israelis, the timeline is theirs — their thinking, their planning."

As CNN reported Friday, the US and its allies have been urging Israel to be strategic and clear about its goals if and when it launches a ground invasion of Gaza, warning against a prolonged occupation and placing a particular emphasis on avoiding civilian casualties, according to US and Western officials.

Alleged hospital evacuation order is disturbing - WHO chief

Although we've been focusing for the last several hours on the release of a pair of American hostages, we're endeavouring to bring you other key lines from the wider conflict, too.

The director of the World Health Organization (WHO) has commented on reports that the Israeli military has ordered people to evacuate the Al-Quds hospital in Gaza ahead of a potential strike - as alleged by the Palestinian Red Crescent earlier.

The hospital is currently home to more than 400 patients and 12,000 displaced civilians, according to the Red Crescent.

WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has posted on X, formerly Twitter:

“Disturbing reports about evacuation order to Al-Quds Hospital. As (the) WHO has repeatedly stressed, it is impossible for these overcrowded hospitals to safely evacuate patients. They must be allowed to perform their lifesaving functions. They must be protected."

Here are some more shots of family and relatives of the two American hostages newly freed by Hamas from the Gaza Strip.

Judith Tai Raanan, 59, and her daughter Natalie, 17, were handed over to Israeli forces at the territory’s border on Friday, becoming the first captives whose release by Hamas has been confirmed by both sides.

Uri Raanan, the teenager’s father, has said he spoke with his daughter by phone and “she sounds very, very good, very happy – and she looks good”.
