Israeli forces fight to drive out Hamas militants and free hostages

Israeli security forces are carrying out operations to rescue hostages taken by Palestinian militants from Gaza and clear areas they seized on Saturday.

The military said troops had secured 22 locations in southern Israel but were still sweeping through another eight.

[…]

Through Sunday morning shootings continued in communities close to Gaza.

Near the city of Ashkelon, Israeli forces chased several Palestinian gunmen in a stolen car, killing them in a dramatic shootout on a main road.

The IDF earlier told reporters that there were still eight "points of engagement" where security forces were going from house to house to confirm that they were "clean of terrorism".

They included Sderot and the nearby kibbutz of Kfar Aza, where soldiers were said to be fighting to free another group of hostages.
Residents living in communities near the Gaza frontier are meanwhile being evacuated.

[…]

Concerns are also growing for the "significant number" of Israeli soldiers and civilians, including women and children, that Lt Col Conricus said were being held hostage in Gaza.

Relatives of those missing have been asked to hand their belongings to police stations so that DNA samples can be taken.

The BBC's Rushdi Abu Alouf in Gaza City says the atmosphere there has changed completely from Saturday morning, when many Palestinians were celebrating on the streets. People are now staying indoors, as the territory is rocked by explosions and clouds of black smoke engulf buildings.

Israel's security cabinet has also cut off Gaza's electricity and fuel supplies and the entry of goods.

Several South Americans have been caught up in the outbreak of violence in Israel, with two Argentinians reported dead and two Brazilians missing after Hamas’ unprecedented attack.

Rodolfo Fabián Skariszewski, a 56-year-old father-of-three from Córdoba in Argentina was reportedly killed in Moshav Ohad, a village near the GazaStrip, while walking his dog on Saturday morning.

Argentina’s president, Alberto Fernández, who has stepped up security around his country’s Jewish community, voiced solidarity with Skariszewski’s family on Twitter and condemned what he called Hamas’ “brutal terrorist attack”.

A second Argentinian, named as Abi Korin, was also killed, according to the country’s Jewish News Agency (AJN). Korin lived at the Holit kibbutz, also near Gaza.

At least two Brazilians have also been reported missing including a 24-year-old from Porto Alegre called Ranani Glazer. Glazer had been attending a local edition of the Brazilian psychedelic trance festival “Universo Paralello” near the Gaza border when it was attacked. He reportedly fled to a nearby shelter before disappearing. “Nobody knows where he is,” his friend, David Hodara Hodz, told the Brazilian news website G1.

Among those who fled the rave was Juarez Petrillo, the DJ father of one of the world’s most famous DJs, the Brazilian celebrity Alok. Petrillo, whose stage name is DJ Swarup, filmed the moment missiles began to rain down on revellers.

Another Brazilian witness, Gabriela Barbosa, told the Estado de São Paulo newspaper: “It was about 6.30am and my boyfriend looked up at the sky and said ... [those are] missiles coming from Gaza ... People started to scream and to panic. First there was one [missile], then loads. They explode in the air because of the anti-missile system ... They turned off the music and told us to lie on the ground and cover our heads.”

Barbosa said some people had decided to flee on foot and by car but others preferred to wait for the bombardment to end, “because nobody had the slightest idea that Hamas was also launching a land invasion”.

''The United States, a close ally and major supplier of arms to Israel, could announce later today new military support for the country following the Hamas attack, Secretary of State Antony Blinken says.

“We’re looking at specific additional requests that the Israelis have made. I think you’re likely to hear more about that later today,” Blinken tells CNN.''

''US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says on CNN’s “State of the Union” that “We have reports that several Americans were killed.”

We are working overtime to verify that,” Blinken continues. “There are reports of missing Americans.”

Earlier in the day, the US Embassy refused to provide details about dead or missing citizens.''

''The UN agency for Palestinian Refugees, UNRWA, says over 20,000 people are sheltering in 44 of its schools around Gaza.

“The number [of displaced] is rapidly increasing, “ says Inas Hamdan, acting public information officer in Gaza.

The agency said three of its schools suffered “collateral” damage from Israeli airstrikes. The agency also said its operations of nine water wells around the Gaza Strip were stopped early yesterday. Operations in three wells resumed today, said Hamdan. The agency’s food distribution centers, which provide for over 540,000 of Gaza residents, have been closed since yesterday.''

shani louk

Shani Louk was identified as the German tattoo artist whose body was paraded on a pickup truck by Hamas militants in a graphic video that has caused outrage throughout the world, her family has confirmed.

The confirmation of Louk’s identity came in comments her cousin gave to Daily Mail.

A woman named Adi Louk also wrote on X: “This is my sister Shani louk. She it (sic) taken by Hamas. She is a German citizen.” The post contained the German translation of the same message. “Das Ist meine Schwester Shani Louk. Sie wurde heute von Hamas entfuehrt. Sie Ist deutsche Staatsbuergerin.”
No words.

According to Daily Mail, Louk “was at a music festival for peace when she was seized by terrorists as they attacked Israel in a surprise assault.”

Daily Mail reported that a second woman, Noa Argamani, was driven away by Hamas militants on a motorbike from the same music festival.

“We have heard nothing. We are hoping for positive news. It is definitely Shani. She was at a music festival for peace. This is a nightmare for our family,” Daily Mail quoted Weintraub-Louk as saying, of the pickup video.

''What happened on the border between Israel and Gaza on Saturday?

Shocked Israelis woke on the last day of the Jewish high holidays to the wail of sirens as Hamas and Islamic Jihad fired thousands of rockets from Gaza and armed militants broke down the hi-tech barriers surrounding the strip to enter Israel, shooting and taking hostages. Militants in boats also tried to enter Israel by sea.

It was a staggering and unprecedented offensive by Hamas and Islamic Jihad, and a catastrophic intelligence failure by Israel – and both will have long-lasting repercussions and consequences. The Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, declared that Israel was at war and that Palestinians would pay a heavy price.

Militants infiltrated Jewish communities near the border with Gaza, killing and seizing civilians and soldiers. Unverified videos showed terrified Israelis covered in blood, and with hands tied behind their backs, being taken by Palestinian gunmen. Many people rushed to safe rooms in their homes as the carnage unfolded around them''

''How many people have been killed and injured? And how many Israelis have been taken hostage?

At least 300 Israelis were killed and about 2,000 people were being treated in hospitals – 19 of them in critical condition – according to reports on Sunday.

The IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari said more than 400 Palestinian militants had been killed in southern Israel and the Gaza Strip, and dozens more had been captured.''

I'm following this tragedy from Poland.
I hope my friend who was visiting Israel on a religious so called "Trip to the Holy Land" will come home soon.

Polish Minister of National Defense announced that the Polish Army is preparing to evacuate Poles from Israel. — "We will send C-130 Hercules transport planes for our compatriots",
wrote the head of the Ministry of National Defense on the X platform (formerly Twitter).

Due to the fact that flights were suspended after the attack on Israel, many people are camping at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, including a group of several hundred Poles
(including teenage students of the music school in Chełm).

IMO
This conflict must be resolved by dialogue between representatives of the parties to it, with the support by international diplomacy.

It is terrifying that the number of conflicts has been increasing recently.
Not only the Russian-Ukrainian war,
the dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh,
the tense situation in the Balkans,
and now another conflict in the Middle East.
We live in a period of great social tensions.

Germany to review aid to Palestinians

The German government said on Sunday it was reviewing its hundreds of millions of euros of aid for Palestinians after the militant group Hamas attacked Israel.

Development Minister Svenja Schulze said the government had always been careful to check that the money was only used for peaceful ends.
“But these attacks on Israel mark a terrible fracture,” she said. “We will now review our entire engagement for the Palestinian territories.”

Germany would discuss with Israel how development projects in the region could best be served, and coordinate with international partners, said the minister for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s centre-left government.

Some German lawmakers, from the opposition conservatives in particular, called for an end to the aid.

“All of Europe, all 27 states, must now say: we need a new start and we will no longer finance terrorists,” said Armin Laschet, chancellor candidate for the conservatives at the last federal election, calling for an end to EU cooperation with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who is based in the West Bank.

Gregor Gysi, a prominent member of the opposition Left party argued against such a move, saying Hamas, and not all Palestinians, were responsible for the attack.

He adds, “We are very actively working to verify those reports.”

This is Shiri with her two kids: Kfir, 9 months old, and Ariel, 3 years old. They were brutally kidnapped yesterday from their home in Kibbutz Nir- Oz.

Her husband Yarden, together with her two parents Yossi and Margit, were apparently kidnapped and brought to Gaza. Margit is sick and needs her medication.

We need to share their story and let the world know!

American man, 23, sends chilling message before going missing from Israeli rave

A young American-Israeli attending a rave that was disrupted by Hamas terrorists on Saturday texted his parents “I love you” and “I’m sorry,” before becoming unreachable — as horrifying videos of attackers paragliding into the party and kidnapping attendees emerge.

Hersh Golberg-Polin, who just turned 23 this week, was celebrating in the desert in northern Negev when Hamas militants invaded the party and began attacking attendees, his father told The Jerusalem Post.

[...]

The 23-year-old had also been celebrating his release from his Army service, which he finished at the end of April.

During his service, Golberg-Polin drove tanks in the 7th Armored Brigade and later trained to become a medic, his father said, adding that his son thought it was “more interesting than driving a trank.”

[...]

He had been working as both a medic and a waiter to try and save up to visit India, which had been a long-time dream of his, his father said.

Golberg-Polin, a Berkeley, California, native, made aliyah with his mother, father, and two younger sisters when he was just 7 years old.
