Just from looking at the pictures of the damage I didn't really think they were going to be able to restart anything.

And with this big red banner - complete with flashing light - atop Drudge's page, I would guess we are even going to get less news.............

WAR NO. 3: US LAUNCHES MISSILE ATTACKS ON LIBYAN FORCES

I'm feeling a little resigned today...

This is the week we are supposed to have the big one here in SoCal, starting to day I believe.(according to the ring of fire theory)
My earthquake alert app just told me there was a small quake in southern Alaska, so are things moving around the Ring of Fire?
Just food for thought is all.

I hope the theory is wrong; the last thing your state needs is a major earthquake. Sending good thoughts and prayers your way! :prayer:

Radioactive iodine beyond limit detected in tap water in Fukushima

Quote: Radioactive iodine beyond Japan's regulated standard was detected in tap water in a town in Fukushima Prefecture on Thursday, apparently due to the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the government said Saturday.

and

While the substance was found in Tochigi, Gunma, Niigata, Chiba and Saitama prefectures as well as Tokyo, traces of cesium have been also found in tap water in Tochigi and Gunma, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology said, adding the levels would not affect human health even if ingested.

Tsunamis have been compared to ripples in a pond when something is dropped in the water. So, yes, there can be more than one wave. In fact, tsunami waves have been known to hit land and then bounce back in the opposite direction (like ripples in a bath tub).

What makes it confusing is that "tsunami" means "harbor wave", so each wave or "ripple" may be called a tsunami and the entire event is also called a tsunami.

You know, I had thought that the tsunami went in one direction (inland) and eventually lost its momentum and dissipated. But tsunamis do reverse their flow, as a regular wave would, and go back out to the ocean.

This is probably why so many people are still missing - they got washed out to sea by the tsunami.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cesium-137

Quote: Caesium-137 is water-soluble and chemically toxic in small amounts. The biological behavior of caesium-137 is similar to that of potassium and rubidium. After entering the body, caesium gets more or less uniformly distributed through the body, with higher concentration in muscle tissues and lower in bones. The biological half-life of caesium is rather short at about 70 days.[4] Experiments with dogs showed that a single dose of 3800 μCi/kg (approx. 44 μg/kg of caesium-137) is lethal within three weeks.[5]

Isn't this the mantra,"not harmful to human health"

Some mockery, imo.

Ann Coulter On The O’Reilly Factor: ‘Radiation Is Actually Good For You’

Quote:Nuclear physicist and medical expert Ann Coulter has spoken, and it turns out that a giant radioactive plume floating across the Pacific may be just what the doctor ordered for fretting California residents. On tonight’s O’Reilly Factor, Coulter told host Bill O’Reilly that “radiation is good for you,”...

Exactly, tragically, yes.

I heard that!! Are you kidding!!!

I heard that!! Are you kidding!!!

I never know how much of her own nonsense Coulter believes, but this doesn't seem to be a joke. She's quoting a NYT article citing studies that show some amount of radiation (I'm not sure how much, but higher than levels traditionally considered safe) may deter the body from developing cancer.

Some mockery, imo.

Maybe it's because Ann radiates such charm and beauty.

Ann Coulter???????? Don't even get me started. I could rant for DAYS. Ann Coulter my arse. She is nothing but a lousy lawyer, who found it easier to run her mouth on the teevee. To even joke that she's a "nuclear physicist and medical expert" with this crisis going on is bullchit. Her and O'Really make a perfect pair. Let's send them to the front line. OMG. OMGGGGGGGGGGG.

ETA:OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.

She is not! She's a corporate lawyer, author, and columnist. Newsweek estimates she makes at least half a million a year giving speeches.

If you all want to discuss her theory in earnest, then please start a thread in the PP. Otherwise, let's get back to what is going on in Japan and not detour by way of AC and rants about her as the topic.
This thread has been incredibly informative with lots of great discussion and insight.
Thanks.

ETA: to clarify after reading Nova's post, if you want to discuss the notion that radiation is good for us, then that is fine. But please keep this from turning into a thread about AC and/or just AC ranting.

I'll be happy to avoid further discussion of She Who Must Not Be Named.

But I think the point here was a claim (originally from scientists, not SWMNBN) that the additional radiation reaching the U.S. west coast from Japan might actually be a good thing for Californians, Oregonians, etc.

With all the bad news of late, it would be nice to believe our risk of cancer had gone down a little bit, no?

LOL, you can name her, just avoid making her the topic. I removed a couple posts that are just rants about AC and nothing to do with the topic at hand.
So, I suppose if you all want to keep the discussion about this theory here, that is ok, just do what we have to to keep it from becoming a thread about AC.
Does that make sense?
