The Israeli death toll from the Hamas onslaught against the Jewish state has surpassed 700 people, report Hebrew media outlets, citing health officials.

Israeli forces continue to battle with Hamas gunmen, as they clear out communities along the border, and are discovered more bodies of Israeli citizens.

More than 2,100 people in Israel have been wounded so far.

British prime minister Rishi Sunak has told Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday that Britain stands with Israel “unequivocally.”

“[Sunak] reaffirmed that the UK will stand with Israel unequivocally against these acts of terror. The prime minister offered Prime Minister Netanyahu any support Israel needs,” Sunak’s office said in a statement following the call between the two leaders, Reuters reports.

“No one wants to see regional escalation, and both the UK and allies have urged everyone in the region not to use this as an opportunity to incite further violence,” Sunak said, adding, “In the meantime, we will continue to provide Israel with every support that it needs as we stand steadfast with Israel, including [supporting] its right to self defence to ensure that these attacks do not happen.”

Sunak also confirmed that the UK foreign ministry has been in contact with Israeli counterparts over the status of British nationals on the ground.

White House promises additional support for Israel

US President Joe Biden has "directed additional support" for Israel, according to a White House statement.

The statement says Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed by their national security team earlier on Sunday about the ongoing clashes in Israel.

"White House officials will remain in close contact with our Israeli partners," the statement adds. "The national security teams are engaged with Israelis and their counterparts throughout the region".

Earlier, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken made the rounds of talk shows to update US viewers on the fighting and on the US diplomatic response.

Speaking to the BBC's US partner CBS, Blinken said officials were also investigating reports that US citizens had been killed or taken captive by Hamas fighters.

"We can't confirm that in this moment," he said. "But we're very actively working to see if we can confirm the reports that we've had".

In Egypt, the US embassy in Cairo warned Americans to exercise "increased security awareness and precautions" following the shooting death of two Israeli citizens in the city of Alexandria.

Military chief: Now is ‘time for war’; ‘questions and frustration’ will come later

The chief of the Israel Defense Forces issues his first public comments since Hamas launched its attack against Israel yesterday morning.

“The State of Israel and the IDF are now waging war against a sinful attack by Hamas,” IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi says, in a video published by the military.

“This is murderous terrorism. We are attacking, pushing back, and striking everyone who took part in it. I know the last day was difficult, the price is a heavy price, I know there are many questions and a lot of frustration,” Halevi continues.

“But we are now focusing forward on doing and solving the problem. We have civilians, and members of the security forces, some of whom are in the hands of the enemy,” he says. “Therefore, it is time for war. Not a round, not an operation, time for war,” Halevi says.

“And in this war, the IDF will be strong and win. Long and complex days of fighting await us. We will maintain readiness in all arenas,” he adds.

The remarks are made during an assessment at the IDF Southern Command in Beersheba this afternoon.

Herzog vows that Israel will win this war: ‘We have no other choice’

President Isaac Herzog urges national unity in his speech to the nation, saying “let us keep this spirit of heroism and this togetherness. It is our most powerful weapon.”

He asks citizens to avoid spreading rumors that serve Hamas and to follow orders from the Home Front Command.

“There is an indisputable fact here — the State of Israel will win this time as well,” he pledges. “We have no other choice.”

He calls Hamas’s attack “an unforgivable sin — a sin that is led not only by a murderous terrorist organization, but by an evil axis whose base is in Iran, whose proxies work tirelessly to undermine us.”

He calls Hamas “monstrous animals,” who slaughter toddlers and old women.

“My brothers and sisters: we are at war for our home,” says the president, “and we will win.”

He says that Israel will “make it clear that we are here forever, on our land in our country. Win, and build more and more, to replace homes that were destroyed.”

The UN’s World Food Proramme has called on the establishment of humanitarian corridors to deliver food supplies into Gaza following Israeli air strikes in response to Hamas’s attacks, Reuters reports.

“As the conflict intensifies, civilians, including vulnerable children and families, face mounting challenges in accessing essential food supplies,” the WFP said.
“WFP urges safe and unimpeded humanitarian access to affected areas, calling on all parties to uphold the principles of humanitarian law…including ensuring access to food,” it added.
The WFP delivers food assistance to approximately 350,000 Palestinians per month and said that it was ready to create pre-positioned food stocks for those who have since been displaced.

“While most shops in the affected areas in Palestine currently maintain one month of food stocks, these risk being depleted swiftly as people buy up food in fear of a prolonged conflict,” Reuters reports it saying.

Hostage situation fraught with danger for Israel

Frank Gardner
BBC News, Security Correspondent

Israel is no stranger to hostage crises. As far back as the Entebbe raid in 1976 it showed the world it had the capability and the will to use its special forces to resolve them.

But the current situation in Gaza is on another level altogether. An estimated 100 Israeli citizens are being held by Hamas militants in Gaza after being captured and dragged across the border.

They’re believed to include military officers, civilians, women and children. Hamas are unlikely to concentrate them all in one place.

Instead, they will have been distributed across the heavily populated Gaza Strip, most likely in cellars below ground, their mobile phones and all digital devices taken off them so they’re unable to communicate or reveal their locations.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have set up a situation room to deal with the issue but any rescue attempt is fraught with danger.

Gaza is so densely inhabited that even a stealthy approach by night is unlikely to go unseen by the intensely hostile population. A potential ground invasion by Israeli troops may release some but endanger others.

And negotiations, if they start, could easily stretch into years.

Major airlines cancel dozens of flights to Tel Aviv

A number of airlines, including American Airlines, Air France, Lufthansa, Emirates and Ryanair, have canceled dozens of flights to Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport.

Israeli flag carrier El Al says that it was continuing its Tel Aviv flights for now, though some flights operated by foreign partners had been cancelled.

I can't believe this many humans are capable of such disturbing behavior. To harm innocent women and children and to parade their bodies in the streets and to kill the elderly and post death photos on their FB page.. to kidnap women, children and babies is NOT acts of war. These are not warriors fighting for their cause, this is just plain terrorism. Everyone no matter what side you are on should be disgusted I can't even begin to understand the long complicated relationship between Israel and Gaza I don't need to in order to see what is going on. Terrorism. None of them are fighting for a just cause and Iran supporting it isn't the least bit concerned with Gaza.. they are only thinking of their gain in this.

War used to be men soldiers fighting against other men soldiers. Now they torture and kill the most innocent and vulnerable and think it’s some sort of victory. :(
