The U.N. isn't objective or neutral when it makes pronouncements about Israel. They even go so far as to accuse not only Israel of committing crimes aginst humanity in Gaza, but also mention that statements made by Israel's allies in support of Israel could lead to genocide. Are they referring to the United States, I wonder? They also refer to Israel as unlawful, brutal occupiers over the last 16 years.

Hardly sounds like an unbiased source.

Might be a good idea to have an approved list of trusted sources for this thread.

US embassy says it believes Rafah crossing will open soon

The US Embassy in Israel says it has "received information" that the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt will open at 10:00 local time (in an hour).

"We anticipate that many people would attempt to cross should the border open, and US citizens attempting to enter Egypt should expect a potentially chaotic and disorderly environment on both sides of the crossing," it says in a statement.

It says if the border does open, it's unclear how long it will remain so for foreign citizens to leave.

The embassy tells US citizens the situation "remains dynamic and fluid and the security environment is unpredictable", advising people to assess their safety before travelling to the border or trying to cross.

Dozens of trucks with essential medicines, food, and water are stuck on the Egyptian side of the crossing - which is the only crossing into Gaza not controlled by Israel. All crossings into Gaza are currently closed.

It looks like quite a small border crossing. I wonder how many people it can process in (presumably) a relatively short period of time.

and it's opened according to...

Guardian:

Aid trucks have entered the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing, a Palestinian border official has confirmed, while Egyptian television showed trucks entering the Gaza Strip.

Because they’re American citizens imo.

Not sure if we have any children, etc. who are US citizens, do we? Need to check my files again.

Of course. Propaganda. To show the Americans that it is not against them, that it is Palestinian-Israeli "inner conflict". Only - it is not. I am very happy for the two women who were released, and their families.

I have been keeping an eye on Al Jazeera news to see what they are saying. Today they quote a "Hamas Media Officer" as saying that ...... “The relief aid convoy that is supposed to enter today includes 20 trucks that carry medicine, medical supplies, and a limited amount of food supplies (canned goods).” Link

So I am guessing that Hamas know what is coming in (maybe it was a case of we will give you 20 trucks of humanitarian supplies if you give us two hostages?)

Or Hamas don't know what is coming in and are lying.

(Lol been doing the same thing with AJ)

Well, just maybe we could have offered aid, once there was a cease fire. Rather than throwing gasoline on a fire by promising Israel everything, including an aircraft carrier presence.

Yes, Hamas attacked Israelis. So, now Isreal is justified in a blitzkrieg in Gaza, until everything is pounded to dust?

One would have hoped that the United States could provide stability, and begin peace talks. Rather than stoking the region with more weapons. How is this going end?

I don't want to get into history, there probably was lots of injustice on both sides, but - today, Israel is one of the staunchest, most loyal, allies of the US. And - losing it will not gain us any pluses in the eyes of the Middle East. Countries like Afghanistan and Iraq have a long memory. There are lot of anti-American feelings in the world, so we need to have a strong coalition of loyal allies. So here we are... on the political side, we are tied up with Israel. This being said, on the human side, we have to recognize that the situation is unbearable for both Israeli and Palestinians, and contribute whatever we can to the soonest resolution.

Rafah border aid

Julian Borger Guardian live feed: 'The Israeli government has demanded to see proof that the aid deliveries are not seized or diverted by Hamas, before authorising further deliveries.'

Sky's live feed reports : 'Aid trucks 'will not change catastrophic conditions', says Hamas. Reports emerging from the Palestinian enclave suggest hospitals are overrun, with casualties from Israeli airstrikes filling up an already stretched medical system. '

The WHO via twitter: '

'It seems that shortly, @WHOhealth supplies will finally be moving towards Gaza through the Rafah crossing. The supplies include trauma and chronic disease medicines, and basic essential medicines. WHO calls for: - protection of humanitarian teams in Gaza - sustained humanitarian access'

UK Foreign Secretary on twitter says:
'The UK foreign secretary, James Cleverly, has said the aid crossing into Gaza “cannot be a one off” as he calls for further humanitarian access.'----

UN says ( Guardian Live Feed)

The UN’s under-secretary-general for for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, Martin Griffiths, has released a statement on today’s aid delivery to Gaza where he said the humanitarian situation “has reached catastrophic levels”. He said he is “confident” that it will mark the start of a “sustainable effort to provide essential supplies” safely and unimpeded. But he warned that it is “critical” that sufficient aid reaches people across Gaza, adding: “The international community cannot continue to fail them.”

'Peace summit' happening today in Cairo - around 20 world leaders
'
Egypt is hosting dozens of regional leaders and senior western officials on Saturday for a summit on the Israel-Hamas war.

From the Associated Press:
The meeting in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital, just east of Cairo, will discuss ways to de-escalate the fighting and seek a ceasefire amid mounting concerns about a regional conflict, Egypt’s state-run media reported.
Among those attending the summit are the leaders of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and the Palestinian Authority.
Also attending are the prime ministers of Italy, Spain, Greece and Canada and the president of the European Council, according to the state-run Al-Ahram daily newspaper.
Foreign ministers from Germany, France, the UK and Japan are also attending, the paper reported.

BBC adds that Abbas is attending and BBC adds:
'Notably, there are no Israeli, Hamas, US and Iranian representatives on the list. Abbas is president of the Palestinian Authority, which has partial control over the West Bank - it is a rival movement to the Hamas group. The Egyptian organisers say the main goal is a ceasefire. But expectations of what will be achieved are low, as key players such as Israel and Iran - which back Hamas - won't be present.

13 killed in airstrike near Deir-al-Balah - 3 sources so that you can see how they're reported

Sky:
'At least 13 Palestinians have been killed in an airstrike in Gaza's Deir El Balah neighborood, Hamas's Al Shehab news agency has reported.
The incident happened over a single residential unit, Al Shehab said.'

Guardian:
13 people have reportedly been killed in an airstrike over a residential unit in the Palestinian city of Deir al-Balah. The report, from Reuters, citing Hamas media, has not been independently verified.

I will add to this post ( BBC not reporting it yet)

I hope the R’s weren’t released because Hamas has gone by its handbook” and “killed the difficult ones”…

Maybe kept R’s in good condition, like Mia’s “medical care” video.

I think their release has to do with them being US citizens and a million things relating to this, which is too much to discuss atm (overloaded).

Some analysis from military/defence analysts perspective this morning

(re Bell's comment, personally am not convinced that it really ' has worked' but who am I to opine on this! Day of Rage wasn't as big as Hamas wanted imo)

Sky's Sean Bell: ' All sides know there is no military solution, yet in the absence of a political determination to chart a course for peace, the politicians take the easy route, hide behind inflamed rhetoric, and the casualties mount.'
Despite the horrific and despicable events committed by Hamas on Israel on 7 October, it suits Hamas to frame the current conflict as one between Arab and Western ideals, and nothing appears off-limits.
And it has worked.
Violence has erupted all over the region in protest at Israel's actions.'

Michael Clarke - Analysis: US shooting down missiles potentially heading to Israel is 'significant'
The shooting down of three missiles potentially heading to Israel by the US is "significant" as it was the country "defending Israeli airspace directly", defence and security analyst Michael Clarke has said.

Clarke, former director general at the Royal United Services Institute, said "everyone assumes" it was the Houthi forces in Yemen that had carried out the strike.
"Whether the Iranians directed them to do this or whether this is a bit of free enterprise on their part we do not know," he said.

"But it was rather significant.
"In bringing them down the US did very well but here is the US now defending Israeli airspace directly and that point will not be lost on the Arab street in the region."

Israel tells citizens to leave Egypt and Jordan, AFP reports

The news agency quotes a statement from Israel's national security council, which says it "raises its travel warnings for Egypt (including Sinai) and Jordan to level 4 (high threat): recommendation not to travel to these countries and for those staying there to leave... as soon as possible".

Earlier this week, the warning level was similarly raised for Turkey and Israeli citizens there were instructed to leave.
